I appreciate you calling this out, as it's the type of behavior that usually goes "right," but when it doesn't, the consequences are dire, even tragic. I was thinking of this yesterday while at my home resort, Sugar Bowl. Some of the World Cup teams here for the races at Palisades this weekend were at SB training. It was fun watching them and riding the lift with them. (I got to sit next to Loic Meilland, who kindly obliged for a chairlift selfie, which i totally blew by not hitting the right button!) Adjacent to the closed run where they were training is a green run. Sometimes some of the WC guys would ski down that run, fast, but no faster than any of the great skiers we see here in Tahoe, totally in control, off to the side away from other skiers. We all know they were fully capable of going much faster, yet displayed respectful behavior when around us amateurs.
I'm glad to hear you echoing my toughts watching the vid last week hahaha. He didnt have the right ski, didnt have the right stance, didnt have the right snow conditions, didnt have any safety measures... And doing this under the chairlift is asking to get your pass removed 😅 About the speed he went, us canadian have a fixation with the 100km/h (62mph) cause it usually is the speed limit on the highway (some places allow 110 tho).
Skiing at high speeds is the sole reason I always took the first bus to the ski resort where I grew up in my youth. There was nothing better than having the entire ski resort for yourself for an hour and a half, on freshly groomed slopes, where you could just rip it :) But I do agree...that guy in the video, didn't seem have the skill for higher speeds.
This is such a needed video. This is one of the most toxic behaviours I see on the mountain... Standing just below a knoll in the middle of the trail. There should be a rule against it. That said, I also 100% practice the "never ski over a blind spot ever" rule. Oddly, I've had this rule since I started skiing at 7... and never violate it. Even if I "Know" no one is below the knoll, I still face check the terrain before skiing the terrain. Zero assumption ever., 😊😊😊
Guys that do this share the same mentality as the motorcycle guys that speed and weave through traffic or do wheelies. It’s usually only a matter of time until their luck runs out, just hopefully nobody else gets caught up in the mess.
No matter what speed, always ski in control with the ability to quickly stop or avoid obstacles. This guy was out of control and a danger to himself and others. Most days I ski we see a guy like this and we call him (almost always a guy) "Big Ripper" (sarcastically of course).
From the content of clips that you showed Elliott I would think that Steep Steep audience is 12-14 year old boys. Carving is where it's at! My 19 year old daughter has finally embraced carving and her off trail skiing has greatly improved.
I found a downed tree on the side of a run on the blindside of a roller on a 2' powder day. The fact there were only a couple tracks over that way was the first thing that told me to slow down!
Amen on exercising caution on blind spots… my son and I broke our own rule a week ago and about creamed a snowboarder that was parked just over a crest. We were probably going in the low 40’s which is plenty fast to cause major damage!
We don't need the ski version of jackass. There was nothing interesting about that video. There's staff that over enforce with their pass pulling, but then you have dopes like this that deserve it
I avoid Greens and Blue's when skiing to avoid this type of person. My typical ski day, I ski around fewer than 30 people on trail, except at the lift scrums. 😊
No control? Get the F off the mountain. There are so many opportunities and ways to get speed but if you couldn’t turn to save yourself….SOMEONE ELSE??? Gtfo
I got into skiing because I love mountain adventure. Park kids got into skiing because they can skateboard on snow. It’s an interesting culture clash. Now that I’m an instructor I can tell a park skier right away. They ski with their legs pinned together and are usually in the back seat trying to look chill or something. Also the floppy clothes kind of give it away. You have to look the part to a be a member of the group I guess. Silly young people always seeking validation.
