- Sony TC-377 was "popping out of gear", i.e., wouldn't stay in Play, FF, or Rewind. Pretty easy fix if you already know how to get the deck apart. May apply to other models?
See here for belts,manuals, etc:

Steve is a nice guy, fair prices, fast service, great printed instructions.

I can see you posted this in 2012. I wanted to pass along that "this" is the fix. Your solution fixed the problem for me. I had been poking around trying to follow the linkage and make sense of where the problem was at. Kept coming back to the auto pause. Of course that wasn't correct. These type of things can be maddening. Everything worked fine earlier in the day and then just iike that….not working, popping out of gear/ Wow glad I found you video. And you were right, it really wasn't that difficult (actually 4 screws). It looked a bit intimidating at first but was actually easy. My advice though, take pictures as you disassemble your deck for any reason, it serves as an easy reference of what it should look like. Thanks again Neil, now I have a TC 377 worth getting belts for,
I've gotten so much help from various "how to" videos over the years, that it's really nice to hear that this little video is helping others. It feels good to be able to "give back", even a little. Thanks for the comments!
Neil, thanks so much for this fix! I had changed all my belts and already had this problem and when the belt change didnt fix it I was quite frustrated, this was my problem exactly! Thanks again for sharing with us amateurs.
Hey, I'm an amateur, too :-). Glad to help.
just wondering- where did you et new belts?
Had my doubts but amazingly your fix worked. The old 377 is back and working as it was supposed to.
Hi again - I will nominate you for nobel-price - TC-366 is working again! Thank you so much!! Greetings from Vienna/Austria
This video helped. That cam in the video is tied to the idle capstan (thin piece of metal way to the left, right in the vid, which detects tape tension). If there's no tape tension, "play" won't engage. So also check the linkage to the idle capstan.
On my 366, the tiny 3-472-220-00 Spring on 3-472-120-00 lever (E), shut off from p38 of the repair manual exploded diagram had come unseated and was slack. It returned the pawl (aka shut off) to home and now the play, FF, & RW lock in place. Thanks for the video! Wouldn't have looked closely enough to see this tiny wayward spring without your help.
Fix worked brilliantly on my friends TC-377, absolutely spot on, Thanks!
Guys,
Thanks for the comments, I'm glad it was useful to you. RE: the deck slowing down, I'm experiencing that as well, I've just been too busy w/ other projects (i.e. Max/MSP) to work on it. But I'll bet it's a pretty easy fix once the cause is nailed down. The first thing to determine is whether it's capstan motor speed (not likely), or pinch roller tension, capstan belt, idler, "tires", etc.
great video but I have a question...that paw you mentioned has a spring on it and I have the part number but Sony no longer has these parts so I am trying to just identify how the spring works?
Did try this, but it sadly didn't cure the problem for me. BTW, it's easier to remove that section if you remove or loosen the adjacent screw (that goes through the side of the case) which is what it's catching on.
In the past, it would play okay once it was about a third of the way into a tape, which, to me, suggests it's down to tape tension. The service manual shows this as being a screw to adjust, but on mine, it's a nut at the point designated, so I'm a bit stumped at the moment. Any suggestions welcome.
i also had this problem--butmine was caused by the taoe end switch wire dropping to far-cheated takingunit apart to bend the wire byusing a length of sewing thread to tie the wire in the up position-works, but machine won't stop when tape winds off reel.
i have the same problem with my Sony TC-399, it only plays when you hold the switch....If you let the switch lose then it jusy popped out gear
I have a TC-378 has the same problem. Looking for a solution for a while now gonna give this a try Thanks!
Yeah I just resurrected a Tc-366, save yourself alot of grief and time, just grease and oil everything after cleaning, DO NOT get ANY oil/grease on tape path and rubber belt surfaces
Where can I get one the Magnetic Capsule Protective Case ? for Sony TC-377
problem is a tiny spring. grease well.
HI - I have the same problem on my TC-366 and was searching for solutions! No one is realy willing to take my machine for repair. I guess that your video would solve also my problem - thanks a lot - I will start immediately to follow your hints!
ich habe einen tc-399 und auch dass problem, nur wenn ich den schalter festhalte dan tut sich etwas aber sobalt ich denn schalter los lasse dan steht die machine wieder stop...
Thanks...I just bought one machine and have exactly this problem! Do you have any recommendation where I can buy spare parts?

I need to replace a belt on my TC 377 stereo taperecorder . Is there a video showing how to do this or a manual I can get?
I have had a Sony TC-377 for many years. It has been sitting idle for a long time. I have this same problem, but also have a problem with the take-up reel not working. You can hear the motor running but the reel does not turn. I was going to look inside, but cannot get the front cover off. I removed the 4 obvious screws and the one below the heads in the center. I must be missing something because the cover does not want to come off and I do not want to force it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Very useful info! :)
