Agree with the reviews and scores, but HOW can you rate this one over the original and Silver Surfer? Yes, they were disappointing because they were mediocre and played too silly. But this movie is utterly BROKEN after Reed Richards leaves the secret base. In the first half, the only real problem was Ben Grimm utterly disappearing while Reed is at the Baxter. In the second half, NOTHING WORKS. I'll take Jessica Alba, CPT 'Merica, The Play-doh Thing, and Mr. Welsh vs Electro Doom over this POS any day.

Thomas Mays You make good points but i'd argue that the movie is rushed and put together poorly, but not broken. Every motivation is clearly defined. Although they are not fully developed characters at that point, I do believe that everything they do can be traced back to a reasonable conclusion. the movie is rushed, poorly edited, and occassionally stupid but never broken. Easy to follow and makes sense to the end.

    • @SaiyanHeretic
      @SaiyanHeretic 9 лет назад +2

Thomas Mays I, too, feel compelled to defend the honor of the old FF films. They're both embarrassingly campy, but the first one at least, is an infinitely more watchable film than "Fantfourstic." Michael Chiklis nails it as The Thing, Chris Evans brings some genuine charm and humor, and Kerry Washington is excellent, despite having only a small supporting role. Doctor Doom also more or less looks like himself: steel armor, green cloak, not so far off from his standard comic outfit. And those films both had Stan Lee cameos. Apparently, even Stan knew better than to show his face in this one.

    • @amaysingstories1
      @amaysingstories1 9 лет назад +1

Ian Smart I get your perspective, their motivations were presented, but only through awkward exposition and voice over. Nothing was earned. It's like we got the Cliff Notes version of a longer film in the second half. It reminded me of the rushed awkward crammed editing of The Last Airbender. And that, to me, is broken.

The way I take their comments is more of like a this movie aimed higher and missed whereas the others aimed very low and still kind of missed type thing and for the half of the movie that I (and a lot of the collider guys and the OP) think does some right I would say I agree, but it isn't winning by much and the others are probably a little more watchable because they are just silly fun.

I'm more in Mark's camp. I didn't hate the movie(although that is only because I read a LOT of reviews so I knew exactly what I was getting into), but there is NOTHING for me to recommend here. I'll give you that the first half is decent, but the problem is that the first half is setup, and that depends on the payoff, which was horrible in this film. The first half doesn't have much going on other than setup and basic introduction, so it's hard to for me to recommend seeing this film at all. You know a film is bad when they can make very talented actors look like amateurs. Seriously there were scenes where you can tell that the cast(Particularly Jordan and Teller) didn't care and were just there for the paycheck, but admittedly that pretty much comes from the second half, especially the last 10 or so minutes. There was no chemistry between the 4 leads, and a lot of that is because most of the time the 4 characters aren't even sharing screen time. By the time you get to the end and they become the "Fantastic Four" you can't help but feel incredibly awkward at their character interaction since it feels so forced. I'll actually say that the first 2 Fox FF movies are better for the sole reason that things actually happened in those movies and at least had a light, fun tone which made them semi-enjoyable even if they were bad movies. Sorry Schnepp, but I have to say Green Lantern is better than this garbage.
A big nitpick for me is the fact that The Thing isn't wearing pants(I know that sounds like an exaggerated fanboy reaction, but hear me out a little bit). It made me question certain parts of his physiology and psychology. He's clearly naked, but yet we see nothing to indicate that he's a male or that he is able to go to the restroom, so is that an intentional statement by the filmmakers that he doesn't need to go to the restroom? If that's so does he not need to eat? Does he even have the necessary equipment to procreate or just have sex in general? If that's the case how does he feel about that incapability? Sex is an important part of life(especially for young adults), so how does he feel about possibly not even having genitalia? What's the situation here? The brilliance of The Thing having pants is that it humanizes the character. The fact that he wears clothes shows that underneath that rocky exterior he's still the kind, loyal, blue-eyed Ben Grimm(plus it eliminates the physiological questions since we can assume that he's got genitalia), and the film missed out on that. Furthermore, since he's clearly naked does he not have a problem with walking around naked everywhere? It would be nice to explore his characterization to know these things, but we never get that chance. We have a guy who was just a normal kid who is being forced to be a weapon for the government, and that is something he didn't prepare or train for, so what are the psychological ramifications of those events. You can't just randomly take an 18 year old kid and tell them to go fight in wars without that having a serious effect on the kid. Especially when they're not allowed to socialize or just be a normal human being. So many missed opportunities with all of these characters, but especially with Ben.

