Great review. I like how you were very objective here in terms of calling out the good and bad. I think it's quite surprisingly to hear that the software is the real show here, not the hardware. Def seems like Google have a few tricks up their sleeve to keep someone like you on this phone. Thanks for the review!
I love big phones. Still using my mate 20x. That's the biggest phone i could get. And it's 19/9 ratio. The developers have problem with the form factor. Normal phones are 20/9 nowadays and the foldable are 9/8. I would love to get a foldable one. But they are not taking advantage of the squarish screen. They just try to make us think that the phones are better for multitasking. So that we use 2 rectangular apps on the unfolded, squared screen. They have a solution in search of a problem 😅.
There are so many funky things about this phone that should not make it work. But it's like introducing an entirely new type of phone and does it so many things right. A $1500 price would make it much more enticing.
@@fantasytky28 I'm not trying to dismiss his concern with the heating but I have experienced something similar with my Z Fold 2 outdoors in the heat. After using the phone in 90-degree temps it never wants to cool down. It gets super toasty even when not using it directly in the sun. Plus, Ben likes the phone so much he sad he's going to keep using the it. Which is the point of my comment. Between reviewers and a subreddit dedicated to this phone, I've seen countless people saying there are big drawbacks of this phone but some things make them want to keep using it. The only reason why I haven't bought a Pixel Fold is because my current 2 phones are in great condition still and I don't need to upgrade. It will be Pixel Fold 2 for me.
Spot on Ben. I havent experienced the overheating, and my battery life has been fine I think this is a fine first attempt at a niche product whoch should help fuether develop the US market for foldables and support Devs making their apps work with these foldong screens better. Cheers
I dislike the Fold 4 front display to a level that it is a deal breaker. With no Chinese OEM releasing a global foldable for the UK (apart from Huawei) my only alternative if I want to jump on the foldable train is the Pixel Fold. Maybe, I should wait for the OnePlus, but I am not sure where that will be released or if there will be supply issues (there will be if the Pixel has a two month waiting list). Thankfully I do not game and have an iPhone for videos (do not take many photos). So the Pixel is mainly for my writing as I use Dictation 3-5 hours per day for work. Being able to do it on a larger Pixel Fold than the P7P is added value. So I fall into that niche category that does not care about multitasking, s-pen, performance per se, or a pretty display. I just want the AI/ML magic that Google has. The battery life is easily enough, got over 4 hours using 50% today. In the UK thermals are not an issue for 10 months in a year, and the price was less than half after the watch, great trade-in and 10% credit-back was accounted for. It is not game-changing or the best foldable, but the front display and Google software magic makes it a much better choice versus the Fold 4/5 for me. Thanks for your thoughts 😊
From your list of gadgets I can already tell u made the right decision for yourself. I do hope you leave another comment after using the pixel fold for a while.
I would take this form factor over my ZF4 anyway, but with Samsungs software. Looking forward to the Honor, ZF5 & Oneplus fold reviews when they drop. Keep up the great work and thank you for the uploads.
Just got mine yesterday so far nice loving it so far. I just came back from Vegas. My Z Fold 3 did hot there but I'm not having a heat problem love how the battery is working it can go all day only thing is charges a little slower than my Z Fold 3 but the battery is bigger.
I just bought this phone and I agree with the warming of the phone, it gets hot for no reason. The form factor is great! For a gen 1 design they did really well. Waiting for developers to catch up
I'll NEVER get another Pixel device again after my experience with the Pixel 7 pro. The overheating, randomly freezing then turning off, poor battery, poor display (horrible in sunlight). My biggest issue that doesn't get mentioned, THE ONE dedicated volume rocker 🤦. You can't multitask with ONE set of volume controls, that's dog water. Glad i went back to my LG v60, a true multitasking beast.
I have it and agree with everything here... but also have always missed 16:9 phones and was sorta miffed they did away with things like home button and speaker cam areas to go full screen and not just make sorta more square full screen devices as stuff like notification panel is way easier to reach. This device gets me that and also opens in landscape as a result. Basically going to be hard to consider tall narrow foldable after trying this even if its more traditional phone aspect ratio and better than the Samsung.
Still having huge reservation about pixel fold landscape screen. 1. Most apps we used are portrait apps which don't scale properly to full landscape screen. With pixel fold there is the hassle of needing to rotate the screen to portrait if you don't want half the screen area being wasted. Not to mention, the need to rotate again to close the fold. 2. Even those apps with (multi-column) landscape view support are not always optimum either as the fold is not a 10 inch tablet. These landscape optimized apps use half the (short) screen to display main content (which is less than what you get on a candy bar phone). Even the RUclips app is better in portrait. It gives you a big size video on the top half and you can read comments below. In landscape view, video size is much smaller unless you go into fullscreen (which means you can't see comments at the same time). 3. When pixel fold screen is rotated to portrait (likely usage scenario), having the crease on the horizontal is way MORE distracting than on vertical. When vertical content constantly scrolls over the horizontal crease you will see the waviness/distortion which makes you feels like you gonna get seasick. 4. Even multi-window split view is worse than zfold. After deducting the status bar and app header and bottom bars, pixel fold has a short vertical area for content. In conclusion, Pixel fold sacrifices the inner screen and everything else for a slightly better cover screen usage.
