Years ago I was approaching a crossing when the signal activated. Naturally, I stopped. However, a semi with two tankers was behind me in the adjacent lane and going too fast to stop. The crossing arm came down and kept bouncing on the first tanker car. Then it slid down between the two cars and started to bow as the truck continued across the tracks. I quickly grew concerned that the the crossing arm would snap and fly into my windshield. So I put my car into park and ducked below the dash! Luckily the crossing arm didn't break. The truck driver was a jerk for not maintaining a safe speed. I had less time than him to react and I still stopped safely.
Imagine being told four hours ahead of time that you have an issue that WILL result in a derailment if it isn't fixed right away, and then still having a derailment! That is complete negligence and incompetence on CSX's part.
ive worked for 3 different class 1 railroads over the years and csx is BY FAR the worst for communication. they expect you to know everything, even when your told absolutely NOTHING. the csx crash doesn't surprise me at all. the cop lady probably called a robo number and it forwarded the message to a dispatcher that controls a terminal in an opposite direction for the way that coal train was moving, not the terminal that train departed from. That's how csx works, they just turn bad numbers into good numbers. safety means nothing, only profit matters
@redchief94 I wish I had the real data to see if regular maintenance or accidents were more expensive. The East Palestine derailment cost $1.1 billion as of January 2024. In 2023, Norfolk Southern took a 44% decline in net income from 2022.
The biggest problem on the US rail network is infrastructure maintenance. In Europe, they started upgrading to super heavyweight rail on concrete sleepers 65 years ago. So now they have passenger trains going 200+MPH. Hell, some of the freight trains do 120MPH. Not enough investment.
Simple fact: If you sit on the tracks instead of pulling off, even if that requires breaking the gates, you're an idiot. It's really not that hard to avoid getting hit by a train....GET OFF THE TRACKS!
@ayabokti161 to be fair, she was likely disoriented from being rear-ended into the tracks by the car behind her, likewise she probably panicked after her attempt to reverse to safety was prevented by the barricade. Ultimately she made the right choice to give up trying to reverse, she would’ve needed to reverse at a higher speed to break the barrier but reversing at a higher speed would’ve almost certainly resulted in her bouncing off the car behind her and back onto to the tracks again. After reversing failed she may have felt like she didn’t have enough time to check both ways to ensure she wasn’t at risk of driving into the path of a second train on the second track. It’s not her fault that this crossway is so poorly designed, there’s not enough space between the tracks and the barricade for someone to reverse to safety, additionally, the “stop” and barricade location are waaaay too close to the tracks, a multitude of other countries have safety regulations that ensure there’s enough room between the tracks and the closed barricade for someone to reverse, likewise that the location of the stopping point/barricade are further back, leaving a gap that’s usually the length of 3 cars so anyone who is rear ended won’t end up on the tracks.
He explained it. The driver of the SUV was rear ended by the truck behind her, pushing her over the crossing. What I can't figure out is that, once she started backing up, that she couldn't figure out that a car can easily bust through a crossing gate. So many of these videos show drivers who think they can't budge that almighty crossing gate. Those things are actually pretty flimsy compared to a car.
Not only that, but she was mostly clear of the involved track. She made a decision to put her vehicle back in the path of the train. If she had used her brain, she had plenty of time to pull forward and completely avoid the incident. I’ve seen so many of these where someone accidentally finds themselves inside the gates, and attempts to reverse…even trying to push other vehicles back…instead of just moving forward and off the track. You’re already blocking the rails…why does everyone instinctively reverse instead of just pulling ahead?
@johnr5252 Quit blaming her. Blame the person who pushed her onto the tracks. I guarantee you the one who pushed her onto the tracks got a ticket for following too closely.
A little off topic, would you consider an ep focusing on derailments in remote or inaccessible locations. It’s amazing how recovery crews can re open tracks in these situations. Thanks for what you do.
