- The 13th of February, 2018, marks the 10th anniversary of National Apology Day.
On that day ten years ago, then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd delivered the National Apology to Australia’s Indigenous Peoples. In particular, it included an apology to the Stolen Generations.
The Apology is now considered a defining moment in Australian history.
To mark the tenth anniversary of Australia's apology to its indigenous peoples, the ABC is posting an archive Kevin Rudd's speech in the House of Representatives, given on February 13th, 2008.

It’s a Lego click on hair. It comes in different colours and styles.

Julia Gillard's internal thoughts: "What part of Kevin's back do you think a knife will slip into easiest?"
Rudd did the same thing to Beasley.
My great grandma was apart of the Stolen generation, I don't know the full story of it though. In Indigenous culture we have a thing called totems, totems are something we have to take care of. We can't eat, kill, hurt our totem at all. If your Indigenous you can ask you parent/parents what your totem(s) are. (Totems are an animal you have to take care of, you can not harm them. You Take care of them, they take care of you.)
I know a few of my totems which are:
Dolphins
Torres Strait Pigeon
Dragonfly
Sea Turtle
I do not know the rest of them sadly because My great grandma was apart of the stolen generation. Meaning her totem is unknown, if we knew her totem my totem would be the same as My great grandma and my mother.
(Totems get passed down, So if my great grandfathers totem was a Shark my dad, and 2 brothers would have the same as him.)
If I ever find out what my other totem is I would be great-full but for now it is unknown.
My school learns woiwurrung for our language class. It’s the language our school was built on. I’m not indigenous myself but learning about it is really interesting! My classmates totem is a kangaroo I think. Maybe. I’ll have to ask him.
@@eurywoulahan7412 Your so lucky to be able to learn that my school was also built on indigenous land but we don't get to learn their language :>

Why is the British royal family not apologizing? Wasn't Australia colonized in their name?
Good point :o they should apologize too.
I mean if you think about it, Britain would have to apologize for a loooooooooooooot of stuff since they basically colonized half the planet
When the stolen generation happened Australia was independent so the British had no say at the time, but However they were okay with it to happen. But they still would have to say sorry for massacring probably thousands of innocent Australians.

*My Parents. My Brother and I Oppose the White Australia Policy too*
Why won't they fight back? They just whine when they could get rid of them. I'm white and I'd still support it.
Joe, do you have a mom?
I hope you’re doing well now, the white Australia policy is a bunch of bull crap and we should all respect each other and love each other no matter race, religion or beliefs. What they did back then was terrible.
I study this in University and when I watch the speech... I could not help but cry profoundly, just for the sorrow that these people went through for years and years.
Slavic Aussie what? The British used guns while the Indigenous Australian uses Spear. Plus, the British are far more advanced in terms of militarism
I remember that day. I remember I was in year 7 in High School and all the students gather together in the library to watch this live. I will never forget that day.
I was just a child when this happened. I knew it was a big deal, but it's not until now that I sat down and watched the whole 30 minute speech that I realise how ASTOUNDING that this happened at all. How many governments, or government officials, would have the guts and the integrity to come out and take complete responsibility. And judging from Rudd's other comments, back then this apology was controversial, beccause of course it was. But he still went through with it. Everyone who made this possible has my respect.
I cry every time I see this. And I am an American. I look forward to the day when our leaders have the wisdom to follow suit. We need it.
I'm American too and this speech holds so much meaning. I wish that our leaders wrote speeches like this one.
Probably not coming from Trump though ^^'
great comment! you're right!
Lauren Friedman As an australian I can say that Kevin Rudd was a great leader with reliable principles. I never have and still don’t see him as a greedy politician.
Do yous acknowledge the Native Americans and what they went through?
This happened in 2008 right? Meaning that Midnight Oil had been had been pulling some big stunts for decades to get an apology. That's nice.
This was truly an amazing moment and brings me to tears each time I watch it. The speech reminds us of the need for this to have taken place. I spoke to a friend of mine the day after this speech who, from what I gathered in previous conversations, was one of those children stolen from their families. Just by coincidence we'd arranged to catch up. To see the raw emotion first hand like that will stay with me forever.

