You might be exempt from keeping a logbook in Canada...watch the video!
In Canada, if you are operating within a 160km radius of your home terminal, starting and finishing at the same location every day, and NOT working for more than one employer, than you are exempt from keeping a logbook.
Know however, that your employer must keep records of your work hours; and those records are going to passed onto you--the professional driver--to maintain. This paperwork is commonly referred to a s a trip sheet.
The trip sheet must contain the driver's name, the date, and the location from which he or she is working. As well, the trip sheet must indicate which work cycle the driver is operating on and the daily and total time in each duty status line. Most drivers operating locally, will be driving a day cab, so will have to keep track of:
    • off duty
    • driving
    • and on duty, not driving time.
For Canadian drivers, operate on Cycle #1 (70 hrs in 7 days); there is little benefit for working in Cycle #2.

i just bought a Durastar 4300 with flat deck to pull my 45 Toy Hauler (personal use only). I know i'm not exempt from a CVOR due to GVWR over 6500lbs. Am i exempt from using a log book given it's for Private RV Hauler and not transporting any goods for business

Are commercial fleet pickup trucks also required to keep a log book?

Hey Rick I just bought a log truck and I won't be going outside the 160 in Ontario, as I can foresee as of now. My only thing is I'll be doing circle check, drive, load, drive, unload, drive, load, drive unload....... until the landing is done or three loads that day have been completed. Being that I"m an owner operator I will be returning home every night and not doing much on weekends, weather depending. So I'm guessing I'll always be on cycle one, my question is... if by chance I go out of my 160 for a load or truck detailing or something, how many records must I keep in the truck? I heard always have 2 weeks worth in the truck??

Hi Darryl Collins - Thank you for your comment and query. Yes, you need to have the number of days for the cycle you're on, but I recommend 2 weeks. That will keep you out of the trouble with the "diesel bears." If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hey Rick. Another video idea would be a explanation in regards to TARE and GVW.

Thanks Matthew - I have that on the list and will work to get that done sooner than later. Are you working yet - and what kind of work are you doing? Thanks Cheers Rick
