Unfortunately you're both mistaken here. Listen to it again. Sam said that the polls show that Muslims supported imprisonment of cartoonist. To which Omar said that polls also show that British Muslims are more integrated. The point being that the poll showing that Muslims are more integrated than the white British is clearly stupid SO WHY WOULD YOU TRUST THE POLLS? This is pretty obviously the case as immediately after he said it. he says that it is a red herring. (It being the line on reasoning. as you wouldn't use the term red herring otherwise. that and the fact that saying what he said is a non sequitur if its following what sam said.)

You can very easily find the percentage that support the imprisonment through yes and no answers on polls, but you can’t measure how integrated a person is through polls. It is subjective. One is a call for action, the other about what you say you feel. Can’t compare the two.
Well, I think you all misunderstood his argument. He was trying to debunk Sam's use of polling result in Britain/Sudan and used that as an example. He also said it is a logical fallacy( Red Herring) that the poll indicates British Muslims are better integrated in British society. Obviously, he does not believe in it. Also, if it is false then Sam's poll results *could* also be false is what Omar was trying to suggest.

It's hard to listen to fast-chattering Omer and not take away a sense of mistrust for how he speaks. I have seen this type of patter before, one of the trademarks is an instant 180-degree about-face Omer is able to make during a disagreement, real-time. It's the very definition of a bad-faith actor.

I am not sure that you would claim atheism as your highest value right? If Omer concedes on any point here, isn't that questioning his religion, which would indicate a lack of faith, which threatens his status in the eyes of his God? Trying to debate about a person's religion is a waste of time, because the religious person simply cannot afford to ever be wrong...the stakes are too high. Same is true for dogmatic atheists (except the threat is ego damage instead of Hell), but many or most atheists/agnostics, such as myself, aren't dogmatic about it. We're not ego-invested in our beliefs. I'm ready to become religious tomorrow if someone can convince me that it is real, but I can't magically start believing in something just because I feel like it.

I’m 3 years late to this one but I actually found this highly productive. Sam’s detest for the interview stems from his hate for bad intentions and irrational argument. However this is the most common form arguments take in the wild so it was great to hear the conversation shapeshift and evolve from level heads to anger and back to more or less rational discussion.

We might have been too habituated to seeing you maintain serenity at all times, so I understand why some people might criticize you for your occasional ups during this podcast. But I know you too are just a human and that this can happen to everyone. Anyways, I think your strong desire to protect your reputation is commendable and people should take example from you. I really tried to sit this one through, but after an hour of barely getting past the first point I had to stop. I 100% agree Sam, this conversation was as big a waste of time and energy. I can definitely see why you might have been moved slightly off center by Omer. For someone who tries to come off as extremely educated and articulate, he makes a very disingenuous attempt at defending his poorly conceptualized argument, granting absolutely no ground even when you brought up various points of view and pieces of information that seemed to contradict his initial assumption regarding the profitability and expediency of such a publication.

If they don't, it perfectly demonstrates Sam's concluding point about the challenge reaching even intelligent, 'not very religious' people on this issue. It says a lot about his character in my opinion. I wouldn’t say Sam handled this in a bad way at all. Sure, he used some expletives here and there, but you put virtually anybody else in his shoes and they’d be screaming and nonsensical. I don’t understand how he remained as patient as he did.