It’s scary to think even when emergency personal called 4 hours before a derailment to let them know the track was broken, they still didn’t stop a train from using it. When you see those signs to call for an emergency, you imagine it’s taken by the company as an emergency. It’s really disheartening to know it isn’t.
Great video very informative last week in Montclair NJ 2 commuter trains collide minor injuries 4 trains derailed I belive its still under investigation.
Trying to make sense of the nonsense: Why drivers put themselves in harm's way at rail crossings, then freeze as multi-thousand ton train runs down on them? I can't explain why, but pray that I'm never caught in similar situation.
My FIL worked for C&O Railroad for 30+ years. He tell us horror stories of things he'd seen. He'd bring home crash print outs from meetings that told of the crashes that were all car driver errors. They weren't pretty.
2:29 Theres actually another video from this same camera showing a black pickup truck slamming into the same exact crossing signal that got hit in this accident. Not sure if it happened this year though
A friendly psa to remind anyone who needs to know this that crossing gates are built to break for this exact purpose if they come down and you are on the tracks just break them it doesnt matter that the design stay safe
The first car may have been disabled. Allot of newer cars have a fuel shut off switch when impacted. Fuel pumps run until pressure builds up. So they pump a switch on them so the pump just keep pumping. I hit a pot hole hard enough once that tripped the one on the suv i was driving
The cabin of the Engines should be heavily reinforced with the very thick shatter proof glass like they have at banks to protect the engineer in collisions with large trucks etc..
I just have to interject this non-topic related comment to those watching the 4Patriot emergency food commercials: According to N.A.S.A. no food lasts 25 years.
Not to simply continue off across the tracks is the ultimate stupidity. There’s just no other way to describe it and there’s little that can be done to legislate that sort of brainlessness.
Surprised you didn't include the recent Texas crossing accident where the crew hit a truck at 70mph and died. There is body cam and cell phone footage. Midwest safety did a video of it a few weeks ago.
6:26 the bell ringing is better than nothing considering that there’s no gates there but unfortunately there’s far too many distracted drivers. How many people do you still see playing with electronic devices. Just because you’re not actually holding your phone doesn’t mean you’re not distracted by it. What’s the difference between holding it and having it sitting in the phone holder while you dial. It’s still distracted driving. People playing with the stereo which is so loud that they can’t hear the rail crossing bell ringing anyway. I’m a professional driver like thousands of others out here and I see distracted drivers all the time. There’s also too many people who can’t drive and shouldn’t have a license. It’s unfortunate for them if it immobilizez them but if you can’t drive properly and make important decisions quickly then start taking the bus.

Well, to put a bow on 2025, CSX just had a derailment on the Henderson Sub in Kentucky. 31 cars on the ground, including molten sulfur spill and small fire. Fortunately the locos didn't derail, and no injuries were reported.CSX issued a shelter in place for a 1/2 mile radius. My son works the Henderson, and he told me it's a single main and it will be a couple days to get the line cleared. Story can be found on WSMV website
Brightline hit a fire truck on a 2 track crossing. The freight train cleared the x-ing and the fire truck thought it was ok to go around the gates, not realizing Brightline was coming the other way on the other track.
What to this day and amazes me why will they not just pull up what makes a human being decide once he is on the tracks and the railing arms have come down why will he not or she not pull up what is it about humanity that makes you so so so so so so so so stupid pulling up will just damage the warning arms what is it about humanity that does that like truck drivers all they have to do is simple put their truck and drive brake the warning arms and continue pull over to the right and wait for the train to come by and call 911 what is it about humanity that makes them so so ignorant you can't fix stupid
Can someone explain 4:14 to me? Not literally but the truck driver was driving parallel to the train so the driver must’ve been blind or something. Driver makes right turn doesn’t stop and drives in front of the train? I don’t get it.
The train hitting that truck with a cop on scene is unforgivable. The cop and the driver should know what to do in the event that the track is blocked.
