Hi Marco, Thank you for this great video. I live in the city of Medan, and I'm happy for you to explore our city by yourself. I want to explain some of the things that happened in your video. 1. The woman in the blue shirt says "Be careful", she is reminding and praying for you to be safe during your exploration trip, considering the high level of violence in this city, she sincerely prays for you, who are obviously tourists, to stay safe. 2. The street you are exploring, actually you entered the wrong alley, and it leads to residents' housing, that's why it looks empty, because residents are doing their activities at that time. 3. The man and couple riding the motorbike are as you said, he reminded you about your personal belongings, Medan city has quite a high rate of pickpocketing, robbery, mugging, there are people who do this in groups, that's why he reminded you to be careful, even during the day , these elements took action, you know. 4. The street where you meet children with umbrellas, and the same children you give money to, is a dead/closed street because of the construction/repair of the railroad tracks. When you meet children like that, if you are moved to give them money, you should give it a small amount, for example 5 thousand rupiah, because if you give it with that amount, the person who received the money won't even give it to the other children. (FYI when you want to give the money he claims to be their "chief", and he deserves to be appreciated -this kind of things happened here, Medan also called "town of thousand chiefs"-) and this bad problem extends to children too, because they feel it is a common thing to do. 5. The lady that you gave 20K notes, she was joking to you, she don't really mean to have those notes, in Medan if we meet friends, partners, family, we always say "share your money/baleninlah menaing “treat us", this is kind of joke to express we are thankful you have been successful, same like the man who asked for the cigarette, some asked for money, some asked for cigars, some asked for food/drinks. They don't really mean it to take your money away. 6. The green vegetable that is being chopped into pieces, which you said is shaped like a avocado, and the texture of an apple is Chayote vegetable, and it is very common in Indonesia. The fried food is called Bakwan, and it is made from a mixture of cabbage, carrots and flour and other spices and deep fried those. 7. At the café where you were offered the drink, when someone showed you the surfing video, he was telling you where he came from, namely Nias Island, and that is an area where surfing tournaments are often held, if you like surfing, this could be your next destination. Nias Island directly faces the Indian Ocean, so the waves are very good for surfing. 8. The elder Lady who gave you the drink felt happy with your presence, so she served the drink for you, this is the culture in Indonesia, when someone visits and they are happy with your presence, you will be given food and drink, that's why she doesn't want to accepted your intention to pay for your drink, and everyone there said "it's free for you". This is Indonesia buddy, that’s why I said earlier, the lady you gave 20K did not have any intention to take your money away. I hope you understand what I’m trying to explain here buddy. 9. When you take the motorbike rickshaw (Bentor), the price he gave may be a little more expensive, that's actually the usual situation in the city of Medan (maybe the same thing happens in other staes as well), You should bargain with the driver until the price is mutually agreed upon, but because you don't know this, the price is IDR 30k (USD 2), probably 5k more expensive than it should be. but I appreciate that you don't mind that. Thank you for supporting this type of transportation, which has fewer and fewer users these days, due to the Online Transportation. 10. The drink you bought from the hawker, believe me he didn't deliberately raise the price for tourists like you. If you buy at Indomaret/Alfamart at that train station you will also get the same price, bro. He gave the right price for you bro. you even exceeded IDR 1K for that man. Thank you for your kindness. 11. Train tickets that you want to buy but can't, this is most likely due to a misunderstanding between you and the ticket officer. I didn't see you give up your ID in the video. because she asked for your identity, just before you handed over the IDR 10K to her. but I don't know for sure, because it's not taped in the video, because it immediately cuts off and she returns your money. Trains in the city of Medan, because they are still public transportation that connects between cities, are not yet daily transportation like in big cities in general, so they are still very tight, like boarding a plane. Your data is really needed even to buy a train ticket which is only 10 minutes away, and even for IDR 5K train fare. Forgive our city, where people are not yet fully able and understand how to communicate in English, but Indonesia is improving towards globalization. Hope you are not disappointed with Medan City. My sincere advice for your next trip wherever you go in Indonesia, is that you can use Google Translate to communicate with local people, and almost from Sabang to Merauke, Indonesian people are friendly and easy to smile, but still be careful, because there are lots of unscrupulous people. Irresponsible individuals are also roaming around. If you have the intention to communicate further, we can exchange social media, bro, reach me anytime, ask me anything if you or your other friends want to go on an excursion around Medan, North Sumatra and several other areas. I will be happy to help you buddy. none other than for the progress of tourism in our area, because currently there are many solo tourists who need friends to communicate with, at least look for the right information before coming to this area. @effendywaruwu

