Raw Gemstones still in rock, found on my new Claim.

- Absolutely love the look of raw natural garnets. This claim has great potential to produce some amazing fully formed garnet crystals. You should see the beautiful gemmy red stones I was able to find in this first trip into the claim. Lots more exploration will be required and hopefully the garnet finds just keep getting better and better. I find Gemstone hunting every bit as exciting as gold panning. And I absolutely love finding garnets.

Excellent lesson, Dan. So many people never admit that they made a mistake, let alone learn from it.
Nobody would learn anything if they got it right the first time.
You remind me of ALL of my science teachers over the years. If any of them made a mistake answering a question in class........the very next class they brought it up and corrected themselves. I didn't realize what was happening......at the time. Truth and accuracy were most important. I think there are many people today that could certainly benefit from that way of thinking!!
Don't worry about making mistakes, we are all human. Great finds!
💯%!
I'm glad he admitted it though so that we could all learn something. Dan has one of the healthiest growth mindsets I've seen in a while!
Good,morning !
My father used to say, You learn something every day if you pay attention. I've always said the day you stop learning should be the day you stop breathing.
Nicely done Dan 👍🏼
Those black crystals at 15:00 are likely hornblende, very common in garnet bearing metamorphic rock!! In my most recent video I shared a couple boulders with some nice big fans of hornblende, lots of garnet in that area too. Pegmatites do form in metamorphic rock but as intrusions caused by fluids and gasses let off from nearby granites or magma I believe. Awesome finds by the way, garnet has to be one of my favorite minerals😃
Might be staurolite with that twinning.
I figured it was just tourmaline
Pegmatites are extremely common associated with nearby plutons and formed from ther resudial melt. There they can form pegmatites (large crystal size) or applites (very small crystal size). But pegmatites can also be formed by other tectonis. The Evje-Iveland pegmatite field in south norway consits out of several houndres pegmatite bodies. The most of them formed thru an so called "underplatting" event. In this case the pegmatites formed under special T and P conditions. Many of these bodies also formed garnet during their formation. Thus you can find large garnets within magmatic feldspar without any signs of an metamorphic overprint.
I love his energy and peppy voice. Wish I could go prospecting with him, I love raw gems so much.
Would be so cool to sieve a bucket of garnets and use them as sand in a fish aquarium.
I was thinking the exact same during the closeup! Would be awesome!
If you can't get access to somewhere that has garnet sands to sieve, you can always buy garnet sand. It's a common and relatively affordable abrasive, and you can buy it in any quantity you want. Give it a thorough washing and maybe classify it to the size you want before adding it to your tank. My house is filled with rocks and after running out of places to put specimens, I've started displaying them in my fish tank too.
I've done it for snails! Find a spot with local garnets and pan the river sand! You'll end up with just pinkish red sand!
@@Sleepyjew wish I could! I don't think there are any of those in Finland. Have to enjoy what you happen to have some you. :)
love how you Gold Miners / Prospectors get along so well, "Yah Your Guna Get Wet". but that's the fun part of finding gold and precious material.
One of Peter Senge's 11 Laws of Organizational Learning is there are no mistakes if the mistakes result in a learning opportunity/experience. Plus, knowledge is something that no one can take away.
Really needed some of your positive vibes after all of the bad news coming from Ukraine.. Literally saw a two mile long train full of tanks passing my house in The Netherlands.. Shit is going downhill here in Europe, so it's nice to have someone with nothing but positive energy making my day. Thank you so much Dan for your endless stream of positive energy!
Stay safe. Sending you prays from Roswell NM, hugs and love
Good luck out there across the pond. Hope things calm down.
yikes! hope you andyours staysafe
I thought the Netherlands got rid of almost all there tanks in 2011.
God bless and be with you all.

Love watching Dan. He so loves what he does that he exudes happiness. Sometimes you just need to watch happiness.
Exactly
The only thing growing faster than his collection of valuables, is his beard. And it's looking good!
It is… it’s legendary.
Then you sleep with him cuz a woman doesn't like a beard on a man you men can all like each other's beard so much but you're not going to get any .. until you shave that ugly beard off your face
Waiting for the viking braids....
A delightful beard, but I'm one of those rare women that like a good beard. My husband's was as soft as Dan's looks to be.
A true honest person is the one who admits they were wrong and comes back to correct it....
You can send me garnets any time lol! I would love a specimen for my collection before i die. Which i am currently doing, from breast cancer… it’s in the liver and chemo made it worse. You’re helping just by posting new videos, i’m living vicariously through you!
Hey Dan. I think you are THE MOST SINCERE person on RUclips. Thank you for putting such an emphasis on your correction. Im a big fan.
Fun fact from the other side of the continent: Garnets just like this were commercially mined in Connecticut until deposits were found in the Adirondack Mountains. Pea size vs. softball size. Most of it was being crushed into abrasives, so quality was less important than production.
Those black longer crystals, I would bet those are tourmaline.
