In my experience with both dooms ultra nightmares doom 2016 starts really hard but gets easier the stronger you get whereas doom eternals difficulty stays around the same from start to finish
That's exactly my experience with both games. Eternal also has you manage ammo and armor differently from 2016, which can make switching from one game to the other feel jarring.
I gotta disagree. I played it on Nightmare recently and I had to tone it down to Ultra Violence in Cultist Base and I ramped it back up in the level that followed. similar to 2016, I found Eternal to get easier as I got more weapon and suit upgrades. But the drop-off in (perceived) difficulty is not as sharp in Eternal, that I'd agree with.
I'd say I had an easier time dealing with nightmare on eternal I was actually doing pretty well when I tried nightmare on 2016 I got my ass handed to me 2016 just felt like the harder one to me do to not having as many get the fuck out of Dodge movement options

It hurts to say it, but it’s totally true. I think it comes with an over reliance on constant movement. Dashing, using the hook with the shotgun, pipes to swing on, etc. I couldn’t get used to the movement. Plus it seemed like I was constantly out of ammo.

DOOM 2016 is easier in the sense that it takes less skill to be good at, but Eternal is easier in the sense that the game is so solidly designed that once you get good at it, it's like taking a test you know every answer to.
Honestly, DOOM 2016 UN is the hardest after yoy mostly play Eternal because in Eternal you can dodge, gain everything more easily and the meathook unlike 2016 where the only "unique" movement is C R O U C H
But then the longer game would have more deaths assuming same difficulty... A better metric would be average deaths per minute but that just doesn't SOUND as interesting in terms of content
Eternal obviously harder. The game incourages precise movement. Every demons have strength and weakness so quick weapon switch is essential specially in nightmare difficulty and you have to quick switch weapons and shoot demon during fast and precise movement. In doom 2016, I didn't care about switching weapon after i got machine gun.

I've been told eternal is the same, it starts hard but as you get upgrades (and beat cultist base) it gets easier

For casual player like me Doom 2016 is much difficult but also much less fun.
Eternal was more difficult for me personally.