Benny Boom, what's good? I'm glad you're well, what's your thoughts on the LCD panel sphere out there in Vegas if you saw it? I'm surprised you didn't do a review on it or did you 👀?.
Price, inferior hardware, slow charging speed is something i don't feel like going for pixel fold.. Thanks Ben for the honest review! And most importantly it's not even available in my country ! Crap... so we still stuck with the Samsung fold !
Thank you for this review. Overheating is a major issue, chip processors is another big factor. Thus so far I will not be getting this device. Will wait on the Honor Magic V2.
Yeah for me the best about this device is that it will hopefully finally get developers to improve app optimization for foldables. Otherwise it´s not impressive at all. The foldables to get are the Huawei mate x3 and the soon to be release honor magic v2 (I still prever the Huawei because it will definitely have a better optical zoom camera, is more durable than any device and is waterproof).
You feel about the fold the same exact way i do about the pixel 7 pro vs the galaxy s22 ultra. objectively the s22 ultra is superior in every way. but the pixel 7 pro ended up the one i kept. why? SOFTWARE!! hardware isn't everything. it almost never is.
As u just headlined we all should'nt like this pixel fold but somehow i keep using it over the z fold 5. I'll keep them both for a little while but the outer screen & pure android is just amazing. I am running android 14 beta and no heating issues so far! Have u also tried 14beta?
You've just described the overall phone industry in a nutshell. In the real world, most people are willing to put up with a lower spec phone, provided there are software smarts that help 'prop up' the overall experience. However, saying that, I could never advise someone to out and spend hundreds less on a Find N2 or Mate X3 or Mix Fold 2, which will have crippled Chinese software, just because the hardware might be better. So I think there are different levels of what makes a great device.
@@bensgadgetreviews Fair enough Ben but this is where you and Mr Mobile differ. He knows it isn't about 'one-upping' in terms of specs, which your vids concentrate on. It NEEDS Google to add software smarts to engage the user and make it a better experience and entice devs - no Chinese manufacture can achieve this alone or together.
I would really want to see a chinese foldable with the form factor of the Pixel Fold. I find the more square-ish form factor to be much more comfortable overall, but the hardware Google has is just not there. I think Google made excellent design decisions, with a few caveats (like no pen support), but the hardware for them is just not up to par with the hardware chinese manufacturers can deliver.
Good review, fair and balanced. The pixel fold ain't for me. The z fold is t really either but it would be what I choose if I was to get one because I'm more of a power user and like the better multitasking and processing power.

I currently own a Pixel 7 Pro (camera, general phone) and a Surface Duo (Media, etc). Ideally, I'd love to own the Fold, which would replace both my current devices. However, I couldn't trust it, especially for the insane price. Oh well. A Surface Duo 3 would be great.
1. Value is relative. It ISN'T tied to the cheapest price or the most bang for the buck product. 2. $1,800 for any foldable phone isn't the problem. The problem is what you DON'T get for that price. The Fold could actually could 3 apps at once in a floating window if it's a video playing of course. 😊 I rather get the Z Fold series of phones as I could float any app I want plus have one side split. I do feel like they need to change the form factor asap tho as a wider outer screen is perferred. Now if you like using the iPhone mini then you would love it but then again iPhone mini peeps most likely won't be interested in the Z Fold to begin with. I got the Fold for a few days now. I was liking it at first but now have mix feelings about it as it feels very limited which I should've expected since it's a Pixel device as I currently have the P7P as well. I like Samsung devices could they just let you know so much more including DeX and this is why I still have my S22U around as well. If I don't keep my Fold then I will be just picking up the Z Fold 5 or waiting for the Z Fold 6. I probably won't be interested in the Pixel Fold again until at least the Fold 3. Hopefully they will start using the SD chips again.
I shouldn't like this phone either, but I definitely prefer this form factor so much more over the z fold. I had the z fold 5 for a few days and returned it. For me, the only Samsung that I need is my S23 Ultra. For the price, I would have loved a better chip in this phone. I'm pretty bummed that the OnePlus is delayed and so I'll probably get a pixel fold to hold me over lol
These things are actually production ready devices for Android 14 testing and google publicly release it xD other brands have much better foldable, you are right 👍
I live in a north African country, and the weather here is like 35° to 39° Celsius! And the phone is always hot even without using it! Tensor G2 is the worst CPU i have ever used. The Pixel 4 XL is way cooler than the Pixel 7 Pro.
