I am 4 weeks since my L4 L5 spinal surgery. Laminectomy done by surgeon in Philadelphia. My experience so far, positive. I have taken no painkillers. I have discomfort sometimes and fatigue. I am 63 years old and I can walk without pain. I hope you get better and will not have to continue taking pills.

Hi Mark I am 8 weeks post op from level 3 fusion L3-SI. I have been on morphine off that. Oxy still on and Lyrica off that. My back doesn’t hurt but my fingertips are numb and my legs , shins and feet , feel like I have been walking for miles before I’ve taken a step. I know it’s nerve but hoping that subsides. I have spent more time in the hospital and ERs than I care to count. My back was all but collapsed at time of surgery but like you I don’t like taking Meds all the time. I can’t take a lot of the nerve meds because they cause you to retain fluid and that was a living hell and so far none have worked . People say patience, I think I lost mine. It’s hard not to get down but hearing your not alone helps so thank you!

I looked at your videos in the lead up to my L4-L5 fusion and laminectomy last December. That was my second operation in two years. The first being just a laminectomy that didn't work. I also had about 8 epidural injections, before and in between the two surgeries. While it's been discouraging to hear of your post-op problems, I went ahead with the second operation after weighing the risks against the potential benefits. So far, I've been quite happy with the result.
I got out of the hospital on the second day, mostly because my urine and bowel function came back quickly. (I never used the morphine pump, nor any opioid pills.)
I know many others have experienced problems or disappointment after their surgery, but I don't want everyone to think this operation never works. So far, it's been great for me. I'm not saying that I'm 100% without pain. However, that usually involved me pushing too much during my recovery.
I hope things work out for you and everyone else facing problems.

Geez Mark - sounds like you been really through the mill. I just want to say that - the message you are putting out there is very powerful. It has made it very easy for me to make up my mind to not have surgery. So in that respect you have done me a great service - Thank you. I was under pressure to have surgery last year and didn't - thank God. I have a spondy grade 2 but have managed to go to a Ju jitsu class and even do a round or two of boxing. I can't walk more than 1000 yards but I can do alot. Enough to make surgery unjustifiable - especially having seen your videos. Thank you again Mark.

I have followed your journey. I am 3 months post op from a ALIF ( stomach approach ) 2 levels at L4- S1 with cages. I have been pain free since I woke up in recovery. I had the nurses pull my pain meds pump when I was in the room, tylenol has been enough. I have never touched 1 narcotic pain med. I am literally so sad for all these stories of post op pain. I have zero. Best of luck.

Thanks so very much for your videos. You have helped me! I had a bi-lateral sacroiliac joint dysfunction fusion 6 weeks ago and, thus, I am still on the mend. My doctor prescribed me Oxycodone, too. I will taper off ASAP and use Tylenol. You have taught me much. I am so saddened that you have been going through a horrendous ordeal. It is my hope that you will update again. Certainly, I hope that your pain stops. I suggest seeing a new orthopedic surgeon/neurologist, Mark. Rooting for you!

20+ years of every type of therapy and pain management you can think of. My last stop was spinal fusion surgery. I’m feeling better, some soreness, nerve pain on both legs… kinda painful but my doctor said it will go away. I’m hoping soon though. Thanks for your help and good advice.

Thank you for sharing your story of recover. I have lower back pains that has altered my life. It was determine that the cause is my L5-S1 degenerated disc. I'm thinking of surgery as the conservative approach hasn't worked. I'm at a desperate mode, but after watching your videos, I may not want it now. I hope you get better and off all meds.

I will keep you in my prayers. I'm 55 so my children are grown so our lives are different & I'm a female.

When I was working as a caregiver I injured myself assisting a client of mine. I can some what relate to your pain. I've been on every kind of meds you can think of. Been depressed no longer able to do activities that I use to do. Its a bummer...
I have had the epidural (steroid) injection, that didn't work. So I had my ortho. to remove the bugle at the L5-S1. And now he is talking about me having a spinal fusion. I couldn't make up my mind on having it. I just want to have some relief across my lower back and the numbness and tingling down my right leg and foot.
After watching your video has given me a second thought of going further with the fusion. Good luck on continuing your recovery!

I had spinal fusion 2 years ago. Not everyone has all this trouble. I had a lot of pain after the surgery and had to go on pain meds. After 8 months I weaned myself off of them. I'm in good shape now. Except I have another vertebrae that's slipping and need another spinal fusion on another vertebrae. I have no doubt I'll do it again.

Sorry to hear about your continued pain. My wife is three weeks out from an L5-S1 fusion. She is doing great and without any pain. She is amazed at her outcomes so far. Surgery performed at Barrow Neuro Institute in Phoenix Az. ( not far from Vegas). Dr Nicholas Theodore, x military neurosurgeon, did her procedure. Highly recommend for second opinion.
Good luck and hope you can get some relief.

