Williams has more first, second, and third place finishes than other results (not including DNFs). Not many people could claim they built a racing team with more podiums than other results. Frank was one of the few that had. RIP Frank Williams.
Frank Williams was my life hero. I became a monoplegic about 9 months after his crash. Seeing him still running an F1 team with a much worse disability, whilst I was struggling with my smaller problem literally gave me the strength and inspiration to make it through to the next day. Anyhow ..... 2012 Spanish GP chat; Now, I am not suggesting Bernie and co might, as a special birthday pressie. green lighted (lit?) Head to throw some of that old stylee 'witches brew' type fuel into Crashtors car, but it is to be noted that some types of that 'good stuff' can be highly volatile to the point where, if manhandled round a team garage in a similar way to normal fuel (say, at the end of a race with a high liquid/air mix), might spontaneously combust. If it did combust, this might start a nasty (and rather smokey) fire in the pit area! R.I.P, Sir.
Iirc it was an electric fire? It's so long ago that I can't be sure. But I don't think it was anything dodgy. Pat Head wouldn't have allowed anything dodgy to touch his cars!
@@y_fam_goeglyd Apparently, the fuel drain rig was leaking fuel, and the KERS caused an ignition spark as it discharged. Whilst my little story is totally apocryphal I do have to say that of all the surprise victories I have ever seen in F1, this one is the only one where I am left feeling that there is, somewhere, still some unpublicised factor that would, on revelation, give that epiphany moment.
A legend has passed. There were not a lot of people who were more inspiring than Frank Williams. His knowledge brought the sport we all love to a higher level. Condolences to everyone and Frank, Rest In Peace.
As much as I loved seeing Williams win and continuing the different winner for every race....it felt like some had kicked me in the nether region the fact it was Maldonardo. Didn't help that the williams was genuinely strong to start that season (on par with the Ferrari) until Maldonardo binned it just before the end of the opening race in Melbourne. Imagine making fun of Mazipin or Stroll for several years for them to win a race before continuing as before.
Unlike Mazapin and Stroll, Maldonado's speed was never in question and he could very easily get the Williams in amongst the top cars. His problem was that he liked to crash everytime it looked like there was a race on.
A great man in sport and we shall never forget what he has done for the sport. If in trying times, he should be seen as an example that anything can be possible and is a legend in sport in my eyes. Rest in Peace Frank
When I read the news it felt like the world stopped turning and time froze. The man who we have to thank for modernization of racing to the bare basic essentials on our road going cars that were technological genius on his masterpieces decades earlier is gone. I will forever hold a spot in my heart and mind for him. And when I get my children into motorsports will tell them the story of Sir Frank Williams, an alien who crash landed on earth and built Badass race cars to pass time.
I am glad you did this story instead of a memorial; your reasons are more than respectful, and those whom we'd expect, like F1 & Williams Racing, have already said all that needs saying. I've shed more than a few years today for a man whom I watched from his early F1 days. I'm so glad he lived long enough to see George on the podium, despite the circumstances. He must have realised that the team was on its way back up and it was okay for him to really let go. 2012 was a crazy year, with that being the craziest day of all. ( I didn't realize that DRS was that old though!) I remember seeing video of mechanics from pretty much every team, not in fire gear, yet piling into the flaming garage with extinguishers. It was where the party both for the win and Sir Frank's birthday was being held. Someone had to rescue Sir Frank (iirc it was one of the drivers?? It's a long time ago 🤷🏻♀️) because of course, his wheelchair wasn't exactly going to steer itself. Though I was always surprised that he didn't attach some sort of mini F1 engine to it... He always had the need, the need for expeditious velocity! (If you don't know that particular quote, and you were born by the late 80s, you had a deprived childhood.) What was nice, after that selfless display of bravery by everyone who helped try to fight the fire, the other teams pitched in and lent or even gave Williams any missing equipment they needed to get to Monaco in a few days. Moments like that are those which underline the things various members of the paddock say about F1 being a (rather disfunctional) family. I've seen it with "guards of honour" for retiring drivers and long-standing team members, and when a driver gets his first win (especially after a long career - look at Rubhiño's applauding audience at _that_ race in Germany) and virtually every team is smiling and congratulating him. Today's a good day to remember the good, "family" things in F1, just as we mourn the loss of one of its elders. RIP Sir Frank. Have a pint with Piers & Ayrton in the great racing bar in the sky.
Maldonado had such a weird career. A Monaco specialist who received a lifetime ban from racing at Monaco (that lasted 1 year I think). A reputation for crashing in all series, yet one of the most dominant titles in gp2 when he finally did it. And that f1 win…
When I was following Formula One regularly, like watching every race, Williams was the team to beat, and were generally the team I rooted for, not because they were good, but because they had VIlleneuve and then Montoya. I always rooted for the American guys-and by American, I'm speaking generically, not from the US, but from North or South America vs. the Europeans. Of course, they had Damon Hill too, but he seemed a good guy, for a European. Williams always seemed super cool about the sport, without the soap opera commonly associated with Formula One. Of course, that was from a long way away. Maybe they had as much soap opera as the other teams, but it didn't seem so from here. You hope there's enough value in the Williams name that the new owners will save the team and return them to respectability and not let the brand die, as has happened to so many famous Formula One names.
The 2012 Spanish Grand Prix is still my favourite Grand Prix I watched live. To see Maldonado beat Alonso and his Ferrari on home soil in a Williams was pure bliss!
Despite the incredible hardships he and his family faced following his life changing car crash, Sir Frank still put 100% effort into the running of one of the most successful teams in F1 history. A true inspiration and F1 legend has gone. RIP Sir Frank Williams. Thoughts are with Clare and the rest of the family at this incredibly difficult time
I remember someone from Williams said a while ago that the 2012 car was actually a great car that could win some races, but the issue was the drivers. Senna couldn't get his head around the Pirelli tires and Maldonado was just... him, inconsistent, he could get pole or a front row and then bin it on lap 4. Interesting 🤔
What was Bruno's problem with the Pirelli? Too much graining? XD Maldonado was too erratic, the guy was capable of so much, but he would get nervous and fudge it up

I’m relatively new to F1, so I didnt watch Williams in their hay day, but Frank Williams definitely has my respect. It’s such a massive feat for one man’s team to compete and win against the massive corporations that have dominated the sports history.
I remember seeing a Hekki Kovalinen tweet after the race and that's how I found out about the fire. My first thought at the time was "there are going to be conspiracy theories now" even though it started on Senna's side of the garage. But I'm surprised there was so little made of the potential conspiracy theories. I don't even know what caused the fire, so little a deal was made of it.

Whats the name of the song at the end?
Everyone praising Frank Williams but forgetting about Lord Crashdonado.
You could blame him here or Grosjean in Spa for Alonso not getting that 2012 title. Also the garage burning down after the race was the most shady FIA/F1 thing ever....and Williams had been involved of plenty of those during the years ^^
