    Affilate links:
    The Lord of the Rings Trilogy on 4K UHD: amzn.to/3lluDOa
    The Hobbit Trilogy on 4K UHD: amzn.to/37h9CiB
    I can also confirm that the included Digital Copies - both theatrical and extended - are also in 4K.

      It seems amazing but i would like to ask if they made any changes to the CGI effects?

    • @NerdoftheRings
      @NerdoftheRings  3 года назад +1

      The effects also got a treatment. They weren’t entirely re-animated or anything like that. And there wasn’t any “George Lucas” treatment. I guess the best way I can think to say it is they fit with the live stuff equally as well as they did before. So if you compare live vs CG on Blu-ray, and live vs CG on 4K - those comparisons within their formats will be about the same, if that makes sense.

      @@whitemoses7913 I was blown away when I heard a Christopher lee interview saying that his death scene was taken out entirely I was like “holy shit there’s more?!” Bought the extended versions the next day lol
      One thing I thought was so interesting is how much editing and cleaning up was done to create the finished theatrical product, as I’ve never seen any extended cuts or behind the scenes of any movie really. This biggest thing that stood out to me was how the music changed in some scenes. For me, as for most fans I’m sure, the score is really what made the experience. And in the extended versions you can tell they went in and made little tweaks to where the music lines up or maybe put in a certain phrase in a different spot, and surprisingly it really shows on the finished product.
      The best example for this is of course when the Orcs are sneaking up the river to take osgiliath. I’m the extended version, I believe we actually get a flashback of when Faromir actually finds boramirs horn in the river (hopefully this is the scene, it’s been about 2 months😅) as this scene led right into the attack on osgiliath, at this point, the music had already working towards a climax, ultimately leading right when faromir makes the first strike.
      But as we know in the theatrical version we don’t even have that flashback!! So this directly led to them being able to cut out the music entirely and totally changing the mood of the scene from an inevitable, head-on battle, to a stealthy “element of surprise” type attack. And this of course was a perfect way to depict that scene. Of course this is just my speculation and maybe they had other motives but I just thought that was really cool to think about. hats off to peter and his team for the best films ever made👌🏻

  • @elrondriel
    @elrondriel 3 года назад +23

    Gotta say the extended editions I got from the early 2000's had exquisite artwork on every bit of the packaging even the discs and the fact you could get the Gollum figure and others with each made them so special and that was even before seeing the beautifully incorporated deleted/extended scenes. I don't think anything will ever compare or better them.

      Ya unfortunately for me, while the green tint is gone, the PQ isn't better imo. The HDR is bad too, barely noticeable. The Balrog scene should have been amazing, and it was not bright at all. Also the atmos mix is terrible for the center channel, while the reviewer didn't have this problem, I constantly had to adjust my volumes.

    If you want LOTR to look like the Hobbit, it’s for you. Because it’s not LOTR in 4K. There is a lot of bad Digital Noise Reduction. They removed the grain from the CGI ( back in the days they added it to make it looked like it belonged in the movie) and they changed the grading of the whole pictures. It looks like the Hobbit. And it’s not a compliment. The job was rushed for Xmas, wait for the summer release to see if they improved things after le backlash they received.
    Edit: I forgot to talk about the audio. It’s mostly good but some sounds are missing from some scenes. Such as the end of the fight between Saruman and Gandalf.

      Do your research. Def don't go for most cheapest. Also Play Station may be good but cheaper true 4K players may be better for output. So all count. I'd recommend 4K Sony Bravia 950, the Samsung Q90 or the LG CX9 OLED 65" 2020 models all now priced very well 1000$ below 1-2 yrs ago upon their release. The 2020 models all have better processing chips and dedicated audio outputs and new 2.1 HDMI ports to get better quality. Don't worry for sale discounts cause they will be priced same all yr just maybe 100$ up with no sales. And now tv makers are not making new technology for years as these suffice. 8K is useless to the eye since also disk only outputs 4K true HD. These LOTR are remastered not 4K with up scaling but true 4K HD. Wish they did Dolby Vision cause its just an extra boost in video quality. At least they did Atmos sound which is huge difference.

    I’m definitely waiting for the ultimate collector’s edition. I love these movies, but I love special features just as much. Great review!

    What are your thoughts on them stripping the film grain and the digital noise reduction?

    Too bad I don't even have a 4K TV or Blu-ray disc player. Maybe it's time to get one for this!

      You should. The Panasonic 820 was $349 not long ago. It may drop again for Christmas. It has Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support.

    I have LotR extended trilogy on DVD (I even sent away for the special slipcover that holds all of the movies) and the blu-ray set. I really am looking forward to getting the whole set on 4K and it will likely drive my equipment purchases in the near future. Like getting a better TV, for one, and _maybe_ upgrading to an Atmos system from my present Dolby PLIIx 7.1 system. I'm a little curious why they would put out just the movies now instead of waiting to have all of the bonus material together with them, too. Well, we all know the answer is MONEY, but I'm just wondering what their release plan is. Is the full package going to cost _that_ much more that offering a set that has _just_ each trilogy will appeal to some people who otherwise wouldn't get the full bonus material edition? Maybe thinking that they can just watch their old sets with their bonus material. But, wait! They said that there will be "new and never seen before material" in the new collection! So, I don't know how I feel about the whole situation and, frankly, myself. :/
    So, they put out the movies only edition to coincide with the holidays, of course. But, I'm going to wait to get the collector's edition when it comes out. Am I playing right into their money grubbing hands, here? And what happens after this? Will there be yet another "super duper deluxe combined WITH NEVER BEFORE SEEN MATERIAL" edition a few years from now? I don't know. I really like these films. (Well, mostly LotRs, but, to quote from another fantasy tale, that is another story...) But I just hate to feel like I'm being used as a money tree. :/
    Anyway, so, yes, definitely upgrade to at least 5.1 surround sound. Yeah, soundbars are getting pretty good these days, but it's amazing what a subwoofer, center and surround channels can do. Especially when there's more than one or two people watching (and spread around a room), nothing beats discrete (separate) channels of sound.

    There is the strange sensuality to the original 35 mm projection, I don’t quite understand why people need the image to be so damnsharp at 4K
