Ah, the memories! I saw this musical several times in London (2007 - 2008). Epic production. This show had everything. Spoken dialogue, songs, dancing, acrobatics (people walking on stilts, doing backflips, etc), stage combat, aerial acrobatics (many different sorts), visual illusions, disappearing acts, magic tricks (sleight of hand), audience interaction. The stage was massive. A huge revolving mechanism that keeps moving (spinning, rising, falling, changing shape) while the actors are walking on it. Lots of special effects were used during the show. Lights, projections, sound effects, smoke machines, confetti cannons, industrial fans (big ones, like 7 foot diameter), and many other things. The music was unusual but very beautiful. The composers were English, Indian, and Finnish. Middle Earth meets Bollywood meets Kalevala. The actors were a mixed bunch. Some of them were excellent in their roles (Laura Michelle Kelly, Michael Therriault, Peter Howe), others were good, some were okay, some were hilariously miscast (not naming any names here... hahaha!). Many of the ensemble actors were skilled acrobats. I would have to write a 3000 word essay to describe what it felt like to watch this show! If someone asks for a short recap I will say: J.R.R. I saw the London production several times (over a period of 10 months) and it was massive. I seriously doubt they could make it a touring version without having to scale it down. If you try to scale it down, you will ruin the magic. Theatre Royal Drury Lane was almost too SMALL for this show. This show requires a massive stage (very wide and very deep), plenty of space above the stage (aerial acrobatics), plenty of space under the stage (revolving mechanism with lifts), a large orchestral pit, and plenty of space backstage (huge ensemble cast, tons of costumes). Not to mention the lights, special effects, and the endless technical rehearsals. This show is a dream to watch but an absolute nightmare to take on tour. You could do a very, very slow tour. The show arrives in town, takes over an entire theatre (minimum of 2,000 seats) and plays for 6 months straight before moving on. But I don't see how they could make a fast or even a semi-fast touring version. It is possible technically, but you would break the bank. Or you would have to make changes to the show (scale it down considerably) and that would break the illusion. I guess the reason why this show is NOT on tour is because the producers know what they're dealing with. They don't want to break the bank and don't want to break the illusion. Certainly the most amazing show I’ve ever seen in London’s west end, and the most amazing soundtrack. I wish they would bring it back, but I heard the show was just too expensive to keep going.
I was just looking up this show after seeing the viral video with the guy on stilts in his terrifying Halloween costume, and remembered that when I saw LOTR The Musical live in London many years ago, that the LOTR horses were very similar to his stilts costume. This musical was one of the most amazing things that I have ever seen in life, and an experience that I will never forget. The songs were ok, but everything else was out of this world, and when the entire theater was engulfed in this blowing black crepe confetti with wind machines working full force to emulate the ash from Mordor, it was like you were there with Frodo. If this play ever comes back and you are a LOTR fan, you need to fly in from where ever you may be in the world to see this play live.
I wish they released the dvd for this show, I lucky enough to see it a few times but it would have been amazing to add it to my LOTR collection. I hope they release a dvd of the world tour version.
I was fortunate enough to see this show in London just before it closed. I was already aware of Jérôme Pradon's talent and was completely blown away by the entire cast. This was probably the most amazing show I've ever seen. The music was magical; the special effects mind blowing; the actors connection w each other and w the audience, awe inspiring. As long as I live, I will never understand why it failed. It certainly was not the fault of this fantastic production.
I’ve heard it was due to liability problems with the danger levels of certain stunts, they had a chorus member sustain a traumatic injury with part of the moving stage. This really isn’t an impossible challenge to address well, though, and they owed the legacy of this incredible show an effort to preserve it. It’s very sad so many of us will probably never see it.
jazminestryder it premiered in Toronto actually, then it moved to London where just a year or so ago an Arena tour was announced. We haven't heard from it since.
Are you kidding? Listen, these people are the most talented performers you are ever going to see or hear. That goes for so many of the casts of major musicals. I thought I could sing. Then I went to see Wicked in Nashville. I realized then that some people simply are born to sing, and I will never be on that level. Then I saw this musical, and it went up another notch. Basically, professional musicals are the best collection of vocal and theatrical talent in the world today.
Still one of the most spectacular musicals I've seen over the last thirty years - saw the show three times and each time I saw things I missed on previous visits - would love to see a revival - one of best scores and a cast that couldn't have been better - wonderful memories and a staging that has yet to be matched.
Really wish I could have seen this. Two of my passions combined (Tolkien and musicals). I would be over the moon watching this show. I wonder if that world tour is ever going to happen.

feel absolutely privileged to have watched this show! this made me want to be an actor for the rest of my life! never was there a show like this! compelling, emotional and just INCREDIBLE 😀
I saw this when I travelled to Toronto for it's opening run. It is a phenomenal show. I was blown away by the amount of effort and the way that the show was set up. The stage alone was enough to make me want to see it over and over again.
