Rudi Lubbers people brought Green over to Belgium to spar before the Ali fight. Ali asked Green how good he was, he said some to the effect of, "I'm 180 lbs, and I went into the ring drunk, and I still had to take it easy on him."
Never miss a rich the boxing historian upload. Thanks brother. You and boxing life and Resume boxing and boxing guide are my all time go to channels. You do a excellent job of telling the story of the fights and the fighters Rich. 😊👊
Not only was Floyd Patterson a great fighter but more importantly he was a great human being , despite the verbal battering Green dished out before the fight Patterson was still the ultimate sportsman in the ring when they fought .
I know every boxers stories are different and thats what makes these videos amazing. It just hard to like them after they committed atrocities to people. I love this channel
What a wild story, while I feel very little sympathy for Green himself I can't help but to feel some degree of sadness about the whole thing, just the huge waste not only of his life and several others also, an awfully common tale when drugs are involved.
Boxing is often a last resort for people to make something of themselves without resorting to crime (though sometimes the sport itself was connected to crime). Many legendary fighters are/were convicts or just didn't have any other skills outside of boxing. If it weren't for their talent, many would be dead or in jail.
The toll of narcotics in the American culture is massive, for sure. Another fascinating glimpse into a bizarre life by the master raconteur Rich the Fight Historian. Charley "Devil" Green was reportedly a friend of boxing journalist/muckraker Malcolm "Flash" Gordon.
Good video Rich. Green shouldn't bad mouthed both Floyd Patterson and Larry Holmes who both teach Green a lesson by knocking him out in 10 and 1 respectively. It was a sad life after boxing for Green. Anyways, keep it up.
Rich, this is Scorpio in my other username. Actually, Larry Holmes knocked Green out in 2 rounds not 1 that you stated, but it was a short night on the undercard of the Muhammad Ali vs. Chuck Wepner fight.
Sorry Sir, Floyd fighting 18 years after the 52 Olympics. He was so done. The nut job scared me and was before my time. Gil Clancy, I never thought all that much of him. I thought he was way overrated and that his partner Howie Albert was overly.....cool.
Again I cant say enough good things of Rich's documentary style. Perfect amount of boxing action, fused with life story telling. Outstanding work
Agreed. The best of the best anywhere.
It's so goddamn good, this is my favorite boxing channel
@@Vitaly3548seconded, my favorite too, I watch an odd one here and there, but I think I’ve seen nearly every single upload from Rich.
Thanks very much, Fred.

every boxer's biography encapsulates a world within a world like a fractal... thanks again Rich.
I’m still waiting for Rich to do one on me.
Same here but I guess I better start getting some fights@@KOKINGWAYNE

Johnny Bratton has no docs on RUclips. He was one of Ali's favorite welterweights.
They had some good ass cocaine in the 70s and 80s, LOL.
All these docs are great. Hope one day we have one on smokin Bert cooper
Thanks, I'll do one on Smoking' Bert eventually.

So many stories of guy's great in the ring but suck at life ?

and its even worse now with the open border policy of biden!!
Great work, Rich ❤
Thank you, William
Thanks Rich.
You bet!
Helluva story right here.
Thanks for the video ❤
Sure thing, John.
His summation of Patterson was the same as Howard Cosell's.
Between Green, Cosell and Patterson there were two Heavyweight Championships won. Neither Green nor Cosell sniffed either of them.

Rich you need to be working for ESPN or the History Channel!!! 🥊💥
haha, we'll see.
espn is a political woke channel! LOL!!!!
Excellent video.
3:28 Green should have been disqualified.
He is probably the dirtiest fighter that I have actually seen color-footage of.

Floyd Patterson had a good heart.

18 years after the Olympics, Rich.
What's this in reference to, Pedro?

It’s such a shame that taxpayers have to support the lives of felons for so long.
Str8 up!
A life well lived.
Thanks Rich for another enjoyable blast from the past. We are responsible for ourselves.