Mark, when a person is dealing with this type of thing, its so easy for them to just want to run, run, run and if its okay to say, it sounds a little like that is what you are doing. It's what I do. But I have had to learn to REST. The more you run, the more your nervous system goes into a fight or flight type response and I can see how it would be extremely difficult to get pain under control in that situation.
If you can, give yourself the space and permission to REST.

I haven't found one person who has stated that spinal fusion is a great option, as a matter if fact I've found the opposite. My neurosurgeon refuses to do the spinal fusion because he feels they are a waste of time for me - but I am in 7-10 pain scale daily, there is no real down time. I'm currently taking oxycodone morphine lyrica baclofen clonazepam for pain and

Hi, I am 24 months post op on May 29, 2015. As you stated this is a life changer. I am older than you and had exhausted all avenues for relief. Finally I woke one morning in November 2012 unable to walk due to excruiating pain. Had to be laid in the seat of SUV and taken to ER. Prior I had a total hip replacement in 2001. To speed forward as to what happened I had Anterior Lumbar interbody fusion multiple levels, laminectomy, posterior spinal fusion thoracic to plevis. My motion is limited and after looking at my images I am the official Cyborg Senior. Like you I tried to limit my usage of pain meds even breaking them in half. Just when I thought I would have 2 days pain free and regains some of my memory my body would wretch with pain all the way to my toenails(lol). Presently 3 days ago a long lost relative Sciatica decided to pay me a visit on the right side. The left side was the one previously led me to surgery. Being that my motion is limited do is exercising. Forgot to mention I suffer a heart attack 9 months after surgery while having an emergency gall bladder removal. I wont give in to a life of pain meds but will continue to search for alternative. Would I Do this again? Hmmm that is the question. Blessings stay strong

I had the full spinal fusion in 2008 and the pain is far worse now then before. I can tell it's gotten worse in the last 2 years and I need to have a secondary surgery to cut down some of the rod that pokes out of my right side next to my shoulder. It's caused major nerve damage at this point. I was at a 56 percent/degree curvature before and now at 11 percent. I'd really be careful having this surgery because for me, it made everything worse in terms of physical pain. I had no option but to do the surgery unfortunately. going to start physical therapy soon so hopefully that helps.

Mark I can feel your pain bro , mental / emotional pain is sometimes worse than physical. I have been avoiding a 3 level lumbar fusion for years. Used to run my commercial fish boat , race dirt bikes in the CA desert , sail etc.etc. all gone now. Have you tried the various types of Tens units available? (electric stimulation). What does your ortho say, any surgical options? Something wrong with your original surgery? I take norco (10 mg hydrocodone) and flexeril when I need it. Don't give up!

hello, I know you made this video back in 2013, but right now I am also 18 months post op L4/L5 spinal fusion. you mentioned having been on pain killers for quite awhile post surgery. Luckily I only needed very minimal pain meds for 4 months after surgery. don't get me wrong I still had pain, but I dealt with through homeopathic means. I have studied herbology and naturopathic medicine for about 20yrs. I have an excellent recipe for a cayenne pepper salve that is so simple to make and is amazingly effective for relieving pain. I also have done extensive research into the herb Wormwood. it has amazing topical pain relieving properties. I make a tincture from the wormwood and then add the tincture to a thick lotion base and apply it where ever and whenever I need it. it works within minutes, it keeps you pain free for several hours, its non addictive, has no adverse side effects (because its applied to the skin and not ingested, it won't harm any of your vital organs the way prescription pain relievers do. if anyone is interested in making cayenne salve, there are several videos on youtube that will show you how to make it. as for the wormwood tincture, i'll be happy to provide the recipe with in depth instructions for how to make it to any who is interested.but as for my physical condition at 18 months post op; I will get twinges of sciatic nerve pain if I move my body wrong such as not rolling over properly in bed or trying to sit up straight from a lying down position, or if I do something stupid such as go to the firing range with my adult son and fire 30 rounds of ammo in a hand gun and a bolt action rifle.........I was in bed with pain for 3 days after that. i do want to find out what exercises i can do to core strengthen that wont land me back on the operating table cause i bent a rod or worse- pulling a screw out of my spine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and welcomed.

I had spinal fusion surgery and it's been a nightmare I'm almost a year past the surgery and I still hurt everyday. The surgery was the worst decision I ever made in my life. I didn't do enough research because it was a traumatic injury and everything happens so fast I hope you get better but the truth of the matter is you're probably not going to and neither am I. I've been watching a lot of videos about people who have had surgeries under spine and I've yet to see one or someone is completely satisfied most are still under some level of pain. My surgery was a spinal fusion in my thoracic and my lumbar area I thought a lot of times of just dying. If you're in pain life isn't really worth living.

