Congratulations on passing!!! This vlog was so fascinating! I am not a professional musician myself, but I am such a fan of classical music and absolutely love getting a peek behind the scenes! You are such an inspiration to me ! Thank you:)
Congrats lovely!! On Affirmations - We actually end up lying to ourselves every day - when we say "i'm a failure" its just as much a "lie" as "i'm amazing" in terms of neither being a "FACT" when countering those Automatic Thoughts - so if we're going to lie to ourselves, I might as well pick the thoughts which help us feel better! [Said from my background with a MSc in Neuroscience - not just some woo]
This was great! I’m not a musician but I found your process fascinating. Plus, this is lots of helpful advice for preparing for job interviews, speeches, presentations, etc...
Congratulations! As a singer, there were some pieces that didn’t suit my vocal style. It was hard to accept that while I could certainly perform the piece, it might not still suit me. Auditions are killer. Prep work is so so important.
I don't play an instrument, but I found this absolutely fascinating! I'd love more music content if you find space for it. I know I loved your old performance vlogs and the discussion of your dissertation in the lead up to submission!
I love this intersection of beauty and classical music on your channel! I’m an oboist and it’s so refreshing to see this content in my feed! Good luck with both trials 🎻
This is such a lovely vlog. I was a musician a long time ago now (flute) and I wish I had some of these tips way back then! I am starting to practice again for my own fulfillment and I plan on trying to incorporate some of those technical tips. Thank you for sharing!
You’re so welcome!! I find having really clear technical tools to deconstruct music with actually makes practice more fun too, because you really hear progress and that in itself is super motivating to keep showing up :) Happy Practicing xx
I wanted and was working towards becoming a cellist when I was younger but a hand injury in my mid teens ended that and this music content is giving me life! Can live vicariously (I’m one happily in another career in my mid 20s 😂) xx
Arna, I really really enjoyed this video. As a non musician, I still feel like I learned a lot from your practice methodologies and could apply them to my job as well. Also, it’s quite interesting to see more insights of/learn more about a musician’s life ❤️
Well done! Thanks so much for sharing how you prepare for auditions, including such great self care routines. I’m very good at negative self talk and have just recently tried turning those internal thoughts around to be positive. I’m still faking it to make it but it’s a start. 😉
I love your advice about turning your nervousness into excitement! My theatre director gave me that advice in high school and it has changed my attitude about public speaking and nervous activities in general!
Shared with many students and teacher friends, it’s created so many wonderful talking points about practice and the audition process! Thank you for this!!
I loved this! I also love how you broke down your practice elements; Bowing from fingerings, etc. I played the viola in high school and college and am trying to work practicing back into my routine just for fun. Thanks for sharing!
I’m not a musician but I really enjoyed this. So interesting and fascinating to see your process. I feel like this is a great guide for how to achieve excellence in any skill. Thank you for all this great stuff! 🙏🏻❤️
The moment you spoke about listening to how different orchestra’s play a specific piece of music. I was nodding my head, as I prefer to listen to specific versions of my favourite pieces, so I understood that there is actually a difference!
This was really interesting. Thank you for posting it. I played the flute when I was younger, but stopped around college. I would like to get back into it, so I don't forget how to play.
I love all the technical stuff you mentioned Arna! I did piano up until grade 9 Royal Conservatory and then taught for about 8 years but violin was always a bit of a struggle for me 🤣
This makes me want to play the violin again. I played from the age of 6 to 23, but then just stopped playing, for no particular reason.. I was never super talented, I started playing mostly because my dad wanted me to. But I did enjoy it, especially when I was good enough to play the things I wanted to play (a lot of Irish folk music towards the end). I’m 39 now and haven’t touched my violin in about 16 years, I doubt I could even hold the bow correctly now! 😂
I remember using rosen on my bow. My cousin was staying with us at the time, I'm going back years and he was at least ten years older than me, from Auckland... He would grab my violin and try to play it as a guitar. Obviously teasing but it did upset me. I wish I had continued but maybe the passion wasn't really there. When I worked in London you could sometimes here the philharmonica orchestra in the morning rehearse in the basement at the London Palladium. People in the street would stop and clap at the end 👏 My favourite film/show of all time is 'fiddler on the roof' I only recently found out is was called that because it was very precarious to balance on a roof and play a fiddle! - if you've never seen it, please promise me you will, one day.
Hello Arna. It reminded me my old life when auditionning to orcestras or quartet contracts in Quebec city in Canada. . I was reading the partitions that I did not know just before going to bed and my brain was assimilating more during my sleep and felt it was quicker for me to learn new parts. Thanks again for the video.