It's incredibly shocking and disheartening to continually observe adults lack the ability to admit fault at every level and avenue of discussion from personal to professional to public settings. I haven't come across anyone more courageously honest as Sam Harris. Maybe Jordan Peterson is in the same category. *Note: I might be off a word or two.
So, I agree...I really do, but one of the reasons this is such a difficult problem to solve is because both sides (& yes, we're down to exactly two sides now in the U.S.) know that they are the correct side, & it's only the other side that simply needs to concede they are wrong. It's largely OUR inability to do so, not just everyone else's. Now Chris, I remain hopeful that you will admit you're wrong & more importantly, that I'm right. Sam is relatively good at this, because he's a logical & honest man, but his ego slows this process down considerably....that is, it takes him a long time to change his mind, because he's so overwhelmingly convinced that he must be correct, as he's Sam Freaking Harris...Sam F. I'd like to add my 2 cents. I can't help but hear Omer's inner dialog with himself saying, "Use your lawyer skills...evade the question, concede to nothing EVER, frustrate Sam as much as possible...this is how to become famous!!!" Its not about an honest dialog, it's about Omer hoping his name is eventually mentioned along side Sam Harris's. I really enjoy Sam Harris's content. I don't always agree 100% with what he says but I don't doubt he comes by his beliefs honestly and he's open to other ideas as long as they are presented honestly. Omer sounds like a very intelligent person and to me that's the problem. I can't hold a candle to either of these two intellectually but I can see right through Omer's tactics. They are cheap and beneath a person of his intelligence. I'd love to hear an actual back and forth between these two but it's impossible when Omer insists on acting like a troll. Sam obviously knows this but I think it's worth saying anyway..."Never wrestle a pig in the mud. You both get dirty and the pig enjoys it."
I agree, Omer was completely dishonest. His whole agenda, was to never concede from the beginning. It was like he was practicing his lawyer skills for future cases where he knows his client is guilty.
Looking at it through the lense of him being a future? lawyer was quite interesting. Good angle imho I'd like to add that Omer seems to entirely miss the point of what was going on here. Of what kind of projects Sam is working on and why. This was supposed to and could have been an incredibly important and insightful conversation, about a real problem with real consequences, and Omer just doesn't seem to understand this, and views it as a kind of a game of not conceding points no matter how irrelevant they are to furthering the conversation, because it seems, he doesn't really care about the conversation. It's like he's playing a whole other game than Sam is, but happens to be using the same aesthetic/mask/theme as Sam.
This is, without a doubt, the most fiery, impatient and blunt version of Sam Harris I've EVER seen. However, throughout all his debates he's remained patient in places where I would've snapped hours prior. He's brilliant at this. So, in this case, when dealing with such a person, Sam going a bit mental is not only completely warranted and reasonable but its just also super entertaining to see.

Sam, you're a much more patient man than I. I know you didn't really want to post this, but needed to clear the air. And I commend you for that. I used to believe that reasoning with some folks was a complete waste of time, but then I realised that some deserve to be humiliated in public, and this conversation demonstrates that. The process of reason and logical discourse should remain sacred, especially during these trying times where; gaslighting, half truths and outright lies are being pushed upon us all at an alarming magnitude and frequency. The erosion of the once high premium we put upon truth, facts and verifiable evidence is so disheartening and even downright scary. There are certain truths that all Muslims are totally welded to and which are completely immutable. Without ever having to have read the Koran we know exactly what these truths are. Muslims are prepared to sacrifice their lives for the protection of the Prophets dignity.The polls that were conducted in Britain underestimate the depths of belief that even the most moderate Muslims hold. Your debating partner knows exactly the truth of these polls and yet he pretended that he did not. Currently in England April a 29-year-old schoolteacher is in hiding because he dared to show the cartoons of the Prophet in a religious education class. Parents have been picketing the school causing it to close down. The government has done nothing and all this does is is empower this Islamic minority in subduing the liberal majority. It is a well-known premise of dawah do use the ideas and mechanisms of the host power against itself and this is most obvious. I am impressed that as a non-Muslim you have found us out. We admit our truths to each other but obviously not to members of the secular society in which we live as these views are incompatible. I remember in a consultation with a British general before he went to Iraq warning him about the mindset of Muslims which I knew he could never understand but felt duty bound as a human being to try to explain this to him. I am very sorry to say that Islamic ideology is incompatible with the ideals of the western world. I know that this is contemporary heresy but it is the truth. The man you debate with is a liar and he knows it.