me and Jon Schnepp are perfectly in sync on how we feel with this movie....I liked it until that one year later part....to add...I feel like Doom shouldnt have even been in this movie...not Victor...but Doom....I feel like the government should have been the enemy of the film....instead of Reed running away ...have him free everyone else and they all disappear ....then have the scene with Reed trying to build the new pod and the government using some other brainy nerd track him and they fight the entire 4 in the woods and then have Dr Storm stop the fight and ask them for help against a terroist plot or something and then they get left alone by the government and they take over the Baxter Building ...then show Doom like in a mid credits scene say ...Doom is coming ....I mean...let Doom be the 2nd movie villain...thats just my take....but maybe we all need to come to the conclusion that F4 may just not need to be a live action movie EVER

I think this was good in the sense that this puts FOX on the spot light, before the "1 year after" you see Trank's Fantastic 4, after that is what FOX did to ruin what could've been a great movie.
FOX must know they need to let directors do their job and stop imposing their terms once the prodution has begun, after this they shouldn't dare touch "Deadpool" or "X-Men" otherwise they'll begin drive away writers, actors, and directors for being impossible to work with, and follow the path of studios like "MgM" and go utterly bankrupt! and if they think that can't happen then they are the stubborn naïve fools everyone takes them for.
Now if FOX wants to rescue something out of this; not lose a great property, their image and risking their very capital for any future projects, they should bring back Josh Trank, Simon Kinberg and Jeremy Slater and let them have that “Directors Cut of the Fantastic 4” in the way they wanted the movie to be, for FOX now generates doubt and questionable capabilities as a major film studio. Let the audience (who they live from and are conscious of what they like and deserve) have that one vision for these characters.
That if they want to be the ones to continue this franchise and make it profitable, the studio must discus with the director and screen-writers what they would like in a sequel, agree on the terms and let Josh Trank do his thing, the opportunity is far too precious financially and artistically to let it pass, the smart thing to do is make amends and move for something better if not all they look forward as a studio are losses and be a shame for the industry because for the only one this is playing against is them.

Over the weekend, HitFix’s Donna Dickenssuggested an awesome idea where the Fantastic Four were alive and active in the 1960s of the MCU, giving them the opportunity to interact with folks like Hank Pym, Howard Stark and Peggy Carter. A mission gone wrong saw them lost in space, only to return in the modern MCU without missing a beat.
It’s an interesting way of staying true to the idea of Marvel’s FIRST Family, while also explaining why we haven’t seen them yet in the MCU. Plus, it connects the team with Iron Man and Cap in an immediate way, given their established relationship with Howard Stark and Peggy Carter.

I'll be honest. I liked the beginning too. Had the entire movie had a good pacing, maybe it would've been good. Or maybe if Fox just let Trank do his Job instead of taking over the editing and reshooting everything.
What killed it for me were the following:
    - Reed is disqualified from the competition for no good reason
    - Reed doesn't request that Ben be allowed to stay with him for that Baxter building thing, despite Ben having helped him get that far
    - It's out of character for Reed or Victor to get drunk. Pretty sure they only did that to explain why they would do something as stupid as going to that other dimension
    - They just completely let Ben into the building with the only justification being Reed says to them "He's with me"
    - Reed leaves for a year and with all his intelligence, can't find some way to send a message to his friends saying "hey, I'm trying to fix this. Try and keep the army off my back." Or at least, something along the lines of that. And don't say there was no way to do that. This asshole built a functioning teleportation device while he was in primary school. I'm certain he could do that.
    - Like stated in the video, Reed gives no explanation to Ben about what he's been doing the past year, even if it wouldn't have worked, he didn't even try
    - When they bring Reed back to the place, he and Johnny are supposedly bros because they got drunk together that one time.
    - Why did Doom want to destroy the Earth again? Out of character. Plus, if he just wanted to stay in that dimension, why did he let them take him back? Surely he had enough power to stop them from bringing him back
    - When Doom's fighting the Four, aside from apparently all tension being resolved in the group, Doom seems to be able to control their powers. 1. How the f*ck is he doing that? 2. Why didn't he immobilize them like that, then blow up their faces?
    - How did Doom survive in the other dimension? No food, no water or anything. Or is that just a part of his extremely vague powerset of:
    ~ Controlling other people's abilities
    ~ Blowing up people's faces
    ~ Opening Black Holes
~ Creating capes out of.. nothing
~ And apparently, being able to live without food, water, or breathable air
Damn. That was just me having a rough run-down of the movie based off the poor quality version I watched online a few days ago. I should work with CinemaSins.