Also, Dan in your geology learning journey, try to find yourself a good geologic compass. By measuring the direction and angle of those rock units you can find other exposures or intersections with streams and roads or other interesting rock units. This is typically called strike and dip direction, or dip dip direction. It was definitely one of my favorite parts of Geo undergrad.
I hike and rockhound the CT garnet trail! Amazing quality and quantity of garnets, and the black spires I think are black schroll or starulite. Not sure but I've got a jar full of both!
Before I continue watching I have to say that admitting mistakes is a fantastic quality in a person. I make them frequently at work and will totally own them when I realize that they were made. You feel dumb but hey, nobody's perfect, owning them makes you accountable and more trustworthy than the guy/gal who is "never wrong".
Now on with the show!
Neat rocks Dan
learning from your mistakes is your greatest teacher !
If your not making mistakes your not doing anything!
I really have respect for you coming out on camera admitting to a mistake and giving a lesson about learning from your mistakes!
I really enjoy these videos, thank you sir!
Can’t wait. Thanks Dan. Be well.
While I'm sure the garnets on their own will look amazing, I gotta admit seeing them still set inside the host stone looks pretty cool
Only a good man can admit his mistakes.! I knew the minute I saw that picture with the garnets exposed what it was but I am from New Hampshire and we are loaded with garnet.! I MEAN LOADED.!! I love painting for gold and if I find some beautiful garnets in the process as they are a lot heavier than some, I will keep them.! Absolutely great work you do and I can't wait to see what is to come. God bless.! 🙏
Thanks for the refreshing video, tired of Fake news. I've learned more from this video than a semester at high school...a picture is worth a thousand words compared to textbooks filled with technical unpronounceable words...hitting that like button.
Dan Hurd I would like to thank you for putting out these videos even in the midst of all this atrocities that are going on around the world thank you and God bless
As a firefighter, I 100% agree about never stop learning!
1:41 THAT stone in your hand is almost identical to the the one I had found in my child years! I tapped that thing apart with a hammer and screw driver and got over 100 garnets the size of dice. Didn't know what they were when I was kid, only that the multi sided brown rocks were cool. I threw almost all of them away when we had to move to a new house and I am still kicking myself all these years later.
My grandma always says, that every day you learn something new.
Takes a real man and a real prospector to admit their wrong thats why I'm a subscriber and thousands of others ! Good job
I’m still learning new things about geology too. I’m sure you have people lined up to catch you as soon as you say anything wrong. Always enjoy your videos.
Wow! Those garnets are "the schist!" Thanks for sharing!
I went to garnet mountain once, everywhere looked mined. Just a ton of rhyolite slabs. I finally found a garnet it was big, looked like someone shaped it perfect with all the facets. As soon as I got it out of the rhyolite I dropped the garnet in the grass. Never to be seen again
The views with the fog and forest in the backround omg wow !.🙂
Yes I am 62 learning from your channel something all the time
I appreciate you correcting yourself most people wouldn’t do that just another reason why I watch your videos keep it #prospector
Now you have me so addicted. Omg I love your channel.
Those perfectly shaped crystals that don’t stick the the schist would make amazing jewelry. I would love to use natural crystals, beautiful!!!
I love your videos they pick me up when I'm down always!
-Sitting here with food poisoning-
You inspire me. Just by enjoying your life. Thank you.
So I watch a LOT of videos across many different subjects, and one thing I've noticed that all my favorite channels (including yours!) have in common is that every so often the person making the vids comes on and says, "Hey, look at this mistake I made! And here's what we've learned from it." And I am very much here for it.
Just want to tell you I love your channel. Your energy is magical 💜
You are PRECIOUS. Thank you for all the knowledge and beauty you share with us.
Imagine collecting enough garnet pebbles to pave a pathway through the garden! Oh my!
My beautiful birthday stone. How fun this would be hounding these stones.
You need a weeding gardening pad of closed cell foam on a shoulder sling to sit on. Cold stones to sit on while working will introduce you to close friends in the rear port you never want to meet. ✌
Rock fishing is my favorite sport.
Never stop stopping
🌻💜🌻 I like the black and brown garnets!
With those garnets you should sell them and build a small cabin overlooking that breathtaking view! OMG!
Had no idea how fun rocks can be. Thank You!
Ya know found this channel a couple days ago watched a few videos and it was the opening to this video that earned my subscription always be learning and never be afraid to admit you were wrong.
You know, I've been thinking. I think you could make some good money on black garnets too if they were truly black and large enough. There is a demand for jewelry made with black gem stones and a necklace or bracelet or ring made with black garnets would be a beautiful novelty that no one has seen before.
Its just an idea, but maybe something to think about. Ask some of your friends, especially those in their twentys or thirtys. I'd be interested in buying some raw stones to experiment with.
Thanx Dan
Thanks for the beautiful places you are sharing.
There was an outcropping of Virginia's "Great Garnet Belt" on my grandfather's farm. The schist wasn't very crumbly but would break off in sections, It was also chock full of garnets, the average of which was about 1/2-1" across, but they were poor quality. Every now and then you might break one open to see thick, gemmy flakes of a very nice garnet red. The outer "skin" of the crystals was brownish with tiny flecks of mica in it - only the shape gave it away as anything special. We used to dig around in the outcropping as kids just to see if we could find big ones. Every now and then, there would be one approaching 2" across.
frm pk ....fr me papa u r my best teacher fr gems stones nd gold finding...im learning alot....thanks papa...