I'm not at all on Musicals but this one seemed spectacular. I'd willingly have seen it. And the music is very well done, with tyhe participation of one my favourite bands, the finnish Värttinä.
I saw this musical 3 times in London... it was incredible! So many details and just amazing how they managed to fit everything in it.. suddenly Andrew LLoyd Weber seemed very small 🤣🤣
I noticed that this show used colorguard- and it was! So beautiful! The technical feats alone in this show are absolutely amazing- I would've loved to have seen it in it's prime! I hope that maybe it gets adapted and maybe redone sometime in the future
I saw this while studying abroad, on a whim. The music and production elements were freaking breathtaking. I so wish they would have at least recorded and released the full production, dang shame more people didn’t get to witness it. I also wish the sheet music would get released.
I went to watch this musical in i think 2006 and we did a masterclass with the hobbits from the muscial at a dance studio (pineapple dance studios) it was brilliant, the hobbit that was showing us the moves also appeared in shaun of the dead . It was a great musical
I saw this in Toronto when it premiered, but that final scene of Gollum falling while Galadriel reprised "Wonder" was not present. I loved the musical, and I would go see it again for that scene added.
Fun fact, the show was so technically complex (huge pyrotechnics/ spinning stage/ flying actors etc) that there wasn’t a single performance in the west end that didn’t have some kind of technical difficulty
I don't what you people are looking at - that was beautiful. That music was pure and awesome and the costumes and set design looked immaculate. I got chills.
I saw this fantastic musical at Drury Lane. (i believe it was the theatre royal) and absolutely fell in love with it.....the music has pretty much become apart of my life's soundtrack and i than the cast and crew who put it on
I've been listening to this ost for a year now; it is beautiful but with the images here, it is incredible! Oh how I wish they would release a DVD (much as Cats did) so we can see as well as hear. Thanks for posting this ScottChilds24!
Matthew Parsons Question is are they using the same set as the Toronto Production. I remember this years ago and the production was massive with all of those effects. Sadly it was a mess that never made it to Broadway.
So if i re-shaved my head and eyebrows I’d actually cast as an excellent Sméagol. I’m very thin, pale, and sort of sickly n smol. I can screech great too.
after seeing pretty much every musical on the west end stage since 2001 i can safely say that this was the second most impressive show of them all. Caroline or Change wins for me simply down to the writing and performances but for pure beauty and stupendous performances LOTR was and still is incredible when i watch this after many years of not listening to the soundtrack. I NEVER watch something twice...this i did!
I was on holiday during the summer of 2008 and saw the musical in Drury lane. It was marvelous. My kids are listening to the cd at least ones a week. If they ever will played it again I will be the first to go. It was then said that it comes to Köln, Germany, which is just 150 km away from my town in the Netherlands, but I didn’t heard anything about that anymore.
When I clicked the link, I totally thought this was a fan video. I would have never guessed it was a serious production. BUT, after seeing this video, I'm already saving up my pennies. Have to give props to the hobbits - that choreography is some of the most animated I've ever seen (and while they are still singing). It's six hours until the first music store opens here. I've got my keys and credit card in hand!
Of all the stage plays that get filmed for home releases, I wish this was one of them. I love filmed stage productions and that this didn't get one is heartbreaking.
I am gutted I missed this. Looks absolutely hypnotizing. No wonder it didn't run for long though, this looks like it was so expensive to put on each night.
This was edited from the original Toronto (Canadian) production which was about 3 and a half hours, the london production was cut down to just about 3.
In the Lord of the Rings, no mention is made of Legolas' hair colour. Peter Jackson choose to go with blond hair just so Legolas would stand out a little more and to give him a noble look, he is a prince after all.
the musical has the epic element that the films failed to capture, when I heard that the Fellowship was coming this is what I expected all those years ago. I must find a live recording of this play, it surpasses 'Cats' by leagues.
So RUclips couldn’t have recommended me this 9 years ago

This is so damn beautiful! Laura Michelle Kelly singing "Lothlorien2 almost brings me to tears just because of her overwhelming performance and most beautiful and intense voice!
Lothlorien is incredible. Laura Michelle Kelly is amazing.
It is soooooo beautiful!!!! Laura Michelle Kelly is the best! I hope the relaunch the musical, it's too fantastic to send it into the vaults!!!! I am addicted to the music!
This would have been so amazing to watch. So much ear and eye candy.
I saw a lot of Musicals but this is My Favorite ...... Number 1💪👍☝️!!!
feel absolutely privileged to have watched this show! this made me want to be an actor for the rest of my life! never was there a show like this! compelling, emotional and just INCREDIBLE 😀
Who else is discovering this in 2020?
2021
2021
2222 lol jk
Me
2021 for me as well. And I'm usually on top of underrated musicals. I had NO IDEA.
You may have heard about it already, but a revival has just been announced!
@@emskulblaka !!