A local CN Engineer mentioned that he clips more Dodge Rams than all other vehicles. " They are too stupid to realize we do not have steering wheels" lmao
Last year in Kalamazoo, MI, I had to use the Blue sign to call the AMTRAK dispatcher when the van I was driving was rear ended and knocked onto the AMTRAK passing siding. The dispatcher I talked to was very professional and assured me that all trains would be stopped. Once the wrecker had removed the van from the crossing, I called the dispatcher back telling him that the tracks were now clear and that I could see no defects in the rails. I added that they should check the rails to insure I am right. From 1988-94, I was an engineer/conductor on the Kalamazoo, Lake Shore & Chicago tourist, dinner, and freight trains. So I have seen rail safety from the cab and the ground.
great documentary on train accidents. no excuse for broken rails as they could mount some kind of rail detection system on each leading engine. Although once detected, it might be too late. need to fix those high crossings where trucks get stuck too. thanks
Why is it I never seen the head on collision results that occurred in Kelso Longview , Washington, in 1995. That one was an absolute show stopper event anywhere. 8 engines head-on Collided at about 90MPH speed. I seen the aftermath about a week later, it was absolutely horrific wreckages. They left it there for about 2 weeks, looking f0r the missing crew member in recovery scenario. Reports were the box cars coiled Up 2 long into the air and some wound up on the freeway. The berm between freeway and rails was ay least 100 Feet wide the wreck was so violent.
It seems like peoples brains deactivate when the crossing arms activate lol
Nah, people's brains are deactivated most of the time, its just sometimes, just by sheer odds, they interact with a railroad crossing
The Toyota was rear ended but ya most freeze
@Aussie-Rebel-001 yeah personally I'd rather hit the barrier bar then the train
Years ago I was approaching a crossing when the signal activated. Naturally, I stopped. However, a semi with two tankers was behind me in the adjacent lane and going too fast to stop. I think sometimes that is what happens.

@brandonfront143
Train derailments are a profit loss.
@TheOtherSteel Yeah so is fixing rails. When you're a corpo where only profit matters, that makes sense to you.
@redchief94

IKR!? 😂😂😂 that one stupid lady running from her car instead of just driving forward blew mw away good grief lady....I'd hate to be her husband
insurance claim
@NationalDub No insurance pays for gross negligence.
@ayabokti161 to be fair, she was likely disoriented from being rear-ended into the tracks by the car behind her, likewise she probably panicked after her attempt to reverse to safety was prevented by the barricade. @ayabokti161 Easy to say when you are viewing it on the internet. As Mike Tyson says everybody has a plan until they get hit.
Thank you for the yearly report as always V12!
Thanks for watching!
CSX being notified and still allowing rail traffic is insane, I’m glad nobody was hurt
Exactly. Why call them if they are not going to stop traffic.
They don’t care
Someone at CSX should be fired. This was 100% preventable.
@7171-Ws6 That attitude gets expensive with time.
@klsc8510 CSX, NS and BNSF are notorious for their lack of rail safety and operating crews.
interesting how CSX spent so much on a safety train and yet has the most avoidable and dumbest accidents this year
A decent and down to earth report, no AI or inappropriate music. Very worth while watching.
How the hell did that first driver not see the train
He explained it. The driver of the SUV was rear ended by the truck behind her, pushing her over the crossing. What I can't figure out is that, once she started backing up, that she couldn't figure out that a car can easily bust through a crossing gate. True. But maybe drive off the tracks!
This is great content. Straight forward and to the point, giving us the important info and no AI voice narrator. I like to see it.
A little off topic, would you consider an ep focusing on derailments in remote or inaccessible locations. It’s amazing how recovery crews can re open tracks in these situations. Thanks for what you do.

Thanks for the detailed information and your no nonsense delivery.
Fantastic vid as usual...Thank you
6:55 Wow. I saw 6440 two years ago at Wilmington Delaware.
Always great videos...
Great video very informative last week in Montclair NJ 2 commuter trains collide minor injuries 4 trains derailed I belive its still under investigation.
