Sensei Tomoji Miyamoto does a beautiful Bassai Dai kata, in presence of Master Shigeru Egami. From the early 70's. Example of Shoto-kai's peculiar relaxed Karate Do style.
Out of curiousity, I googled Bassai Dai. The first hits were Shotokan videos and I recognised the Kata - barring a few cosmetic details and such. Except it was like watching it in still images with the pauses, the exaggeration of form and technique. I've practised Shoto-Kai for over 15 years and the way I was shown to do Kata was like this, fluid yet powerful and most importantly with no pauses - as though the entire kata was one movement. This, this is what I was taught to practise.
Shotokai is an envolved form if shotokan so Egami got to the conclusión that the most eficcient is linking movements and not doing isolated movements as previous Styles of karate. What is better we do not know but this is it's history.
Anko Itosu is credited with creating Bassai Sho sometime in the late nineteenth century. It is thought he created it from a version of the original Passai that was popular at the time.
@Ronin6575 Is it not that Bassai dai is meant to be a freely flowing kata, with constant movement rather that the continual stop-starting of other styles?
it´s the first time i see a kata from these style. It´s beautifull but looks very diferent to the other styles, like a mix of shtokan and taijiquan. I hope to see an aplication or a figth from these style
Hello, I recommend to visit this Channel ruclips.net/user/jocama666 It is a very good shotokai máster Who practise a los of bunkai applied to self deffense 😉
OF COURSE IS DIFFERENT BECAUSE THERE ARE TECHNIQUE WITHOUT CONTRACTION!!PEOPLE USUALLY BELIEVES THAT´S ONLY CONTRACTION GENERATE POWER...WRONG!!wITHOUT CONTRACTION AND WITH FLUIDITY AND LONG MOVEMENTS...NOT SHORT....WE CAN REACH MUCH LONGER AND WITH MORE EFFICACY!!!
Power, if it exists, I don't think it would be visible... and if its visible, it's because the person is using it to make faces, stopping the movement (snaps - wasting the energy) or tensing his/her body (waste too).
