I knew the minute I saw John Lavange that he’d won. He had a really great style & was the only one who pointed his toes marching in. He had far better gymnastic ability than anyone. He also showed confidence & facial expressions which in turn made it look easy for him. I really enjoyed watching this!
He had a knee injury but still managed those extensions that you mentioned. Konner Barr has some amazing skills and a high level of precision...loved the juggling... One seemed to be having a particularly bad day, perhaps over rehearsed or something else because he was fit and highly skilled. Either way, didn't think I'd watch more then two minutes but was fascinated to the end. The skill and discipline required for that "multi tasking" is underappreciated. Coming from ballet, I know that you keep going even when your muscles tighten and ache and your legs feel like lead. Compliments to all concerned, especially John and Konner.
Because there were three rounds of different requirements, the first two competitors tied after the 3 rounds so they had to do them again to see which was better. So it was possible that others may have beat him after the 1 round, regardless the 1st guy then won and became caption while the second contestant became the co- captain
John's entrance was amazing - nobody even came close. Konner's performance was excellent as well, it's just that John was in a league of his own. Kudos to both.
Exactly, you can always tell who really put in the work. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE, and then you PRACTICE till you can't feel your muscles. The last 3 were not in shape, and didn't PRACTICE enough. They should be doing high kicks and knee drills all year round if they want that part... But they all did good and very talented. You can tell the 1st 2 guys were better prepared. Even with physical presentation.
I only disagree with you you three because this is my first time watching this and he outperformed them all right out of the gate! So he made them all look bad let's put it that way even though they all did their best I'm glad he won

