    We need an update to this video as we now know that a team can also relay the types of pitches by banging on a trash can.

    These baseball videos just warm me up on a cold wet night, with visions of watching a game in the warm sunlight of a June afternoon, sitting on a bleacher seat. I think a good New Years resolution is to break out the old score card and score a few games come spring time. It's about time I pay a visit to the Bronx and check out that new stadium.

      One of my boyhood friends went off to Annapolis. He studied hard and became a big shot in the Navy. He now lives in San Diego where the weather is always perfect. I often think of him while I'm shoveling the snow drifts from out of my driveway. ;-\

    thanks for this. I'm not entirely new to the game but I have a hard time figuring out which pitch is which when I'm listening to commentators. I'm from a country that has no interest in the game and I love it. i learnt most of the rules just by watching. I have one question if you wouldn't mind taking the time answering. When I see a series of figures beside a pitcher's name for a game due to start eg Colón [4-3] does this mean the win/loss ratio for that pitcher so far this season? It's useful as I bet on games having high scores or not.

      Yes. It is win-loss. But it is a misleading stats. Many good pitchers do not get the win because of their teams not because their actual performance

    • @TheOnDeckCircle
      @TheOnDeckCircle  8 лет назад +10

      +First Last Usually the pitcher will have the final say on which pitch he will throw, but a curveball is very different than a fastball, so the catcher has to know what is coming if he doesn't want to get hurt.

    • @juanitolondon2680
      @juanitolondon2680 6 лет назад

      Watch the catcher next time , he will give the pitcher "options" of pitches through hand signals

      @@juanitolondon2680 That's what that is? lol, I have been watching baseball for a year, always wondered why these dudes are doing finger signs in-front of their nether regions

    • @juanitolondon2680
      @juanitolondon2680 5 лет назад +1

      Mario A that's why the catcher pretty much always catches the ball. He knows what pitch is going to be thrown . The signs are by the nether regions so only the pitcher can see it.

    Why do set up men and closers only pitch 1-2 innings? Do they not have the endurance of starters but still have the skill of starters? Also, long relievers and middle relievers are just kind of meh pitchers and are used in like blowouts right?

    • @TheOnDeckCircle
      @TheOnDeckCircle  3 года назад

      You're right. The "best" pitchers usually end up as starters, but the best relievers will probably be the closer and set up man.
      Long relievers are usually around if something happens to a starter early, like he gives up a lot of runs in the first couple innings or gets hurt early. But there are also lots of times a starter may only make it five (or four) innings, so there's four more innings to cover (and no closer or setup man to use if you're losing). Those innings add up quickly.
      For blowouts, there's been a trend in the past few years that if your team is losing by like 8 or more runs they'll make a position player pitch to let the real pitchers rest.

    Very detailed explanation for beginners, however, I really have to disagree with the label of the starters being the "best" pitchers on the team. I would say they most likely poses the better stamina, repertoire , and ability to repeat delivery motions. But certainly not be labeled as the "best" in a general sense.

    How common is it for the pitcher to throw a perfect game?

  • @seancraw385
    @seancraw385 4 года назад +1

    there is multiple things wrong with the pitchers. first the two seam doesn’t not drop and sinker does that’s why it’s called a sinker. from a rhp a two seam fastball with break into a right handed batter

  • @tiz6006

    Why do pitchers sometimes throw to first base instead of to the catcher?

    • @TheOnDeckCircle
      @TheOnDeckCircle  3 года назад +1

      They would be trying to throw out or 'pickoff' the runner who is on first base. I have a video called "Intro to Baseball: Stolen Bases, Pick Offs, and Caught Stealing" that explains it more.

    pitcher balls how many balls to batsman

    • @taranwilliamson1931
      @taranwilliamson1931 6 лет назад

      The number of pitches depends on how well the batters and the pitcher are performing but the bare minimum is 9 pitches per inning x 9 innings so if a pitcher stays in all game he pitches at least 81 times

    • @hifijohn
      @hifijohn 5 лет назад

      one is the minimum.there is no maximum, as long as the batter can foul of the ball he stays at the plate.

    • @philmccracken179
      @philmccracken179 4 года назад

      The minimum is 3 pitches. A batter can get out on first pitch
