Well, no. 2 isn't a common thing in Germany. Leaving a dinner table with a whole group during the main course... This might be happen in Berlin but definitely not all over Germany. Never ever experienced this kind of behaviour.
Same here, it baffling to me that she encountered this so often. If someone wants to smoke they usually do it while waiting for the food, not during the meal.
Especially not in the middle of dinner. Noone interrupts dinner for a smoke and then returns to continue eating. This has to be a misconception. Going for a smoke after eating is a pretty common thing though. And if you're in a group of smokers, they might all leave at once, which seem to me as the least surprising thing.
I'm german..... and i've never been eating at a restaurant, just to see the whole table disappear for a smoke... especcially in the middle of a dinner ;-)
@sequoia 3312 I havent seen that a full table is leaving, yet I have experienced for example, my Mom, Dad and Aunt going for a smoke leaving me there. Its the same thing. We have a lot of smokers in our family so it happens quite often. It disgusts me - but it happens.

3vr1m im not saying that Darmstadt is more expensive than Munich but it is on the top ten list of most expensive cities if you talk about rent. You’re right, Munich is pretty damn expensive with 17,56 € per squaremeter. But still Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Mainz and yes, even Darmstadt are up there. However I personally believe that looking at rent in cities is problematic. Comparing smaller districts would be more insightful. For example Ditzingen near Stuttgart has a significantly higher rent cost than Stuttgart. I didn’t want to say that Munich isn’t expensive or that Darmstadt is more expensive but rather that Munich can be expected to be expensive, is a big city. But Darmstadt is one of the smaller cities in Germany but still has incredibly high rent costs. Sorry for the confusion
thisisgoddi I agree Darmstadt is one of the more expensive cities (according to the internet, the average rent is 11,77€/square meter), but I guess it also always depends on where you want to live in the city (which area). Hamburg as an example, the average rent is (according to the same page) 13,26€, but it can increase drastically when you’re renting a flat in the Altstadt, which can be up to 21,35€/square meter.
1. Rent for an apartment can be much higher than 10€ per m² and that is only the so called "cold rent" which means that electricity, water, heating, phone, cable TV and maintenance cost (trash removal, cleaning, gardening) will be on top. It's quite normal, that people in Germany spend 35-50% of there netto income (after tax ) for the rent. Not that cheap and of course except the kitchen, you rent empty rooms without any furniture. 2. That an entire company leaves the table at a restaurant for a smoke break during dinner is very rare. I have never experienced that and I'm a 56 year old local. 3. Paying with your credit card at the gas pump only works for US citizens who have a US credit card and a home ZIP code. As a tourist, even with 2 valid platinum cards (Master + Visa) but without a resident zip code, I had to enter the shop, guess how much $$ my fill would be, get my card charged for that amount, than I could start pumping gas. If I underestimated the needed amount for a complete fill, I have to do that again, if I estimated to much, I had to get back to the store, to get the overpaid $$ transferred back to my credit card. Nowhere could I pump first and pay later at the shop, because they obviously think that every customer is a possible gas thief who makes a run without paying. Nice if you live there, but a stone age system if you are a tourist. 4. To find prostitution in the US is not that hard, since they just cover it up as massage parlors or escort services (happy endings guaranteed). Even open street prostitution can easy be found in big city's like L.A. or San Francisco. I have never found more prudish and hypocrite people as in the US, sorry to say that. Sex as as normal part of live in the US, ha ha, but the whole nation goes berserk if a nipple is shown on TV for a split second? LOL A country, where a mixed sauna is automatically considered as a brothel or a swinger club? Where a commercial for a bra is not shown on TV, but is the biggest producer of porn movies world wide? Where you can be arrested if you change your wet swim trunks under a wrapped around towel on a public beach? Regarding sex, the US is rely screwed up form a European point of view.
100% agree especially about the “sex” view and nudity. I sold video games to a mother and asked her point blank why she would let her 10 year old son play a game where he would be witnessing someone’s head being blown off and forced to torture someone over a game that had a warning of mild nudity... She couldn’t answer me.
I tell you why germans have to pay their gas into the store - you earn very poor money by selling gas. But selling drinks and items is how the gasoline stations make their profit
I was going to write the exact same thing. Gas stations don't make a lot from gas. They NEED you to come inside and maybe buy something else. That's also why the card pay option - on gas stations that have one - are only active while the gas station "shop" is closed.
Ah and btw someone should tell Kelly that complaining about not being able to name your child like crazy in germany in one video doesn't fit to being shocked about "fuck" isn't censored and smoking is popular in the other.
This is exactly what my German husband explained to me when I was freaking out about standing in line to pay for gas. But...seriously - it's 8 BUCKS A GALLON!
