Sunjoo Lee - Attunement

Sunjoo Lee is an artist who works across art, technology, and ecology. Drawing on knowledge gained through exchanges with ecologists and engineers, she conducts art-based research that reveals the structures of ecology, including the lifecycle of trees and biomimetic systems.
Attunement is a work powered by electricity generated through the electrochemical processes of bacteria living in wetland soil. This power system, mostly composed of biodegradable materials, explores the fusion of technology and nature while exposing the slow and uneven flow of energy. The artist investigates networks where the rhythms of human and non-human entities intertwine, focusing on the concepts of temporality, conductivity, decay, and care. She reinterprets conventional technologies, often viewed as energy consumers, as entities requiring care. By incorporating the environmentally sensitive characteristics of bacteria-reacting to changes in weather, temperature, humidity, and soil nutrients-into the energy generation process, the work embraces natural uncertainties instead of technological perfection, exploring the potential of cyclical electronic systems.

이선주는 예술과 기술, 생태학을 아우르며 활동하는 예술가이다. 생태학자 및 기술자들과의 교류를 통해 얻은 지식을 바탕으로 예술 기반의 연구를 진행하고 나무의 일생 및 생체 모방 시스템 등 생태가 지닌 구조를 드러내는 작업을 선보여왔다.
〈헤아림〉은 습지에서 살아가는 박테리아의 전기화학적 작용으로 생성된 전력으로 구동되는 작품이다. 대부분 자연 분해 가능한 재료로 제작된 이 전력 시스템은 기술과 자연의 융합을 탐구하며, 느리고 불균일한 에너지 흐름을 드러낸다. 작가는 시간성, 전도성, 부패성, 돌봄의 개념을 중심으로 인간과 비인간 의 리듬이 얽힌 네트워크를 연구하며, 전력을 소비하는 대상으로 여겨왔던 기존의 기술을 돌보아야 할 존재로 재해석한다. 이는 날씨, 온도, 습도, 토양의 영양 상태에 따라 변화하는 박테리아의 환경에 민감한 특성을 에너지 생성 과정에 포함시킴으로써, 이를 통해 작가는 기술적 완벽성 대신 자연적 불확실성을 수용하며 순환적인 전자 시스템의 가능성을 탐구하고자 한다.
