Land Rover Key Fob Battery Replacement and Key Shell Change
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 19 окт 2017
- This video shows how to cut open and change the key shell of a Land Rover LR3 Key Fob and tells you how to change the battery. The battery in this type of Land Rover Key is rechargeable and does not have an easy way to open and change the battery, the only way is to cut it open and desolder the battery contact points on the key circuit board.

I never ever leave a comment however you just SAVED ME hundreds of dollars. I ordered the parts you have listed for my LR3 2005 and it WORKED!!!!! My buttons weren't bad, but the battery stopped taking a charge - similar to a smart phone as it can only take so many charges. I pried the key fob apart, took the circuit board with old battery to my local mechanic and they soldered in the new battery. Placed it in my new key fob and it now unlocks and locks my LR3 2005. The spring loaded key is tricky and haven't been able to get that working, but that's not important. THANK YOU!!!
QUESTION - I'm having the same problem!!! I think I can find a place to solder it...the problem though is Land Rover is saying that I need to replace the dead battery with the same rechargeable battery, as opposed to a regular battery. Did you use a regular battery (that was the same size obviously), or did you somehow find the "rechargeable battery" to put back in the FOB?
Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for sharing 🙏🏻
Had a case here for ages. After seeing your video I used a wood chisel to open old casing, replaced cases and it all clipped together.....awesome. Cost $5 for the casing.
nice!
I was able to get mine apart with 2 flatheads and 10 min of wrestling with it
Good 👍 Job. Thanks For Sharing.
Your fob supplier was going to take 2 months to ship so I ordered from someone else. Everything works great except the key won't pop open and button doesn't stick out as much as it should once the case is shut. Trying to figure out a fix. The key when manually opened is very stiff so I may use some grease but thinking this is not the solution I'm looking for.
Nice video , answered all my questions and enabled me to fix my fob , thanks for the help
my key works well, i just need the key fob. do i still need to change the battery or i can still use it for the new fob?
Cracking video! Love it, and thank you - just ordered everything, look forward to tackling the job over Christmas. Happy Holidays!
Sweet! good luck!
Excellent video in showing my how to do this, but by removing the battery, does the key fob retain t's memory? Or does it need to be reprogrammed again?
The key retains its original coding, does not need to be programmed.
Brilliant, thanks for the quick response. Do you have any other useful LR3 info? I just bought it 3 weeks ago and still learning about it :-)
Congrats on the LR3! Check my channel for videos, I've had it for over 4 years and put about 80,000 miles on it (for a total of aver 200,000) and wouldn't drive anything else... except an LR4. If you have any questions, just ask on one of the vids and will help you out if I can.
Great video! When I replaced mine a few years ago, the original key wouldn’t fit in the new case. Did you have to get the new key cut? Can you send me a link where you got your case? Thanks again for your time and patience.
I used the old key, not the new blank. Had no issues fitting the old key in the case, it seems that the new cases are better designed for the swapping out of the innards and blade... I got mine on amazon: amzn.to/2HT6O0H (commissions earned on Amazon Link)
Just get it from amazon, I just had to do my 2008 RRS.
I had a shop put in new battery. I noticed they only soldered one place. The circuits activated in testing before leaving the shop so I assumed its functioning. Got home but 2005 LR3 didnt respond to the buttons being pressed. Any thoughts?
thought 1. new battery not charged enough? sometimes a battery arrives 'dead" and will need a charge (my last one did).. solution: drive with the new key and it will charge up..
thought 2. pcb not installed correctly in new key fob? buttons misaligned.. not likely
thought 3. you are dealing with the corroded remote sensor wire in RHF door sill, Common issue on the LR3, wire connection corrodes and fails, stops remotes from working. Can be intermittent.
thought 4. poor soldering job of new battery?
what you think about those?
Thanks
Hi there, a quick extra Q: LR's original key battery charges every time it's in ignition (hence the battery pic on the back of the shell). Do you know if it retains the self-charging feature after such a replacement?
yes, the charging while in the ignition works.
Hi question, do i have to solder anything if im not replacing the battery??
Hi, no soldering needed if you don't change the battery.
You don't have to cut open the old case you can open it with a screw driver you just prise it open
You're probably not dealing with an original case, the originals I've encountered are waterproof and glued shut.
It was the original case from my 2005 range rover sport took a bit of prising but it came apart
Both of you are wrong Range Rover keys have have water resistance you cannot open the remote with screw driver and breaking the shell is the dumbest thing I have ever seen you can open it with heat that’s what Range Rover does to replace the battery of the remote and then they replace the adhesive to seal the remote back
You can pry the oem case open. Dont disqualify a fact because you simply cannot do it. Skill vs no skill.
@@sohankotak4050 You are 100% wrong……I literally just did it to my OEM LR3 key fob. Took less than 30 seconds
Hi, thanks for this :) I need to get a spare key for our LR3 (Which is the dogs BTW lol) it only came with one, so i'd rather get a spare now, any ideas on the best way togo about it? Also, on another subject, I keep getting a 'Suspension fault' light come on after i've been driving for about 5 miles, if I stop and turn off the ignition it resets but then comes back on after 5 miles. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the suspension other than it being a bit bouncy at times but then resets. Can you shed any light? TY
Good move, get the spare now.. The key has to be programmed by dealer or dealer alternative with the appropriate computer. I think you can get the key cut and programed for $275 at a dealer.. the air suspension issue, only way to know what is throwing the light is with software.. I use 4dcan by RSW solutions: www.rswsolutions.com/ in my experience, a light coming on (consistently and predictably) after driving was a leak at the top of the air strut.. bumpy roads hastened the light... here is what it was.. ruclips.net/video/jgLv1-j7vYA/видео.html Good Luck!