Thank you for video
Excellent presentation! 🎉 🚂 🇺🇸
The front nose of a locomotive is where the toilet is and full of sand on both sides. Toilet is in the middle
Exelent video
I love the snow Plow train's ❤
Thank you for boosting my love for trains. You’re so informative and inspiring. Thanks V12!!!
Thanks for watching!
Hey whats the music at the begining of the video
Trying to make sense of the nonsense: Why drivers put themselves in harm's way at rail crossings, then freeze as multi-thousand ton train runs down on them? I can't explain why, but pray that I'm never caught in similar situation.
It's in our nature to panic, it's a survival mechanism that can be suppressed by exposure.
@christophermoore974Panic? They basically quit using their brain 🧠 😂 turn into slugs 😂
2 Separate accidents in the video were caused by CSX ignoring calls from police. How does that happen?
Local lazy employees. Similar to those disgusting dispatchers heard in a different genre of videos.
both in the atlanta area. i was thinking the same.
Had no idea Cyril Figgis was into trains 🚂
Very informative video. Thanks for sharing another great video. Dave
Thank you!
My FIL worked for C&O Railroad for 30+ years. He tell us horror stories of things he'd seen. He'd bring home crash print outs from meetings that told of the crashes that were all car driver errors. They weren't pretty.
I always look forward to your videos.
Thank you!
Great video thank you
nice job
33:43 2 locos where scrapped being 3894 and 3890, 3893 soon later maybe getting repairs
That semi driver had to have passed that train at some point.
The first car may have been disabled. Allot of newer cars have a fuel shut off switch when impacted. Fuel pumps run until pressure builds up. So they pump a switch on them so the pump just keep pumping. I hit a pot hole hard enough once that tripped the one on the suv i was driving
Grade crossings needs signs that say stuck, don’t panic drive forward
So much info! ❤ it’s entertaining and useful and about the dangers
Thank you!
18:14 closest thing we’ll get to a steam train
Excellent video!
Thanks!
trains will always win against cars. even if they derail the car will be destroyed
I've seen trains destroyed and people killed in the train when a train hits a car. It's not normal but do not use the words 'always wins'.
@cdavid8139 ok fair
Heard of the Bourbonnais, Illinois, train crash? The train lost and piled up killing ppl
@SahilShah-c1n yea i know that too.
As of today another CSX train derailed 😐 in Trenton Ky 31 cars came off the track and hazmat cars did
31:15 " . . . a minor brain bleed . . . " seems like a serious contradiction in terms.
42:11 looks like a Sw or Mp switcher of some sort is derailed
The cabin of the Engines should be heavily reinforced with the very thick shatter proof glass like they have at banks to protect the engineer in collisions with large trucks etc..
Nice video recap, Tommy. Whjat I'd like to know is who was fired for all of these?
75% of his vids are specials!
Rule of thumb.....if you're following a large truck and see a RR grade crossing ahead, start filming.
SMELLS LIKE THEY WANTED AN INSURANCE PAYOUT ON THE CROSSING ONE
3:10 I flinched so hard when I heard it
Same, I went straight to the comments
Don't blame the engineers😮
I hope CSX gives 6063 to the B&O Rail Museum, it'd be a shame to see a historic locomotive lost.
I wonder how some brains work
It's amazing that a developer in Smyrna, GA, would build an expensive-home neighborhood next to railroad tracks.
The south isnt known for smart people.
The WSOR wreck was the worst for me. My favorite railroad.
What accident is showcased in the thumbnail?
If there is a tie at the crossing-you lose 😢
What if there’s a bow tie? 🎀
I’ll see myself out 😂
Da traaaang compny??
4:50 Imagine, looking both ways before a grade crossing. Who would have imagined such a thing?
In Sleepy Eye too ! 😄 Sleepy truck driver
Great video as always!
Thanks!
Boy, this channel really rehashes a lot of content.
I just have to interject this non-topic related comment to those watching the 4Patriot emergency food commercials: According to N.A.S.A. no food lasts 25 years.