Yeah ... I never had a culture shock in an other culture, because before I visit a country with an other culture I inform myself about this culture ... xD
I never saw people interrupt the dinner for a smoke in germany. I don't like iPhone, because I hate being restricted. And why should I pay for iPhone, when there are lots of better phones with a lower price.
And just thinking of, no wifi, no internet. And then your bud want to send you a picture or something... so that leaves Bluetooth.. if you're having an iphone and the other an android it wouldn't work. (This case happened 4 years ago, dont know if it's the same today) And then you need for every thin an extra...(if you have an iphone) extra port for aux, extra port for charging, extra Bluetooth radio with the function to connect with iphones... So at least you're not just paying 1.000€ for the iphone, you're paying extra for everything . That leaves you maybe by 2000€
I witnessed a bunch of smoke breakes in Germany. It's not at all common, but happens if pretty much everyone is a smoker and there is no warm food on the table anymore.
Yeah, same. I can charge basically everywhere since all chargers are the same, except for Iphones. I can watch every video I am sent, Iphone users never can see mine and more. I had a windows phone before, and I loved it. All the apps were deletable (unlike android or apple) so now with my android I have a million unused apps taking up memory space. Then again, I can just insert a new SD-card (unlike Iphones)and triple the memory space (or much more, depending on the SD-card.) It's just more convient and user friendly.
I thought the most shocking thing would be seing 16 year old people drinking Beer because in some states in America you are allowed to drink alcohole at the age of 21
#3 While you see the iPhone as a luxury good and associate positive things with it and their owner, I see it as an overpriced and technically behind product. Therefor my initial assumption is that the owner is not that smart until proven otherwise.
Well, for one, there's no bloatware on IPhones. I really hated those useless apps that would only eat up my storage. I also like my display to be clean and minimalistic. Like, why would I want an icon that shows that I switched off automatic downloads when I'm not connected via W-Lan? Then again, I can't take anyone serious who gets the newest iPhone OR Samsung etc just because it's new.
@@Imnottrainedforthis Hmm, wasn't it on the iPhone where you couldn't remove icons from the home screen? There are obviously arguments for the iPhone but picking this?
@@outlucked I juat noticed how the icon bar of a coworker was so much more crowded than mine. Like, an icon because you switched something OFF seemed ridiculous. Generally, I just like its simplicity and design. but I don't really care about any brand as such.
iOS and Android is just personal preference. Has nothing to do with being smart. I don't think it is smart to buy a phone every two years and pay 1000bucks for it. Explain to me what you mean with technically behind. I think in general germans just don't see a smartphone as a luxury item and they always want their best for their money, which is imo a really subjective topic. Because your best isn't necessarily my best.
Ist es nicht sogar in Ost-Berlin billiger als im Westen wegen der DDR? So kommt es mir immer vor und ja, Berlin kann man für Mietpreise vergleichen schlecht nehmen
My thoghts about thse: 1. The talk about 10€ per square meter is problematic. The rule of thumb in Germany is that the rent should not exceed 30 percent of the income after tax, pension payments and health care. Nowadays, it often exceeds 40 percent, and in some cities like Munich, it is higher than most people earn. If I interpolate what you said, then the rent for that Washington appartment exceed 2150 USD, which is more than the average income in Germany. 2. I have never seen such a smoke break as you described. This is completely uncommon in restaurants, and in bars only some of the poeple leave the table. 3. Android is preferred because of better value, iPhones are too expensive. Nowadays, Samsung is going down the same route nad becoming increasingly less popular. A lot of people here like to spend about 300-400 EUR for a smart phone, not more. Also, a lot of people dislike the vendor lock-in and silly limitations like not being able to directly access files on the phone when it is connected to a PC. 4. You are right about German gas stations. They are taking over the role of convenience stores over here and make almost no profit from the gas itself. 5. Swearing is a part of everybody's life, so it's unnatural to remove it from the media. Also, sometimes people just don't care or they don't even understand. Have a look at this classic commercial form the Netherlands: ruclips.net/video/7nQ9lmriWOc/видео.html 6. That singing along depends. But sure, American music is played all the time. And british music. And english language music from Sweden. And, and, and... 7. Making prostitution legal is important to ensure social security for sex workers. Also, why waive the opportunity to collect takes for these businesses?
You´re completely right ! My only "shock" was to see, what Kelly shocked in Germany ... especially her feeling of the numbers of smoking in Germany. I never smoked, in my family nobody smokes and the only person I remember smoking is the cowboy from the Marlboro commercial... Apple and Android are both american products - so why the "culture shock"...???