I wish they can post the whole musical on youtube! :)
The Gollum end piece, I know I would be sobbing if I was in the audience
I saw this while studying abroad, on a whim. The music and production elements were freaking breathtaking. I so wish they would have at least recorded and released the full production, dang shame more people didn’t get to witness it. I also wish the sheet music would get released.
Woah came here cause of Laura Michelle Kelly and she just blows me away!!!
One of the best musicals! Well done to all production team cast and Kevin Wallace the producer! ❤
i wanna make musicals like this
mystical background with a heart quaking soundtrack/musical score
I don't what you people are looking at - that was beautiful. That music was pure and awesome and the costumes and set design looked immaculate. I got chills.
How in the world did I not know about this?!?!?!??! This looks AMAZING!!!!!!!
I saw this fantastic musical at Drury Lane. (i believe it was the theatre royal) and absolutely fell in love with it.....the music has pretty much become apart of my life's soundtrack and i than the cast and crew who put it on
The music sounds so beautiful and celtic.
I've been listening to this ost for a year now; it is beautiful but with the images here, it is incredible! Oh how I wish they would release a DVD (much as Cats did) so we can see as well as hear. Thanks for posting this ScottChilds24!
This was the most amazing show I have seen. I wish it was still on in London so that I could take my children.
Theatre doesn't get any better than this, I doubt whether we will see such a magical show again.
seen it years ago it was outstanding staging was out of this world
OMG Galadriel's singing gives me full body chills!
Can you imagine how expensive this show must be...
It was estimated to break even they needed to make about £350,000 a week I think.
I'm really glade their doing a world tour for 2015.
Matthew Parsons
Question is are they using the same set as the Toronto Production. I remember this years ago and the production was massive with all of those effects. Sadly it was a mess that never made it to Broadway.
pallafox It is scheduled to be coming to Broadway this summer, or late spring.
Thank you for keeping track of these videos I was worried they would be lost to time xx so glad I got to see it as a kid
It’s time this show came back to London
This is so beautiful! Omg I wish I could have seen this live!!
I clicked on this skeptically.
Now I have chills.
I hope this comes on DVD, like The Phantom of the Opera did on its 25th anniversary.
I went to see the show in Toronto when it was in previews, I loved it!!!
Easily the best most spectacular show I have ever seen, great music, stunning stage and effects, magic and uplifting. Wicked is boring in comparison.
How is this not more popular??? This is incredible!!! And I'm not even a LOTR fan!
I feel like I'd just cry the whole showXD And Please, PLEASE make a dvd when it tours again!
wow! not what I was expecting!!!! I didn't even know a lotr musical existed until recently!!! very very unique and great singing/acting!
The composers combined Indian and Finnish musical qualities to create the music...gorgeous!
The numbers are all fantastic! Really hope it comes on at the Empire!
????? Never wanted to read LOTR BUT i do want to see this musical very much
I was there...3000 years ago...in London. 😊
I saw this show three times in London, and loved every minute of it! I can't wait for it to tour this year 😁
Watching in 2023
This gave me the pure chills, wow.
I am gutted I missed this. Looks absolutely hypnotizing. No wonder it didn't run for long though, this looks like it was so expensive to put on each night.
I can't believe I am just hearing about this NOW. Please bring it back! D:
was lucky enough to see this in London when it was on, would see it again in a heartbeat!
This is truly outstanding - IIRC it was ridiculed when it appeared, maybe the LOTR buzz had faded already, but I'd pay to see it.
i wish there was more footage
Please get revived o great musical
Is there a voice to be found in this world that is as beautiful as Laura Michelle Kelly's??
Yeeeah!
why I see this only now?
this looks gorgeous....i wish it would have come to ny! i remember dying to see it when it was in london :(
Gives you chills.
I wonder how long it is
This was edited from the original Toronto (Canadian) production which was about 3 and a half hours, the london production was cut down to just about 3.
Saw it 5 times in London it was brilliant. Haven't seen a show that comes close to the stage effects. Pity it bombed in London
Bryan Cogman on the Ringer-verse led me here.
excuse me im here for legolas can someone tell me when he appears
0:39
In the Lord of the Rings, no mention is made of Legolas' hair colour. Peter Jackson choose to go with blond hair just so Legolas would stand out a little more and to give him a noble look, he is a prince after all.
OMG! MARY POPPINS IS IN THIS!! LOVE HER!! :D
I miss this show!
I privileged to have watched it in person in London,, I always go back and watch the DVD I was given at the theatre as VIP gift
WAIT THERE IS A DVD?
wow this totally deserves a broadway run!!! i would so see it!!
Please put this on DVD!
"Master is free!" Gollum... :(
the musical has the epic element that the films failed to capture, when I heard that the Fellowship was coming this is what I expected all those years ago. I must find a live recording of this play, it surpasses 'Cats' by leagues.
It's fab. Saw it a few years ago! Excellent