Mark, have you tried Neurontin (gabapentin)? It's not an opiate, but is given for nerve pain. It's also given for epilepsy, but it's the only pain med I take right now (pre-surgery). Ask your doc about it.

Man don't take anything for pain, you have to cure the pain with exercise, i had lumbar fusion about 6 years ago im in pain right now. Its not as bad as it used to be though dude you gotta realize it will always be there, surgery is to stop curve in spine getting worse. Do swimming, plank exercises, push ups, yoga it makes your core strong, stops most the pain, and makes you look better, feel confident (i was also addicted to heroin due to hating myself and pain after surgery BAD choice)

How do you feel a medical cannabis (marijuana)? I was really unsure about it. I smoked a little in high school and didn't know of the healing properties it possesses. Mark sweetheart, I'm so sorry about what you are going through. I am dealing with a severe lower back problem and surgery could be in my future.
I just wonder if you need to slow down a little. I truly know how hard it is to stop and not work out and to want to strengthen or stretch or, or, or. But if you don't mind a little feedback, it sounds like maybe you never really took the time to let your body/back heal from the assault of surgery. Maybe those nerves just need a rest.
    Take care.

I know your pain, bud. Fusion of the L4-5 in May 2013. 3 years later and I'm in 10 times worse pain than before the procedure. Anyone contemplating this surgery...DONT DO IT. It does not work. Makes you worse. Way for doctors to make a quick 100k excactly. In my case...because I went with the suboxone to get off the meds...I cant get back into pain mngt. because that gave me a history of addiction treatment. So i'm in this pain and unable to get any help at all. In fact, I do not even want to live anymore. It's that bad.

Hi Mark, I absolutely agree. I am now 13 months post op and the pain has never subsided. I would never recommend this op to anyone. The pain anyone is having now without the op is nothing compared to the pain you experience after this procedure. People who claim to feel better are liars. Stick with what you have and forget TLIF!!!!! Learn to manage the pain you have now rather than have a doctor butcher your back. Doctors will not tell you the truth unless they've had the procedure themselves!!! take it from me, I've had this procedure here in the UK through private health - IT DOES NOT WORK!!!!!!!!

Before you got the surgery what would you say your pain was from 1-10?

    • @treadbroker

I was constantly at a 5-6 everyday, all day. I started popping pills as soon as my feet hit the floor in the morning. I was absolutely miserable. today im about 3 years from my last fusion and feel like nothing ever happened. I would say my back is perfect now....I am able to do full squats and deadlifts with no pain at all. Sometimes I just cant believe it.

Have you ever tried Kratom it is a great pain reliever myself I would just take the meds if you can tolerate it but I understand I’ve been on pain meds for 18 years I’m looking at back surgery

this was a very long time ago. Had my last fusion in 2015 L4-S1. Never had a problem since. i feel great in the back dept.

@@treadbroker so you had to get another fusion if so was it due to more pressure of the disc above fusion? Also all thing being equal would you still have the fusions done?

    • @treadbroker
      @treadbroker  3 года назад

@@h20no63 yes so after my first fusion L4/L5 I was still in pain. 2 years went by...still in pain so a new Dr. said we could take the hardware out...that maybe that was causing the pain. Took it out...still in pain. 6 months later the original fusion broke and I had to redo it. I cant remember the exact reason but I had to do a 2 level fusion the second time around. During that they found a huge nerve being pinched. Once that was released it was a game changer and I healed up nicely. If you are considering this surgery all I can tell you is find a dr. who uses the latest technologies and make sure they dont want to do a 360 degree fusion. Ive heard really bad things about those

@@treadbroker never heard of a 360 but I will look into it thanks for your input yea I'm 3 years post laminectomy and putting off L1-L4 fusion . On and off the opioids etc. All the doctors I've have seen say you can really tell after 8 to 10 years how and if the fusion workes well . Big question is did you loose much motion? I still work and I'm terrified of that

Sorry man.Four failed spine surgeries cervical and lumbar ALL from WEIGHT TRAINING
I was like you Could not stop training. In Pgh.It hard to get pain pills from anyone. The DEA runs it all.
Why suffer?Get on methadone tablets.I did and was 70% pain free.
Give up barbells. Get neurontin for nerve pain. STOP ALL WORKOUTS!!! Do U want to wind up like me?

Peace of mind plus I take ambien to sleep. My pain management people have told me about other types of natural meds which include marijuana. Right now they have a thx pill that mimics marijuana on all levels but it's not available for back patients yet. I live in Maryland and am roughly. 30 minutes from DC where I could get medical marijuana but the only reviews I've heard are mixed. I don't want to be high all. Day but I want my quality of life