Justice Suks Unless Fox "gives' the rights back(highly doubt Fox would do that) or if Marvel/Disney approach Fox to buy the rights back(I highly doubt Marvel would do that), the "soonest" FF4 will go back home to Marvel is about 7 years from now. As long as Fox never begins actual production of another FF4 film.

Jennifer Hamels I feel like if we can get one more of these where Josh Trank can make is vision with little interference, we might get a good fantastic four movie. (wild thought i know) I like the cast, the parts I liked felt very strong, and I want Everyone involved to be sucessful. If the movie tanks, it'll b for good reason, but if it is successful enough to garner a sequel, lets hope it'll be a good one. I mean look at the talent involved. Laws of probability has to let at least one of these things be good, right?!

According to the latest print issue of Entertainment Weekly (via Comic Book Movie), things were incredibly tense. Trank reportedly had issues forming a coherent vision for the film, producer Simon Kinberg was brought in to help, but Trank wasn’t happy with the changes they made and wrote another draft, which caused delays. Then the studio cut the budget by $30 million, down to $120 million, which Trank didn’t think was enough to fulfill his vision, scenes were removed, and decisions were taken out of his hands. All of this and more bubbled over during production. According to the article:

I got back from seeing the movie a little while ago. This movie was terrible.
    Positives:
-The first act was okay, had some promise
    -The acting was pretty good
    -The Thing looked really good
-The chemistry between Reed and Ben was good for a while
-The one scene where Doom was blowing people's heads up in the hallway
    Negatives:
-They RUINED Dr. Doom! He was both horrible and a waste of a villain!
-The plot was terrible and didn't make any sense
-There was no chemistry between any of the 'heroes'
-The CGI was awful aside from the Thing
    -Terrible dialogue
    -Poorly written
    -Poorly directed
    -Poorly edited
-Bad humor/jokes when it was supposed to be there
    -Missing scenes
    -The action was bad
-The third act/ending of the film is one of the worst I have seen in a long time
Overall I give this movie a 3/10. One of the worst films I have seen this year. Biggest disappointment of the year. I thought this movie was worse than the other 2 Fantastic Four movies that Fox did. Worst comic book movie I have seen since Ghost Rider 2.

Dennis said it best. I didn't care one bit about it being just another fun or funny superhero movie. I wanted it to do something different. The sci-fi/horror tone in the first half was pretty solid (the reactions to the powers and the Doom hallway scene were definitely the highlights), but then the movie suddenly became a generic superhero movie with an incoherently messy, awful finale. That last scene was cringe-worthy beyond belief too.

I don't think you can judge this Fantastic Four movie compared to the previous FF movies. Roger Corman's FF movie was made only because they had to in order to keep the rights to the franchise.
The two other films were created right as the tone of comic book movies was being changed by Christopher Nolan's dark and gritty, hyper-realistic approach.

