  • As voted by our online community, here are five of the best racehorses to sport owner Derrick Smith's famous purple and white silks, with all horses trained by master Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien.
5 - Globetrotting stayer Highland Reel claimed seven Group Ones throughout his career, with victories at Sha Tin (2 x Hong Kong Vase), Ascot Racecourse (King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes & Prince of Wales's Stakes), Epsom (Coronation Cup), Santa Anita (Breeders' Cup Turf), and Arlington Park (Secretariat Stakes).
4 - Champion racemare Minding collected seven G1s during her racing career, featuring success in the Moyglare Stud Stakes, Dubai Fillies' Mile, 1000 Guineas, Epsom Oaks, Pretty Polly Stakes, Nassau Stakes and Queen Elizabeth Stakes II Stakes.
3 - Star middle-distance galloper St Nicholas Abbey allowed Joseph O'Brien (18-years-old) to become the youngest jockey to ever win a Breeders' Cup race, when winning the 2011 Breeders' Cup Turf at Churchill Downs. Among his G1 haul, he also boasts wins in the Racing Post Trophy, Dubai Sheema Classic and three Coronation Cups.
2 - By Galileo out of exceptional mare Ouija Board, Australia claimed one of the English Classics, the Epsom Derby and Irish Derby as a three-year-old. He also went on to win the Juddmonte International Stakes in the same season. He now stands at Coolmore Stud in Ireland.
1 - Prior to transferring to Ireland with Aidan O'Brien, So You Think (High Chaparral x Triassic) was trained in Australia by legendary conditioner Bart Cummings, a 12-time Melbourne Cup winner.
Under the tutelage of Cummings, So You Think won two Cox Plates at Moonee Valley, an Underwood Stakes at Caulfield, a Caulfield Stakes, one Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington and he also ran third in the 2010 Melbourne Cup behind French stayer Americain.
Whilst under the care of O'Brien, he travelled the world and ran in some of the richest races on offer (Dubai World Cup, Prix De L'Arc De Triomphe and the Breeders' Cup Classic).
Despite failing to fire in those races, So You Think achieved international G1 success in the Coral-Eclipse, 2 x Tattersalls Gold Cups, Irish Champion Stakes and the Prince of Wales's Stakes.
What does your list look like?

My favorite Coolmore horse for many a moon too. Like you said, tough as nails and almost always brought his A game whether running at home in Ireland or jetting off to America for the Secretariat Stakes & Breeders Cup Turf or to Sha Tin for the Hong Kong Vase. He was one of those horses that you actually had to beat to win a race.

Rock of Gibraltar, he set a record for 7 consecutive group 1s which held for 10 years until it was broken by Frankel. Also Galileo, Hawk Wing, Giants Causeway, High Chaparral were better than Highland Reel, St Nic and probably Australia too.

Giant's Causeway wasn't the best but was definitely my favourite, he wouldn't let another horse pass. They only beat him when they overtook him about 10 yards from the line and he hadn't the time to respond.

Don't mean to spoil the discussion but I think the point is being missed. The text says the vote was for horses trained by AOB that ran in Derek Smiths colours. Of all those mentioned this would include SNA, Camelot and Excelebration, the rest don't qualify. So it's just a matter of opinion if any of those three are superior to any on the list of five. Personally I don't have a strong preference, I think they were all pretty good.

Interesting they went with Ryan Moore's ride in the King George on Highland Reel for this video. The blueprint that Moore started in that race, stealing ground on the field when and where he could was improved upon markedly by Seamie Heffernan in Highland Reel's Breeders Cup Turf win. Granted, Ascot's a much tougher racetrack, but lest we forget, Highland Reel was drawn and broke widest of 12 in beating a multiple G1 winner and 2-time Arc runner-up behind Treve & Golden Horn in Flintshire in 2nd, a previous Arc winner & Breeders Cup Turf winner in stablemate Found in 3rd, and finishing 4th was the Sir Michael Stoute trained Ulysses who upon his return to the UK set about winning the G1 Coral-Eclipse & G1 Juddmonte International Stakes. Highland Reel didn't just beat these horses, he beat them whole, absolutely blowing their doors off when Heffernan came cruising off the final turn into the stretch that day at Santa Anita, and he was actually being eased by Heffernan with the wire looming. Incredible the way he had to be hurried out of the starting gate breaking that wide to get to the front in that race and still dominate the entire race in the manner he did from go to woe. Once Heffernan got to lead out of the gate, that was where Highland Reel was always most comfortable and at his best taking on the competition..........on the front end!

For some, So You Think should not be regarded as AOB's horse. Firstly, the horse had already been the champion at home, while AOB had nth to do with by then. Secondly, this national treasure of Australia should have been kept at home instead of being sold elsewhere and facing many uncertainties and mistreatments, which made him eventually never show his true might and utmost.

Take that with a grain of salt Mike.
He said that after So You Thinks last race when he was heading back down under to commence a stud career.
How does running in the Arc, Champion and Breeders Cup have anything to do with Cummings?
I don't understand the relevance of that in the context of the discussion.

    • @diggermcginty870
      @diggermcginty870 4 года назад

@@elgransenor1472 How many other horses has O'Brien admitted to making mistakes with and called their previous trainer, as confirmed by Cummings, in order to promote their stud career? Big wraps yes, mistakes not so much.
The schedule of races relates to the mistake. It was a mistake to ask the horse to compete in those races in that timeframe. It also shows that much of his success was on ability. He was not masterfully trained, what he did achieve had little to do with O'Brien.
If Enable was sent to Australia to race for the next two seasons does she become 90% Australian and could we fairly say that Gosden had little to do with the development of the horse?

Didn't Cummings run him in the Cox Plate, Mackinnon and Melbourne Cup in the space of 11 days?

How many other horses has OBrien taken on from overseas trainers?
Hardly any I suspect. So the questions irrelevant.
