- "It's About to Explode" New Images Show Betelgeuse Has Dimmed All the Way Down and Very Unstable. On March 14, 2024, the American Association of Variable Star Observers announced that Betelgeuse, the nearest red supergiant star to Earth in the constellation Orion, has dimmed by approximately 0.5 magnitude since late January.
This star is known for its variability, so changes in brightness are not uncommon.
However, the current dimming has brought Betelgeuse to a dimmer state than it has been in for several years.
This raises the question of whether we might witness another Great Dimming event like the one observed in 2019-2020.
And when Betelgeuse goes supernova, will this pose a danger to Earth?

I just looked it up; a decrease of 0.5 magnitudes means the object's brightness has decreased by about 37% compared to its original brightness. Conversely, an increase of 0.5 magnitudes would make the object appear about 1.585 times brighter... in case anyone was wondering.
Been waiting for 45 years. 1st time my mom pointed out the belt, she said “that bright red one, it’s gonna blow” I’ve been asking the universe to make it “now” every time I looked up ever since.
I cannot wait,it’s gonna be awesome.
If it blows up today, you will have to live another 650 years to see it.
@@2A-Bear-Arms FALSE!!
By the scientific words "600 light years" or 600 Years to see the explosion, and KNOWING that:
->> If it Blow 600 Years ago THEN it can be seen TODAY
->> So NO!! -> as you See-> The explosion -> CAN Happen -> TODAY!!
So don't pretend that you "know" something AS YOU don't even try to search a tiny bit!!
Betelguese isn't in the belt... It's in his shoulder/arpit.
If it happens during daylight, you’ll miss it. 🤣
@@JohnMcMahon. If it hasn't already happened, you and your great grandchildren will have been dead and buried already and will never see it.
it's not just now exploding. if we're just now seeing it, it means it happened 642.5 years ago because that's how long it takes the light from Betelgeuse to reach us
My head hurts.
It’s because scientists are wrong! If it explodes in our lifetime, you will see it happening in real time. Do the math for the JWT getting to its orbit with a distance of 1.3 light years. How long did it take to get there and the speed it was traveling. You’ll be surprised. I already know, but I want you to do your own research.
The universe is a time machine, showing us the past.
And if that's the case, you got some charged particles trailing that light. Anyone notice the sun doing weird things lately...
Right, if we see it explode it exploded 642 years ago,
I'll be sad when Betelgeuse disappears from our sight. It's one of the stars which got me interested in astronomy as a child, and five decades later, I still look for it, along with Rigel, Bellatrix, and the Trapezoid, whenever the Winter sky is clear enough to do a little stargazing.
After Betelgeuse fades, Orion won't be the same. It'll be like looking at a necklace missing a pearl. Your eyes can't help but be drawn to the place where the missing jewel once was.
Later generations will miss out on seeing one of the brightest red stars in the sky. That will be a shame, no matter how spectacular the show, when we see Betelgeuse go supernova.
If I’m not mistaken, it will become a nebula
@@iiwikidoneii It will, but will probably not be visible to the naked eye after a few weeks. The telescopic imagery will be spectacular though!
But just think how many;do-left will become interested in this WHEN it explodes and we can see it with our naked eye.
Imagine you never heard of this. Now, imagine it was midnight, pitch black outside as normal, then in a split second it’s bright like a sunny day. You would freak tf out. Think about it 🫨
It's about to explode 642 years ago!
The thing is that it ALREADY likely went super NOVA because we are 600 LIGHT YEARS away from it so it may well have exploded 599 years ago (earth time) but we have not (yet) observed it due to the time it takes like (including explosions) for US
We might get advance warning by minutes or hours from the neutrino pulse that escapes the core while the rest of the star is still falling in.
A very close black hole in the making. Hope that its poles will not be pointing at our solar system.
Nope not a chance of a BH forming
small chance it has enough mass
We know it’s rotation. Poles are not pointing at us.
We are staring down the barrell of a few stars poles,it's just a matter of time
@@alripal9665 None big enough or close enough to be a concern any time within the next 10,000 years or so.
Hurry up and explode.... I'm old.
RIGHT?.?.?
it wont