I played damn good field hockey in high school but nobody was looking for a skill like that after college! Oh, never heard of field hockey? It’s a New England thang! 🏒 👧
I thought the first guy had a dynamism, presence, and spontaneity that the others didn't. I thought the second and fifth guys were close 2nd. I think the judges got it right.
Talk about #3 as much as you want... but she’s one of the drum majors this year. Girl knows her stuff. She was only a rising sophomore when she tried out in this video.
I watched this last year and have enjoyed it in 2022, also. Noticed this was John Lavange's Senior year and Konner's Junior. Next year, his Senior year Konner competed again and became Drum Major, Bravo!
It's also important that a drop doesn't lead to a complete collapse of the performance, too. Recovery is equally important. If you can miss a catch, pick it back up and keep going as if nothing had happened, that is also something they are looking for in a candidate. If you miss a catch, and it visibly throws you off of the rest of your performance, then that is something the audience is going to notice every time, too. I had an issue when I was in my high school jazz band because I was a good enough player that the instructor wanted me to take some solos but I was always terrified because I had a tendency to completely crash and burn the second I knew I did something wrong in the middle of a solo. One of the most valuable anecdotes my instructor told me one day was that pretty much every time I make a mistake during a solo, I am the only one who notices it. If I just keep on going with it, nobody will be the wiser. I know that wasn't a perfect analogy considering dropping a baton is something people are going to *see* you do no matter what, my point was that it's really important to not let it bother you.
Being a high school drum major watching this: this is insane. I have a newfound respect for college drum majors. Would I ever want to become one? No, but I respect the grind.
Relax, only Ohio State goes this hard in the drum major department (and some drum corps). Went to school at SJSU and our drum major was pretty run of the mill as far as drum majors go. Very talented, but he certainly wasn't doing crazy flips and cartwheels and splits and high kicks while catching his baton beneath his leg while he was taking us down the field. To my understanding though, Ohio State is one of the more serious college marching bands.
@@targetedandfiring4336 ours was in highschool. Heavy MMA kid tho so yeah, but dude could do everything except twirling. ironically, I taught him that because I grew up learning myself.
@nofurtherwest3474 Traditionally, a drum major is basically a conductor for the marching band. The role is far simpler than a conductor, though, as the sole responsibility while on the field is to show the time to the band and color guard. They do not create the time, that is percussion's job. Sometimes, they add special signs like raising or lowering their left hand to indicate crescendo or decrescendo, but that is not always the case. This type of drum majoring is mostly used by high schoolers and drum corps international among other high-level competitions. College drum majoring is a completely different story, and I am uncertain about its role in marching bands, but it is most prevalent in schools like Ohio State University and the University of Washington, among few other colleges.
They did the audition for this season again today on the same field, in the same manner... just a happy fluke that I was there witness it! Incredible stuff!
Completely different from HBCU. Their drum majors are very masculine with emphasis on dancing skills_ not twirling batons. Time for me to move over to Jackson State sites.😍.
@@bjwilliams True that it is different from my HBCU. All of my other marching bands was predominantly white. I just added my own Flavor. I'm imagining these guys coming out of their vehicles during a road rage situation and started twirling their batons. I'd lock the door and stay in the car. But seriously though, Morgan's smile was amazing. They're all amazing. John was born for this
Phin86 I think just like me, thousands of other people kept seeing it pop up in “recommended” and finally just clicked on it. Why youtube is recommending things that seem completely random is beyond me
i‘m from europe and have no clue how marching bands work (we do have something similar here, we call it „guggemusik“ (look it up?) but they‘re not a school thing.) But I somehow got recommended a performance of the OSUMB and i love it.
I'm here because I like watching the band's halftime performances. Was curious about what it takes to be a drum major so I typed that into my RUclips search bar.
It's for who leads the band in marching performances (and probably other things also, but idk, I'm just in high school. Someone else will probably cone along and explain it better, lol.). They're students who had to try out for the position, so I this is their audition.
Yep, I'm an Indiana fan watching this, too. I always have respect for the marching bands (I was a band nerd, myself) no matter the school, even though I feel bad for this group being stuck having to support OSU. I remember when I was a kid, my grandpa would always take me to the Saturday home games at IU and we would go into the stadium early to watch the Marching Hundred pre-show. I always loved watching them play/perform. During the homecoming game, they would invite the band alumni to come and play with the current band and that was always a hoot. There was this older guy, at least in his 50's at the time, who had to have been a drum major back in his day, and I've never seen *anyone* twirl and throw a baton as good as that guy could. He would even have two or three going at a time without missing a beat, and I don't think I ever saw him drop a toss. He was amazing. Anyway, I had a lot of fun watching these tryouts. It brought back some really good memories for me.
If you watched the video up until the 10 minutes mark then you would know that everyone performed the same routine then switched to performing their own routine later.
I don't know anything about this process, but it is SUPER impressive. Also, I think it's really cool that the band played for the tryouts. They could have just used a recording, but they gave the candidates the energy of the real band.
@@basicaccount9486 you do you just do you put up with it cause you like being in a band but after practicing a song/routine/march over and over and over and over you just get sick of doing it you do it though because you like being in the band ive done a few stage performances and by the time im halfway through rehearsals ive said my lines and done my bit so many times i honestly hate it with every fibre of my being and so do all my colleagues by the time were getting close to final rehearsal were not even hanging around we have the timing down so well we just hang out elsewhere nearby head backstage about 5 mins before were due on stage go on do out bit go off and hang out with the others backstage or outside whove also done there bit we hate the performance we loved it at first and we will love performing it for everyone when the day comes and even once its over but the monotomy of rehearsals makes us hate doing it over and over the fact we love acting and entertaining is why we go through all of this though

Stay until the end…it’s so worth it! John and Konnor should have been Co-Drum Majors together. They were amazing and their skills complimented each other! Ms. Morgan Davis’ technical errors kept her out of the running. Her energy and smile were fantastic!!!
Imagine being Barr. You have OSU drum major moves and talent that 99.9999% of humanity cannot compete with and then John LaVange is born in a similar year to you, excels in high school, matriculates to the Ohio State University along side you and just tears you a new one at drum major moves. My goodness, this youtube video has far more entertainment value than I could possibly think of. Amazing.
the first candidate was the best one. I'm sure there is a scoring system based off precision, agility, presence, & style. You cant compare this to HBCU drum majors. The styles are completely different.
WOW!! I am a 67 yr. old Allegheny Mtn. woman. I was a Majorette for my last 2 years of high School. We were the "coolest" girls in h.s. (next to the cheerleaders, of course.). SO much fun, but all these candidates were brilliant. enjoyable to watch. Bravo to all. love, maureen
For years this Cleveland native has marveled at how the OSU drum major would lead that massive Buckeye marching band down the field. I had no clue as to how that individual was selected for that honor. I greatly appreciate this video. Not only do I now realize how grueling and nerve racking this tryout must be, but I now have an appreciation for the sheer athleticism that is required. That field entrance and pregame show will now be even more impressive to me after watching this. That high step looks brutal! After 5 yards I would’ve collapsed. Congrats to all the candidates for they all did a great job! It was close but my pick did win. But #2 was incredible! I enjoyed the band as well. Thanks for this post!
Everyone of these people deserves an award that was an amazing performance by everyone of them I could never do the things they did. My husband came in the room when I was watching this and said, what are you looking at? I didn’t even know where to start or how I got here but I really enjoyed it.
I wouldn't go that far (example: Ezekiel Elliott) but I pretty much whole-heartedly agree. Imagine having to be that energetic for a 15 minute halftime show and all of pregame, dotting the i, all while making sure every high step is as high and as consistent as you can make it, AND all while being in step with no room for mistakes.
Pingu1wilson Oh I’m so glad to know this, because Konner was great here, too. He placed 1st in twirling (in my book). So close, but just edged out by John. John came ready to lead the band right here. What stood out to me about John was that he was able to maintain the high kicking while retaining the speed it takes to stay on beat - that’s not easy. He also had the best backbend - you could see that the plume on his hat would touch the ground when he was in uniform. Finally, he already had the posture and bearing that they look for in a drum major. He Looked as if he was already the drum major.

