I heard this on an 'over easy' block on a Detroit radio station years back. My father grew up in the UP, worked for commercial fisherman as a child then moved down to the Detroit area after being a deep sea diver for the army during the Korean War. He worked as a tug deckhand, but he may as well been captain, engineer, etc. He ran Great Lakes Towing company in the port of Detroit and was probably the best tugman on the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes flowed through his blood all his life. This song relates to him and is close to home for me
This song sung by Patrick Houston Daily was recorded in Cleveland at Audio Recording Studio by Bruce Gigax, who was Audio Supervisor for The Cleveland Orchestra. It features the guitar picking of Alex Bevan, and the orchestration and keyboard arrangements of Steven Mark Kohn. Many of Pat's songs were written or co-written by the author Shel Silverstein, whose love for turning a phrase was unmatched. Personally, this song speaks directly to the soul of every freshwater lover, fisherman, and sportsman who grew up on the Great Lakes, knowing their beauty and respecting their power. Thank you, Pat. You are a Legend.
I am a lifelong resident, i have run across the Mackinac Bridge, climbed the dunes and hunted its beautiful forests, it is all that it said to be and more, I would never move.
About 8 years ago, I relocated to other parts of our great country for advancing my career. When I was away, I felt a void in my spirit...I've recently relocated back to Sweet Mother Michigan. When you're away from this amazing State, you learn to appreciate what you had when you lived here. I just discovered this song and it truly speaks to me as one born and raised on this phenomenal peninsula. Many of the places in this video, I've been to and they make my heart sing. I've come back to Michigan, and I couldn't care less if I EVER cross the Michigan state line as long as I live. I wish I could speak to the write/performer of this song and tell him what this song means to me as I believe he'd truly understand...as many of you who might read this will also understand. Michigan is my home and my spiritual place...that may sound crazy to some: to others, they'll understand. Thank you for writing and posting this song...it means a lot to me.
I am from Wisconsin, we just wouldn't be what we are without the Great Lakes, the Great Lakes are what define the Upper Midwest, without them we'd just be North Iowa. Even if you are in the inland areas of the Lake states their presence is still felt.
The Great Lakes are amazing! There's more Coastline along the Great lakes than America's East and West Coast COMBINED. We're working on visiting them all 😍 Lake Erie is almost in my backyard, Lake Huron and Lake Michigan's Blue Waters have been gorgeous. Can't wait to eventually visit Lake Ontario and Lake Superior someday.
I remember a certain humanities visitor to my high school played this song on his guitar. The visitor said he grew up around Lake Superior & that he remembered hearing sailors singing this song as they worked as he walked by the docks. This songs beautiful chorus stayed with me ever since, "Sweet Mother Michigan, Father Superior coming down from Mackinaw & Sault St. Marie. Blue water Huron, flow down to Lake Erie-o, fall to Ontario, run on out to sea."
In spite of all the recent economic trouble that we've had in Michigan, scenes like this remind us that we live in a beautiful and resilient state. Better times are ahead!
Beautiful song, beautiful photos. I'm from Ohio, and I first learned this song at school in the sixth grade. I hadn't heard the song since, but it is so moving that it never went out of my mind. This is the first time I've heard the song in over ten years. Someday, I'd like to take a roadtrip and visit the Great Lakes.
Worked with Pat & Reese many (yes, I was "THAT" bouncer :) times at Peabody's Down under in the Flats .. Always a great time but damn those drunken boaters are crazy! LOL
