Osaka's actually pretty smart, she just thinks in a diffrent way. If you note through the series she's pretty good with mostly random trivia. She even out witted Chiyo-Chan in an episode.

it's really weird but oddly cathartic seeing azumanga with actually decent-good animation especially osaka, she's like 1000x more expressive and i love it
I think the expression-less face she has in the actual show expresses a lot about her being more in her mind, especially considering how she seems to be autistic by her way of having a strong intelligence and memory but applying it to completely random things

After watching this show I felt sad that I will probably never meet a girl like Osaka in real life. I love her character so much, she is so pure of heart and simple. But then I realised that if I cannot find the Osaka, I will become the Osaka myself.

But I do, and I grew up in this era, to state that anime from this time had fluidity is bullsh*t, of course there is outliers but they were exceptions, not the rule. Vast majority of anime back then just like today never had budget to maintain high production value. Imo, Toei Animation was probably among the FEW studios that maintained a high production budget for many many decades. And studios like Madhouse too until they almost went bankrupt and 90% of their staff left because of horrible working conditions.

This isn't even groundbreaking specifically for 2000s TV anime since there was fluid looking TV anime all the way back into the 70s when Miyazaki was making stuff like Future Boy Conan or Anne of the green gables. I love this anime but saying that fluid animation in 2001 is genius is flat out untrue. EDIT: Given that this is not from Azumanga the anime and from a short film instead the standards are kind of higher, fluid animation for a short film is even less uncommon.

OVAs and Anime Movies had way more budget compared to TV anime series, also the Short movie was made by a different animation team and a different art director.