Even a slow moving locomotive can destroy cars, pickup trucks, & semi trucks. A CSX locomotive weighs 180 tons.
Not to simply continue off across the tracks is the ultimate stupidity. There’s just no other way to describe it and there’s little that can be done to legislate that sort of brainlessness.
I am curious how insurance works on these derailments and accidents.
Railroad owned insurance company sock puppet with a cartoon voice:
"Your fault! Alllll your fault :)"
Surprised you didn't include the recent Texas crossing accident where the crew hit a truck at 70mph and died. There is body cam and cell phone footage. Midwest safety did a video of it a few weeks ago.
If you're talking about the video they did 2 weeks ago, that incident occurred last year. This video is just about 2025 incidents.
113,000 views in 2 days, going strong
At 9:10; Is that a crossing gate or a signal bridge?
The wsor crew hit the tree at track speed which is 40mph
6:26 the bell ringing is better than nothing considering that there’s no gates there but unfortunately there’s far too many distracted drivers. How many people do you still see playing with electronic devices. Just because you’re not actually holding your phone doesn’t mean you’re not distracted by it. What’s the difference between holding it and having it sitting in the phone holder while you dial. It’s still distracted driving. Why are the cops not trained on the ENS signs? Why is there not a safety campaign to educate the public?
We are educated to stop behind the crossing bar . This is why people stop and not go through. You could probably put a sign that says if your on the tracks keep driving through. It will not get read.
25:24
Pardon me boy, is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo?
15:47 Something I wonder even still doing research is how all this protection and cab safety failed when it came to the pecos train derailment
Im in new zealand and I saw lots of people in cars/walking in front of trains, like what happened today, and 2 weeks ago, this is why rail saftey is a thing, to keep you safe, not get serious injury, or death
67 in 2026 The train was going 67 mph Stop 67
What a Fantastic of 2025 Railfan Video New Year to you.
Thanks!
At 11:06 , basically why does the conductor take his time to stop the train ?
Brightline hit a fire truck on a 2 track crossing. The freight train cleared the x-ing and the fire truck thought it was ok to go around the gates, not realizing Brightline was coming the other way on the other track.
I think he posted a video about that not long after it happened
27:52
You could sort of see how cops feel... most of their time is taken up dealing with the paperwork in the aftermath of incidents too, lol!
1 hr gng
The first one:She should have backed up more, I should have ran for life, and 67 mph😢
Yet people still don’t listen. At that point it should be illegal even if it wasn’t the unthinkable
Holy cow, I didn't know train accidents were so common. I guess the news only goes around when they are major
Can someone explain 4:14 to me? Not literally but the truck driver was driving parallel to the train so the driver must’ve been blind or something. Driver makes right turn doesn’t stop and drives in front of the train? I don’t get it.
I’m wondering why US crossings are always so steep. Why not make the grade more level on either side?
The train hitting that truck with a cop on scene is unforgivable. The cop and the driver should know what to do in the event that the track is blocked.
They did. CSX dispatch office dropped the ball.
18:30 build in 2030 eh? opps
Excellent video. Great information for rail fans like myself.
A local CN Engineer mentioned that he clips more Dodge Rams than all other vehicles. " They are too stupid to realize we do not have steering wheels" lmao

great documentary on train accidents. no excuse for broken rails as they could mount some kind of rail detection system on each leading engine. Although once detected, it might be too late. need to fix those high crossings where trucks get stuck too.
thanks
The sign clearly stated NO TRUCKS. I have no clue why the driver didn't see them and obey. I hope the driver lost his CDL.
Wow, that first driver in the white S.U v was pretty stupid. There was No, crossing bars on the other side.
10:25 the train company??? How does that truck driver not know how grade crossings work?
I bet you have a wonderful model railroad,, would love to see it in a future show
I wish I still had one!
"no I don't think they do" .
ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!?!
Well done. Very informative.
Thank you!
