Getting familiar with carbs, and learning how to clean them is one of the most important things you could learn on a bike. It really helps with tuning and troubleshooting. Sometimes you could get a bike cheap that won't start, and it could be as simple as cleaning the carb.
@@TheMxFactory My son and I went to Hardrock in Ocala for New Years Eve. My son went out, and the bike started running like crap after the first lap. It would start and run, but would not want to rev. The minute you hit the throttle, it would want to die, as if it were starving for gas. I removed the carb, removed the main jet, and blew through it. This mucous rubber jelly came out, right onto my finger. Blew some carb cleaner through the jet, and the rest of the carb, and replaced. Started and ran like a champ. Big lesson for my son. It helped him realize the importance of understanding a carb, and knowing the general function of your bike, even if you are not a "mechanic." If I was not able to do what I did, the consequences would have been significant. 1) The day and riding fees would have probably been wasted. 2) I would have had to take it to a shop. 3) Spend who knows how much to get it fixed. 4) Shops often keep you bike for a week, even for the simplest things. 5) Dropping it off at the shop, and then picking it up from the shop. That's why I love these bike build videos, where us regular folks could add to our knowledge and understanding of our bikes.
it only needs to be adjusted if you suspect the carb is either flooding or is starved to get fuel into the bowl (float valve closes too early due to low float setup)
Just saying.... this is one of the vids that will get a million + views cause of the title and content... like for real, YZ125 are sooooo awesome!!! I'm a 2 stroke freak and my last 2 stroke dirt bike was a 2010 YZ125... thanks for this awesome vid. Merry Christmas to the YAMAHA owners :D lol
I am no mechanic, but there is something else that I've learned that I wanted to share. When I needed a bike to basically ride along with my little guy, I tried keeping the cost down and found a pretty good 2002 XR250R. Older bikes often come with some issues that pop up now and then. One issue I ran into was a leaking carb from a sticking float valve ... just peeing from the bottom. I went round and around taking the carb apart and cleaning, then rebuilding, and the issue would be resolved temporarily, but would resurface quickly. What eventually took care of the issue was polishing the float valve seat. After my experience, I would not clean a carb, or especially rebuild a carb without taking this extra measure. Here is a video that addresses the topic. ruclips.net/video/zlez_hdoWYk/видео.html
What year is that carb from mate. I had what I suspected to be a carb from a 2001 yz125, I ordered the relevant rebuild kit however the main jet is wrong. It’s a lot smaller. My main jet in my carb is the same size as the one in your video. Thanks in advance if you can help 🙏 ❤
There’s micro particles that can plug the jets part way but you can’t see and they look clear I suggest using a bristle from a wire brush and running it through any of the jets
One tip I wanted to share is using JIS screwdrivers for Japanese bikes, especially when working with soft bolt heads like on a carb. JIS is something I didn't know about until recently. You are much more likely to strip the head by using regular phillips screwdrivers. It's a very subtle difference, but could make the difference between stripping or not. Just look for the little dimple for when you should use JIS. ruclips.net/video/gEwVUZr5xxQ/видео.html
@@warrenlange6106 Phillips kinda cuts it if things aren't tight, but the minute you have to apply any kind of real pressure, you're like, what the heck. I would look at the Keihin carb on the side of the carb as confirmation that I wasn't dealing with a cheap Chinese knockoff. I used to be perplexed, until I found out about JIS.
I noticed when u put the needle back in under the float it wasn't hooked to the float is it supposed to be hooked around the float or just sit under it
My carburetor is leaking a lot when i start it(overfloat) but then it suddenly stops and only a pair of gas are still coming.... What is wrong with it?(keihin pwk 38)
I would be happy to receive your help on a problem I have with the carburetor as soon as I start the motorcycle I have a leak from the excess pipe I did a test and all the signs indicated a problem with the float or the valve after countless attempts that failed to solve the problem I decided to replace the carburetor and after the replacement the carburetor was on another motorcycle And it was normal. But my motorcycle again had leaks from the excess pipe, do you have an idea or a solution to the problem
My bike won’t even kick over with a clean carb. I have spark and 160lbs of cylinder pressure. I may have messed around with the carbs air screw and fuel screw a bit so now I have no idea what the settings should be at to kick over. How much would it cost to have a shop get the carb sorted for me?
Open your throttle tube assembley take the small wheel out un hook the cable from the throttle tube thos will give u enough slack to unhook the needle at the other end
Easy way to work on 2stroke carburetor is to disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle tube. By disconnect cable from throttle tube and housing, will free up the cable making giving penalty of cables slack to disassembly a eas. When reassembling carburetor us a pick at the cable end to lock the cable in the proper position / tension once the slide is connected pull cable tight,
Because water can cause rust or mix with the gas. If you want to bath it down as an extra precaution id suggest getting a small bottle of gas, sometimes I use an old dish detergent bottle obviously rinsed out really well and ill use gas to bath and rinse the carb. That works well. Also you could just buy an ultrasonic cleaner and solution at harbor freight for cheap.
Tech tip for carb screws... they’re not Philips on Japanese bikes. They’re the recently killed JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard). Buy some JIS drivers quick before they stop making them.

Nice. No float height check?
Great Video. This video needs a disclaimer regarding the dangers of Carburetor Cleaner & cancer.
Great video, about to take apart my carb and clean it and put it back together
Is there any tips or ways I can fine tune it in the process???

Carb cleaner will eat gaskets away. You're supposed to remove them before using carb cleaner on surfaces .
What are the gaskets? N how do u remove them?
Is there a gasket for the throttle cable? Also is the throttle cable necessary to remove to get the carb out of the bike?
No