Keep an eye out for T Coronae Borealis. It is likely to blow this summer, before September. It's not visible to the naked eye now, but it will be one of the brightest stars in the sky for a few days. It's near Arcturus, if that will help you find it.
The part about it boiling is amazing, it’s actually hard to comprehend, it’s frightening.
Such a fascinating subject. Yet you use a photo of a plasma lamp for your thumbnail?
This is definitely 💯 something to look 👀 forward to. To see a star 🌟 shine so bright in our skies. The SUPERNOVA would be so sky filling that we will see the star shine day & night. AMAZING. Peace ✌🏾
To be fair, that means it exploded 600 years ago and we're just now seeing it.
Good news?
Not if you are a species that is too close. We are 640 light years away, so we are safe. But some stars are significantly closer. Close enough to be dangerous? Not sure how close you need to be to be in danger, but maybe.
every night Orion comes up and Beterlgeuse looks the same size, color and brightness. they're really overhyping it. and the light we see left the star more than 600 years ago.
I SAW IT!!!!!!!!!!
It might happen anyday, 640 yrs ago.
It would be much more helpful if these videos would explain that the activity and behavior that BG is displaying now, today, was actually happening over 600 years ago! We do NOT know what's occurring on BG today, and it will not be visible for another 600-1000 years, assuming the distance estimates are correct.
And unless all these 'experts' can read tea leaves or tarot cards, they can only make a guess as to when the supernova will become visible on Earth.
If BG has not already exploded, not a single living creature on Earth right now will be around to see it... Sad, but true.
its zigzagging
so I can buy a new pair of shoes?
But is it safe to view through binoculars or backyard telescope?
Of course....When Betelguese finally does explode, we will soon know it, as ALL of the trees on earth will be blown over.
Dude he just said it could happen anytime. What are you talking about about with 1.000s of years
In historical records from around 1000 years ago, Betelgeuse was described as a bright *yellow* star, while it is very clearly red today.
If that is true, it would mean it probably won't explode for some time to come, because in that case it's only just begun its red giant phase, which might last for another 100,000 years or so. (Which is still a brief time in astronomical terms, but a long time span for us, of course).
About to explode, but also says 50 to 100 thousand years to basically prove a theory after exploding
It's not spinning fast, it's boiling
"This star wouldn't have exploded if I was President."... Donald Trump
Is he a narcissist? Absolutely! But the Facts are the we had no new wars under Trump. Most secured border and safe boarder in about 20 yrs. We were energy independent and a net exporter on energy for the first time since 1951. We had the cheapest gas prices in 12-14 yrs. We saw historic minority unemployment alongside historics employment, home ownership and the highest wage growth since under Clinton. We had a compounded inflation rate of 7.7% over those 4 yrs unlike the 20.5 % we've seen the last 3.5 yrs. Also as on January 2021 an American citizen needed a salary of $77,000 to afford the Average $375,000 home and as of March of 2024 you need a Salary of $103,000 to afford that same home.
I vote for Joe Biden unfortunately. I'd still need a Democrat for 23 yrs at that points. I was so ignorant and uneducated. I had this notion that if I watched CNN, MSNBC and some other Social Media commentators that I'd be factual informed. Turned out that I WAS AN ABSOLUTE BUFFOON! I was just a cultist NPC who hated everything Republican and everything Donald Trump and that I was a moderate and they were far right.
That could not have been further from the truth. The fact is Republicans are exactly what Democrats were in 2012. Republicans are now classical liberals. Very few conservatives exist. It was myself at my party who are the radicals. That should be clear as days considering that Democrats are using 1960s Mao, Castro, 1910's Marxist and fascist lawfare to destroy their political opposition and imprison him for things that aren't crimes and things and on top of that seek to seize his private assets and remove him from the ballot.
So You can let TRUMP live rent free in your mind like I did for over 7 years but one thing remains a fact .........
HIS PRESIDENCY WAS BETTER THAN JOE BIDEN AT EVERY METRIC & JOE BIDEN HAS THE LOWEST APPROVAL RATING THAN ANY PRESIDENT SINCE WE STARTED TO KEEP RECORD FOR LIKE 80 YRS NOW.
FACTS DON'T CARR BOUT'CHA FEELINGS
TRUMP/GABBARD 2024
PRIOR DEMOCRAT/ PRIOR DEMOCRAT will be voted for by me "Prior Democrat".
Gotta say, laughed out loud.
Hilarious 🤣🤣🤣