Noo man. Only the people on instagram and tiktok who say faction is the best are. Park is still my favourite type of skiing and i am a very good freeride skier and used to race sl and gs until last year. I can tell you, we all hate those kids who cant ski but are good at park and think they are the shit, litteraly got a guy from my class that used to flex he could backflip (not even land it). First year park and freeride rn and i have already learnt backies, kfed, 360, 540 and flat spin 360, litteraly did all his park rich kid progression (he even had a coach) for around 10 days. Being able to ski and loving the sport makes you so much better at park. I thought i would have sucked but now i am aiming for cork 7 and misty 5 (maybe even bigger tricks) in my second year! Good park skiers are good skiers.
Young park rats are so much more inclusive than they were back in the days. They always cheer me up when I finally acheive the trick I spend an hour to try (easy one compare to them). And I'm in the park with my race coach outfit, and I'm over 30. They are just young people expressing themselves thru skiing and I think its beautiful. Thats aside, a lot if them could learn carving and have an even better time on the mountain 😅
100% of the crashes I've had in the last 10 years have been on blue's/green's near choke points with out of control beginners plowing into me from behind. My typical speed through these points, 2 mph... It's the mountains fault. Choke points create crashes. End bliind trail convergences now! 😊
Thanks for pointing this out. I was just ranting about how skiers and snowboarders go way too fast when they have no idea how to stop, or are not in control, and put others at danger. Also, people go way too close to other skiers and boarders, leaving little to no room for error. If you’re going to go a little faster, please get as far away from other people as possible.
Can't stand steep steep. It's probably becuase I'm older and it's geared towards gen z but I find his personality to be so grating. Watching hin ski park isn't much better. I normally try to keep it positive but this dude annoys me.
Stats we could do without for the general public.. max downhill speed and total downhill vertical. Totally with you on not sending anything blind. There's plenty else to huck
Great comments.. I am pretty sure that I shared this already but I will do it again.. Early season when not much is open and it is all blue and green I ski very slow and give lots of space.. When they open up the expert peak I give her.. If you are not an expert, stay off.. You are the problem.. There is an area on BRECK (Peak 8 SuperConnect) that I will literally snowplow.. There are skiers/snowboarders with every ability level merging from every direction.. So just like you said.. Know the terrain..
10:15 Idk I snowboard. I absolutely love bombing to the point where aerodynamics come into play, where you want to slow down is to un-tuck or throw your hands out as air brakes. But he did show @ 10:15 it was all clear.. IDK if your confident in your abilities.. Go for it.. just don't go over blind spots or turns bombing...
I get it. Just understand that other people may have to turn very wide or may ski or snowboard in a different way than you. Since you’re in a public place, you need to be able to stay far away and leave plenty of space to avoid problems.
It has never been more true than ever around here in the PNW if you know what I mean. I'm Taiwanese, so f* the pro communists people who live in this free country, so not Chinese peep in general. You'll be surprised how many of them are still minions to the Communist Party.
This guys killing my nerves „I don’t hate them, how could I hate them“ but then proceeds to criticize every aspect of the video and the person without actually knowing the conditions, the ski resort, the person in the video and his skills

It sounds like it was a great week to be in Palisades! yeah this stuff is just reckless.

Oh that's funny haha, that makes sense
"IT wasn't fast, it was just dangerous." preach on sir! 🎉🎉
He got up to 68 mph. Any skiing at 50 mph or higher is fast in my book. And he was well above 50 mph.

Ski as free and fast as you like……just don’t make others pay for your choice.
Totally agree 👍

That's a good policy

Unfortunately it will take multiple life ending ski collisions to force policy change. And it will definitely happen, just a matter of time.

I avoid Greens and Blue's when skiing to avoid this type of person.

How scary is Killington, VT?
As a noob that is using consecutive days to learn various aspects of skiing, the only speed I enjoy is through the lift lines. :)

Paradise top to bottom, I helped host SG events there
@@RicketySkiReviews Aahh I didn’t even think bout the backside
You should review the black ops 98. One of my favorite skis I’ve ever skied on. It’s like a park ski for grown ups!

There had to be a better trail to do that on
Good points, very informative
Lol
Skidding at those speeds is terrifying.
agreed
