    I think what's made me enjoy playing Salmon Run the most is being more forgiving of other players and myself. And recognizing when I'm not having fun on any given rotation and pop into PVP (or another activity entirely) for the rest of the night. I'm hoping the following isn't pointless rambling, but I already wrote a lot of it before considering it was too much, and-in terms of algorithm funkery-a comment is a comment.
    When I first started with Salmon Run in Splatoon 3, I would look at my golden eggs collected compared to my teammates and use that as justification for why I should leave and look for another lobby. After all, the objective is to put eggs in the basket, right? A little later on, I used power eggs as my metric instead because-unless you're overfishing or just trying to get capsules as quickly as possible-it doesn't do anything to dump extra eggs in the basket. Why should I care about anything above quota when survival depends on enemies killed? And then later than *that*, I used the number of deaths to determine who was "worth" playing with and who wasn't. You can't run eggs or kill anything if you're dead, after all...
    I think all of those perspectives held some truth to them but were mostly a poor way to approach evaluating my teammates *and* myself. Now, after about a year of playing Splatoon 3, the primary metric I use is if I felt we did well or at least everyone seemed to know what they were doing. I've played with people who eat a ton of deaths before we wipe on wave 1 or 2-and then they go on to be a great player on every shift afterwards. I've seen people with gold badges for Spawning Grounds and Marooner's Bay die in the dumbest ways possible over and over. I know that *I* certainly die in a lot of stupid ways sometimes. I know I sometimes fail to put in my share of eggs or kill enough enemies. Sometimes, I absolutely suck and sometimes I play well enough that I surprise myself.
    I suppose that was a lot of words to say that it's okay to suck, it's okay for other people to suck, and it's okay to call it quits for the day if you're having a sucky time in general. But all of those things will bother you less and you'll have a better time if you just chill out and give everyone (including yourself) the benefit of the doubt.
    ... On the flipside of that, I'm wondering when you or anyone else decides it's not worth it to hang with a particular group of freelancers. I've found that when I look for new lobbies, I generally do even worse, so I try not to do it unless I notice someone doing something egregiously bad. Or if someone is just annoying, like spamming "this way" from the beginning of the shift while refusing to paint at all.
    Anyway, great video!

      For the most part, I agree with you.
      I usually only leave if I feel like we have no chance of beating the shift at all in some way or if someone is constantly afk at the beginning of every wave since it makes me really mad since I know we need some paint. Sometimes I'll leave if I see that someone is just constantly dying a lot, like more than 5 times in multiple shifts in a row

    • @enecofan888
      @enecofan888 6 месяцев назад +5

      Overall I feel like those stats, while they do tell you SOMETHING, are just copium. If you fail wave 3 on quota, you still can't look for someone to blame just by their Numbers of eggs since someone might have run a lot of eggs in wave 1, even though you already fulfilled the quota but then neglected quota in wave 3.
      Even stats like bosses killed don't always tell the full story, in some shifts you'll weaken a lot of enemies but someone else just finishes them off every time.
      As you say, primary metric should be to evaluate yourself and other players by yourself and learn to do it in a realistic way and not looking at some stat. It's just hard to learn because most people either blame their team and can't admit their own mistakes or beat themselves up over every little thing and think they're trash. Best you can do is work on that and get a better feel for when you were actually bad and when you did well without tying your self-worth it.

      This is such a great comment, thank you!
      I think I talk about this in another video somewhere on my channel but the best thing I ever did in terms of enjoying this game and improving was focusing on myself and not what my “randos” are doing. Yes we all have the occasional thrower, but 99% of the time, it’s just other people playing the game like you. So the state of mind you have to have is acknowledgement that people are on completely different wavelengths to you and there’s 100s of different factors coming in to play. I know it sounds cliche but the only thing you can control is yourself, so focusing on what “randos” are doing isn’t the best use of energy or time.
      Stats are subjective too. I often find that players tend to do one things very well - eggs, bosses, lessers, etc. But I wished the game also told us about turf, assists and lessers splatted. I don’t often think stats are wholly reflective of what someone may have done in a game as there are other things going on that the game doesn’t tell us.
      In terms of leaving freelancers, there’s a couple of reasons why I do. If I want to try freelance lossless, I want different squads every game if possible to avoid being “carried” but also this helps me stay alert and in tune with the game as idk who is on my team. If I’m not going for a lossless run, I often change lobbies cause I’m trying to farm king waves and sometimes I’ve had days where I’ve had kings back to back as other people’s metres are full. Very rarely do I leave lobbies because of objectively bad players but I have done it occasionally - I tend to do it a bit more at higher EVP because sometimes I find people are playing out of their depth. I don’t mean it in a mean way, but I just like to move on and try a different squad. If I run into friends (which is often at high EVP) I usually stay. And yeah, I’ve had games where people throw or just do nothing so I often leave them too, cause idk what their game plan is LOL