I thought the first guy had a dynamism, presence, and spontaneity that the others didn't. I thought the second and fifth guys were close 2nd. I think the judges got it right.
aw Morgan has a wonderful spirit and smile! They all did amazing!
I liked Morgan a lot too. Her baton twirling was A1.
Talk about #3 as much as you want... but she’s one of the drum majors this year. Girl knows her stuff. She was only a rising sophomore when she tried out in this video.
Good for her! 😃 I really liked her sparkle!
She was awesome and had an amazing smile. I am really happy to hear she made it this year!
Thats awesome and well deserved. She shines like the 🌞!
Very good spinner
you're the girl stop playing
I’m no expert but even I could tell the first guy deserved to be drum major. I understand he won.
I would love to learn how to run like that just to be weird
Allison Lennox easy.
1) take off shoes
2) place hot coals on the floor
3) walk on them
It ain’t that hard lol just lean back and take long strides
I wonder if they run to class like that.
SJB Nooooo.... it's hard. It's really hard to do that gracefully and with precision. That first guy was unreal.
MrJamberee your right i'm in band and i'm obsessed with watching band videos, but anyways i tried to do it and i scraped my knee really bad
I watched this last year and have enjoyed it in 2022, also. Noticed this was John Lavange's Senior year and Konner's Junior. Next year, his Senior year Konner competed again and became Drum Major, Bravo!
I like the occasional drops. Shows that they are taking it to the edge and not worried about a slip up.
I know that wasn't a perfect analogy considering dropping a baton is something people are going to *see* you do no matter what, my point was that it's really important to not let it bother you.
you guys can make fun of this, but this looks hard as hell!
Christopher Draper haahaha
It is
Core sucks ballz military is better
I know! I’m thinking even the ones that weren’t as good had amazing physicality
U have to be in shape for this.
Ditto , I was a high school drum major too . This guy , LaVange , is perfect 😮
What exactly is a drum major? for the laymen here please :)
THAT ONE TRUMPET THAT KEPT COMING IN EARLY I SWEAR
Quasimodem damnit now I can’t NOT hear it lol
Damnit He is right

Awesome! I was a Majorette from Middle School to HowardU. I am 73 years old and still get goosebumps when the Marching Band starts up! 💜💜💜
Friends & Family are still Smiling and talking about my Marching from over 50 years ago. I enjoy it all, just as I do All kinds of music. Best regards.💜💜💜 Auntie Ellen
Awwww wish I could've seen your performance.
Love you 😘
Yes, Ma’am! At fifty-seven, this former majorette is exactly the same!
I'm imagining these guys coming out of their vehicles during a road rage situation and started twirling their batons. I'd lock the door and stay in the car. But seriously though, Morgan's smile was amazing. They're all amazing. John was born for this
I want to know how a bunch of non-band people managed to end up to OSU'S DM tryout video. Funny seeing people not understanding what is going on
Phin86 I think just like me, thousands of other people kept seeing it pop up in “recommended” and finally just clicked on it.
Phin86 i have no idea what’s going on here but that first guy has beautiful kicks. what is this for ?
It's for who leads the band in marching performances (and probably other things also, but idk, I'm just in high school. Someone else will probably cone along and explain it better, lol.). They're students who had to try out for the position, so I this is their audition.
Can't believe I'm saying this...but here I am..a Michigan fan watching OSU drum major tryouts. Respect to OSU from up north. Fine band program.
Wolverines suck
fandoms are so fucking stupid
Was I the only one who thought every person had their own routine to impress judges and it wasn't 40 mins of the same thing
Caleb Hedemark nope, I did too😅😅
If you watched the video up until the 10 minutes mark then you would know that everyone performed the same routine then switched to performing their own routine later.
I don't know anything about this process, but it is SUPER impressive. Also, I think it's really cool that the band played for the tryouts. They could have just used a recording, but they gave the candidates the energy of the real band.
Did you guys notice that contestant #2 is the one who posted the video💀
Oh noooo💀💀
He’s drum major now keep hating from down there LMAO
@@Mario-gd5qk technically we are the ones at the bottom....of the reply section....

