Wow Tara awesome race! I was actually running right behind you when twisted your ankle and had to sit down on that rock, and I was so impressed when you blazed past me later in the race!! I thought for sure that nobody could run another 40 miles after that, but you crushed and it finished 4th! Hope to race again sometime 😊
I found that yoga really helped strengthen my ankles. I rolled my ankle playing volleyball one night after I had been practicing yoga for several months (just one session per week), and didn't skip a beat.
You should give yourself more credit! Be proud! You got fourth woman, and finished only 21 minutes longer than your goal WITH A SPRAINED ANKLE! You did incredible! Congratulations on digging down deep and finishing so well!🦶👟🎉
🦶Sprained ankles suck. They’ve taken me out on more than one adventure. The last one was a fast-pack attempt in the Sierra High Route. Since I’ve had so many, I do lifelong PT which has, knock on all the wood out there, stopped the sprains. I’m back and the ankles are stinger than ever. Give it some time to heal. You’ve got this!!
🦶 - congrats on your finish. If not for the ankle, it sounds like you would have nailed your goal time. I know it's late but for the future and others, R.I.C.E. is no longer the recommended treatment for sprains. A better approach, which sounds counterintuitive, is massage. It'll hurt but ultimately heal faster, keep the blood flowing, reduce scar tissue, & maintain ROM, etc. Cross-training sounds like a great plan.
Sorry for the ankle sprain but you still finished with a great time. Don't know how you do it!! I met my friend and hiking partner "Steps" James Parker at the end of the race and had dinner with he and his son. Another AT hiker I know also ran the race, "Wizard" Nicholas Fox. Congrats to all of you for completing a tough race. Amazing. I look forward to the hiker introductions coming out soon!!
really appreciate seeing your experience with JFK. would love to see you take another crack at it, Tara! that AT section is probably some of the most rocky and technical, don't you think? even harder with the leaf coverage. 🦶currently 5 weeks out from my 3rd JFK50! i can relate to not getting the result you wanted. i surprised my self in 2020, completing JFK, my first 50 mile, in 07:48:38. did not fair as well last year (2023) was walking a lot on the towpath with debilitating right side it band/hip pain. didn't train right, didn't taper right and my mental health was lacking. been focused all year on this race. getting ready to put in my first 100 mile week (s?) this week (and next week?) have gotten a lot stronger, faster and better as a runner. already getting nervous, but i'm ready to crack the top 10 and win some money! 🤑

🦶what a bummer, Tara! Hope you heal up soon. I like/recommend the Mobo board for working on stability and ankle strength.

🦶 why aren't headphones allowed??
Because they want you to be aware of other runners or people around you