“I don’t care about your motives”, almost the entirety of his piece in Salon was an attempt to ascribe motives to Sam and to a lesser extent Maajid. It’s somehow cathartic for me to know that Omar has never published anything of value since this debate. I also think this conversation is a benchmark in the dialogue on “cancel culture”. You can’t just be a person of intermediate renown and go on to “delete” someone who you disagree with because of ‘optics and societal’ reasons. The bulk of Sam and Maajid’s book was not addressed by Omar here. The points Omar actually addressed were refuted completely, almost entirely outside of Omar’s awareness. I really hope Omar grows up. He’s in the right space.
I m muslim and Indonesian. I absolutely love Sam Harris and downloaded his Awakening Apps. I m happy for the conversation. If I m in the position of Omer Aziz, I would probably defending some of the criticism to Islam similar to Omer. I recognize the problem and can contectualize with sanity. There are also a lots of scholar whom I chose and able to interpret it middle way. We live in such turbulence time and to me, Islam has provide me with Solace. Unbelievable I m able to listen for 3 hours podcast 😁
A few things I learned; (1)Sam is human. (2) I hate lawyers. (3)Omar (although knowledgeable) didn't come to share ideas but to defend his beliefs at all costs.
Ever since this episode was released, once a year I'll return to it. Although I side with Sam in every way on this conversation, I greatly respect Omer for being adult enough to say "yes" to a conversation like this. This conversation has taught me quite a lot. Unfortunately, it has become common for the public to "cancel" (as if real life was social media) or actively not listen to people like Sam who have reasonable ideas on these sensitive topics simply because they are not eutopic or all-inclusive... All ideas need to be heard by the public regardless of what the majority thinks. My significant other is from Pakistan, and she thought "Islam and the Future of Tolerance", although short, was a breath of fresh air for how we should approach these conversations. She left Islam mostly because of how the majority of Muslims feel on topics like apostasy. How could "a religion of peace" be so riddled with violence...?
By Omer's logic, nobody should write books on any non fiction topics since there is money to be made from doing it. Omer claims to be against identity politics, yet he is publishing a book this year titled "Brown Boy". That sure makes sense. He also claims racism is the biggest problem worldwide when he is an extremely privileged minority, getting is JD at Yale. He mentions early on that "there are plenty of white, non Muslims who have written books about Islam" as if that is relevant to the conversation. That is what gave it away. Omer is not against identity politics, he has made a career off of it. Read his articles. He is mad because Sam is what he would describe as a "white, non Muslim author", and Sam co-authored a book that says things Omer doesn't think white non Muslims should be allowed to say. His subsequent attacks towards Sam on Twitter have been so unprofessional and devoid of logic that I cannot help but laugh whenever I hear him speak.

This sounded like a student (Omer ) at a university trying to debate with a professor (Sam) but failing to listen and instead dismissing or deflecting. Omer sounded very immature for his age and was dishonest during the conversation. The reactions and emotive way Omer acted made him sound childish by constantly lashing out, throwing out random attacks and saying not to be condescending when he disliked the topic. It seemed Omer was the typical University student who over uses the terms Fascist, Chauvinist, Bigot and Islamophobia to try and win arguments when they cannot communicate in a dialectic manner. Lies and manipulation of the truth is something that I struggle to understand in others. Since journalists and main stream media can defame and twist narratives with lies without any taking of responsibility, they can say anything without consequences. Omer said he wasn't Muslim but his family came from a Muslim background and observed some Muslim religious celebrations but acts with his reaction to criticism of Islam was like a religious Muslim. The way Omer acts as thiugh any criticism of Islam is an attack or should not be done without taking a course at University shows his immaturity. This young man seems to deny the problem in Islam and refuses to listen to reasonable criticism of the doctrine, refuting any apostate claims as none credible source. It was frustrating to listen to Omer who seemed to use Taqiya ( dissimulation or denial of religious belief by refuting any criticism and selecting with attacks to defend the religion) to try and protect Islam.
How could ANYONE even be friends with this kid?!!! OMG im trying to imagine a scenario where me and this kid have to spend time together and accomplish a task or something, and it feels like I'm about to have a seizure or a stroke or something (omg this kid!!!).
I think this was a very thoughtful discussion with great points from both sides. I don’t like when people act like these discussions are hateful arguments and have to take a side and hate on the person they disagree with. This doesn’t have to be a polarizing discussion. Both are very smart people.
I am an Indian who grew up in India and my family has seen 84 massacre of Sikhs and Ayodhya conflict between hindu and muslims. We always believed and know for sure these were politically triggered events and most Indian citizens didn't want to participate in all this. So, I kind of agree with Omer's stance that possibly Islam is being used by politicians to trigger events that benefit them. Normal Muslim maynot have much say in any of this. I am not 100% sure but all my Muslim friends and colleagues are very normal and peaceful people. Yes, they don't like if someone makes fun of their religion.

