Well now I've got to find a starter culture (no fish clubs near me) or try the potato-with-a-hole in the dirt method. Hadn't done this culture because of smell issues, but I'd like to give this a go - thanks for posting!
What is the cloth or mesh that you put inside the lid? I'd like to know where I can get some. I've had problems with fruit flies and drain flies invading my cultures too. Hoping that the cloth would help out with that.
Hey John! That is the exact reason I use it. It has completely eliminated contamination from them. It is called crinoline and is a fine mesh polyester fabric you can get from any fabric shop. Let me know how this goes for you please
if you keep them on the table try putting 1 or 2 on the cold floor that's what I do now the difference surprised me and I don't mean the smell and try only having about 3mm in the tub they stir themselves and remove a scoop before adding more mash seams to keep them fresher for longer 👍
hahahahahah this is like the opposite to my maggot culture recently done. I am trying to source some actual micro worm and vinegar eel culture. These are not available in Jamaica. It was really fun watching this share. I think i am going to try the yeast method. This was impressive i loved it.
@@FishmanEricRussell hahaahahaaha I am hoping to get a shipment from the states , not sure when it will arrive. I love your routine, now I want a crack at it hahahaahahah
Thanks for the great tips. I am going to try and incorporate some of those ideas. I have been using the instant packets. One question I have is: what is the material that you put between the lid and the base. Is that wax paper or a cloth of some sort? It kind of looks like a cloth. Thumbs up and a subscription from me!
Thanks so much for taking an interest in my channel. The material is a polyester cloth called crinoline. I use it to keep bugs out and still allow air transfer.
The culture I started with oatmeal has been going for 4 months now, havent even added more oatmeal at all. When I notice that it starts to dry out, I just take a spoon and run it through the mass and add some water, within 4-5 days they'll be back as if it was a new culture. Most difficult thing for me is preventing mold which mostly starts when it dries out or the sides are not cleaned off enough.
@@FishmanEricRussell As long as I keep the mold away it doesnt smell that terrible. Theyre in a small container with holes. Its actually in my office and dont notice them untill it starts to dry out.
It’s the protein in the oatmeal that smells like death. The less protein media, the better. I’ve tried masa, corn flour, and that worked well for the smell.

If you live in Canada I could send you some
Great video! I wonder if carbon can be used
To remove the smell?
Something I've not tried. I will have to add that to my list lol. Thanks for the idea!

@@FishmanEricRussell Thank you. Our local "JoAnnes" has some. I'm going to drop in and and get some. I could use it on the VE cultures as well.
@@johnstoller4898 Cool! I use it for the VE cultures as well
“They do excrete something”hahaha yes they do Fishman!!!!😆😆 great info sir!!!!
Lol! For sure guys!
The dead worms could be the cause of the smell?
They certainly add to it. Thanks for watching!
Great video bud! I breed CPDs and am always looking for easy, live foods. Much appreciated info.
So glad you liked it!

Thanks for the ideas Colin! I'm always tinkering with these things and will give those ideas a try

Hey Raliegh! If only I could send you some my friend

I am trying cornmeal paste to culture the microworms. So far no significant odour. Thanks for the tips. Fred O
I've never tried that Fred. Let me know how it goes in a couple of months. I'm always trying new things and am curious

Gordon Ramsey would be impressed with your cooking/preparation skills.
He's quite welcome to come by and do a taste test lol!

@@WesleysFishClub Thanks for letting me know
After seeing the amount of yeast you've put into your culture I've realised I've put in way too much
It doesn't take much for sure. Thanks for watching!
Do u mean cooked potato
No. It's just instant potato flake
Not me. At any rate, this is interesting because it is said, if you want to feed your large intestine gut bacteria use a little potato starch. 👍
Thanks for coming by and sharing that!
I use instant potato mix . I run my cultures very very liquid compared to what you have there. Thanks for sharing.
How do you find the smell? For some reason the actual potato seems to smell less for me

I've always thought potato and oatmeal were close in protein content. I will have to look into that. Thanks for the idea!
@@FishmanEricRussell you’re right about the protein content. They both smelled equally bad for me.
One downvote?
Why?
Thanks Aaron!