Serious question: How far behind the light is the Shockwave?
The shockwave travels a measly 67,100,000mph or so. About 10% the speed of light.
@dcquence sweet, it won't kill me.
Ahhh fuck. Of course, in this part of the world, orion is no longer visible. If it can only hold off until mid-October/November. 1:54 SN2014J
How close is this star to Voyager 2 ??????
It has already gone super nova but it just hasn’t reached us yet
You know this.. how?
@@Slo-ryde I listen to a few astrophysicists who all say the same thing. And they all hope to see it in our life time if we are lucky
@@Pigpen1202 "who all say the same thing." Hyperbole much?
The last few hours of a star's life is equivalent to a 8 to 9 thousand years.
Basically to scale down, what are the chances a virtual particle lives to see a human die?
The star could have died now or won't until the 24th century by a "real version" of a Jean Luc Picard/space faring species. It is likely we will be as dead as Napolean is right now. :D *Morbid Time* ;)
First Yellowstone is going to erupt. Now Betelguese is going to pop a bearing
They will...eventually, as sure as we're all going to die...someday.
@@rikk319 but I'm worried now! Haha 😄 🤣 😂
LEAVE IT ALONE!
It'll never explode while you're looking right at it.

Tomorrow or a Thousands Years, let me mark that on my calamder and start eating more healthy.
Astronomers have been saying this for a few decades. Still hasn't happened.
*it takes a few decades for it to go supernova when its like that*
Yeah, way to miss the point. You spose intergalactic space is on some kind of timer? Or maybe it’s just holding things in until it can piss off science. Yeah. How anthropocentric.
@@MrRichmiles You're saying I missed the point of the video title claiming "it's about to explode"? My point was, don't hold your breath, they've been saying this for a long time.
Besides, 99% of the predictions astronomers make are wrong. They're not scientific prophets for sure.
@@ronaldkemp3952 my point is, “it’s about to explode” is not the same as “it’s gonna explode tomorrow, or next week or in a few years. “About to” can mean 400 years, or far more. You missed the point that the universe doesn’t run on “human time.” Also, that it’s distinctly possible that Betelgeuse has ALREADY exploded, but the light will take a very long time to reach Earth. The fact that astronomers have been “saying this for a few decades” doesn’t make them wrong. Your observation of it makes you look pretty provincial, tho.

When it goes, all eyes should turn to Sirius to determine when the shock wave hits it. That will give us a little warning of when we need to kiss our backsides goodbye :-)
Won’t have the slightest effect on Earth apart from being a glorious sight
@@davidmcc8727 i think you miss the point. We will see the light but the shock wave will take a little longer to reach us. Observing Sirius will give us at least 4 years warning of what is to come after the light show.

It is shinning like the sun right now. Hey we might have just witnessed the birth of a new Sun. Or not.
My major concern is that the radiation output from Betelgeuse could be much higher than astronomers predicted even at the estimated distance from our Sun. That could be of huge concern if that initial radiation hitting the Earth contains a lot gamma rays, which could have a negative effect of life on Earth.
Love how these videos are trying to sound super smart and explain what’s going on with this star, yet they can’t even say its name properly…
