I love this for the acoustic guitar at the front, the close-harmony vocals, and the sheer passion of the big, final, melancholic melody at 7’08”. I noticed Rick Beato picked up on that last point in his Top 20 Guitar Solo Outros • TOP 20 GUITAR SOLO OUT... where this is #17.
Anyone who wants to know a bit more about U.K.’s Debut Album could do a lot worse than trying The Music Aficionado website musicaficionad... where the author writes accurate and intelligent 'Quality articles about the golden age of music'.
In the article there, Allan Holdsworth claims "I had never played a completely overdubbed solo until I recorded with Bill Bruford a few years later. It’s so weird, so sterile. You know you feel like you’re outside. When a band plays together, everybody interacts. And that feels much better to me. If you make mistakes, they don’t feel so goofy as when you overdub and foul it up. It’s hard sometimes because I can get a mental block". I totally agree, which is why we tracked live. Allan was, however, perenially unhappy with his contribution and would frequently ask to scrap it and start again by overdubbing over what others had recorded. I'm happy to report that the big end melody on 'Nevermore', starting around 7'08", was tracked live - all at once and at the same time - and kept as is. #billbrufordsearthworks
the whole album is getting better year by year, I rate it as one of the true '70s masterpieces.
ABSOLUTELY!!! 👍👍 😉
Absolutely!!
At 15 or so - I had a $10 bill - burning a hole through my pocket I wanted or needed a new album or music. After nearly 2 hours of combing through dozens of albums... I was about to leave empty handed. But right before this/that... I came across this odd album with a view from outer space and 4 heads in the sky. Wow. I thought. This is different. Who are U.K.? So I looked into it - and Bill Bruford (Yes) immediately drew my attention but was not familiar with any one else and thought... Well .. why not? And reasoned that: Bill Bruford wouldn't be in a crappy band. Purchased. To this very day (60) now... This remains one of my all time favorite albums to date. RIP Allan and John and thanks for the memories. metaltomotown
That mid-section with that gentle pattern and Mr. Holdsworth and Mr. Jobson trading facemelters one after another on top of it is such a thing of beauty: simple in its foundations but served and embellished with technical wizardry at its best.
There's something highly melancholic when you listen to that, it gives me chills everytime. Can't explain why or how, but it evokes very specific images and emotions.
This combination of 4 amazing musicians was something else, really. Even though I really liked Danger Money, I regret this line up didn't live up to record another album: by that point, they turned into a three-piece band and simply something else, the Jazz Fusion feel had gone with Bill and Allan. I often console myself with the idea that Bill's One of a Kind is a U.K. 2, sort of...
Went to a Jethro Tull concert in Houston in 1979 and UK was the opening act. I already had this album so it was a great double show. Eddie Jobson stayed on and also performed with Jethro Tull.
In Baltimore I saw them open for Al DiMeola, many other places saw this double bill. It remains to this day my favorite two act set ever. An amazing night.
@@randysmith4331 I believe that was the gig for which a critic - for The Baltimore Sun perhaps? - mused incredulously, prior to the show, why a punk band would have been chosen to open for Al. The critic had confused U.K. and U.K. Squeeze.
@@charlesdemarco3063 haha it would have been the Baltimore Sun but I missed that review. If I had read it I would have definitely set him straight!
I saw the same show/lineup in Kansas City at Kemper Arena. I was 16. What a mindblower!
Eddie eventually played on Tull’s album A!
This song is right up there with Close to the Edge in terms of songs that define the genre of progressive rock. It's that good. Masterpiece!
Mr. Bruford is a phenomenon
Allan Holdsworth was one of the most extraordinary virtuosi on any instrument. His electric guitar sound from ca. 7:07 onwards is gigantic by any standards (and this recording is nearly 50 years old!), and the short, semi-improvised coda that he appends has an angularity and suppleness that no other guitarist of the time could have achieved.
Well put! Allan so far ahead of his time never compromised miss you RIP Maestro …….
It feels like Allan and Eddie are pulling the song apart in two different directions. It never really settles and never offers any comfort to the listener. Amazing!
My brother turned me on to this album in 78,its still one of my favorite all time prog Masterpieces
On my list UK was a supergroup. What an era, in company of Hatfield and the North, National Health, Soft Machine, Caravan..
Epic music with icons Allan Holdsworth and Eddy Jobson. New, fresh and clean sound in those days, timeless.
One of the best prog albums of all time.
Yes but this song has a Jazz Fusion feel to it
@@jskypercussion I don't disagree.
Bruford =tension and release...Holdsworth = otherworldly beauty. Thank you for introducing me to Allan Holdsworth and Annette Peacock ....two of the most obscure artists of our time...both so deserving of wider recognition.