What a great video, Arna! It's super informative - especially for someone like me, who's not involved in playing any musical instruments. I've always been curious how a musician prepares for the auditions though. Thanks for sharing!
OMG I recognised so much of my own preparations in this video! (Classical singer) Theory and brakes are equally as important as the actual physical practice, preach! 👏 I've been waiting for a video like this for years, please do more of this type of content💞 -if you feel like doing so obviously. Huge congratulations on the TWO potential positions! ✨🤩🥳🥰 Those are achievements I hope you are proud of! You'll nail it! 💪 I'm so happy for you! 💕
I have always wondered about all this information. When I go see a concert I love seeing what the ladies in the orchestra are wearing and wonder about their lives etc. As well as enjoy the evening of course
This is very interesting. Surprised how difficult it is. Highly competitive. 😲! You are very talented I am sure. I wish you all the best of luck. You are amazing 💖😙!! Keep crushing it!!
Such an interesting view of audition preparation. I’ve never had a job where this is required so very informative. Always great to hear you playing your violin. Congratulations for making it to the next step! 🎉🍾
Congratulations on the audition! Love to hear you practice! I found this very interesting. I play around with guitar and a keyboard but that's about it.
I loved this!! I’m no longer pursuing classical music professionally and have chosen a completely different career now, but I still love learning and practising new pieces
I truly loved this video I hope you’ll be able to do more of these, I’m not a musician or anything close but it is amazing to see this kind of content. Congratulations! You are really talented 🤍
I am currently preparing for my junior voice recital in my undergrad, and I’m losing my mind😅 this was so inspiring and comforting thank you so so so much! 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻❤️❤️❤️
This was really interesting. There was so many similarities to how you prepare in the lead up to a high level sports competition. Not falling into the trap of practising all day, getting sleep, self care, focusing on energy dense healthy and relaxed meals, planning out everything outside your matches to avoid decision fatigue when you need you brain the most. I have always struggled with music, but seeing these similarities makes me feel very connected to your playing. Thank you for sharing your preparation with us!
Thank you!! Yes lots of similarities, but sadly we don’t really get taught this stuff in our formal music education. I wish it was part of a Bachelor’s degree
i loved watching this video! it brings me back to my younger years when i was immersed in classical and orchestral music. the Don Juan excerpt really got me reminiscing! so glad you passed the audition, exciting things to come!
Congratulations! Wow I have an even greater appreciation for what you do and the immense amount of technical and mental work that goes behind it. Your sound was incredible in this video 😍
This was so very interesting, Arna. Seeing the behind the scenes gives people an idea of all the hard work that goes into being a musician and artist. Thank you for sharing xxoo
I am a lawyer and trials are not dissimilar to the audition apart from the creative artistic aspect! I have picked up Many of your suggestions including practice and visualisation to chill out with the public speaking part of my role.
Oh my I need to practice 😂 I never have to deal with auditions or anything, but I like to keep up my playing ability at least a little...but I just have not been doing it lately. I can rehair bows, carve bridges, touch up varnish, and replace bass bars for hours and hours on end absolutely no problem, but I just don’t have the patience for practicing my playing for some reason. I will figure it out one day.
Loved this! I was always terrified during auditions and never was really taught how to prepare. I am not currently auditioning (I’m an amateur flutist), but if I am ever in that situation, I am going to pull this up and watch it again. Many congratulations!!! ❤️
This was such a wonderful video, as a musician in college currently, it is so nice to watch a video like this and hear these tips, I’m excited to use some of them! Congratulations as well, best of luck in the future!!!
So true with the resting! I played trumpet when I was younger, and I was a great second chair due to purposely NOT overdoing it. I wasn't trying to really make anything of it, plus I had braces 😂 I do miss it, but my bite having changed rather ruined it for me. I will always love hearing your violin!! ❤️👌
5 minutes in... almost every other sentence is going over my head! Can you tell I know nothing about music?? Haha! This was really fascinating to watch Arna. The older I grow the more I realize every profession is unique, special and hard in its own way. Thank you for sharing.
Just finished watching and was very impressed with the tips you gave. As someone just discovering my more creative side, I agree that you can’t just keep giving and need to fill your “creative well” to keep going! Your tips I feel are very useful for just about everyone or even someone preparing for job interview/exams. Congrats and keeping my finger crossed for your final trial!
Thank you Arna for doing this video....I enjoyed it very much! I enjoy all your videos but I am a musician (non classical) and the little teases you give about that side of your life make me want more like this this! Maybe some info on the violin and bow and gear you use!
