Its hilarious how many people came here from one piece lol, including me. I was watching it and randomly decided 'i bet i can make a straw hat' and here i am realizing a lot of other people had the same idea lol. Thanks for the video, I am definitely going to make one. Gotta make one with a more rounded top if i want to be the next pirate king.
@@weast2123Same method for pine needles too really. Hat is my next project. Just did a basket with a lid and but a pine needle or grass hat would be sick. I'll stick a pinecone in top and proudly wear that bad boy
I also want to make a hat like that, but as much as I want to, I also want to make it more durable, maybe through the addition of aluminum sheet metal from cans.
@Ensensu2 that's a great idea. I am amazed at how extremely durable the one I made is. I added some rows of horse hair. It's really incredible how once it has been bundled and sewn together it is extremely strong. I even dunk it in the river to rinse it off. I rub a balm that I made from beeswax and walnut oil on it a few times a year and it really is almost indestructible.
asdfghjk: Before readg your comment, I said the same thing to myself, minutes into watchg the video. Love the colour of the chair, stool, or table in the background.
I just harvested a 2ftx6ft area of wheat. I was careful to make sure I grew a strain that gave some really long stalks. I found your vid as I wanted to make a very very wide brim sun hat. Like the ones I’ve seen in Vogue. So this is a doable project.
Very interesting - I could see how you could use that same technique to make baskets with lids. I wonder if there's a substance that you could apply to the finished hat to give it greater durability. Beeswax or some kind of oil maybe?
I'm not sure, but you might be able to lightly coat it in linseed oil and season it in a similar fashion to seasoning iron cookware. Might make the fibers too brittle, though.
Umm.. any particular knots or just one strong enough to pull through rolled grass.... when you added nylon.... I might have more questions... and thank you
this is coming a bit late but, personally ive always preferred to use natural materials, or at least, older ones. Nylon will always have higher mechanical properties, however, for a straw hat, we dont exactly need cutting-edge materials. natural thread will work fine! ive observed that nylon tends to bend and twist differently to natural threads, find what works for you :) if you did get around to making it, i hope it worked out well
@@xirensixseo hello great video. i bought a straw hat but when i got it there was a hole in it. How do i reattach the brim or bridge of the hat to the crown
How exactly was that sewing needle made? I've tried making needles from copper wire but they always prove too soft to be all that durable, even if they're relatively easy to find if dropped.
that kid is gonna be the next pirate king lol
Climb aboard and bring along all your hopes and dreams 🤣
The one piece is real!!!

Ooh, pine needles sounds like a neat design!

I saw somewhere that they used to shellac the outside of the straw hat to make it more weatherproof in like the 1800s
Use a natural rung oil or wood preservative. #atwittsendmaui
I was just in Norfolk Island and the hat weaver there rubs baby oil on the Pandanus leaf hats he makes.

What if the grass keeps breaking?does that mean it's too dry?
I will try with my local plants. Maybe one of them will be ok. Can I use natural materials instead of nylon?

Hemp. It’s not quite as strong but it’s more organic
Hemp twine it’s not as strong but it’s more organic #atwittsendmaui
I absolutely love this
Beautiful work!
I want these in bulk. How can I buy from you and someone else you know?
Can you dampen the grass first?
That's awsome, is it also possible to make the drop to the brim not that steep and go for more of a close to 90° Angle from top part to the brim
Much respect, I had no idea. My fingers hurt watching you.
How do you measure? I mean do you just know from past makings? Or did you hold it to your head off camera?

More men need need to use their hands for skills like this. Tell me what a grown man playing pokemon has at the end of the day?
fun memories
Obviously a job that pays enough money for him to afford game's.
Something more biodegradable than a synthetic string and grass hat. That nylon thread will last a thousand years.
Money, memories, nostalgia, and being famous
poor's man hat
