    I used your rainbow lentil soup recipe a couple days ago and I had never tried lentils before but oh my, was it ever delicious ... Only adjustment I made was I added a can of my home canned chicken, used my home canned chicken broth and used a tomato chicken bullion ... It was amazing

    congratulations on your retirement. enjoy your travels. I just finished a load of taco soup, I added all ingredients, cooked hamburger, corn, 3 types of beans, onions, used taco seasoning, ranch seasoning, rotel and tomatoes. I also added beef bouillon . I however did not added an liquids.I put all ingredients in a big bowl and let the flavors combine over night before I put them in the freeze dryer. once freezed dried I put servings in quart jars. all I have to do is add the liquid. I thought I would give it a try minus liquid in freeze dryer and it turned out very good. I have also done it with liquid added and really couldn't tell much difference at all. Plans are in the works for pot pies, and other soups, I have also done a veggie soup and it turned out lovely. God Bless and Merry Christmas to you and your family.

    I tried this as one of my first FD’er meals. It tastes amazing, but my beans ( cooked from dried beans) aren’t rehydrating well. Humph. ( I still love it!)

    • @trailgrazers3690
      @trailgrazers3690  Год назад

      That is great about the chicken, but disappointing about the beans. When I prepare beans for the FD, I cook them from dried beans according to the USDA guidelines--I don't pressure cook them in the Instant Pot, or other pressure pot, just slowly on the stove. Then I FD them and they usually come out fine.

    a Yeti thermos should keep your water hot enough to use with you MREs. I have used 18-hr old water for dehydrated soup. Just be certain to pre-warm the thermos and then add boiling water.

    Wish I had a bowl of hot soup now. Have you thought about one of the car coffee warmer tumblers 14oz ? $17.99 Plug into your car and heat while driving. Many to choose from on Amazon. Just and idea. Or to have hot tea or coffee while on travel. Huge cost saving.
    Thanks for all your hard work. Trust me you will love retirement. Everyday is a weekend.
    Merry Christmas and Safe travels.

    Pam- I love your channel and I’ve ground my own wheat for the first time and also learned to can this summer thanks to you. We just got a freeze dryer and I have two of your cook books along with a few others about meals in jars. My husband is on a strict diet and wanted to have meals ready to go when he travels for work. My question- now that I have a freeze dryer- do you feel there is any big difference between drying and preparing the meals as separate ingredients vs making the soup then freeze drying it? I wondered if one tasted better once reconstituted than the other. The jars make beautiful gifts but for everyday it’s just the two of us and we are fine with Mylar bags building a long term pantry. Any advice? Thank you both

      Congratulations on your new freeze dryer! My personal preference is to FD individual ingredients for the versatility, but I also do complete meals. So either way works well.

    We're on the same page. Retired, camping, trailer, dehydrator, freeze dryer. I started my pressure canning using mostly your recipes. I recently broke my ankle - DON'T do it!!! Maybe 2 more weeks left of no weight bearing on my right foot. Today I'm pigging out on your videos - mostly Trail Grazers. I bought us the 12Volt oven/lunchbox cooker/heater 1 1/2 years ago, along with a 12 volt crock pot, and use them mostly plugged into our Jackery, like your Bluetti. We often have power outages so those have come in handy. I'm looking forward to using Freeze Dried foods when traveling. I took my canned stuff. I bought some of your cookbooks - missed Jim's Birthday sale - Happy Birthday.

    What great recipes & info, Pam. You are always so thorough & informative in your explanations & I'm so grateful. For the FD'd Minestrone, I think I would cook the soup w just water & then REHYDRATE w the Veg broth. Since all the liquid is dissipated by freeze drying, it kind of seems like a waste of a good, organic broth to FD.

    • @trailgrazers3690
      @trailgrazers3690  Год назад +1

      The broth actually is still there. I FD chicken broth and then powder it and it is great!

    Another idea for the hot water is one of the thermoses that holds about a quart of water. I use an electric kettle that holds about the same amount and use it to fill the thermos. It stays very hot for 12 hours or longer and is still warm after 24 hours. And now that we have our wood stove going, I just heat water on it and use that to keep our thermos filled!
