  • Betel Nut Chewing known locally as "Moma" is very popular in Ifugao. I just want to share my experiences learning about this unique "chewing culture". Betel Nut, vine leave, lime and tobacco chew.
A local experience and local thing in this beautiful Mountain Province. In this video you will see a lady named Jenny and a mountain guide named Machete, teaching me all about it!
    Moma pa More!
    Super Apir!

I've tried chewing Indian betel nuts with various flavors and they taste anywhere from bitter to sour to salty, but never sweet. In college, I had some friends who were Sikh and so they weren't allowed to drink or smoke by their religion, but betel nut was a loophole as was pot that was ingested but not smoked, like in a brownie. Not only do I now have teeth like Austin Powers, more than three in an hour I've learned will give you all the effect of drinking too many Red Bulls. Lime and lime (limestone powder and lime juice) is probably my favorite since it tastes like a tequila shot with the effects of a jaeger bomb and texture of chewing Levi Garrett (I grew up in the Ozarks having spitting contests after school).

It's psychoactive and addictive. Similar to smoking cigarettes, or yes, chewing tobacco. And sadly, it also has similar health effects if you've chewed it habitually for a very long time.

True in our country especially in our region of Cordillera, some parts of Nueva Viscaya and the neighboring provinces and some parts Mindanao but it is not exclusively in the Philippines only. I meet some people from Myanmar and Papua New Guinea who also chew bettle nut or momma and learned that we Cordillerans the Igorots' momma or bettle nut mixture are just basic compared to those foreign chewers who mix other ingredients that I am not familiar with.