The first time I gave money to a bunch of kids (5 or 6 of them) another 30-40 turned up out of nowhere....I had to hold my hands over my pockets as their hands where everywhere...then they just scattered......a police car turned up......saved me from losing my wallet, my phone, etc... things can go bad really quick, and no one will be on your side in those backstreets. Content is good but don't carry everything on you e.g., leave credit card back at hotel etc. so at least you have access to money if you lose your wallet. Personally, I would not have drunk from a bottle that I did not see opened.....I have spent too much time in Asia and therefore are too cautious...lol

I have a Jakarta friend visiting my hometown, Medan. He wondered and asked me, "Why houses in Medan are like jails? They are more like cages not houses". I answered, "We have houses like that in order to survive the night". Well, it is not as dangerous these days than the past. My parents survived 1965 massacre, those days were bad... like real bad... I think the tragedy made my parents' generation still being paranoid. That's the reason why most houses are like cages.
I couldn't keep watching beyond half way. I'm in Medan, and I can say that by handing out money everywhere you go you just encourage begging. If you are genuine about helping, there are charity groups you can channel your money through. In regards to the food being good because it's "fresh" cooked, the cooking itself doesn't clear up the high levels of bacteria from chicken etc left laying around for many hours in the heat.
Saw one guy on RUclips that was bum Rushed from behind with full force running to knock the wind out of him and steal his phone. I think he threw his corn dog and gave him his food instead.
I think the tiket that you wanted to buy was an intercity train ticket from Medan to Deli Serdang (Bandar Khalifah Station) and the standard procedure is for you to show your ID or Passport when buying the ticket..and perhaps because of the language barrier, the process became hard where you were even asked to go upstairs? (to her boss? Who may be able to better communicate with you?)...Did you try to use google translate with her?...As you well have noticed by now the Indonesians' command of English outside of Bali have significantly deteriorated..😢. ..

small children in Medan have been corrupted because of their liking for gangsters, one of the famous gangsters is RNR,, in Medan it is very famous, for example the small child at 04:29 mentions the word RNR.
Mr. Marco - Dennis - age 80. you really need a guide - boy, girl, doesn't matter - just someone who speaks English to" follow you around. I'm too old to do what you are doing and couldn't put up with " no one " speaking even a little English. The boy with the money if he can run fast enough will have it all.
Haha I really hope he shared it out! If he shared it out fairly it’s equivalent of each kid being able to get a little bit of food and a drink. I hope he did
I doubt it really, they were all fighting too hard for the money to feel generous unless they were friends. Years ago in our resort there were 7 or 8 kids around me, I offered the oldest boy money if he would share - big yes - I gave a 100 pesos which surprised them all, off they ran. I kind of think my money got shared at least a little bit, my group of kids were friends.
That building at the beginning was not exactly just a hotel. It was more like a brothel. Closed during Covid I think. I wouldn’t say that it’s in the best part of town, but I don’t think that any part of Medan is exactly dangerous- during day time anyway. Medan in my opinion is an unpleasant charmless place. I actually dislike it quite a lot. But you can walk around the poorest parts of town and you are very unlikely to be robbed - at least during the day. There is a lot of petty gangsterism and extortion/ protection rackets and policing seems inadequate/ not particularly effective.. I could go on.. but basically not something for the average tourist to be over concerned about.
There are many lessons we can learn, in this video, you give 100 thousand to children, and you get free soft drinks even if it is 8000 Rupiah, maybe this is God's way to help people in need, but you shouldn't give small children bro.
Cheers man! What is the reason to not help the small children? I just thought it would be nice for them to all go down to the shop and get some treats or something they may not usually get 😌
@@marcoroamsLater they will get into the habit of asking, it's really strange to ask someone you don't know for money. It's good for you to help people who really need it. That's all friend, the rest I salute you, be friendly to anyone you meet, even if they don't speak the language.