The ironic misfortune one can derive from this "debate" is how few people can even differentiate enough between real altruistic critical thought and sensationalist word smear to actually benefit from this brilliant effort toward clarity and rationalism by Sam Harris.

Omar is right in implying that terrorism/extremism is better understood and contextualized politically (being on the fascist/far-right). But Sam is right in saying that to resolve terrorism/extremism, one must target the ideology (text) directly.

Well, I think you all misunderstood his argument. He was trying to debunk Sam's use of polling result in Britain/Sudan and used that as an example. He also said it is a logical fallacy( Red Herring) that the poll indicates British Muslims are better integrated in British society. Obviously, he does not believe in it. Also, if it is false then Sam's poll results *could* also be false is what Omar was trying to suggest.

We're not ego-invested in our beliefs. I'm ready to become religious tomorrow if someone can convince me that it is real, but I can't magically start believing in something just because I feel like it.

I’m 3 years late to this one but I actually found this highly productive. Sam’s detest for the interview stems from his hate for bad intentions and irrational argument. However this is the most common form arguments take in the wild so it was great to hear the conversation shapeshift and evolve from level heads to anger and back to more or less rational discussion.

I really tried to sit this one through, but after an hour of barely getting past the first point I had to stop. I 100% agree Sam, this conversation was as big a waste of time and energy. I can definitely see why you might have been moved slightly off center by Omer. For someone who tries to come off as extremely educated and articulate, he makes a very disingenuous attempt at defending his poorly conceptualized argument, granting absolutely no ground even when you brought up various points of view and pieces of information that seemed to contradict his initial assumption regarding the profitability and expediency of such a publication.

I really enjoy Sam Harris's content. I don't always agree 100% with what he says but I don't doubt he comes by his beliefs honestly and he's open to other ideas as long as they are presented honestly.

There are certain truths that all Muslims are totally welded to and which are completely immutable. Without ever having to have read the Koran we know exactly what these truths are. Muslims are prepared to sacrifice their lives for the protection of the Prophets dignity.The polls that were conducted in Britain underestimate the depths of belief that even the most moderate Muslims hold. Currently in England April a 29-year-old schoolteacher is in hiding because he dared to show the cartoons of the Prophet in a religious education class. Parents have been picketing the school causing it to close down. The government has done nothing and all this does is is empower this Islamic minority in subduing the liberal majority. It is a well-known premise of dawah do use the ideas and mechanisms of the host power against itself and this is most obvious. I am impressed that as a non-Muslim you have found us out. We admit our truths to each other but obviously not to members of the secular society in which we live as these views are incompatible. It’s somehow cathartic for me to know that Omar has never published anything of value since this debate. I also think this conversation is a benchmark in the dialogue on “cancel culture”. You can’t just be a person of intermediate renown and go on to “delete” someone who you disagree with because of ‘optics and societal’ reasons. The bulk of Sam and Maajid’s book was not addressed by Omar here. The points Omar actually addressed were refuted completely, almost entirely outside of Omar’s awareness. I really hope Omar grows up. He’s in the right space.

Ever since this episode was released, once a year I'll return to it. Although I side with Sam in every way on this conversation, I greatly respect Omer for being adult enough to say "yes" to a conversation like this. This conversation has taught me quite a lot. Unfortunately, it has become common for the public to "cancel" (as if real life was social media) or actively not listen to people like Sam who have reasonable ideas on these sensitive topics simply because they are not eutopic or all-inclusive... All ideas need to be heard by the public regardless of what the majority thinks. My significant other is from Pakistan, and she thought "Islam and the Future of Tolerance", although short, was a breath of fresh air for how we should approach these conversations. She left Islam mostly because of how the majority of Muslims feel on topics like apostasy. How could "a religion of peace" be so riddled with violence...?
You don’t need to respect him for that. We should _expect_ discourse, and respect a reasoned outlook that’s ground in compassion.