Additional to 1.: There are cheap prices, for example for food, because we have one of the biggest low income sectors in Europe, when it comes to employment (ruclips.net/video/Uxs0asqdSAk/видео.html). Now this also explains why the rents are high and getting higher from the (average) German's point of view, because they spend like 30 to 70 % of their income for these rents!
I totally agree with everything listed above. Maybe as a little addition: to #2 just like a lot people who already commented on this, I never experienced this kind of smoking break. Usually everyone finishes their food before leaving for a cigarette, sometimes taking a drink with them, but never standing up in the middle of dinner, leaving the food on the table. To #4: There is a security aspect to this, too. Having people come into the station gives both sides control over the act of payment. Aside from that, yes, almost everyone going in will buy something. Even if it is only a snack, something to drink or some chewing gum. To #5: English swear-words aren't removed from media as it is a foreign language and radio stations as well as television try to honor the original content without meddling with it. You will hear German swear words being censored. Making thema radio edit, too. There is a common rule in media in Germany to only play the uncensored versions on TV or radio after 10pm, as the audience should be old enough to understand or deal with them. The situation should be just like in the US. If I remember correctly, they censor the english swear words, but none of the foreign languages. I even came across a pub in LA which seemed to make it a fun game to put as many German curse words on the menu as possible. To #6: the world of German music just seems a little limited, so everyone try to seek music to their liking in the variety of world music. USA being the biggest musical provider will have the most possibilities for everyone. Even German musicians try to sing in english to maybe be invited on a tour in North America.
I've seen those smoke breaks. However not so common while there is still leftovers from the meal. Usually after eating and while staying for drinks. Completely Empty tables have been a common sight for me when I was younger. Since less and less people are smoking, it becomes more common to see 1 or 2 people staying at the table. Also for the brothels. They aren't as accepted as it might seem. Whenever a new one opens in a small town, there is a lot of countermovement. People are afraid of the people running those places. And while yes, legalising them is needed to ensure social security for the sex workers, it also makes it even harder to take down people who are forcing others into this kind of work, I think. Very complex if you ask me and I am not really decided for myself if I think brothels being legal in Germany is a good thing or not.
4. I am shocked she did not notice that she is lured into a shop. Never bought a chewing gum there? 5. Germans are a bit special in this even compared to the rest of Europe, though. Not the word she bleeped out, that is hardly noteworthy if you are not overly prudish. But Germans do have a quirky fascination with errr, the waste products of biological bodies. And not just Knorkator, or Rammstein. 6. Meh, we sing along in all languages we speak, and those we do not speak, as well. My fave is listening to people singing along in Finnish. You know, all that cool Finnish metal. But if they need to feel shpeshul when we know their music, be our guests. We are just not so insecure that we bother noticing such things. Maybe she should compare it with folks knowing Rammstein texts by heart, and German is not exactly a language spoken around the globe. Which reminds me of a crime of my parents: I do not think I will ever forget the text of "voulez vous couchez avec moi, ce soir". In some areas you can still hear that song to this day, including the elderly folks singing along. I guess "voulez vous *bleep* avec moi" just doesn't cut it, so I figure no one would ever be tempted to sing along with such "pop culture" over there.

I respect your opinion, but I think in the world right now, the selective censorship of profanity is one of the most justifiable forms of limiting free speech. There are many things that it is not socially acceptable to say that are much more true and more valuable to humanity than "f***".
@@Albatrosspro1 so "there are worse instances of censorship" is an argument to perpetuate it in this instance? As a german I have never experienced any of those smoking breaks during meals anywhere and I've even worked as a waiter before ... I'm pretty sure the places I eat at wouldn't just let everyone from the table get up and leave either without paying. That sounds super random to me and germans would be the first to frown upon such rude behaviour, if it were a common thing to happen. Also I don't smoke and I rarely know anyone who does.
Regarding the whole iPhone issue: in Germany you have quite a lot of people who are rather critical of large companies like Google (or ABC as they are now called, I think?), facebook or Apple, because of their tendency to create all-encompassing, more or less closed and proprietary systems (speaking of both hardware and/or services). This business model is frowned upon as it is seen as some kind of "digital totality", which in itself carries the seed of a potential "digital totalitarianism", as in big companies watching, evaluating and in the end controlling every one of our digital footsteps. But you are also right in your vid, as often people state that they think that iPhones are "form over function" stuff that only works well because of the closed, proprietary nature of the Apple/iOS world, while being way overpriced when looked at as a simple piece of technology. People who prefer using Apple products are often refered to as "Apple disciples", meaning that they are drivenby some digital lifestyle cult instead of rational consideration.
