At 3:36 when she climbs a complete octave higher on "Everybody knows. ." goosebumps never cease to appear on my arms. One of the greatest vocal riffs in rock music. Bar none. And one of the best female voices I've ever heard.
+Michael Wolf I agree, I've never understood why they didn't get bigger. I remember seeing them in the 80's and thinking, these guys are going to be huge, but it never happened. I wonder why?
+Richie Mann - Mostly because the follow-up to their breakout record Bloodletting (Mexican Moon) was a commercial flop, and they broke up for a few years thereafter.
+Richie Mann I thought they were going to be huge, too. In retrospect, I'm glad they weren't, though. And, I don't think the band has ever sought "fame" (in the Hollyweird sense, anyway). They continue to tour and are more badass than ever. Best of all, they still play in smaller clubs. Totally worth it if you ever get a chance to see them again. Just don't be the guy in the mosh pit who makes a big deal out if it smelling like pot. Johnette will call you out. LOL Anyway, Michael Wolf was spot on; one of the best female voices of all time, IMHO.
I'm an old guy and a Cohen fan and I'm listening to this version for the first time and I think its excellent! She gives the song a whole new interpretation, a darker undertone, but it works. ..."so many people you just had to meet without your clothes..." Only Leonard could write a line like that.
This song was on the soundtrack for "Pump Up the Volume". Many good songs on the movies soundtrack. Concrete Blonde is sadly missed by me during my college time in upstate NY in the early 90's. Great lyrics, performed oh so well.
Only learned later this was a Leonard Cohen song. Saw it on a TV in a hotel in Coronado, CA decades ago. Main reaction: Holy f'ing god Johnette Napolitano was hot with a volcanic voice. Bought the CD later. Have always loved Concrete Blonde. And Johnette is still, well, Johnette. And so many of us are thankful for that.
Concrete Blonde deserved so much more respect and success than they ever got. loved them. One of the best female voices around if you ask me. I'll also get slammed for this, but... There is a 16 yr old girl on American Idol right now named Allison Iraheta who makes me think of Johnette a bit.
Agreed on the goose bumps.. that voice.. Johnette is one of the sexiest women ever in my book. I'll be enjoying Concrete Blonde for a long time to come.
I need this song right now, especially since the place I play at closed down yesterday. I loved seeing Concrete Blonde in Atlanta one New Years Eve. Theres nothing like them in the world.
my first dance at my wedding in 1992 was the The Blondes version of Little Wing. They are incredible, they are a time in my life held in perfect tempo and memory with each note.
There is some kind of mystery in that woman. A hidden variable that transcends her voice and her appearance. I suppose that is why Concrete Blonde fans love her so.
John Siders turning 50 next month.. Went back and just watched PUTV... Remembering when I was 22... Those truly were better days.. God I always loved that movie... And loved being 22..😎 ✌
Got into Concrete Blonde and Leonard Cohen, along with Sonic Youth, Pixies, Rollins and Soundgarden all because of the amazing soundtrack to one of my all-time favourite films, 1990's "Pump Up The Volume". Find it and see it. It could change your life it you let it!
Johnnette Napolitano tours quite a bit. Concrete Blonde started with three members. Two of those members continue to get together (unless it's changed) once a week to play, and do what J~ and Jim do best. 2-3 years ago Ms. Napolitano toured as a solo act in Australia. 3 nights in 3 different venues. Each venue had 35,000 seats and all three nights every venue was sold out.Johnnette Napolitano performed brilliantly every time she stepped out on the stage (even though she had accidentally broken several bones in her hand and possibly a finger or two days before)! They may not call themselves Concrete Blonde, but Jim and Johnette are still great friends who happen to be able to continue to work together and, in my opinion are still Hugely successful and have yet to show any signs of slowing down after 30+ years. I may be a bit of a Fan of Johnette and Jim. Hell, I'm a HUGE FAN!
i have loved this song since the first time i heard it watching Pump Up The Volume. I saw Concrete Blond the first time in 1990. I don't remeber if they played this.
bad video.. but I struggle to find voice anywhere that meets the emotion Johnette packs into her voice the last minute or so of this song. She blew me away 20 years ago and still does today.. my God.
I keep coming back to this version, although I'm a Cohen fan.........listen to 'Dance me to the end of love' by Cohen........you may like it in these times........xx
When I first heard Leonard Cohen's version on the radio a few years ago, I was sure it was an anti-Bush anthem. (Especially the first two verses.) I was surprised to learn that the song was from 1988!
After a 7 year split up Concrete Blonde got back together with a new albulm....She sings a lot about domestic violence......Stayed at the Snow Queen Lodge......
no disrespect to mr leonard cohen, but johnette and concrete blondes version is a great cover, when im fighting my depression, concrete blonde can take me places that i rarely get to go,loversion
I'm told its in the end credits of the cheap cut dvd release. But that's not really 'in' the movie. I'm just more annoyed that Cohen's original which plays completely in the beginning and partially 16 times is not on the soundtrack cd.

+Michael Wolf She just lets it RIP right there!
+Michael Wolf A musicians band ...

