    I agree with all of your criticisms. In addition, there's on other thing that I still can't believe that Maserati didn't do: *THEY DIDN'T PUT IN THE ZF 8-speed!* It's not like it can't handle the torque (or lack thereof) from the naturally aspirated engine. And, it would have improved both fuel economy and acceleration times. Plus, it really helps heavier cars like the Lexus LC500 (and, of course, the Granturismo) that rely on tighter gear ratios and staying high in the RPM range in order to eek out maximum performance (insert reference to the Lexus 10-speed auto here). IMO, that upgrade should have been at the top of the priority list right after the infotainment system, as the transmission is already in the Ghibli, QP, and Levante, and it would have effectively give the Granturismo a new lease on life from a performance perspective, a refinement perspective, and an emissions/fuel consumption perspective.

      Italian journalists received Maserati's reply that it is technically impossible to install the ZF 8-speed on this model, it is necessary to redesign a totally new car.

    I think the best would be to be options: traditional or modern. If the client choose the traditional then everything remains the same but if the client wants modern than you give him the new key and so on even if it might add some weight (few hundred grams) to the car.

    • @RonsRides

      That would be cool, traditional spec, modern spec. Which would you choose?

    Ron: Thanks for your response and for taking time to feature the Maserati marque. I like AMG cars and have a 2013 c63. Its an awesome car with nearly 500hp. It would kill the GTS in many perf. categories. But you know what? I'd dump it for a GTS. Its just so beautiful and classy. The GTS would of looked great in 1967, looks great in 2017 and will look great in 2067! I wonder if Maserati could \ would offer the 7 year maintenance plan like Ferrari does. Might give it a boost. For the new 8.4in screen, just changing the background color and the font of the letters would of made a huge diff and away from Chrysler. Someone at FCA needs to put a bit more effort and thought into the details.

    • @RonsRides
      @RonsRides  7 лет назад

      Yes I agree, made a big difference and they are on the right path! I never even thought about have a 7 year maintenance plan. I think that would be a key component to bringing in more customers since people feel as if Maserati's have a bad reliability reputation.

    I agree with the things that you went over. The interior needs to be re-evaluated, I have no idea how it got approved for production for a 2018 model. The exterior is fine, Maserati is killing this side of the market.

    I think Maserati didn't want to spend too much on updating the car since it will be axed pretty soon, and then it's replacement (hopefully the Alferi) will receive the trendy new technology like keyless entry, power boot lids etc. Still though, the updates it has got like the new grille and power boost make this the last hurrah of the wonderfully gritty Granturismo!

    I would improve on the 6- speed gear. I would also add blind spot recognition and reverse camera. These options are coming as standard on the cheapest cars these days. A brand like maserati should not struggle in providing those.
    Also, people should not compare this car to ferraris and lambos which dont jave these options. Simply because the maserati is not on that level of sportiness if you think about it.

    • @RonsRides
      @RonsRides  6 лет назад +1

      Maserati is more passion and driving experience focused. If you get into one of these GT's they may not be the most practical/tech driven machines but they are gorgeous, sound perfect and are fun to drive.

    Okay Ron I think you've made a bit of a mistake here. This last version of this generation of the Gran Turismo is a hold over, an entirely new car is in development. The manufacturing and expense realities to do not allow for the extensive redesign, retooling, and re-manufacture of interior parts already integrated into other parts and systems in the car. This car is in every detail finely wrought in terms of artistic choices, that is form, as well as logical function. The Artists at Pininfarina have made their judgements and are satisfied with them, they believe that the level of artistry reaches the timeless and the clasiic, and the particular design elements are fully integrated with the total design. Personally I see no flaw whatever with the aesthetic of the climate control panel. The steering wheel is really one of the finest and most elegant yet sporty wheels in production today; one aspect of it with which I am not entirely pleased is the semi-rounded bottom of the interior armature, with the four round buttons. It lends some bulkiness to the appearance of the wheel, but it is also a unique line and not devoid of beauty. Plus it serves well functionally, the buttons are easy to engage and very visible, and they match the buttons elsewhere on the instrument panel. Sometimes the rational mind has to be engaged with design and a functional value has to be attached to the design decision. The seat controls are mounted on the seat because they decided that location had a value from a control and function perspective, they made that positive judgement and like it. The controls are carefully designed for tactile functionality, they look like they are, hence its appearance makes sense, here function was a higher value than form; and as to form it looks rather original and certainly acceptable enough. I bet they considered at some point making the multi-contoured cover panel of the seat switches out of carbon fiber, but realized consistency and beauty would be a manufacturing difficulty with that material. Your opinion seems to be slanted toward the idea that newer is better, but Pininfarina would I think strongly disagree. The interior designers long ago decided they were satisfied with the whole of the aesthetic integration, the congruency of forms, the originality and beauty of this car, and making such changes as you suggest were in no way required; nor were they reasonable from a cost and manufacturing perspective, particularly since the car's production life is soon coming to an end.

    • @RonsRides
      @RonsRides  7 лет назад

      Great comment and explanations, I totally appreciate your opinion on the car. I like the car, always have. The reason why I brought it up is because they didnt leave the entire car the same even though it was on its way out of production and since they decided to change a few things, I felt as if my small suggestions weren't too bad. I've said before and even in the video and comments that I didnt think a ton of rnd was needed to make these changes. I wasnt asking them to change the engine, trans, etc. Just smaller things to help as I want to see the car and the brand do well, trust me. I hope they can blow us away with the replacement GT. I'm really looking forward to it!