    The advice on specials is spot on. Most people, myself included, get stuck in the mindset of saving all specials for wave three. Just about every time I have lost in wave one or two it’s because no one will use their specials. I’ve been trying to break this habit and the advice on thinking about when is the most useful time to use it rather than just as a panic button is good.
    I’ve also noticed that using specials in a game where there is no voice chat can be a psychological thing. Often you have to be the first in the pool so everyone else will jump in. It seems, to me anyway, that when I start using my specials earlier than usual other players will start using theirs for utility and not a last minute save the game scenario. I’ve run with quite a few teams where the precedent is set to use your specials when they are needed and get to wave three since it’s better to lose and not get a penalty and we do quite well.

      YES! I completely agree. I think it's another small thing you start to notice when you play Freelance often. Sometimes you using a special is like a reminder to your teammates or an alert to say "it's look chaotic here" and it sets off a chain reaction of "oh shit lets get specials out!!"
      I appreciate that sometimes people genuinely forget, I'm guilty of it too, so sometimes a reminder is so helpful!

    Great video Rachel! I agree with all of this. Whenever people ask me how to improve, I usually default to "know your weapon's strengths and weaknesses, but learn to be flexible anyway" and "Don't ignore lessers". I'll probably send this video along too! Keep up the great work. 👍

      no no, the TRUE hell of salmon run is climbing the profresh ladder. most EVP players have a good head for the mode, since they've managed to pass the filter that is profreshional. being stuck in the profresh ladder just means you're stuck in a grab bag of random players who could wipe on W1 or carry you for multiple consecutive games, depending on their skill levels.

    I managed to get the hlm badge at EVP 800 during saturday's grand big run. And the absolute adrenaline rush of it being the first one I had before taking a break at 999 still had a haunting chill down my spine. There were a few close calls and like you said, using specials at the right time, placing trust on the other three freelancers to understand their weapon roles, and good time management of multitasking to meet quota helps a lot.
    I took notes of the tips from your triumvirate video and the one teammate who threw the last egg at joe. It was at exactly 2 seconds as I saw the big guy explode after I accidentally got caught in its attack. I got that badge thanks to them and other the two freelancers who also got me to 207 eggs as my final score.

    The thing that puzzles me the most though is when I’m on freelance I average highest gold egg count AND highest normal power eggs while my deaths lurk between 1-3 and every other person 4 or 5. This was consistent with the last rotation that passed at jammin junction. So what I’m confused about is what my team is doing. Luckily I found really good friends that could help with the grind.

    • @rachelskiiiiiii
      @rachelskiiiiiii  6 месяцев назад +3

      Yeah unfortunately I think it’s inevitable that you’ll get to the point where in all your games you will be the strongest player and struggle to carry players to the level you’re playing. Imo that’s when you should look at other stuff to do - overfishing, squad games, tournaments etc - if you want to get more out of the mode itself.

  • @KirbyTear
    @KirbyTear 6 месяцев назад +2

    What helped me during Freelance were those:
    - Focus on your own and note what you did. Where could you improve? What did you excellent? Was a mistake from you the reason the team didn't met quota? Did you make the right decisions? The list of questions goes on...
    - If you get splatted, clip it. Pinpoint the why. Playing and watching are two VERY different perspectives.
    - If you meet the quota, prioritise your safety. Boss killing, turf & lesser control. Any additional golden egg is a bonus. I had some situations where the right call was just to run instead of tossing two/three more golden eggs into the basket.
    - Watch pros and note what you can copy. Begin in little steps, for instance Flyfish Splatbomb spots, how to deal with Fish Sticks efficiently, Sub Strafing for quick egg delivery or Squid Roll Armor. Add the pieces little by little and keep practicing and you will improve without even noticing.
    I am playing Salmon Run for like 7 months now, remembering I was struggling at 160% Hazard, reaching HLM once in a team (Gold rotation) and eventually reach EVP999 in Freelance (Bonerattle Arena and the recent Big Run). I may not be able to consistently succeed in HLM yet, but I can at least survive it.
    The only thing I really want for Salmon Run is a private solo shift for pure practice. But only one can dream.
    Anyways, great advices! Heavily agree with #6.