Everybody knows that's how it goes.....that voice is unmistakable.....so is The Band Concrete Blonde.....
One of the best songs off one of the best soundtracks ever - Pump Up The Volume.

Ms. Napolitano has a nice low register, so fitting for this song; saw it listed in "Rolling Stone's Top 10 Covers." Thanks for posting. RIP, Leonard.
Concrete Blonde is never dated, Love them
Concrete Blonde deserved so much more respect and success than they ever got. loved them. One of the best female voices around if you ask me.
I'll also get slammed for this, but... There is a 16 yr old girl on American Idol right now named Allison Iraheta who makes me think of Johnette a bit.
RIP Leonard. Had this cover in my head last few days... don't blame you for peacing out.
sorry for your loss
I'm sure it didn't hurt too much
Agreed on the goose bumps.. that voice..
Everybody knows you are so discreet, so many people you had to meet, without your clothes! Leonard was a genius!
teacher...preacher...entertainer...no question...she is entertaining...
my first dance at my wedding in 1992 was the The Blondes version of Little Wing. They are incredible, they are a time in my life held in perfect tempo and memory with each note.

No one could rock Cohen like Concrete Blonde.
Blazing, painful truth.
Pump up the volume !!!
John Siders turning 50 next month.. Went back and just watched PUTV... Remembering when I was 22... Those truly were better days.. God I always loved that movie... And loved being 22..😎 ✌
John Siders omg, I had the meanest crush on Samantha Mathis in this movie. Seriously, Ms. Mathis was like Ms. Parker, she just don't know!
TALK HARD!
Everybody knows the ME nobody knows .
This song still makes all the hair on my arms stand!!
The best cover of a Cohen's song. Even better than the Leonard's version! I love that band and it's chilling with this woman voice!
Leanord's version kinda sucks IMO.
your opinion.... but imo leohard cohen is the best.
Last year this might have been true, but the version is Justice League is pretty great
Jeff Buckley.
So now it's my turn to say: the Sigrid version sucks! And a lot! As the movie itself!

Cohen is brilliant and this enhances it a little bit more. Great , Love it.
Every time I hear this song it's better then the last time. Awesome!
Still, I hear her voice .. Still, They make me feel.. Love these guys!!!!

Great snare drum sound!
I like the way how they did this song
on pump up the Volume.
bad video.. but I struggle to find voice anywhere that meets the emotion Johnette packs into her voice the last minute or so of this song. She blew me away 20 years ago and still does today.. my God.

leonard cohen is brilliant, and this cover does him justice

This song is neat in a darkened room when she changes from male to girl sick song
Johnette is a goddess.

Beautiful, fierce goddess....
I fucking adore her.
I Love This song.
I keep coming back to this version, although I'm a Cohen fan.........listen to 'Dance me to the end of love' by Cohen........you may like it in these times........xx
how often does one come across a voice that embodies despair and hope
at the same time?
època de boas festas quando ainda rolava rock no surf
Great cover of the Cohen classic!
Jonette hughly underrated!! Fabulous voice.
When I first heard Leonard Cohen's version on the radio a few years ago, I was sure it was an anti-Bush anthem. (Especially the first two verses.) I was surprised to learn that the song was from 1988!
Leonard was Nostradamus for America's future, wasn't he?
pump up the volume!!!! movie
The closing verse makes my knees weak.
quality gothic rock
She does a great job. She picked up the tempo.
Love em
After a 7 year split up Concrete Blonde got back together with a new albulm....She sings a lot about domestic violence......Stayed at the Snow Queen Lodge......
True, that.

With that neck this drummer-guy should easily go through the concrete walls!))
Excelente!
Great voice, check out her version of "Little Wing".
Amazing Woman
Best ♥
WoW !!!
Eat your cereal with a fork and do your homework in the dark.
Talk Hard
I prefer this version a bit more than the original. Johnette Napolitano brings out the emotion in the song.
*The Devil’s Barren Tree*
Humanity is nothing but an orchard run by the gods. To not bear fruit is to be one of them.
Excelente
EXQUISITA MUSICA
lament for the 90's. it seems like cultural passion has died at least in america. when will things get any better musically?
@glennmglazer or Antony's "If it be your will"!
check out the version by The Duhks ~ very cool!
You got it right on. Also Leonard Cohen's is sort of the musical equivalent of film noir for me. Yeah, cynical, dark, like a grim detective movie.
rip mr cohen
FTW
@getdrunkgethi420 Why slap Henley? 'Everybody knows' is a Leonard Cohen song.
no disrespect to mr leonard cohen, but johnette and concrete blondes version is a great cover, when im fighting my depression, concrete blonde can take me places that i rarely get to go,loversion
The poor stay poor and the rich get rich.
Everybody knows... That's the way it goes... Everybody knows...
I'm told its in the end credits of the cheap cut dvd release. But that's not really 'in' the movie. I'm just more annoyed that Cohen's original which plays completely in the beginning and partially 16 times is not on the soundtrack cd.
the live version is much better :)
Concrete Blonde - Everybody Knows
Concrete Blonde - Everybody Knows
if God had a voice. God would sound like johnette.

Leonard Cohen ¡suck¡
