Ey up me duck. Another one I particularly liked, I think because of the location which I really loved the look of for some reason. Yet again a very informative and enjoyable watch 👍🙂
Seems to have quite a lot of in depth history for such a small island. Many different ruins throughout the ages. The history of picts has always been a bit of a fascination for me along with Roman history. Tho it was only Roman like buildings here. Not much left of the Earl's Palace but certainly worth an explore along with its history. Great research and explore 👍I'd like to visit the island one day myself
A wonderful site at Birsay, it was super interesting to listen to the history from Pictish, Norse and beyond. The site is excellently excavated which made for such a cool visit. Thank you for that. Would love to visit there, the surrounding area looks wonderful too! Then onto Robert's Palace, loved the rich history that is entwined in the walls! Beautiful stone work and such an interesting ruin. Thank you Cara xx
It is amazing how civilisation waxes and wanes over the centuries. I wonder how long ago the island was separated from the mainland. Where the causeway is would have been a strip of land at one point in history. What were Robert's harsh and oppressive measures, Cara? Beautiful video and great narration. Thanks for sharing, Cara.
thanks, its a stunning place. The reports is it always been an island, but that is written records. As for Robert, it said he was a hard ruler of the land, but by how they don't say. what is mainly mentioned is he had many children, but only a few with his wife, and some of mothers were not consenting to the event. doesn't like a nice man.
thank you cara for another monday history time for me. i do look forward to them. one day maybe my schedule will let me get to one of your sunday premieres. have a great week! 🛴❤
Fascinating! Incredibly well preserved site. Wonderful to see the buildings and even a Viking Sauna! Thorfinn sounds an interesting character and it’s interesting how the Norse converted to Christianity around his time. But what a location. Such beauty Cara 😍😍 And then the Palace. That is a huge site also - would have looked so imposing in its day! The Earls of Orkney through the ages seemed to wield huge power and influence! Great stuff!
Hi Cara it was fabulous to see these ruins, the location is wonderful and I loved the Earls Palace, it looked very well preserved. This whole area is stunning . I'm sure you really enjoyed this visit ~ Anna
Hi Cara, what amazing location!s Both places were extensive and absolutely fascinating. I really enjoyed the tour of each and your very interesting narration. Thank you for bringing these places to life 😊👍
Hi Cara! This was so beautiful and I didn't realize there were palaces up at the Orkneys. It definitely looks like he had a lot of influence and power over the area. Great history and I loved your impressions of how it must have been back in the day - great imagery!
On the deserted island are the footings outlining the building foundations original or are they placed there to show the outlines of where the historical buildings once stood? I'm always fascinated by these old buildings, their straight lines, intricate details and large stones and left wondering how in the world did they build these massive structures??? At 14:37 is that a stone with a hole cut into it to form a little portal window?
What is there on the island is the remains of the original buildings. I find it odd to visit these places, knowing that many many years ago our ancestors lived there. As for the hole, I think it must have been some kind of window. Thanks for watching and your great comment
Two lovely places this week Cara, so much has been escavated WOW...so lucky to have you to take me to see this! The castle was an added extra this week...thank you Cara I feel so lucky to have found you to take me to these amazing places and giving me all this amazing history to go along with it...thank you so much!
Hi Cara What the beautiful storyteller, Cara! Massive historical site! quite long walking tour? hehe As listening to your voice-over..this film makes a whole.. The UK's history...no story without Viking, especially geographic character, surrounded by the sea No wonder the UK used to say having the great Navy.. Anyway, OMGoodness, the ruin is gorgeous to explore.. My eyes are glued to... You must enjoy exploring the rich heritage as I did. Outstanding film! I thank YOU. Are you monetized? or working on hrs. If so I can work on your playlist.Let me know...Cara
Loved this. Thank you for sharing, brought back lots of memories Thanks for all the info too, wish we had seen this before we visited. We visited here whilst we were in Orkney and had a fabulous time. We enjoyed our walk over to the island and the palace. Have a fabulous Bank Holiday weekend
I am ignorant re Scottish history! I did know that the old Scottish family the Sinclairs were hereditary earls of Orkney but obviously they lost their tenure!! Was the castle slighted by Cromwell? Did he venture that far North? I shall have to look this up. Thanks Cara!
I looked it up- Cromwell did take an army to Scotland & fought a major battle at Dunbar where the Scots were defeated. And then defeated Charles II at Worcester ( is that where Charles hid in an oak tree?)& where he had to escape to the South Coast. The castle apparently was in a bad state by the beginning of the 18C! Thanks Cara!
Interesting excavations in the remains of the palace 👍55
Thanks for coming

I don't think Cromwell came up this far. To be far i am learning alot about the Scottish history :-)
I looked it up- Cromwell did take an army to Scotland & fought a major battle at Dunbar where the Scots were defeated. @@dianarolph1770 thanks for this, learnt some new today. Thank you 🤩
Yes it was Worcester that he hide in a oak tree.
One of the explorers I find most interesting, John Rae (1813 - 1893), was an Orkneyman. 🧭
oh cool, i will have a look. Thanks you