I get a very Bob Ross vibe from you which is a solid compliment.
Your profound understanding of the learning process is exceptional and all too rare these days. Congratulations on possessing such a fine capacity for the art of DISCOVERY.
"Making mistakes is not a bad thing it's a chance to learn something new" 100%
ooh i love those stones, in italy there is a lovely small village, which used those to build roads and stairs and it was super fun to visit. I was studying geology at university and i got to bring home like 10kg of a rock full of garnets. I think my mum has it in the middle of the garden somewhere :)
Soak em for a few days in soapy water and stir, then soak em in white vinegar and stir every day for a few days! Colors will pop!
That’s it… I’m convinced BC is where Heaven is located. If I ever get to a point in life I can take a month off I’m going to vacation in British Columbia. Because it’s my birthstone I love seeing your videos about garnets.
Just make sure you come during summer unless you like rain.

I'm about to get my MTO thanks to your other vids. I have much to learn on the legal part of the prospecting. Like taxes and claim purchase processes.
I will get a hang of it soon enough.
But again thank you for your videos... much respect. 👍
Garnets on toast . . Mmmmm Thanks Dan !! I love garnets
Excellent good to learn thinks for being our teacher very nice work Dan
You have some crazy good cranberry claim there Sir.. nice colors. For your viewers, you can use dental metal tools under water to remove and clean the garnet crystals. The steel in the tools are softer than the Garnets so it won't scratch them. Dan that black Kyanite, quartz and garnet blend is really unique. I haven't seen that before.
So much respect for showing and correcting your mistakes!!!!
Red garnets are my favorite stone along with Amethyst! Much more lovely than Ruby!
Your intro's are always so inviting, Dan. That's another thumb's up from me. Greetings from Australia.
lucky bastard! that claim is so beautiful. ide love to spend a day up there garnet hunting. must be heaven to spend that time by yourself out there for a day.
A day you don't learn something new I've always considered to be a wasted day. Always keep learning! Thanks for everything you do Dan!!
spent many years vacationing and camping up at Harrison lake. love the place
Love all the prospecting videos, i wish i had more time to go digging. Ive found some cool fossils and a geode the size of a bowling ball with great crystals on the inside. Keep all the amazing stuff coming.
I really enjoy when you explain how the minerals were formed.
Oh to be back in B-E-A-utiful British Columbia! Great video Dan, love seeing those amazing garnets, especially in the host rock. We're still under 4' of snow here in Manitoba, and spring can't come soon enough. Looking forward to rock hounding when things get thawed. Thanks for bringing us along on another adventure. Cheers Rob.
I live in western North Carolina. Our local rock quarry produces gravel for all our driveways in our area. And we walk the gravel and find the best garnets. I’ve found some that are golf ball size and perfect!!!!
I’m so glad I discovered your channel Dan it’s brought me so much pleasure I cannot begin to explain . Never stop and keep up the great show thank you
Gold, Quarts, Garnets. Oh my.
Stunning scenery and amazing garnets! I just realized - since you explained, I now know more about the sample I've had for years in my collection. :)
There are no mistakes only opportunities!
Your videos are good for my rock addiction and good for my soul. You truly are the bob ross of rockhounding. And instead of a fro you have the beard flow.
Love your outlook on learning. If we stop learning, we stop living!
Dan…it’s always a pleasure to come to your awesome channel & watch you, a true hero & master, at work!! These episodes are actually FUN, exciting, & very informative. You teach us all about the wonders of nature, the beauty of the outdoors, & just how to have fun with what you do!! I used to live up in Auburn California. Our house was right next to the American River, Sutter’s Mill; & we used to go down the switchback trails to the River, early in the mornings, to just relax & pan for gold!! Some of the funnest times, ever!! Keep up the great & fantastic work!!
Beard is looking as majestic as it ever did! Love your wholesome light in the world Dan :)
Back in the mid 1960's, I was in a group of river rafters on the "Big Bend" of the Columbia River in BC (from Golden to Revelstoke). We stopped at a lumber camp near the Bend. A lumberman told me about 1/4 inch red/brown garnet crystals lying loose on the ground nearby. They had wearhered out from a similar schist. I borrowed a rake, shovel and a empty 5 gal bucket. Found the garnets. They were in an inch deep layer. In 15 minutes, I had filled the bucket. Sadly I had to leave it behind because the raft pilot wouldn't allow it on board. The garnet site is now underwater because the river was dammed sometime later.
Hi Dan I’m a regular watcher of all your videos and I have to say the scenery and the colours in this video are outstanding. You are one lucky guy to see vistas like that on a regular basis…. Not at all jealous 😂keep up the good work x
Great video. I especially liked the opening segment.
Awesome scenery, beautiful garnets and a dirty car, just a perfect day. Thank you for sharing , god bless and stay safe and well 🙏🥰👍👏❤️