Hey guys. I love your comments. I watched the Fantastic Four and although not a great movie, I thought it was good enough to not be the piece of turd you guys claim it to be. There are some very good points that you guys made that I agree with and some that I don't. I'll take a moment to combat some points I don't agree with.
    1. Not enough action? Yes, I could have use a little more action but I was not bother by the lack of action throughout the movie. I really enjoy the pace of story telling. Much like Chronicles. It was more about character development. There is something to say about a good movie with just good story telling and not action. (I'm not saying this is it, just that it was OK that it didn't have the action sequence everyone is asking for.)
    2. Why did the guard let in Ben Grimm? The reason the guards let Ben Grimm into the Baxter building was because Reed Richards vouched for him. Reed was the top scientist at the lab. I'm assume it took more than a year to put that transporter together and during that time the guards would have gotten to know Reed and the value he is to the project.
    3. How does Dr. Doom know he has power and can kill people with it? If you recall, Reed was looking at the monitor and notice the landscape has change. Reed was saying "it doesn't look the same"...something along that line. This was a hint that Victor was terraforming Planet Zero. Victor spent a year on the planet exploring his powers and changing the land. By the time he was rescue and brought back to Earth, he had master his powers. Thus, if Victor can move rocks and water, he can move boon and blood cause people to explode and die.
    4. Missing scenes that was in the trailer that wasn't in the movie - I can't believe you guys are bring up scenes that was in the trailer and not in the movie. I watch you guys did an episode on this a while back explaining this process and how many movie does this. This was a most asked about questions during the Amazing Spiderman 2 and you guys defended on why movies do this...(com' on guys!)
    5. Doom's custom is ridiculous - I thought the custom was fine. Its not going to win any awards but Doom's custom makes sense. Jon Schnepp made some good points to why it look the way it did and I agree.
    6. Third act, how Dennis can tell they were on set because it was how they mix the sound - In all honesty, unless you are in the field and work on sound checks everyday the majority of the populations can't tell the difference. I'm happy Dennis can (since he is good at his craft) but the 99.9% of the population don't care and can't tell the difference.
    7. Why does Doom want to destroy Earth? This was foreshadow in the first act. Victor express his hate on how humans are destroying the world. When the humans return to Planet Zero (which he fear they will) Vector felt like that was an attack on a world that he has created, terraforming. He didn't want humans invading and taking its resources and destroying what he had created in the process.
    8. At what point did they (the Fantastic Four) think it was OK to go to Planet Zero without their spacesuits? I think when they sent the monkey to Planet Zero without a spacesuit it confirm that it had breathable atmosphere. (My memory could be off and I could be wrong.)
    9. Lots of issues about the backstory about Sony and Trank - Honestly, I really don't care about any of the backstory issues. But by how you guys talk about the issues, it showed that it impacted your experience and expectation when watching the film. (I know that many of us can say that we leave that at the door, but as human beings there are a lot of subconsciousness thoughts that happens that affects our enjoyment.) I feel this was the case for you guys--Just my observation, may not be true.
As I watch you guys talk about the movie I notice that how heavily influence you are by the disagreements of Sony and Trank and how influence you are by each other. Really take a step back and ask yourself if you watch this by yourself without hearing how much the others didn't like the film, would you still feel the same way. From watching you guys I see that you all build off each other. A good movie becomes a great movie and a not so good movie becomes the worst movie.
I love they show and I enjoy your conversations. Keep up the good work team.

Bruce Yang im happy someone was able to like the movie, but, structuraly the movie was a mess, and that by itself, is a big problem, the dialogue and the amount of exposition was bland, and excessive...
but the thing is, " I thought it was good enough to not be the piece of turd you guys claim it to be. " that you are right, you thought it was good enough, but it doesnt mean others will, there are people out there that love batman & robin, and they can feel the same thing, they arent wrong, its taste and tolerance, ASM2 was a better structured movie, with not only a defined start middle and end, but also, with good parts in there, and schnepp, probably hated more than FF... there are others that are the oposite, they didnt like ASM2 but hated this one...
in the end, its like i said, you liked, good for you, but there are others that didnt, and right now, they seem to be the majority, its as simple as that. Who is right and who is wrong doesnt matter.

    • @bruce5476
      @bruce5476 9 лет назад

Marcos Danilo Thanks Marcos. I guess my point I was trying to making was the post itself. I see so much hate for this film, I feel that there needs a different voice to kind of give a balance to the subject.
I totally agree that FF is not perfect. But I disagree that its as bad as they make it. I would disagree that the major problem was structurally. I feel that the beats were fine. What was lacking for me was more developments of certain scenes which the Collider Crew allured to. But that is jut a difference of opinions. What may work for me may not work for you and vice versa.
One thing I do observe is that people seem to jump on the band wagon of FF hate. If someone is loud and animated and say that the movie is great. Other tend to agree or else they feel stupid for not seeing the finer points in the movie. The same is true when someone is shouting that something is bad. People are afraid to speak up if they like a movie since the loud and animated people are saying its bad. "How can you like that movie ...xxxx is so bad in acting, the custom didn't look like the comic book...blah blah blah.
Movie is subjective. Everyone is different. That the facts not an opinion. :)

