    People called her a culture vulture but it wasn’t cultural appropriation it was appreciation. She did her research in and out to do the genre Justice. It was a love letter to Africa in Beyoncés words. She did the same with renaissance for ballroom culture and now with country. She is a STUDENT of music. A historian if you will.

    The Gift was so underrated but had some of Beyoncé's best songs.
    -Bigger was inspirational
    -Find Your Way Back was nostalgic
    -Mood 4 Ever was fun and shady
    -Brown Skin Girl was emotionally healing
    -Otherside was a spiritual journey

    People were absolutely calling her a culture vulture for this visual album. It’s really crazy though because most pop music from all over the world is heavily influenced from Black-American sounds. The opening song, “Bigger” is one of my favorite Beyonce songs for the exact reason that you stated, its so motivating and uplifting.

    • @yanamei111
      @yanamei111 10 месяцев назад +33

      it’s crazy bc she has always payed homage to her African roots in her music and dancing and has shown us her spiritual practices over the years! her blackness and connection to her roots has always been in our face, the fact people called her a culture vulture when she went out of her way to thoroughly research and hand pick artists from different african cultures to make sure things were done RIGHT and not exploited 🥲 crazy to me people do not see how intentional everything was from the lyrics to the instruments to the costuming and the metaphorical images we see.

      What’s crazy is that we are descendants of Africans. We are the distant brother/sisters stolen that live across the sea. You can’t STEAL what is birth right within us as well. We share history/culture/food/tradition/religion/facial features. We are BLACK we can steal what’s also ours what we also genetically share.

    Yes Beyonce received a ton of hate for this project. It started off with the album release in 2019, people were on her for cultural appropriation. Then when this movie was released in 2020 it was cultural appropriation and demonic imagery. People don’t know the research, work, and outreach that was done to bring this piece of art to us. And it’s even crazier that the same people who were attacking her for this want her to come tour in their country, it was just a bandwagon thing really. Beyoncé takes pride in her work and uses it to express herself, she wanted to show the beauty of Africa and the people around the continent and yet people didn’t like that 😒

    • @casiedomingos5197

    • @samij5093
      @samij5093 10 месяцев назад +11

      The hate really made me mad. This is NOT what cultural appropriation is this was cultural APPRECIATION and praise. When we Black Americans try to connect to our stolen roots we get dissed by native Africans. It takes so much for us to connect because we're so disconnected and I wish people empathized with that more.

    Yes! The film is called “Black Is King” to accompany the 2019 album “The Gift”! All the songs are on the album as well as interludes from the 2019 Lion King! She released a deluxe edition in 2020 with this film with “Black Parade”, a remix to “Find Your Way Back”, & none of the interludes from the film/2019 album.
    There is a lot of African culture symbolism in there & she’s literally telling the story of The Lion King in her way throughout the music!

    My interpretation of the message of this film; love who you are and step into your power. Know your history in order to create your story, take control of your own narrative, don’t let others define you.
    But it cuts deep, as an Afro-Caribbean man, the world tried to convince me that my story begins with slavery and that is the "legacy" I come from. We know society tends to demonize anything associate with Africa and Blackness, but this film spins that narrative on its head. Using the diverse African lores, mythologies and spirituality to tell a positive story using the synopsis of the Lion King to inspire us to see the bigger picture, believing in our power is what sets us free.

    Black is King tells a story. The little boy is suppose to be Simba the young lion. As the story goes you see him grow and become King like in the movie. He’ll transition from a naïve cub, to a young unsure prince, to a powerful KING to reclaim his thrown. Along the way he meets his young Queen Nala. Lots of African folklore & Black symbolism. My FAVORITE next to Beychella🐝🐝🐝

    I was having a terrible day, and this really cheered me up; I'd been waiting for so long for this to drop!
    'Bigger' (the song at the start) is something I listen to when I lack inspiration. It also makes me so emotional when I think of becoming a wife/mother due to the lyrics. I love how you appreciated her run towards the end of the song. Also, the runs at the start of 'Already'. I asked you a few days ago to react to this song. It's my first time actually watching this. I waited for you to react to it, haha!
    It's genuinely an inspirational album, and I'm so glad she was asked to create the soundtrack for The Lion King; no one was better suited. Kelly Rowland and Beyoncé's mom were in one of the videos. Also, there was criticism of the album; however, I find nothing wrong with her representing HER OWN culture, and I love that she did it and how she did it. You're right; people get mad about everything.
    There's just no one like Beyoncé; what a legacy she will be leaving; it makes me emotional when I think about it. Whilst winning a Grammy for which Beyoncé was also nominated, Adele looked her in the face during her acceptance speech and said that she's the artist of her life, and I agree wholeheartedly.
    I saw Beyoncé for the first time live this year, and it was one of the best days of my life; when I'm at the end of my life and reflecting back, it will go down as one of the best moments. She has got me through the worst moments of my life; I'm so grateful to have lived in the same lifetime as her and have been raised with her music, and to have seen her progression as an artist (I'm 25 years old now)
    I also watch your reactions for other artists, too, but mainly and most importantly for Beyoncé. I'm grateful to you for reacting to her music and delving into the world of her fans - she is the GOAT. I so can't wait for part 2 of this!

    This is not the soundtrack to the live remake of The Lipn King. This is an album inspired by TLK called The Gift. There was a soundtrack to that movie that has an additional song by Beyonce called Spirit.
    Couple of things: There is a beautiful music video to Bigger the first song you heard; There is a song called Otherside that is cut short in BIK. It is absolutely beautiful. I recommend listening to it from tbe album.
    When The Gift was released I loved it immediately. But most folks didn't get it or even bother to listen until BIK came out a full year later. Then, folks were more excited about this body of work.

    I think the scene on 54:00 with Simba riding a harse yet having the best time of his life is an interpretation of the scene where Simba in the movie was having fun eating worms/insects to survive- something a lion can not survive on. Beyoncé was getting DRAGGED up and down Twitter. And the funny thing is she knew it would happen. The reason she made this album/this film. Is because she learned about the history of the “lion sleeps tonight sample/song” she thought that this would be something people NEEDED to hear. I ignored all of it and focussen on the lessons/focus of the film. It’s aging like fine wine to me.

Posso estar sendo superficial, mas é um sentimento que eu tive.

    The reception of Black is King was pretty 50/50. There was hate from all over; from the title triggering folks and review bombing the film before its release, to black people across the diaspora having (often) critical concerns about the intentions of the film (released in 2020 at the height of BLM protests), etc..
    However, what this film means to me outweighs anything the public thought about it. The messaging weighs too much to be swayed by public opinion.
