    I did it in a different way:
    1000 = 5 x 5 x 5 x 2 x 2 x 2
    [x + 1/x ]² = [3^1/2]²
    x² + 2 + 1/x² = 3
    x² + 1/x² = 1
    [x² + 1/x² ]² = 1²
    x^4 + 2 + 1/x^4 = 1
    x^4 + 1/x^4 = -1
    [x^4 + 1/x^4]² = (-1)²
    x^8 + 2 + 1/x^8 = 1
    x^8 + 1/x^8 = -1
    [x^8 + 1/x^8]^5 = (-1)^5
    as (a + b)^5 = a^5 + b^5 + 5ab(a³ + b³) + 10a²b²(a + b):
    x^40 + 1/x^40 + 5(x^40)(1/x^40)[x^24 + 1/x^24] + 10(x^16)(1/x^16)[x^8 + 1/x^8] = -1
    x^40 + 1/x^40 + 5(1)[x^24 + 1/x^24] + 10(1)[-1] = -1 (I)
    [x^8 + 1/x^8]³ = (-1)³
    x^24 + 1/x^24 + 3(x^8)(1/x^8)[x^8 + 1/x^8] = -1
    x^24 + 1/x^24 + 3(1)[-1] = -1