And if you compare that, you'd realize that we in Germany are better off than the US. Wisdom teeth removal costs nothing Bc of insurance. Google how much the removal is in the US 😂 😂
Yes, and also additional to the taxes: There are cheap prices, for example for food, because we have one of the biggest low income sectors in Europe, when it comes to employment (ruclips.net/video/Uxs0asqdSAk/видео.html). Now this also explains why the rents are high and getting higher from the (average) German's point of view, because they spend like 30 to 70 % of their income for these rents! Speaking for food prices there is not also overproduction ( a surplus in agricultural products, like in many "highly developed" countries with highly industrial agriculture ), but also cartell-like / monopolistic strutures in the companies owning the ruling supermarket and discounter chains, so they just can make up these prices and have the power to force these low prices on the local farmers, as well as affecting the income of the agricultural workers through it. Those are mainly from Romania and fewer and fewer from Poland ( who don't get "Mindestlohn" - minimum wage, but it's speial arrangement in the law that the farmers are allowed to pay under minimum wage and only must rise it slowy ever year to reach that wage somewhen next decade ). This power also affects the prices of imported food as well, mainly from Spain / Italy when it comes to vegetables, where the working conditions of migrants from mainly Africa are much worse and almost slave-like. To some degree the supermarket companies can use the cheap (vegetable) imports of these countries to increase pressure on local (conventional) farmers. Cheap imports, -> because the environment is destroyed (water crisis in Almería, Spain, external costs that are not included in the food prices for the consumer in Germany), and, -> because the workers are cheap(er) there. And in many cases THE MAFIA enforces these working situations there ( threatening workers and organising illegal immigration). Is it the same in the USA with Mexico and the Mexicans? Linux and Microsoft don't care where you install their OS - but for OSX you'll have to buy Apple? Keep it then. Plus I prefer stuff that I can tinker with myself - root it, change it, develop my own stuff for it on any device I chose to use and with any IDE I prefer - not being bound to some Apple SDK and their license restrictions. Of course the price is part of this too - I don't see the point in paying three or more times the money for a device that does less for me. Final reason: I don't really like their design that much and they only have "this one product line" - there is so much more diversity with Android devices, so I can find something that really suits me. To get cocky: yeah, Android scores higher in Germany - because we compare before we buy and we don't care about how much money someone else _thinks_ we have :p

the wall-in provides a sane level of app quality and security. whereas Google has completely lost control of that. as a consequence Google has to do a restart of Android.
My reason for having Android was the walled garden of Apple. Developers have to pay a lot to be able to develop for it, Mac only! There are several grass-roots apps indispensable for me, which are just not available for iOS.
@@AdrianoCROST I was a loyal to Apple for 8 years and it honestly wasn't that fast now that I'm looking back, I switched to Android recently from an iPhone 10 to a Samsung S9, Android is alot faster imo, I also experienced a better quality on videos and camera, and I have a headphone jack finally lol. Now it may just be that Samsung is overall better and faster than apple(In my experience from switching), but i can't speak for other android companies, but Android does update their hardware alot more frequently compared to Apple which is probably why I experience much higher performance from my Samsung phone. Apple used to be good, but it just kinda has fallen in terms of quality over the years. If apple does catch up, I would be happy to switch back again. Edit: I don't get your statement about android just being an OS, iPhone is also an OS. OS means operating system, the iOS just means the operating system is apple.
both Android and iOS have their points. I actually have both, being a Unix nerd, I was happy to finally see Linux based portables after so many false starts. the difference and in the case of Android, the problem, is the exosystem. The walled garden, if you like.Where Apple kept the garden neat and tidy, but would not cater to absolutely every tree or fruit taste, Google over the years simply lost control. the one Android garden does not exist, every manufacturer has its own, that still is connected to the main garden, but grows additional strange fruit (manufacturer specific apps and services). if you look closely, you‘ll find that Samsung locks you in just as Apple does. and every manufacturer has its own maintenance and release policy. I have 5 android tabs and only one of them can be updated to a sufficiently recent version of Android... meaning most of my devices are not sufficiently maintained to be safe to use with personal or otherwise sensitive data. Apple otoh normally gives you relevant udates rather quickly, but if you’re device is over 5 years old, you will. not receive the latest OS, often because the hardware has moved on. so, if walled garden, it has to be one that is kept. And yes, Android is a walled garden, too. The main difference is that Google doesn‘t exert the necessary control to make manufacturers keep their OS releases in line and secure, and allows Chinese Gardens where you really can‘t be sure if the Duck with Flied Lies is fresh and that the Lychees aren’t bugged.
