The amount of events that have gone on for both TF2 and Overwatch since this DougDoug video came out, are insane.
Overwatch literally doesn't exist anymore and TF2 just got back to being mostly free of bots.

The problem i have with overwatch is that some characters require much less skill than others, not in a "i'm better than you" way though, more in like "i have to put thrice the effort to win this match against the dude using that character" kind of thing
One thing about the Saxton Hale mod is that it became an official gamemode called "Vs. Saxton Hale" or VSH for short.
I believe the creator of The Stanley Parable did actually make another game, which he posed as a series of mysterious video games he got from a friend.
It gets quite existential and goes into things like purpose and communicating with each other
Doug also managed a hearthstone tournament when he worked for blizzard. He talked about it on a stream.

Yeah, the food stuff is some of his early content. If you want pain watch him cook the Zelda dishes and throw ingredients into hot oil.

Another comparison I heard back in the day was that Overwatch is a good game to play with friends, and TF2 is a good game to make new friends.

An excellent one to find another style of doug video is his comparing his stream to a book called twitch for dummied
a few people mentioned it in chat but doug's brother also made a game called The Beginner's Guide which is comparatively short but hits on the same level, would recommend
I remember when free play in the OG Overwatch had absolutely no restrictions on which characters you picked or how many. All DPS? Of course! All Reinhardts? Torb? Mercy? Hell yeah! The maps are a bit simple and every character has a single fixed loadout but it was still pretty fun in it's honeymoon phase. Free play was a blast to players and viewers. It was a great stress-reliever from comp and brought in the most players by far.
Long before Blizzard's higher-ups were being exposed for their awful behavior, things for OW and the company already starting to go downhill a year or two after the game's release: You could only have one of any character on your team in free play. They made a no-limits in the arcade, off to the side, but players didn't want to go there just to play no-limits. All that update did was make free play toxic and less fun because many people and teams just used it for comp practice

i was essentially bullied out of playing overwatch 1 because as a frequent heavy and engineer player in tf2 i played a lot of bastion, bastion didnt fit into the "meta" that often so whenever i tried to play him i got yelled at, called slurs, reported etc until i just stopped trying to play alltogether, in ow2 ive played maybe 4 games total because i dislike the changes but atleast in 3/4 games i didnt get lynched for playing my favourite, and now with tf2 free of bots i can go back to really enjoy heavy again so.. goodbye chocolate cake, you were fun when you werent full of toxic waste

Yeah there is a vid on DougDougDoug (his second channel) about with him and his brother going through the game and its one of my favorite videos. It is like 3 and a half hours long though. Definitely try and watch it on your own if you aren't gonna do a full reaction on it!
Doug has talked about it before on stream. IIRC, his family are all successful doctors of various kinds, besides him and his brother.

TF2 is ACTUALLY playable again! For now at least, I literally haven't seen a single bot in casual queue in the past few weeks
I've played TF2 for twelve years, and I've played almost exclusively on 2_fort community servers.
Bots have never been an issue there and the servers also have instant respawn and 32/64 players.
Edit: I used to play Hearthstone, but then yeah "fuck Blizzard."

Ive been doing my best to have fun by going against the meta cuz id usually always play what the team needs me to
I'm in the deadlock closed beta. It's real fun. It's a moba shooter so it feels different than hero shooters but it's got a lot of neat mechanics like parrying and long jumps. Took a bit getting used to its different playstyle but there are many aspects of it i really enjoy. Looking forward to the official release.
Also the gargoyle lady makes me think sinful things.
You should consider taking a look at LazyPurple's "How it feels to play..." videos. They talk about design and gameplay concepts rather than balance nuance.
They start off a bit rough (Spy -> Scout -> Heavy -> Soldier -> Engineer -> Sniper -> Pyro -> Demoman -> Medic [tbd]) but he's really come a long way in the quality of each video and the humor in them.

The best comparison for meta slaves is probably early helldivers 2. Everyone was complaining about the railgun being bad, meanwhile my ass was taking it on difficulty 9 with randoms, and I thrived.

On topic comment: Yeah I *loved* Genji, I got really *really* good with him, to the point I was competitive even in some of his worse leagues early on. I knew my maps, knew my health points, but he often wasn't meta or had a bad rap for his players (rightfully so, we were dicks. I need healing!)
Warning semi-rant:
I quit cause I got tired of it, one of the final straws being playing a game where I singlehandedly camped out *both* enemy supports on spawn, cycle killing them everytime they tried to leave, and even their tracer who eventually came back to try and deal with me. My team proceeded to lose 2 different 5v4 team fights, then a 5v3 team fight, where the enemy had *no supports* and at the end blamed me for not switching off Genji or contributing to the team or helping on objective.
Which isn't inaccurate, I wasn't on objective because I was busy *eating the fuck out of the back line* for an entire round. How are you still gonna lose that?! I left the game shortly after and all the blizzard shit with Diablo started happening when I was thinking about coming back and I was just like "oh ok the company is no longer worth my support so moving on!"
The fact that tf2 had pve in 2012 and blizzard made a new game for pve just to abandon it still blows me away

The thing doug didnt touch on is that in tf2 you can actually equip each character with unlockable gear that can alter the playstyle quite a bit rather than just make them do the same thing but slightly different to avoidd boredom, and make a pure offense class into a hybrid support class for example, so technically tf2 can do what overwatch does but also let you do your own thing instead of forcing you to "follow the recipe".
yes he did touch on it geanted aside from demoknight he didn't name any other subclasses but he touched on them and overwatches lack of customization

The problem with increasing competition in the competitive team shooter genre is there's only so many players to go around.
There have been plenty of great games in the genre, but they die early because people don't play them enough to fund an infinite amount of further development after launch.
TF2 is a Valve loss-leader, and Overwatch was a Hail Mary attempt at a TF2-killer that succeeded in the short term, only for Blizzard to pull the plug so they could shove Overwatch 2 down our throats.
The first indie studio to crack the code of delivering these mechanics and appealing character design on a micro budget won't eat Valve's or Blizzard's lunch, because they aren't eating lunch with these games to begin with. At best, they're selling overpriced DLC to keep the matchmaking servers up.
You should also check out his other vids, like Mario Party with food, Smash Bros with food, and Zelda vs RedDead with food, they're all great!
When it came to meta hero's in dota I was the techies guy... I almost got a thousand games with him, I had fun, I even managed to keep a 55+% WR on him, then they turned him into a league hero and he lost his shine, I stopped caring, I climbed from 2k to 4.3? with just techies.
Now I go on win streaks, tank my account and stay in the fun zone, I went back into 3k last month and am now "losing"... shucks.
The meta and what's popular is something I actively avoid, the day I start to optimise my builds or hero's is the day I stop gaming... played a few techies games in the past month and he's just boring.

I’d say the meta actively hurts the longevity of overwatch, because if they don’t update it regularly it becomes incredibly stale very quickly.

Overwatch does have some customization. Instead of a new way to eat it. Its a new color.
Tf2 is tagged on steam as "hero shooter" if you didn't know, so valve making another team shooter is promising

Even now, TF2 still doesn't have the ability to make custom maps, though you can do a lot with existing maps.
Wasnt there a extra programm to build maps from the assets?
@@nightstorm5914 I'm not aware of any method of creating a map, but you can edit where movable things (medpacks, enemies etc) are on maps. I've never seen a custom game that doesn't come on a map provided by Blizzard and I play OW2 regularly.