I actually work at a movie theater, so they screened it for us, I got to see it, and yah, I probably agree the most with Mark, you guys said it all, it just completely derails after the middle where we dont get to see any character, any team forming, or any villain being developed.
To chime in on your sequel talk, I worked opening night, usually the busiest show time for a superhero summer blockbuster, not even half the theater was full for the 730 show, and almost every member of the audience expressed some form of hate towards this movie. When the general audience that usually accepts a Transformers or Pixels says that about your movie, I don't think you're getting a sequel, especially after they revealed the box office for Friday night tracking at just half of the initial projections

  • @larkin2662
    @larkin2662 9 лет назад +4

I disagree telling people to see this film just so you can say you saw it. Terrible reason. People can see this movie for far less money than a theater ticket if you have a Netflix account and wait a few months. Going to sub-par films encourages studios to make sub-par films. The only way for Fox to treat this franchise with respect is NOT support this film with your money. Once you pay for a ticket -you've supported a terrible movie. Your enjoyment is not a condition for Fox. They get your money either way. So this excuse to go just to be part of the experience is a terrible reason to go. It sounds like something Fox is hoping you do and a waste of money.

I would agree with Denis on this one, the "1 Year Later" was the worst thing that happened to this film. When explaining it to a friend I said It was like reading starting a book for a book assignment for school and getting halfway threw before you realize you don't have enough time to finish it, so you skip to the last 3 chapters and read to the end. I told them Victor was a cool guy before the time skip and 1 year later he wants to not only live by himself but destroy the world but why? The only shred of reasoning is "You destroyed your world but you won't destroy my world too." Earth is still there Doom is the one destroying it.

Don't agree with the views on the beginning. To me, it was a mash-up of Jimmy Neutron and Meet the Robinsons. And the relationship between Reed and Ben felt like it was ripped off from a Wildcards novel, where the wimpy guy has a friendship with a tough dude whose dad owns a junkyard. The science was ridiculous and the notion that Doctor Storm was recruiting scientists at a high school science fair felt like it was ripped off from an Atomic Robo comic. And it got worse from there!

+Richard Dufault Finally someone with taste! Trank had no respect for the source material. He just wanted to make it his own, and his ideas were crap. I mean, they get their powers from drunk driving a teleporter? Fox stepped in to try and fix it and failed miserably. Trank should stick to original scripts.

That part totally killed the four in FF4 because one was missing in action and got her powers by luck.

ColliderVideos do you think switching the origins of Reed and Doom would have made for better characters? They should have made Reed be the failed scientist who started the project and then left and made Doom the newcomer. That way they could have built chemistry between Doom and Susan which would have changed once Reed came back and set up a real rivalry and given a reason for Doom to want revenge.

i was pretty bummed that they skipped the discovery of powers bit with the 'one year later' cutaway. but honestly, it did make sense as to the story they wanted to tell. the flow of it didn't really seem disjointed, if the story they wanted to tell was 'what are the consequences of the government using suddenly superpowered teenagers and the pursuit of greed'. however, the movie didn't seem to have a focus, and that's where it seemed like it failed. I wish this would have been two movies instead. The first being teenagers coming to terms with their powers, and then the next being the government wanting to use them.
either way, i feel that the problems with this movie are on par with 2008's The Incredible Hulk, which, to me, made me feel NOTHING for the title character, SKIPPED the discovery of his powers, ASSUMED that the audience would know his backstory through newspaper articles(which is a step up in Fant4stic, which at least had video footage.) and was incredibly BORING until RDJ showed up. One thing Hulk was better at was at least they had more action sequences. But action sequences without substance is exactly what people hate about the Transformers movie series.

On set, Trank was said to be abusive and insulting to the crew and cast. The studio hadn't wanted Whiplash star Teller, but Trank had fought for him. Then he ended up almost fighting Teller, who has a reputation for sarcasm and recalcitrance while working. At one point, the conflict nearly became physical, with Trank and Teller chest to chest, daring each other to throw the first punch. Neither did.