That first guy is insanely good
i know this band tired of playing that song
jasmine heim , I have a major earworm now.
No you don't get tired of playing a song in band if you really care to be in a band......
jasmine heim lol
It's the only song they know.
@@basicaccount9486 you do you just do you put up with it cause you like being in a band but after practicing a song/routine/march over and over and over and over you just get sick of doing it you do it though because you like being in the band
ive done a few stage performances and by the time im halfway through rehearsals ive said my lines and done my bit so many times i honestly hate it with every fibre of my being and so do all my colleagues by the time were getting close to final rehearsal were not even hanging around we have the timing down so well we just hang out elsewhere nearby head backstage about 5 mins before were due on stage go on do out bit go off and hang out with the others backstage or outside whove also done there bit
we hate the performance we loved it at first and we will love performing it for everyone when the day comes and even once its over but the monotomy of rehearsals makes us hate doing it over and over
the fact we love acting and entertaining is why we go through all of this though

I didn't even know this was a thing. These candidates are talented and show a high level of athleticism.
Bring back halftime shows with the bands. The talent deserves to be seen. Halftime now is overkill

John and Konnor should have been Co-Drum Majors together. They were amazing and their skills complimented each other! Ms. Morgan Davis’ technical errors kept her out of the running. Her energy and smile were fantastic!!!

Yeah. I liked her. Hopefully, she'll try again.
I heard that Konner Barr became drum major the following year, and Morgan Davis became assistant drum major. Correct me if I’m wrong
I liked her best, too. Just a great spirit & smile throughout! 😃
@@titanqueen7217 yes. Originally John was major and Konnor was assistant. Then I assume he graduated and that Konnor and Morgan both moved up.
Amazing.

Thanks for this post!
for years this Cleveland
I wonder if they grow up dreaming about this lol
Erick D Me too. I kept wondering when in life they had that thought like- drum major; that's what I want to do in college!

Yes they do. They really do.
Some people seriously do lol
Everyone of these people deserves an award that was an amazing performance by everyone of them I could never do the things they did. My husband came in the room when I was watching this and said, what are you looking at? I didn’t even know where to start or how I got here but I really enjoyed it.
John looks like he’s been training his whole
Life for this! I don’t know how this came across my recommended video feed, but I can’t stop

homeboy #1 put his ALL into that routine 💀
You've gotta be in better shape than the athletes you're cheering on! Crazy. Respect.
Exactly
I wouldn't go that far (example: Ezekiel Elliott) but I pretty much whole-heartedly agree. Imagine having to be that energetic for a 15 minute halftime show and all of pregame, dotting the i, all while making sure every high step is as high and as consistent as you can make it, AND all while being in step with no room for mistakes.
Definitely not bud
Right!
That run thingy is the coolest thing I seen a PWI do visually.
Agreed.
Congratulations to Konner Barr and Morgan Davis who are head and assistant drum majors for the 2018 season.

@@zion6031 ah. I see. Thankyou for clarifying
Lucas Collignon np friend
Pingu1wilson Oh I’m so glad to know this, because Konner was great here, too. He placed 1st in twirling (in my book). So close, but just edged out by John. John came ready to lead the band right here. What stood out to me about John was that he was able to maintain the high kicking while retaining the speed it takes to stay on beat - that’s not easy. He also had the best backbend - you could see that the plume on his hat would touch the ground when he was in uniform. Finally, he already had the posture and bearing that they look for in a drum major. He Looked as if he was already the drum major.
You know what this competition needs?