You can help them by purchasing things from them but giving them money and causing chaos to the people???? Okay mate. Not a fortune teller and never knew there would be chaos. But as you saw in the video, I did not cut in a specified scene where I stopped to give money, it was literally part of a video where I filmed for something like 5 minutes non stop, I show what happens where it happens. Hi Marco, Thank you for this great video.
I live in the city of Medan, and I'm happy for you to explore our city by yourself.

Their habit of asking for money seems to be second nature to them.
In some places yeah! But it wasn’t that common there to be honest
If they asked and you don’t give there won’t be any troubles
I think the tiket that you wanted to buy was an intercity train ticket from Medan to Deli Serdang (Bandar Khalifah Station) and the standard procedure is for you to show your ID or Passport when buying the ticket..and perhaps because of the language barrier, the process became hard where you were even asked to go upstairs? (to her boss? Who may be able to better communicate with you?)...Did you try to use google translate with her?...As you well have noticed by now the Indonesians' command of English outside of Bali have significantly deteriorated..😢.
..
Haha nah I didn’t try … I just go about what I do and try my best and see how the video pans out 😂 … she was nice anyway!
Thanks for watching
@@marcoroams it's always a hoot watching your video🙂...stay safe and healthy!.....best to heed locals' warnings...they obviously know their neighborhoods better....😟

Do not hurt yourself for video content? I know u need content but don't kill yourself
Nah nah I’ll be all good! Thank you 🙏🏽
Those people seem nice but damn that is pretty grim
💥💯
Why are you showing dangerous areas? Not worth it for getting rob
For you
@marcoroams but I am not interested to see a vlogger getting mugged, killed or robbed mate. So take care of yourself.
4:28 kid gave you the finger

Lived in Medan for most of my life and even i wanna move out.
Hey Marco, those vegetables the guys were cutting up looks like chayote. It has alot of health benefits, just wanted to point that out. Love your videos and stay safe.
Ahh thank you! I have never heard of it!
Thanks for tuning in 🙏🏽
@@marcoroams yes it's Chayote also called Choko, something like a bitter gourd. You'll find them in the Philippines too, probably all over Asia if you look. It tastes a bit like Zucchini when cooked but in my opinion nicer.
Hopefully you will be back here in Philippines
I’m thinking about it!!
@@marcoroams god bless bro
I laughed so hard at your face expression at the end of the video at “Indian night” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

@marcoroams Personally, I would have told her to get nicked You're way too kind I love watching your videos mate keep up the good work legend
@@crossfade3036 yeah she kinda put me on the spot man, but looking back I should have kept it for someone who “actually” needed it….
Watching back she was doing the Beyoncé Diva dance cause she was getting money 😂 …
But honesty, it’s all good man, whatever…. Just going to be a bit more mindful in the future
Thank you!! ✌🏼😁
Hahahaha. Ticket lady "badusldusoopaba" ...reply "yeah badoduspalaoavada please"

That bigger lady was so rude 😡
A lot of ppl from these type of places think Australians or people from the UK or even fewer from the US I have endless amounts of money and that’s not the case at all!!! A lot of struggle too 😢
Yeah that’s what I said to her, I said I’m glad you’ve got a job and food because so many people have nothing and I’d rather use to help them.

