i remember seeing this at a boa regional in Long Beach ca. Our band was blown away. They were at one time the best band in california. Sadly no band in california comes close to this in 2023. Must be some pretty horrible budget cuts in the arts because all of these california bands are fractions of what they once were. its really sad.
Some lore about this show: In BoA Grand Nationals, the set of Judges in Prelims, Judge Finals, and another set Judges Semi Finals. This is pertinent to the story. Ayala placed between 6th to 8th in Prelims among the judged categories. In Semis, Ayala placed again between 6th to 8th. Except one judge that placed them in 27th in downstairs visual. This knocked Ayala to 14th. Should Ayala had gotten into Finals, Ayala would have eclipsed their 2004 show, and should history play out exactly as is anyways, never touched that accolade again. The freshman of 04 would have accomplished two school historic events in that band program. 1st Finals in BoA Grand Nationals in school history and by my recollection the 1st California band to crack the top 8 echelon.
If you look at the difference in the 2019 show and the 2021 show, it’s kinda clear it’s not “horrible budget cuts.” The pandemic was the largest factor in why a lot of the bands in California are smaller than they were before. I can’t speak for much of the other bands, but speaking as a current marcher for Ayala, a considerable amount of the members left and not many people joined during 2020 because of it being switched online.
@@leeds2806 I do notice the quality is coming back! Btw no disrespect man. You are still in the best band california. Just want California bands to sound like drum corps again lol. We can’t let Texas and Indiana beat us anymore. Ca percussion is on point. Winds got to step up.
@@erroneous3493 Nah, you’re good just wanted to clarify why Cali bands are the way they are now sorry if I seemed passive aggressive. We’re still rebuilding but it’s nice being a smaller band relative to what we were before in some ways like being closer with members and different sections and even being able to do cooler drill that might be difficult to do with a large Texas band. As a wind player I can say our winds have been getting stronger too along with our colorguard and percussion so I’m pretty content with where we’re headed
This was my first year being a band instructor after I graduated a year before. John Meehan who wrote and teched Ayala’s band this year was also my coworker. He gathers us all together as staff and tells us to “Watch this” Blown away.
Coming back in 2024- still one of the greatest shows I’ve ever seen and I never went to Ayala
Till this day, this one of the best shows I’ve ever watched ❤️❤️