    *Pointing exuberantly at the screen at **11:30* There I am Gary, there I am!
    I'm pretty sure this was from the shift I finally got 9s on Grounds, so thanks for helping me get there, even if it was only one match in the middle lol. It just so happened to be my highest score of the whole climb too :)
    I think for myself one of the bigger things I struggle with is deaths, either due to lack of awareness (not noticing an Eel coming from behind, dropping off into lessers I don't know are there, etc) or just misjudging a situation (thinking I can get past a group of enemies to take out a boss but getting blocked more than expected, etc). The other thing I find is I'm not always staying aware of the egg count, it's really easy to be off fighting statics or whatever for longer than I think, look up at the clock, and see that we only have like 5 eggs with 20 seconds left. That and keeping track of how many of the team are down (something I'm bad at in PVP too) so I know whether I should head back to basket to revive or whatever. It's hard to train myself to keep an eye on that when there's so many other threats/areas of interest I'm trying to look at.

    I always say that EVP 500-800/HL 270-300 is training for HLM. 300-332 Hazard Level is like a review, and then 333 is the test.
    We all know about luring. I find that in higher HLs, luring isn't always wise. Sometimes, you just have to adapt to meet 30+ Quota with bosses spawning left and right. Oh a Scrapper died on shore? Take an egg or two (if possible).
    HLM is honestly addicting 😅

    • @rachelskiiiiiii
      @rachelskiiiiiii  6 месяцев назад +2

      Fully agree, it’s why I didn’t mention luring. I think people overthink it or over worry it. Luring is slow, sometimes killing things quickly is much more efficient.

    But this video definitely made me realize some of my flaws either way. While SR forced me into learning weapon roles, I should really start paying attention to how my teammates play and adjust my playstyle accordingly.

      Yeah it’s SUCH a slog going for 999 the first time. I usually advise people to do it as easiest as possible (friends, Golden Rotas etc) just to make it less frustrating the first time. Then every time after, it’s only 400-999 which feels substantially better but also allows you to get consistent practice at 400, 500, 600, etc.

    Great video, thanks. All of your tips have made me twice the player I used to be. I often find myself in situations where I am fighting a boss and know I have to make a decision whether to finish it off and die, or retreat and leave the boss to terrorize my teammates. Usually I choose the former, but probably not the best decision.
    Side note, when I watch high level players, theu seem to rarely use the "help me" callout when they are down. Is it considered annoying or do they just expect their team to already know where they are?
    Speaking of weapon roles and leaving a FL group, in the current rotation if someone has the explosher and doesnt make an effort to kill the flyfish, that is an immediate change team for me. 🤬

    • @rachelskiiiiiii
      @rachelskiiiiiii  6 месяцев назад +4

      Thanks! I'm glad they're helpful.
      In terms of the call out thing - if I'm playing at HLM with friends, I usually expect them to notice when I'm down cause I think experienced players always have an eye on current players and what they're doing; at least I do. I'm always tuned in to how many players are down or where they are on a map. In Freelance, it varies a bit. The higher EVP you are, you can expect that people notice you going down but often I do call out for help (or sometimes Booyah if it was a stupid death, which I seem to do often). The clip of me being down for a while without being revived was funny to show because they all knew I was dead, but couldn't revive me cause it was too messy. I could see them trying and it wasn't until the special showed up that I could get revived. In lower EVP, I usually ping for attention a bit more, especially if I'm on the other side of the map. I think a couple of pings isn't annoying at all though - you just need to make your way towards your teammates so they can revive you quicker.

    Lol at least I get to see you revived by a Chewoomy, which means I know that you play Chewoomy and like playing with Chewoomy. I made even more mistakes at times, and i say booyah for the most stupid and funniest deaths ever. I can get to 600 easily at times, but having some difficulty with 800 and max hazard levels. I did reach to 999 on Marooner's Bay, as I am always a solo freelancer, without max hazard level. Also rare chance in the 999s have a max hazard. I rarely used specials until either the situation is chaos or i am the one player standing have to revive my teammates using my special. Also I see players at higher evp levels are starting to paint the walls more frequently as I paint walls every single beginning of the wave, especially wave 1. The great thing about higher evp levels that if fighting a king salmon has a higher chance of getting silver and gold scales, although I did got 3 gold scales to beat Joe in salmon smokeyard that must be lucky. At higher levels thou you definitely encounter players that played before, even thou I already know that I played with Chewoomy and you before, Chewoomy knows about me, but you might not know me, and it was fun to play with people that i know from RUclips salmon run. Also i have to keep on eye on you and Chewoomy 👀 so that if i encounter you and Chewoomy i get an "oh no" expression how did i bump into them. This is a great video and agreed everything what you are saying and i am glad that I am not in this one because I am going to be embarrassed if I was in your video, in which I am not in your video. Also in some cases if my teammates getting eggs into the basket I tend to lure lessers or bosses to me so my teammates can be safe from those lesser and bosses.