😍 I heart some Strauss. I am not sure if you know or remember but we played Don Juan together with the University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra back in 2018. Funny because I am also doing an Audition for harp very soon and have to prepare Don Juan as well. 😊
I extra love when you bust out your violin for a video! Random question though: do you have any hearing loss, or difference in hearing between the ear that sits closest to the strings and the other one? (I want to say left ear but maybe right if your camera is mirrored)
Glad to hear you enjoy it :) I actually have a little hearing loss in the ear further away from my instrument 😅 but that’s from a whole childhood of inner ear infections just in my right ear. The hearing in my left ear is likely a touch affected now from music now, but I need to get tested again! I will often wear earplugs when playing loud music at orchestra!
You have a good point...thank you for the info. I personally think that the violin sounds better in person than on the phone. But that is the phone not the performer. I still enjoy listening to you play. That is what people tell me that I make things more complicated than they really are. My heavenly Father does his love for me thru my playing. It is so spiritually comforting
I was never in orchestra or band but this was so interesting and fun. I always wanted to play the violin but I’ve never even picked one up. I think they are such a beautiful sound. I did used to play the piano and was always in choir (1st soprano). I did not prepare this much for my voice final in college. This preparation was fun to watch, interesting, and I felt I got a mini private concert. 😄 You are so talented! I hope you get the job. You were certainly prepared. Thank you for sharing this! 💕
Also thank you for talking about how 8 hours a day of practice isn’t the right thing to do cause it makes you burn out. I find the same thing with law school right now. I’m so grateful I teach because it gives my brain a break from law and cases and all that heavy stuff! Your brain can only do so much of one thing so long haha.
Love your videos! Think you would enjoy the doc "Music From The Inside Out". Fascinating behind the scenes of a professional orchestra and its members.
The weirdest part about doing a live professional audition is: You aren't going to be even 60% ready, even when you think you have your excerpt 100% in a practice setting. When you have to play against your nerves, even the least overwhelming excerpt becomes the hardest excerpt.
I’ve always played piano/keys but in school I was the president of the band (I played low brass) and these pieces of music bring me back so much to the years studying them! question: is it difficult for you and Alex to practice in the same house? I’m sure sometimes you have to practice during the same time period.
@@ArnaAlayneMorton True I realized I haven't seen much of your house in NZ, house living must be muuuch easier for y'all! Though that apartment in Melbourne was adorable I must say!
I love your music vlogs. One of my favorites was your concert day vlog a long time ago. Gosh, I can’t imagine the pressure of auditioning. This coming from someone who could barely play in front of parents at a childhood piano recital. If you don’t mind my asking, is there compensation for the trial period if you don’t end up being selected? That seems like a lot of time invested.
This was very interesting to get to know what you go through for an audition, I learned so much. Thank you for showing us your process before you you have that audition. I have to ask where did you get that gorgeous Anthurium crystallinum cushion? It is just to die for, it would suit me comfy chair in my jungle corner 😍. Stay healthy, safe and sane with lots of love from Melbourne ❤️😊
Thanks lovely!! It’s from this shop: www.greenphilosophy.co/products/anthurium-clarinervium-leaf-throw-plush-pillow They sent it to me in PR, and while I do love it, be aware they have terrible shipping costs to our part of the world 😩😩
Congratulations on passing the audition!!! The other candidate might be talented also but I’m sure you’re much more fun to look at beautiful girl 😄❤️. I was a professional dancer in my teens and 20s and I LOVED auditioning! I’m tall, 5’ 9”, so I didn’t book a ton of gigs but I had quite the life :). Married now, in my 30s, 3 kids and bad knees 🤣 but I wouldn’t trade those years for the world.
As someone who is very much in the amateur musician group it’s still really interesting. Structuring practice time especially. Some nights I don’t even get half an hour spare. It’s so tempting to run through the stuff you know rather than working on something technical I’m trying to get right. I am going to categorize my practice better now.
As someone who works in classical music, I think content like this is really great to educate folks on the life of those of us in the arts.
Yay glad you think so xx
When I was in rehab a few years ago for drug addiction, positive affirmations was a huge part of our day! I still do them 2 years sober!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 congrats on the big achievement!
Thank you!! It’s been very hard but rewarding!
Congrats on getting through that! 👏👏👏👏
Proud of you!!
Thanks everyone!
Congratulations on passing!!! This vlog was so fascinating! I am not a professional musician myself, but I am such a fan of classical music and absolutely love getting a peek behind the scenes! You are such an inspiration to me ! Thank you:)
Thank you so much!! 🥰 glad you enjoyed it x
I'm in absolute awe of your talent.
🥰🥰 thank you!!
Music is the only genre that brings everyone together like one big melting pot - thank you 😘