Both Malmsteen and Petrucci are big fans of him. No popular recognition m, but certainly important. Also Van Halen
I can remember the first time I heard this album and 'blown away' doesn't begin to cover it. Every musician on this track is at the very top of their game, it is musical perfection.
My favorite UK song Bill. I saw you guys open for Al Di Meola in Sacramento August 1978.
Circles. Bill mentions Rick Beato in the description and Rick did a great interview with Al DiMeola recently. Perhaps Bill should get in touch with Rick to do an interview? Jon Anderson was another one of Rick's interviewees.
I saw the same double bill of U.K. opening for DiMeola in Baltimore. What an amazing night.
I heard Holdsworth for the first time when he was playing with Bruford. It was a revelation, there were no shortage of fusion players (dimeola, mclaughlin) or shredders (Van Halen, Rhoads, Roth) but Allan toped them all. The real paganini of guitar
I’m 61 and if I had a dime for every time I’ve played this gorgeous piece. In 1980, I bought two, large roto-toms and brought them to a welder who secured them to my bass drum and when I tried to play along to the record I imagined I was Bill smiling over at John, Allan and Eddie. This album was life-changing for me.👍👍
I’m 66 and a retired drummer, friend. I thought about getting roto-toms but I already had a 9 piece kit with as many cymbals as I could fit. There was no comfortable place for them. I was in a few bands but nothing where I could play my Bruford chops, so I just played almost every album he was on at home. That was great practice! Him and 70’s Collins.
@@randysmith4331 I can relate, friend, thx so much for sharing. I’m sure Bill hears many such stories when he meets fans like us.👍☮️
My favorite too! And Nevermore is one of my favorites among UK songs (well, I don't quite love Danger Money and Caesars palace blues but other than these two!!! Even Night after night and As long as you want me here). Love Allan-Eddie duel starting at 3:00!!!! Also love Bill and John's playing, just perfect!
An excellent stereo recording of Bill’s drumming. Headphones suggested listening.
Best song on the record ! Killer roto toms !
Such beautiful drumming on this masterpiece. I can really hear how you and Phil Collins must have influenced each other during Brand X and these times.
Love this! Allan changed my approach to music... and life. Continue to strive to be the best I can be in every facet. Thank you you #maestro, #AllanHoldsworth. ❤️
One of the best albums ever. Seriously
I saw UK in Pittsburgh in 1979 or 1980 at a relatively small music theater, and it was a thrilling and beautiful show. I did see Allan Holdsworth a few years later in Chicago which was also engaging, but the combination in UK was special.
Absolute Masterpiece. I had the Album, cassette and later the CD. Phenomenal musicians. oNe LoVe from NYC
It leaves me floored every time. Epic soundscape. Thank you, Mr. Bruford! You have made my life a better place.
incredibly beautiful music, beautiful harmonies, beautiful (swinging) groove and a fantastic sound! A milestone in music history.. ❤️
I have heard this album more than most, amazing every time I hear it ! Bruford's phrasing/drumming, the vocals...Holdsworth's screaming solo with Jobson , Holdsworth /Wetton notes together, Bruford's Roto Toms ! OMG !!! We were so lucky to be a part of this.
Peace from Detroit MI.
I feel bad admitting that I'd never listened to U.K. before today, but take heart: now I want to hear everything! This is an amazing performance by you and the entire band. I can see why you are so proud of it.
As much as I love this album and all the guys on it, This was a "one shot" deal. Truly lighting in a bottle. The line up changed for the second album and started heading off to "Asia" territory. However, I've been listening to this since it was first release and will continue till my end...a masterpiece!
Masterpiece in every sense; mood, groove, history, creativity and melodic explosions throughout the album.✨✨✨✨✨
Thanks for posting this tune along with you writeup, Bill!
Each member of UK, a master of their respective craft. Assembled, an amazing smorgasbord of music. Such feeling in the music, wonderful.
My favorite UK song. I like the live version from '11 or so from UK show in Japan.
The whole record is sensational and it's always my answer to the question which record influenced my youth the most. I always hesitate to call a title my favourite since there are so many I love but Nevermore will be always at the top range of my personal list. I feel so thankful for this music. 👍
Thanks for sharing that info about the end of Nevermore. If ever there was a perfect ending to a song... that was certainly one. Great artistry from all. Your drumming is excellent throughout. The hi-hat work kept the right kept the right subdivision feel exactly where needed. Your roto-tom work was excellent. No one else I've ever heard had used that instrument so effectively, IMO. And the way you break up the rhythm, in the end, along with Allan's solo, down to the cascading roto-tom fill, the hi-hat swell and the final kick and cymbal hit (like a rattlesnake bite), makes it all come passionately together. A stellar recording by one of a kind musicians.
