Obviously I wasn't born yet but all I've seen from it are photos and films in black and white, in quality of that time and people seeking finding space to stay "safe" on top of their house. Of course to be noticed by air and getting proper help, but it must have been equally, kind of, before, when they were inside and things were building up. Of course a hurricane and a stormsurge are not the same thing but they both are extreme weather conditions that can potentionally take many lives. It took around 1800 in this area which is one of the lesser populated areas of the country but I know UK was heavily affected by it as well.