Nice!! Thank you for sharing your professional expertise 😍 glad I was on the right track!
This was great! I’m not a musician but I found your process fascinating. Plus, this is lots of helpful advice for preparing for job interviews, speeches, presentations, etc...
Oh absolutely!! An audition is just a job interview really haha so many of the same skills apply 🥰 especially on the mental prep side of things!
Randomly, I love your leaf pillow! Suits you and your space so well. ☺️
Haha it’s cute eh!! The plant type it’s modelled off is very expensive in NZ, so at least I can have the pillow version 🤣
Congratulations! As a singer, there were some pieces that didn’t suit my vocal style. It was hard to accept that while I could certainly perform the piece, it might not still suit me. Auditions are killer. Prep work is so so important.

aw that photo of mr morton and his horn is so cute haha! you’re so excellent at violin Arna, I could listen to it forever.
It’s a lovely profile pic eh!! Thank you xx
I love this intersection of beauty and classical music on your channel! I’m an oboist and it’s so refreshing to see this content in my feed! Good luck with both trials 🎻

These tips are so helpful all around! ❤️
Also it’s such a joy to heard you preform
Thank you!!

I’m not a musician but I really enjoyed this. So interesting and fascinating to see your process. I feel like this is a great guide for how to achieve excellence in any skill. Thank you for all this great stuff! 🙏🏻❤️
Honestly a lot of your prep tips are things that have helped me when I was preparing for a big exam in school and in my professional life as well!

This was so neat! Love any and all musician life content you want to share!

This was so enjoyable as someone who played violin as a kid/ teenager. It makes me want to get it back out again!
Ahhhh I have never been able or considered for a principal chaired violinist! Girl amazing!!
You’ll get there 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 keep working! You got this x
This makes me want to play the violin again. I played from the age of 6 to 23, but then just stopped playing, for no particular reason.. I was never super talented, I started playing mostly because my dad wanted me to. Haha I think it’s like a bike, and you’d remember how quickly!
That Tchaikovsky piece is one of the most beautiful pieces ever composed and it was such a delight to hear you play parts of it! Thanks for sharing.
This is very interesting. Surprised how difficult it is. Highly competitive. 😲! You are very talented I am sure. I wish you all the best of luck. You are amazing 💖😙!! Keep crushing it!!
Oh yes the music industry is SO competitive!! There were so many amazing musicians who also auditioned but couldn’t progress 😔 so tough!
I admire your tenacity! 💓🦋

Thank you so much!! Xx
Really enjoyed this!
Glad to hear 🤗🤗
Loving this scripting technique, as a nonmusical person I sometimes do this in my personal life but I haven’t thought about it in a career context
Super helpful for important days or events!
Huzzah! Well done, Mrs’ 🖤💋 xx
Thank you!
Congratulations!!
Thanks so much, lovely!! 💕
Makes me miss playing my viola!
I love watching your musical related content!
🥰🥰 so glad!! Xx
Congratulations, Arna!
Your trill in the Mozart concerto...🤌🏻 Was it number 4?
🥰🥰 thank you!! It’s the 5th concerto 😘
Ooh, that Strauss is rockin!
Haha thanks lovely!
Great insight. I sent a link to this video to all my music teacher friends.
Wow thank you so much!! That’s super helpful 🙏🏻🥰
Absolutely! Variety is the spice of life 👌🏻
Love your videos!
I loved this ✨🎻
@arna alayne could you list the excerpts you played in this video?
I’ve always played piano/keys but in school I was the president of the band (I played low brass) and these pieces of music bring me back so much to the years studying them! question: is it difficult for you and Alex to practice in the same house? I’m sure sometimes you have to practice during the same time period.
It was in our apartments haha but now in this house, there are enough rooms we can get away from each other and practice in peace 😅
Yes I’m paid for the role while on trial :)
I freakin’ LOVE these types of videos!!!!!
🥰🥰 yay glad to hear!!
It’s from this shop: www.greenphilosophy.co/products/anthurium-clarinervium-leaf-throw-plush-pillow
They sent it to me in PR, and while I do love it, be aware they have terrible shipping costs to our part of the world 😩😩
Congratulations on passing the audition!!!
Really interesting. I love music content.
Woohoo! Glad you enjoyed it :)
As someone who is very much in the amateur musician group it’s still really interesting. Structuring practice time especially. Some nights I don’t even get half an hour spare. It’s so tempting to run through the stuff you know rather than working on something technical I’m trying to get right. I am going to categorize my practice better now.
That is AMAZING to hear!! So glad you found something that you can take away from this video 🥰
You'd make a great music teacher also
Thank you! I have a small studio of students here in Christchurch that I love teaching 🥰
❤❤❤
