Going through a nostalgia kick finding videos like this of the people I knew back in the day. Looking at this I'm humbled to have marched along side of you in '93.
Dick is the epic quad jam of all time...and supersonic sixes at the the end of every lick = fucking awesome. I really miss throwing down those beats....
I was told by a soprano player from 96 that one of these guys was called in only a few weeks before finals because another guy had to stop for some reason. He learned the show in a few days and played it perfect the first night they he performed. He was from the 95 line too I guess.
This makes me smile - I'm no corps alumni, I'm no die hard corps fan.... But this is what has been drilled in my head for years - THIS is what the tenor sound should be.
Damn, it's crazy how much Drum corp writing has changed. Also, i know this is Blue Devils, but the writing feels more like early 90's vanguard. I know Scott Johnson was the head honcho at SCV early 90's. I really love the 89, 90, 91,and 92 SCV lines.
i honestly watched the whole thing.... i sat here for nearly 10 minutes and just had my mind blown from a rehearsal that occured 10+ years ago. wow blue devils..... what a dream to aspire eh?
My brother Matt played contra bass this year, I remember going to rehearsals with him and recording the final run troughs at the end of camps and practices. This tenor line was amazing in November, they were always playing more complicated books and licks and playing them cleaner than any other line out there, cadets had a great line as well but the book was way easier, if I remember correctly BD scored a perfect 20 on finals night, otherwise they wouldn't have tied with Phantom for 1st. BD96
@DTQ5 I also loved all the split parts Scott Johnson wrote in 95. BD's drumline finished in 4th this year... although they were good, I think they should really get away from doing those flashy things and split the parts like they did then, it really made the difference. You are right, the tenor books in 95-97 were amazing to say the least :)
@bullrage74 There is not only one way to play tenors, or any instrument for that matter. Quad Logic just explains what Bill Bachman thinks is the best approach to playing tenors, while other people have their own ideas on the subject.
Man I wish our tenor line was this tight...but thats why they are a corp and we are a highschool band... their so tight they turn their heads together at 8:06 LoL... But seriously...these guys are an awsome line...I like the individual moments in 6:50 to 7:18... cool stuff
I know this is 5 years later however I'm not sure where this version comes from. But, John Wooton at USM wrote a street cadence very very similar to this. And it seems someone on Blue Devils staff liked it and then did their version. You can buy the Wooton version online.
now they have system blue instruments. they're less like instruments, more like marching machines that make playing your horn or drum as efficient as possible.
but unfortunatly with those names... they play totally diffrent... Gusseck Vs. McNutt complete opposite playing styles you could say the same with most of those guys
ok i dont get it and srry if this sounds nooby but in quad logic it says when crossing on adjacent drums to do fulcrum-over-fulcrum but these guys are doing wrist-over-wrist?
Quad playing has evolved so much, so cool seeing young sean vega here, a real innovator for the instrument
One of DCI's best tenor lines EVER, hands down! Damn!
i was going to play quads that year but instead i waited and played snare in 97 and won!!!!!!!!!!!!
Those were good times. Thanks for all the cool remarks.

I love as they get faster they remain in constant rhythm together. This is amazing and well done.
The quad tuning's still practically the same... Amazing
@rhssnare and I believe that Caribe solo is still the best tenor solo in DCI... 15 yrs later :)
This is seriously the best tenor line that ever existed in the history of tenor lines in my opinion
The best tenor line ever! 96, 97 BD and 2004 SCV are the best drumlines I've seen.

Used to love this and look up to this when I was playing in high school... still so satisfying. Was a freshman in 96.
This makes me smile - I'm no corps alumni, I'm no die hard corps fan....
But this is what has been drilled in my head for years - THIS is what the tenor sound should be.
'95 Throwback Solo = the tits. These guys were ballers!
@secondhandsamson124
95, 96, and 97, was a great tenor book.
I love that weird little "shake off" flash at 4:42... and it looked cool on the field.
There's a ton of early 90's SCV going on here.

6:58 love it only one i think got it but hey this is quality stuff here good job wish we still had this quality nowa days
Ah Flams Flams and more Flams... The good ol days. (sigh)
holy crap, that's at my current high school! before the new edition was built, I guess. I never knew the blue devils were here once.