Mine is never warm let alone hot. Mind you I live in the UK so 20-25c in the summer normally. Maybe that is why they never released it in Africa, or it could be that the modem is not optimised for your region so it does not work well. This was only officially released in a few countries and I would never recommend buying it outside those restrictions.
@@andyH_England same thing happens in the winter bro! Compared to my friends smartphones, the Pixel 7 Pro is the hottest. By the way, people in the United States have the same temperature as in Algeria, and they have the same issues. Tensor is still bad. Let's be honest.
Samsung Foundry is really letting down Google/Samsung Exynos. Hopefully they can catch up with 3nm, but unfortunately that's probably not until 2024-25
Google has already not renewed their contract with Samsung Fabs and will move to TSMC in 2025 as Qualcomm did this year. Samsung Fabs have been a letdown but hopefully they will get their act together sooner than later.
Its basically a foldable pixel 7A but costs $1800 and if i import the 512gb to Canada over $3500 CAN....hard pass in that for such mediocre hardware. Absolutely not worth that price, my 256gb pixel 7 pro was like $1500 CAN and that was reasonable.
The Pixel 7a does not have a periscope camera, so no idea why people think the cameras are the same? By the way, the Pixel 7a has a better primary camera than many phones priced 2X or more, so that is not bad. As for the Tensor 2, it is not the best and no one is defending it, so if you feel you need more power then you should move on. For the vast majority the chips used now are now good enough, but yes, if you are a spec-chaser then the Pixel Fold will not be for you.
What you are talking regarding the Google Tensor G2 is being "smart", has almost nothing to do with said processor, but actually with Google integrated software and stock android experience. It's the same reason why if you install, say... the GCam on a Xiaomi, it blows your mind how much the pictures improve rather than using the stock camera of said Xiaomi. Google is by no means the best at delivering hardware, but it is one of the best, if not the best at software. So, pretty much, while other makers may have better hardwares, their softwares doesn't exploit their full capacities, while Google software does exploits their hardware capacities, to level up the game up to its rivals. So, all makers play balancing tech and raw force in their own way, and Google in particular chooses to rely more on its tech than on its raw force.
I'm never going to choose worse cameras, worse battery, worse charging speeds and more weight for a bendy screen, but if I did, it would be the Pixel Fold.

What is the guitar hero game at 1:31 ?
Samsung Foundry is really letting down Google/Samsung Exynos. Hopefully they can catch up with 3nm, but unfortunately that's probably not until 2024-25
But who cares. Pixel users literally supporting the phone the overheating and the lousy battery
Google has already not renewed their contract with Samsung Fabs and will move to TSMC in 2025 as Qualcomm did this year. Samsung Fabs have been a letdown but hopefully they will get their act together sooner than later.
Interesting way to look at it 🤔
Pixel camera, software and Tensor tricks make every other phone overpriced IMO.
Disagree
Disclaimer this phone is only $900 in the US if you go to the carriers
That's not how it works. You pay even more buying from a carrier
Yeah the music id is cool although it has a mind of its own and sometimes doesn't do it.
The microphone is always on it makes the phone stay hot even tho you're not using it 😅
any of the chinese made foldables is better than this.
Terminal 3 of Beijing Airport is very beautiful
I spot another zuyoni fan 👀
Great device, but it's EIGHTEEN HUNDRED dollars.
Ideal foldable phone in my opinion: mate x3 hardware + pixel folx software
I waiting on the Honor Magic V2
There is no sign that will be getting a global release.
I think the Pixel Fold was designed to be non-offensive, especially to the US market, yet the price is offensive
What does that even mean?
@@ChrisJohannsen Designed to be a simple to use device for first time people with ok enough performance/battery/camera
The black border of the screen can land on Boeing 747.
Good video, Definetly try out the iOS 17 beta, the voice typing blew my mind. Seems to recognise better than pixel fold did for me
Yes, I was shocked as well. A massive improvement for Apple and now much closer to Google dictation. Samsung's is by far the worst, almost unusable.
What about at the great ATT deal at 900 dollars? keeper
Yeah that's a good deal
Pls can someone tell me the manga app your using
It's just Amazon Kindle
@@bensgadgetreviews oh you have a Kindle app and you downloaded the manga am.i correct
The phone just is too wide to use one handed on the MTR or something. Which is unfortunate because its great for reading manga lol
The bezels for the inside screen is what kills it for me.😢
Yes. Looks like an old prototype.
Nice airport
Hi ben i think the real game changer its coming...honor vs2...
OPPO Find N2 is way better
No global release so for the west not relevant.
from quality to design ,it's a ow value ,poor performance phone .. just before it's google ,it's not necessary good
I'm keeping it because it's the closest I'm getting to a Surface Duo 3.
I'm never going to choose worse cameras, worse battery, worse charging speeds and more weight for a bendy screen, but if I did, it would be the Pixel Fold.
You forget worse overheating in 2023
i pay 1000
iPhone is heavy
