Thank you for this Steve! A realistic instruction, all is not easy with these old stoves.
But one remark: The flame should be all blue, not so much yellow at the tops.
And the new wick need to soak at least an our.

2 gallons of kerosene is $33 Canadian. I just dug out the #37 I bought at a yardsale in 1999. Never touched it until now. I have the other style of wick and it is old and dry, so it is fighting me. More parts in the wick control on mine. Thank you for sharing this information with us, Steve. Stay safe and stay warm

It actually helps if you sit the wick (Tails down) in a tray of kerosene for an hour before fitting it. It makes the job messier, but the wick slides down with a lot less fuss. Also, you shouldn't try to "Speed prime" the wick from above. It causes the wick to burn unevenly as the fuel is trying to wick AWAY from the edge to fill up the dry wick below it. You WILL get an uneven amount of fuel in top edge of the wick, and it WILL burn down the wick unevenly. Due to how the wick material burns differently with different heights of flame, it'll take an alarming amount of the rest of the wick usable length before you'll finally get that imbalance trimmed out through wick cleaning..

That's really good input for the thread I really Appreciate it, I did end End up lubricating the the area that the wick slides onto and that did help I wish I would have completely dunked it like you are saying

Very well made units mine is a S681U Equator II. Easy to change wick just rotate Counter-clockwise until tab up from latch then pull knob out to release wick holder collapse wick inwardly from pins reverse with new wick. It took me 2 tries to adjust wick height corectly 3/8inch exposed when fully to right knob

There is also K1 and K2 both kerosene but K2 is not cracked one more time so it has a little yellow tint to it K one crystal clear looks like water when you ask for kerosene K2 is what they use for mobile home furnaces things of that nature but you can’t run it in a WICK burner❤️‍🔥🇺🇸

The kerosene used here is very specifically K1? And it is clear , cost me 15 bucks a gallon, which I thought was way high . Thanks for the info. I'm not sure why you are thinking I'm using anything my K1 , but I am certainly not . I won't tell you how I learned this, but you can use your imagination.

Put a few cup of kerosene in there a slosh it around really good , tip itcand roll it around so the oil lubes up the mechanics, take your time , take the wick tube out clean and polish it up as smooth as you can ,

    • @doinsngoins

Let the kerosene soak ove a few days , keep sloshing it around

    1: Get a proper lid.
2: You should have installed the new wick before filling it with kero.
3: You definitely should have let the wick soak for an hour.
4: That wick is now burned, because you didn't let is soak.

@Steve Winkelman aka S.L.W Restorations, thanks for the reply. It's a brand new wick.
I just got this heater from ebay.
      Karasen was the clear type.
I was wondering is there a secondary ring around your heater's flame basket upper edge.
And also when the flame spreader is in place, is the bottom holes of the flame spreader even at the same level with the edge of the flame basket or higher or lower by how much?
You see, I noticed that second ring around my heater's flame basket spot welded to its upper edge. I figured it serves as an air vent for the outside of the flame. Well I tried to see if I can pass a very thin shim but could not, I thought, oh, it's clogged. So I took the plumber touch to it. It did not help but doing so I found out flame basker is 2 pieces soldered together the part that hugs the wick and the outer basket. They desordered.
I can solder it back but don't know the exact height ... that's why all the questions

Don’t buy it in the jugs like that you pay five times a ridiculous price look for your local propane and oil fuel oil dealer and ask them where they sell K-1 kerosene go there with your own 5 gallon buckets and pay what is worth not 10 times what it’s worth and right now I’m burning K-1 kerosene with red dye and it seems to burn fine no odors no monoxide just like K one!

You are most welcome. As an ex aviator and safety officer; I cringed as I watched your video. At least have a fire extinguisher handy...... :)
Oh yeah, if you put the flame spreader back in BEFORE you try to install a new wick it will go on much easier. The inside of the wick won't get caught as easily. We had two (I still have them) of those growing up in Spain and that's what dad did. The actual Aladdin "instructions" even mention that.
Don't eat too much this Thursday!