Great video! what if I need a spare, any suggestions? Thanks!
Thanks, I don't think there is a way around it... you probably have to buy a new key from the Land Rover dealer. I've heard that some shops may have the ability to program keys, but this is unconfirmed.
yeah, I would think its super expensive. I was thinking of buying a used or key with the circuit inside and ask dealer to reprogram. Still probably expensive eh
I've seen the price for a new key at dealer around $275 USD.. if you buy a used key, you would need a new key blank to be cut, a new shell, a new battery while you have it apart and then programmed... if it was me i would go for a new key from dealer.. it will be less hassle, you will get waterproof and know that it is 100%
ah good idea, 275 is not bad I guess lol better if it were 100 lol
Just got K02 tires today, pretty excited to put them on however.
Just contact your local locksmith. I just cut and program a LR3 today.
Great video but where can I get a new case.

Thank you
QUESTION - I'm having the same problem!!! I think I can find a place to solder it...the problem though is Land Rover is saying that I need to replace the dead battery with the same rechargeable battery, as opposed to a regular battery. Did you use a regular battery (that was the same size obviously), or did you somehow find the "rechargeable battery" to put back in the FOB?
hi, yes you need to replace with a rechargeable battery, the same as what I used in this video, a Panasonic VL2330 amzn.to/2xvkUBG (amazon link, I get a commision) something else to note, when you take it to have it soldered in, you may want to let them know that the battery is a rechargeable and it may not be fully charged when you give it to them, the key needs to be inserted into the ignition to fully charge up when the battery is new (I had to explain it to the people, because they tested the battery and said is was not charged)
@@ZipZapDIY ok, so rechargeable battery is needed. I can order from the link you sent, correct?
Once installed, it won't be charged yet, but WILL be able to unlock the alarm and start the car, and will eventually charge up as I drive. Is this correct???
@@ZipZapDIY ok. Just ordered the battery via your Amazon link. Question: when you took it to get soldered, was there any issues for them to do it? And was there any issues with the key fob once they soldered the battery back with the fob??
You may or may not be able to open the car with the remote when replaced, depends on how charged the battery is when it is installed. yes, it will charge up when you drive and does not take long to get charged up. I had no issues at all, the new fob snaps together, go run some errands and you'll be charged up and good to go
Does that battery has wireless charging?
Hey there. I did this for both fob's and replaced the battery in each but neither work. Do I need to do something else? I have a 2006 LR3.
who replaced the battery? There is no need to program the key after a battery change.
I replaced both. We just go the car and neither car fob worked when we got it from a dealer. So I replaced the battery in both thinking maybe they were both dead but we have had to put the key in the door since we got it.
That is a common problem on the LR3. In the wiring harness that runs underneath the passenger side door sill is a splice that corrodes and will cause that problem. Check this forum post. www.landroversonly.com/forums/f41/2005-lr3-keyless-entry-not-working-next-steps-42274/
Awesome thanks. I got the plastic door sill off but there is a hard plastic piece under there I can't seem to get to budge. Any ideas on how to get to the fuses below?
it is a wire splice, not a fuse. you may need to remove the b-pillar lower cover, remove the seat hold down screws and then prop up the seat to remove that plastic cover.
Its solder not soder?
Why on earth would anyone cut open the case. It seperates so easily with 2 flathead screw drivers.
So true Ben cheers
There was a screw
YOU DON'T HAVE TO CUT IT OPEN!!! Open the key 90° and pop it apart...
its actually not funny but good video tho
When the batre is daed
😂 remove 1 screw behind key and pull both sides apart
Oh man... You just destructed it. If you intend to just replace the battery and not the fob, then open the key, put your fingers in the middle and press outside - it will open.
Battery there is rechargeable no need replace
when the rechargeable battery fails to take a recharge, it needs to be replaced.
What a bodge job. The fob will just pop open. Also never sodered anything in my life.
How come you didn’t cut the new one lmao?
cut the new one? why?
Try $486+tax for a 2006 LR3 keyfob, and thats NOT PROGRAMMED, which they want another $200 to do!!!
Is this some kind of a joke 😢
Are you telling I need to destroy the key fob 😮
Just listening to the Sound of the wanna be Dremel Tool is telling me this whole project t is WRONG!!!
ha, you're welcome to use a HAAS UMC-1000 5-axis CNC Mill to cut it open instead of a small cheap rotary tool, but the bottom line is you gotta cut the thing apart to get to the pcb.
Mate why have you cut your key open, absolute loon.
Just use a small screw driver and pry.
Crazy man
You literally told us nothing.
theeee dumbest design ever created, god forbid you just use a common battery that can be easily replaced, i have had mine for 14years so I did this replacement and 1 circuit board was ruined my 2nd key battery is nearly toast, the replacement case will pop apart...I added a bit of silicone