I don't believe in inherited guilt for individuals, but I think it's healthy for a government to formally apologise for the wrongs of the past. A national government is a continuous institution, so in that sense the government (though no individual) is responsible for past evils.
I wouldn't mind a national apology for the Iraq War now.
Well it was legal to murder and steal children to the 70s, so probably your relations were involved in this
I will accept a government apologizing for its own or past governments’ polices that have been harmful.
I will not accept having an ethnic group as a whole apologize for wrongdoings, real or alleged. The idea that whole ethnicities/races of people, dead and alive, are collectively guilty is extremely dangerous; that idea has frequently led to genocide.
Yeah, the thing is, indigenous people are still discriminating against and left out. It’s why they die earlier, get killed by police at a much higher rate, and are poorer and less educated on average.
They aren't discriminated against by law though. A government can't really apologise for individual attitudes. There are definitely attempts to 'close the gap', whether successful or unsuccessful. Being discriminated against by individuals or groups is less demoralising than by your own government.@@BrisbaneBroncosfan67
It has nothing to do with their actions? @@BrisbaneBroncosfan67
2008 wtf when I was alive. They could of done this so many years earlier.
This apology is way too late.
Apparently, they were worried about 'taking the blame' and Howard didn't want the Indigenous population to sue. But yes it really should have happened sooner, if they did sue, the government would deserve it.
Apologise for what? The decenends of us Brits stayed in our country. Your ancestors invaded Australia!

Has this symbolic gesture altered the situation? I heard something happened last year - that they were still upset or something.
It hasn’t, because the idea of appearing as a victim to gain concessions and sympathy points is in vogue.
Showing my kids in class this today. 15 years past and there's still more to do for all the injustice still faced by our indigenous neighbours, friends and family. I only hope that in the 15 years ahead of us, we'll look back grateful for the changes we've implemented today, and not in disappointment for the change that could have been.
Teaching Australian history in my Canadian grade 7 Social Studies classes and the similarities between the treatment of the Australian aborigines and the First Nation natives of Canada are extremely similar. Any land taken over by western European colonialism will have similar stories. Such a shameful past for both countries.
Some hearts have infinite wisdom and love to give to the world including Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Kevin Rudd.
Australia right here doing the dirty of what Great Britain should have done. Nonetheless, one of the most significant moments in our FUTURE. Time is now to uphold the words.
It is not my right or my place to offer forgiveness, but I'm glad Kevin Rudd took this step. The damage has already been done, but at least this gives us hope of moving forward and creating a good future for Australia someday.
Sorry but I really want to make this joke:
Then afterwards Kevin turns around and breaks out into song:

It’s great actually. It’s acknowledges pre-colonial Australians whilst also allowing for Australia to sail into the future instead of being ‘young’.
It is just beautiful to see that there finaly was a apology to the stolen generation. That time period was down right horrible to read/listen about or even witness yourself. I cannot imagine how many tears were dropped on the floor in that time period and it is horrible to even think about. So glad the prime minister finally stood up and sayed sorry for everything the past did wrong.

One of the great moments of human history. Very rare to see a government apologizing for the past wrongdoings of the past governments, if not the nation as a whole.
Not genuine the mindset is still racist and toxic.
Taking Aboriginal kids, jobs and forcing income management in a Murdoch intervention is saying sorry? As the tent embassy said as I walked to the bus: This is not sorry, this is crocodile tear apologies. Sorry means you don't do it again.
@@havanadaurcy1321 Australians are originally from England UK this is the racist mindset the English brought when they invaded Australia in drones as many then and still today are treating Aborigines as second class citizens ,many left the UK due to the UK poverty and economy was bad so many moved for a better life.

who are they apologizing to? the people they still dont recognize?
thats pretty cold and heartless tbh
thing is with the stolen people, where are their birth certificates?
so you cant even prove they ever existed, and continue to ignore them to this day
theres some reparation scheme going on atm in nsw right?
so if your from a stolen generation, then how can you prove it, if your elder that was stolen has no paperwork?
and paperwork is required then they're just virtue signalling by trying to appear well meaning, but where is all the money going? its obviously already been appointed?
so if i were to take that as an example then is it safe to assume that its perfectly legal to steal someone and use them for whatever purpose you desire whether legal or illegal, as long as they dont have a birth certificate?