By Omer's logic, nobody should write books on any non fiction topics since there is money to be made from doing it. Omer claims to be against identity politics, yet he is publishing a book this year titled "Brown Boy". That sure makes sense. He also claims racism is the biggest problem worldwide when he is an extremely privileged minority, getting is JD at Yale.
He mentions early on that "there are plenty of white, non Muslims who have written books about Islam" as if that is relevant to the conversation. That is what gave it away. Omer is not against identity politics, he has made a career off of it. Read his articles. He is mad because Sam is what he would describe as a "white, non Muslim author", and Sam co-authored a book that says things Omer doesn't think white non Muslims should be allowed to say.
His subsequent attacks towards Sam on Twitter have been so unprofessional and devoid of logic that I cannot help but laugh whenever I hear him speak.
Oh my god. I've listened to an hour of this and was very frustrated, its like Sam is talking to a wall. Either Omer knows his points and wants to deflect or he seriously lives in another world.

The proposition that Islam drags behind it the largest brand management failure in history seems painfully obvious in the light of this car accident of a conversation. My support to Dr. Harris for his ability to reconcile the setbacks and for making the information available for everyone.

What Sam did to Omer - making him read out his own words - is like what a father does to humiliate his son who doesn't know any better. This is just embarrassing
This sounded like a student (Omer ) at a university trying to debate with a professor (Sam) but failing to listen and instead dismissing or deflecting. Omer sounded very immature for his age and was dishonest during the conversation. The reactions and emotive way Omer acted made him sound childish by constantly lashing out, throwing out random attacks and saying not to be condescending when he disliked the topic. It seemed Omer was the typical University student who over uses the terms Fascist, Chauvinist, Bigot and Islamophobia to try and win arguments when they cannot communicate in a dialectic manner. Lies and manipulation of the truth is something that I struggle to understand in others. Since journalists and main stream media can defame and twist narratives with lies without any taking of responsibility, they can say anything without consequences. Omer said he wasn't Muslim but his family came from a Muslim background and observed some Muslim religious celebrations but acts with his reaction to criticism of Islam was like a religious Muslim. The way Omer acts as thiugh any criticism of Islam is an attack or should not be done without taking a course at University shows his immaturity. This young man seems to deny the problem in Islam and refuses to listen to reasonable criticism of the doctrine, refuting any apostate claims as none credible source. It was frustrating to listen to Omer who seemed to use Taqiya ( dissimulation or denial of religious belief by refuting any criticism and selecting with attacks to defend the religion) to try and protect Islam.
How could ANYONE even be friends with this kid?!!! OMG im trying to imagine a scenario where me and this kid have to spend time together and accomplish a task or something, and it feels like I'm about to have a seizure or a stroke or something (omg this kid!!!).

I think this was a very thoughtful discussion with great points from both sides. I don’t like when people act like these discussions are hateful arguments and have to take a side and hate on the person they disagree with. This doesn’t have to be a polarizing discussion. Both are very smart people.
There is one intellectual and one pseudo intellectual. You should know the difference.
I am an Indian who grew up in India and my family has seen 84 massacre of Sikhs and Ayodhya conflict between hindu and muslims. We always believed and know for sure these were politically triggered events and most Indian citizens didn't want to participate in all this. So, I kind of agree with Omer's stance that possibly Islam is being used by politicians to trigger events that benefit them. Normal Muslim maynot have much say in any of this. I am not 100% sure but all my Muslim friends and colleagues are very normal and peaceful people. Yes, they don't like if someone makes fun of their religion.
Most Germans weren't Nazis, and most Nazis didn't directly kill people. Yet Nazis were a problem.
Significant minorities might be minorities, but they're significant.

The ironic misfortune one can derive from this "debate" is how few people can even differentiate enough between real altruistic critical thought and sensationalist word smear to actually benefit from this brilliant effort toward clarity and rationalism by Sam Harris.
Sam you are as ever a brilliant philosopher and your analysis is expert but this was by no means a boring 3.5 hrs. There were misunderstandings of course (charitable) but I found it engaging and strangely entertaining. I am grateful you released the conversation. Well done.

Omar is right in implying that terrorism/extremism is better understood and contextualized politically (being on the fascist/far-right).
But Sam is right in saying that to resolve terrorism/extremism, one must target the ideology (text) directly.
