    What I recommend doing it applying the color like a normal root color and then running a comb through each section you do from root to end with a comb where the teeth are no wider than a 1/2 inch a part. This creates the best blend and gives the most consistent result with a dimensional root. That way you never worry about creating lines while painting. Especially when you can't see certain areas of your head :)

      ThorLokitty this suggestion seems like the best way to go about it as for as DIY. Thank you for simplifying this. bc it doesn't seem like it should be as complicated as some are saying.

    • @ThorLokitty
      @ThorLokitty 7 лет назад +5

      Nicole Smith it really is very simple and as a stylist I think it's think it's the best way to assure a good blend ^.^ painting is nice and can give a more "custom" look but in the end, when you're doing it yourself or aren't looking to take all day, work smart and not harder, right?

    • @nicolesmith8637

      ThorLokitty right?! ok so I am about a half inch of new growth it's darker. I'm a natural dishwater blonde. other than that I'm totally bleach blonde just about platinum. I'm want to take guy tangs 9 violet metallic and do a smudge root. do I need to pre lighten my roots first? what I'm thinking is if I don't it will just be darker in the root area and then lighter as it goes down to the blonde and I'm cool with that. what do you think? suggestions? I'm a stylist as well just haven't tried this technique yet and want to go ahead and just do it myself. also what volume developer? you think 20 is safe?

    • @ThorLokitty
      @ThorLokitty 7 лет назад

      Nicole Smith I've never used that color line but idk if it lifts very cleanly. I would say it's probably best to pre lighten because metallics can lift weird and all I can imagine is very odd hot roots if it goes bad. I would pre lighten and deposit for a safer blend. Plus when it gets too rooty for you, it will be easier to lighten I would imagine if you were to get some balayage so it doesn't turn into an ombre

    I did mine with my hands...I brushed all the hair on top of my head from the crown forward and left the back down and saturated with dark brown carefully. Used the tip of the dye bottle and went in and did the nooks n crannies and then gently rubbed in with my finger tips. Saved myself hundreds of dollars

    Those are permanent colors from wella Tho. Those make my roots organgy.. Even when using a 10 volume... I use a demi..

    This is exceptional. Common sense and a bit of a artistic eye this can be achieved. But honestly if someone lacks those two key factors this could turn out really crazy. I am doing the same but I am going to pull down with a wide tooth just a bit. This is a great job.

    Nice video I like it...I do my hair exactly like this. I get lots compliments... the only thing I do different that someone mention here is combing it so I dont get harsh lines.. I love my hair like this.. is lot easier to take care especially if you have lots of gray like me...

    I don't know if Mandy is a hairdresser or not. Regardless, if Ya'll don't have anything nice to say then maybe you need to put your talent on here. I think it turned out nice either way. I am not a hairdresser but have been to many. Never came home and liked it! I got so fed up with paying for something that I was unhappy with.
    So, 16 years ago I taught myself. I do my own roots and highlights. I'm sure no one would know I do my own. Point being hairdressers are definitely not perfect either. They usually cover their mistakes with toners, which never last long. I never tone my hair. It's never necessary.

    Next time, in the back put your hair in pig tails, probably will be easier &!still hold mirror to see. Actually turned out pretty good. What technique will you use next when it grows out?

    • @mandythomas8023
      @mandythomas8023 7 лет назад +5

      Pigtails would work great but I would have to keep taking them out and moving them to make vertical parts as I move across the back of my head. Thanks for the suggestion tho! I actually started tying a cheap lightweight floor length mirror or a handheld mirror to one of my studio light stands then I stand between it and vanity mirror. LOL, Definitely makes it a breeze to work on the back.... I wont have to do anything to my base as it grows out because I chose a color that closely matches my natural color. That's the best part of this technique. I have lightened my blonde a bit. Im slowly going platinum/white to eventually get to white/silver. :)

    loved this video. However, as a bleached all over platinum blonde would I go about it in the same way? I have no roots yet. I also think the 6A/7A would turn green - what would you recommend if I needed to insert a fresh fake root? I did a small patch with a demi 7NA - still too greyish/green. Thanx

    • @mandythomas8023
      @mandythomas8023 7 лет назад +2

      It sounds like you might need a pigment filler. Your hair might not be able to evenly absorb all the pigments for a natural looking shade due to the bleach. Its only grabbing the green base color in the ash. Mix in a tiny amount of a warmer shade with your ash. Something with a gold/red base to counteract the green. Hope this helps. xoxo

      Mandy Thomas I have the same problem. I am scared to death of ash tones. I did a light golden brown shadow root. it was the perfect choice

      Wellas ash brown with a demi colour & activating lotion, or colour charm with a10 volume.

    Balayage and shadow root aren't the same thing. Balayage is free painting lightener to achieve extremely natural hilites. Shadow root is what this is and before anyone comes at me, if someone is going to put a how to video up for others to follow correct terminology and technique should be used.

      Ok. I can respect your opinion. How would you go about creating a balayage? I’m assuming you’re a professional.

    • @lorettazepeda9901
      @lorettazepeda9901 6 лет назад +4

      I am a professional hairstylist and she is correct, this is not a balayage. This is more along the lines of a color melt being executed. Either way the results are not bad but it could be blended better if you use two colors to transition to the blonde, then use a wide tooth comb to further blend.

    • @bogiboglin2702

      Technically a balayage is hair painting...painting eat individual section of hair

    As a hair stylist I'm cringing watching you do this I'm very ocd.i wouldn't even do my own roots as my hair is very thick and sits at the start of my butt! Your hair is very patchy.im not being mean towards you it's just from a qualified hairstylist this is wrong on every level. Sorry to have to say that. 😔