Love way Allan, stetches time at end
Got the album loaded on my car playlist…addictive!!
Thanks, Bill!
Well Bill retired, but he is still sharing, greatful for the upload descriptions.
My God Bill, just a sumptuous piece of music in every sense of the word. Thank you for this reminder. ❤️🔥
This is the full best musical composition of this album.
And ALL this album is a MasterPiece of music... Human historical music of the world.
This the Best Progressive Jazz-rock Fusion album of the XXe Century.
Genesis, Yes, King Crimson... etc... are under under under low level than this huge beautiful excellent album.
That's it.
Amazing stuff. Loved what you guys created on that album!
A great band
One of the greatest compositions of all time!
I already have the album (along with Night After Night - Extended and my favorite by UK, Danger Money); I just came here to read your interesting behind-the-scenes info and commentary. Not disappointed.
These tunes cut too close. Childhood and discovery in a manner none such I've ever seen before or since. Thank you, Bill Buford for an elemental understanding.
Easily!!! What a stunning combination of talents. And, not a predictable continuance to the tracks.
Hauntingly amazing. This is Prog Rock but it is also Jazz Fusion
I was recording drums for our second album, when Paul Taylor came in the studio with this gem. I still didn’t know Bill Bruford, it all changed after listening to this album. I incorporated his style in my drumming, i think our third album ‘Off the Tracks’ shows some of that. Bill and the band were so talented. Thank you.
I don’t know you Mr. Bill Bruford, but feel like I do . Was only a few feet away in some Floridian auditorium, Hollywood Fla. it was. I read you went on in music. From the beginning, in the Yes band you’ve helped heal me many times, Be well
One thing I remember from seeing this lineup, they played The Only Thing She Needs which was on their second album Danger Money. Of course, it was a new song never heard before, but instantly I loved the staccato drums and bass that Bill and John did. Years later I got my hands on a bootleg cd of the very show that I saw, and when this song came on it was very different than the version on DM, especially the ending. I found myself wishing this crew could have done their own version of the second album.
This work continues to stand out for me as a masterpiece for lack of a better word. So many delightful melodies pervade the work, bringing the listener to multiple points of duende. It is truly a collaborative work where each musician brings out the best in each other to our delight. Thanks for sharing this.
The real super group 🙏Great music then and now
Bellísima Composición... Gracias Allan Holdsworth
I am of the opinion that before people begin to listen to this lustrous composition, they should see a piece of advice suggesting that they treat themselves to a listen through a pair of headphones. The piece is absolutely lovely and as many facets as possible should be drawn into one's mind.
Just a phenomenal piece of music, that most people have never heard. How sad.
Quite enjoyable! Thanks
Goosebumps*
Alan is a outstanding master on his instrument
Masterpiece!
Love it. Thank you.
Great song, great record!
Fabuloso...
This UK album was played a zillion times, before CD's !
Thanks BB for the “in” j’ai été hanté par cette finale dans mon adolescence, maintenant je comprends mieux.
You drumming is impecable
Fantastico!
This is and will forever be my favorite UK song
a jewel
It's perfect
Tout simplement magnifique 🇨🇦 Salut John! RIP
It is regrettable that most people haven't heard this, and never will. Still, there are people who do find their way to this, and other great albums, and that is to their credit. But, I have no sympathy for anyone who can listen to this, and not care for it. Especially someone who plays a musical instrument. It's hard to imagine a guitarist or drummer who doesn't know, or cares to know, the names Bruford or Holdsworth. They only hurt themselves.
I could listen to the ending of this for fifty years. Oops I'm almost there.
Que tema mas bello...
Merci Dan
The best ever
Epic!
Essa música se resume em uma palavra... LENDÁRIA!
Wonderful!
Brilliant.
I just got add at 3:25 for swifters. Come on!

Progressive Rock at its best.

Wetton lives.
Fantastic! My first , (and only), UK record, because of Bill Bruford's participatiion! Had heard of John Wetton, and became a fan of all the stellar musicians in this debut record's line-up. I remember driving in my car, listening to KSHE radio in St.Louis play the entire record, (before it was released), anyway, I pulled over into a local record shoo, and pre-ordered the album. Saw the band in support of that first U.S. tour play at a club called Mississippi Nights, (situated right on the riverffont of the famous river in STL. The band didn't even set up on the stage. They played on the floor, same level with the sold-out crowd. It was an amazing thing to see a band like that in such a setting. I'll never forget it.
My absolute number one pick if I was stranded on a deserted island...
Dig it!
That acoustic guitar intro alone is worth the price of the album and then some...