one of the BEST tenor lines in DCI... no doubt
This is the best drum vid on RUclips. Hands fucking down.
lol the loud-ass subdivision near the end.
@DTQ5

secondhandsamson124 Scott doesn't write the book

BD Tenors at their best! This is amazing!
a friend of mine called a six drum set of tenors as squints, since 5 drums are called quints
Some of those intros have some fuzz on it
The good 'ol days, before Dynasty and white ambassador heads. When tenors sounded like tenors :)
i would love to just chill out with those guys. They seem great.
that was the opening quad break before one of
the tunes... dont remeber the name of the actual
song off hand though, but it was sick!!
Man they must have incredibly strong hands to do those diddles that fast and that much.
For shure! I just wrote ´95 because they still played caribe(same Players).
man i love that low end sound...oh wait...lol
I love their attitude.
Incomparable, as you mustn't know Bill Bachman simply emulated a tenor line. All the other tenor players were ghosting notes. ;)
Man I wish our tenor line was this tight...but thats why they are a corp and we are a highschool band... their so tight they turn their heads together at 8:06 LoL...
But seriously...these guys are an awsome line...I like the individual moments in 6:50 to 7:18... cool stuff
this was 12 years ago, things hae changed, the best tenor line now belongs to the cadets and phantom regiment
haha, they played caribe solo, they rock! and random stuff too! What more could i ask for?
They used a lot of arm back then, huh?
Louder
Not so far from the rumors. Someone did learn the drill and music in a week. Amazzing
Tenor GODS!!!
Camden!!! 🔥🔥🔥
This was uploaded before I was alive
LOL nice shout out to Electric Wheelchair at 5:44 !
"OHHH SHIT!" he probably found a spec of dirt on his drum
I still wish bd would have won in '95... would have schooled DCI for 5yrs straight...
Why did Camden not play Electric Wheelchair? He played Bass in SCV in 92-93, I would assume he would know the quad part.
96 BD and 92 SCV (in no particular order) best quad lines DCI has ever witnessed!
could be 95 and one is taking ashit... :)
they rock! Thats way better than the tim Jackson times :))
Didn't know Dave Turner was scared of spiders!!
im just speaking in general if i march BLUE DEVILS or even if you march BLUE DEVILS thats family so thats why i said what i said
Bro. Have you ever marched in a DCI corps? Look at the video info. "August 7, 1996, Winston-Salem, NC." It was probably a touch on the warm side.
@rhssnare yea man either this line or UNT 96
Notice how much more sound they get with mallets?
amen. I've met him too
I swear the guy on the left looks like Bill Murray
Anyone happen to know what the guy on the far left was freaking out about at 8:05? My best guess is some kind of bug.
lol - love ya man!!!
1:53- 3:02 is Dick, minus the cowbells from the original, honestly i think the rim clicks give it a better texture with the ensemble.
not at that time...they do currently. those are yahamas
that last part kinda look possible
Hey Turner! 8:06
like wannaplaytrmptjmu said they are called tenors. there are tris, quads, quints, and sextets. they are using sextets
wat happened at 8:06? he was like "oh shit!"?
Anybody know where Camden is these days?
how the hell can you even see what looks like?!!!
What are they playing at 1:50? It sounds familiar.
yeah, 1987 i think
haha at 8:20 he was trying so hard he hit the tree
90 SCV tenor line They got screwed Carmen (polishing a turd) seen it first hand both lines up close.
Can anyone help tell me what that was around the 1:50 mark? Is that a cadence or a feature? Music of that anywhere..? :)
I know this is 5 years later however I'm not sure where this version comes from. But, John Wooton at USM wrote a street cadence very very similar to this. And it seems someone on Blue Devils staff liked it and then did their version. You can buy the Wooton version online.
This was their Cadence during the 90s. Every year was similar with variations.
now they have system blue instruments. they're less like instruments, more like marching machines that make playing your horn or drum as efficient as possible.
hahaha, at 8:05 "oh shit!"
@Moog167 I wish they would go back to Yamaha
lol he sneezed at 0:46
hahahaha why did he say oh shit? that was so funny
@undrgrndking1 Nah there was a Wasp on his drum lol.
They just don't make tenor lines like the 90's BD tenor lines anymore.
@MsTenorplayer This comment makes me feel old and I'm barely 19.
but unfortunatly with those names... they play totally diffrent...
Gusseck Vs. McNutt complete opposite playing styles
you could say the same with most of those guys
ok i dont get it and srry if this sounds nooby but in quad logic it says when crossing on adjacent drums to do fulcrum-over-fulcrum but these guys are doing wrist-over-wrist?
yea i know it would've been nice to have thirteen dci rings and not just twelve you know what i mean
Witch one is Sean Vega???
Right-center. In front of the tree.
I'm gonna quit now after watching that
do u kno he said that?, i think he saw a big huge fuckin bug and it scared the shit out of him
mmmm dynasty. they do use dynasty right?
Yamaha
oohh shit...
You were in the B-corps in 96, weren't you? WTF?
8:05
UNT same year...that is all
yep i was the section leader middle snare baby all day
WTF happened to Camdon?
are u sure this isnt 1995????????
i think it is
My statement stands.
Lies???? Dave Turner calling your bluff. Bro
haha, what was that about? prolly saw a spider on his drum