    • @RootsandTendrils
      @RootsandTendrils 7 лет назад

      Hi Ron, love your attention to Maserati and in particular the Gran Turismo, I think it is the ideal car, and plan on purchasing a used one as it truly is a strong value. Thus, I want to fully understand the car, in all of its attributes and limitations. Regarding this refresh I think it was founded in Maserati's strong belief in the beauty and wide range of performance designed into its well conceived architecture. I think the designers felt they could actually improve its appearance or at least offer an appealing alternate version of the two previous designs; my opinion is they succeeded smartly. May I suggest you offer to do video presentations on used GTs offered for sale, with detailed and complete information as to content and model year changes, plus a test drive where you give a factual narration of your driving, comfort, and performance impressions. I am also interested in a female impression of the car, and that would certainly invite interest.

  • @djbrianc
    @djbrianc 7 лет назад +5

    I would add to your critique that the engine did need a better upgrade. You say it perfect but this price point and type of car to compete needs to come in with over 500 hp. Whether that’s from a tuned V8 or Alfa’s twin turbos V6 for mpg I leave upto them but over 500 hp is almost a must. The new Aston Martin Vantage just dropped with a 505 hp AMG engine. Only Porsche can get away with six figures cars that start below 500 hp but they are light and have the performance to back it up. The Gran Turismo with its looks and sound says fast GT but performs more like merely adequate. 0-60 for this car should at least match its competitors.

    • @RonsRides
      @RonsRides  7 лет назад +2

      You have a great point. I guess part of me is holding on to the nostalgia of the naturally aspirated V8. I just know the next engine to boost numbers will be more than likely a twin turbo. And while that will be great for performance numbers, theres nothing like that sound/performance. If Masi can find a way to soften the turbo lag blow and keep most of that V8 roar, that would be awesome for the next GT.

    • @Jimbo8012
      @Jimbo8012 7 лет назад +3

      +djbrianc - But this obsession with performance and bhp is absolutely ridiculous. I've driven fast cars in my time and I felt that the Aston Martin V8 Vantage 4.3 is/was absolutely perfect for the road particularly in the UK with smaller A and B roads. It's got 380bhp, weights just over 1,600kg (just over 3,500lbs), does 0-60 mph in 5.1, 0-100 mph in 11.5 and 0-125 mph in 18 seconds. Fast but not intimidatingly so and it certainly doesn't need 500+ bhp.
      I was recently a passenger in a 488 GTB and the way that gathers speed is absolutely fucking ludicrous and actually not especially pleasant or particularly usable. 6 seconds of acceleration from 30mph will be about 120mph and that's an automatic driving ban in the UK if you're caught by the police. 6 seconds of acceleration in the 4.3 V8 from 30mph Vantage is about 85mph which whilst above the legal limit is only going to resort with a maximum 3 points on your licence. It's a much more usable car as a consequence at legal speeds. Car makers have lost their sanity.

      Maserati has no competitors. They are not track cars, they are performance and style. They don't need to keep up with Porsche, BMW, Mercedes either...look at this car it's beautiful and you get the Italian luxury and class without having to step up to Ferrari. Put the Ferrari on the track, that's completely different...

    5 things they have rightly not changed. Why? The cost fot doing that doesn't not justify the benefit. Neither for the company nor for the consumers. We live a world where its all about consumption these days and people fail to forget that what is "old" is not necessarily unappealing. On the contrary, the GT is in fact "old but appealing" - if you understand the philosophy of the car and how to exploit the ownership experience. Btw, that the steering wheel is 11 years old is NOT true - its design was enhanced with the 2012/2013 facelift! The company addressed the car's highest critique point - the Infotainment system - and left everything else old-school to keep its character. My only gripe with the company is that they killed the robotized manual gearbox version of the car (including the hardcore MC Stradale version) understandably due to low demand which did not justify the costs... because those versions of the car are truly the ultimate GTs and offer a visceral driving experience close to none.

    • @RonsRides
      @RonsRides  7 лет назад

      Well as far as'left everything else old-school to keep its character' they did redesign the front and back bumpers so I feel like if that was the case, they could have left it untouched as they intended and just updated the infotainment. Because its partially new, partially old. Also were those changes justified by the costs to apply them? We will see...I happen to enjoy the changes they did which is why I want to see more done to it.

    • @pierrena3420
      @pierrena3420 7 лет назад

      Personally, I don't like the exterior redesign but I understand why they did that - 1. to make the bold statement that it is a proper redesign, and 2. to align the car's design with the current design language of the brand which I personally think is not a match of the previous Pininfarina designs...

      Dawood Parvizi You can’t say that they are struggling when the Ghibli hasn’t been out for too long. Anybody that goes from a car that has only been in production for a few years to an S-Class who is the benchmark of the brand, would clearly see the flaws of the brand.

      I wouldn't say that are struggling, Im pretty sure the numbers are decent, I know the Levante is selling quite well. They do need to work on their quality control as a company. And there are other things that can be improved in the brand to get them where they need to be. Hope you dont regret selling yours in the future but enjoy your Merc.

The car is about the driving experience!!!! Jesus. Noone complains about a ferrari w no nav or screens and all the shit it doesn't come with. That steering wheel is comfortable as hell. If somethings not broke. Don't fix it. And the key. Is sonething they do with all exotics except Bentleys. It's the feeling of turning the key and turning that engine over.
