Giallo films explore the darker human realistic - intense side of the human heart & mind without fear or favour.
We see in them a side of humanity we dislike ~ faces of greed; of & are these things not part of life ? -- we turn away in fear -- yet we know them to exist.
The films are highly artistic in that the scenes tell the story by clues, bit by bit, and thus the viewer has an active ( rather than passive role ) to play in unravelling the often complex plot and involved story line.
The red herring is used a lot - the false villain - which creates a subtext of distrust, misdirection, and surprise !
The cliche is also utilised extensively but highly symbolically and effectively too.
Gloves; wine; light; knives; candles; masks; animals; make up & ~ a role in highlighting mood and create highlights of atmospheric tension.
And of course death is always about; sometimes as a mere symbolic rebirth or more literally in a central them of mystery and investigation.
Thus themes of deceitful love, passion,depth, death, desire, and human happiness are intermingled into a heady mix -- both macabre and frightening.
A potent mix indeed.