small children in Medan have been corrupted because of their liking for gangsters, one of the famous gangsters is RNR,, in Medan it is very famous, for example the small child at 04:29 mentions the word RNR.
Yeah it happens! I went down that path to at the age of 14 … it’s just how it is.
I grew out of it within 6 months or so 😂
Selamat in Indonesia = Congratulation
You can also say good morning and so on
In Philipine = Thanks
Seemed like that lady was offering herself for 100 but for 20 only her older friend 😅. She has standards haha
😂😂😂
Thanks!
I love your content Marco... please be careful and keep safe.
Thank you so much I really appreciate that! 🙏🏽
Mr. Marco - Dennis - age 80. you really need a guide - boy, girl, doesn't matter - just someone who
speaks English to" follow you around. I'm too old to do what you are doing and couldn't put up with
" no one " speaking even a little English. The boy with the money if he can run fast enough will have it all.
Haha I really hope he shared it out!
If he shared it out fairly it’s equivalent of each kid being able to get a little bit of food and a drink. I hope he did
I doubt it really, they were all fighting too hard for
the money to feel generous unless they were friends. Years ago in our resort there were 7 or 8 kids around me, I offered the oldest boy money if he would share - big yes - I gave a 100 pesos which surprised them all, off they ran. I kind of think my money got shared at least a little bit, my group of kids were friends.
Too many chickito bars in that river
in yesterday's video it said Swedish and now it says Australian 😁
lol what video?!
Medan, gotham city indonesia.. 😂😂
Bahaha epic ending
😁😁😁
Haha I was looking for this comment 😂🎉
Yeah I agree! They were all lovely to me, I was told it was Gothem City
7 days and no video.
I'm not sure how I can handle this!!
Hahaha it is up!
I apologise, I am on a remote island with terrible internet
You can go buy motorcycle and go to java sumatra road and go yo small city and villages like the lost boy did😂
Brand new bike are 500 USD , like Honda Yamaha matic😂😂
Watching from ♥️🇵🇭
Thank you for following my journey 🙌🏽
Chokos that's what they were cutting up I think
Nias is a surf spot.
Indonesian does not speak much English , so Most People will not Understand what you are saying, that does not mean they are rude , but they are shy because they do not speak English
Love your *hit. Be you. Be real
✌🏼❤️
see what happens ends up into no man clappen
@keretaapikita pls train your locket officer about basic hospitality and customer service manner. What a shame 🤬

Welcome to Gotham city 😅
Lol always asking money from a tourist.. 😂 Medan is a Gotham City.. Careful Bro..
gila malu sdm di Indo

Been following your videos for a while, just don’t understand why you keep giving money to the people. You can help them by purchasing things from them but giving them money and causing chaos to the people???? Maybe it’s not much for you but is that the way you try to get more likes by showing your “generosity”?
Okay mate. Not a fortune teller and never knew there would be chaos. But as you saw in the video, I did not cut in a specified scene where I stopped to give money, it was literally part of a video where I filmed for something like 5 minutes non stop, I show what happens where it happens. I give money on and off camera…
I don’t know what else you want me to say 🤷🏽
Thank you for watching
It’s not only this video you showing your money around mate
@@docttss4003 damned if I do damned if I don’t mate,
Don’t be so quick to judge until you understand what it takes to be a RUclipsr travelling to poor communities.
Give money and food 20 times off camera VS 1 time in a video and then someone always has to put in their 2 cents. (Like your comment)
The thing is I get given donations all the time and I like to show my viewers and donors that I actually help people out it’s what’s given to me.
You have a better idea? Please let me know
Your first few videos were purely you being you, but you have shifted your main purpose or goal being a travel RUclipsr! It’s my feeling and opinion about how I feel your changes and moving away from your initial goal. But it’s up to you to accept or continue what you still think you are right
All good buddy! That statement isn’t exactly accurate, but hey it’s all good I don’t need to explain myself.
I would like to understand from your perspective is “what was my initial main purpose”?
If you like my stuff, keep watching, if you don’t like the variety that is also fine. Plenty of great channels out there ✌🏼
I love travelling with a local companion I give them the smaller cash and they pay trycycles.snacks and tips gets the local prices and no confusion