She must have travelled around Germany. And it doesn't surprised me because Germans hardly follow trends, they create theirs or be very late in the game. They're the strangest Westerners.
@@Nele-vg7js No, she does not. She's simply sharing her own experiences. Of course she's generalizing a bit - just like Germans do, when they say Americans love their weapons. A lot do - but most definitely not all of them.
Brothels are legal, because that was the best way to stop exploitation. Sex-workers, as we call them, get access to special medical monitoring, get social care and in return pay taxes. They can sue costumers and get statutory help in case of exploitation. So - no pimps, all the money goes directly to the worker. That all may seem disreputable, but you simply has to face the facts, that you can't thwart prostitution. And i think this typical german, to have a legal practical framework even for things, everyone else would rather like to vilify and in consequence scrap from the political agenda .
Eh, it's not like it's really working to protect prostitutes. There's a reason Germany is called the brothel of Europe. Exploitation is still very real. Including human trafficking for sex work. Just banning it won't work, as the US shows, but the way we regulate prostitution isn't working out so well either. We need a better system still.
All that aside, why should prostitution even be illegal? A crime is any act that damages another person or the general public. With prostitution, nobody is harmed. Moral outrage is not a good reason to outlaw something. It's the same logic why gay sex should not be illegal.
There is no perfect solution, especially when the subject of matter is already a moral offside to start with. Legalizing prostitution was a delicate matter here in germany, and we did a very rational approach. In the end the pros beat moral objections. That germany became the brothel of europe is follow-up, that also has it pros and cons. With a legal status and a protective framework sex-work became lucrative for foreign nationals. On the first glance this may look like a failure, but basically this has drained women exploitation beyond our borders. I have just read in the Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution_in_Germany) that you even may get visas for sex-working. Summarized, we did a very sensible approach to a scorned subject, and it had an impact how other countries see us. But i see it as walking an high road out of pure reasoning. And that's why i like it as part of the german culture.
There may not be a pimp, but usually prostitutes have to rent their room for - the one site I checked out - a pretty hefty daily or weekly sum. But I guess it's better that way than having to work a street corner.
@@flashnfantasy As far as I know, female and male prostitution has always been legal in post-war West Germany. There were alterations over the years concerning its status, tax and welfare implications, but not its legality as such. The only kind of prostitution being illegal was male to male, and that was legalised at the same time gay sex became legal in 1969.
The main reason for android over iPhone are the many more options. How can this even be a question?! It's not the price, it's that you can extent your storage if you want, save things on the phone and not only in the cloud, use all kinds of headphones etc.
smoking isnt really socially accepted in germany either except by other smokers and point 3 is completely false firstly whatsapp is avalible on all phones secondly the reason everyone uses it is that it replaced the text message because using whatsapp is faster easier and free
Well not really free… YOU pay with all your personal data and literally let Facebook read and store EVERYTHING you send and receive (and that price is toooo high). Also… technically the message service is not free either. You pay for the data service instead of the price for every single message like with SMS or MMS. And people just use whatsapp because they are too lazy to switch to better and more secure solutions but they all got used to what's app too much…

To me, as a german, "fuck" does not feel as strong as our german analogue. Perhaps it is because one can never really understand how this word is received by a native speaker. To me, it is basically a "light" version, perhaps even a real german word with its own meaning by now. We use our own "native" word a lot more sparingly (as demonstrated by the fact that i dont even write it here ;-) ). It feels like that we somehow managed to find a way to still say this word, without saying it.
"Fuck" ist in Deutschland eher weniger benutzt, da unsere Art von Schimpfwörtern eher auf Kot fokussiert ist. In Amerika ist es eher sexuell gerichtet z.B. "dickhead"
ja das liegt an unserem anderen Fokus von Tabus. Bei uns ist Sex normal, aber Scheiße ist schmutzig, also haben viele Schimpfwörter mit scheisse oder Ärschen zu tun.
You're right, "fuck" serves as a kind of everyday swear word in German, at least to me. Whenever I (or another person) mess/-es something up (badly) I'm like "oooh fuck." When I'm kinda surprised but angry I say "feck!" like when I tried something in a video game and it didn't work. When a friend tells me a sad story I often go like "fuuuuck..." If a machine doesn't work as I want it to I am like "FVCKING SCHEISS *add a Gerät in there (PC! Handy!) MACH WAS DU SOLLST!" and sometimes even add a "for feck's sake" to it. Well, I'm a german who moved to the US and paying right at the gas pump for your gas was sort of a reverse culture shock for me XD Ok, more like it was part of the culture shock. I think the main reason for the US having to make it as efficient and quick as possible is that cars have a more prominent role in the US. Of course in germany most people own a car and there is quite a lot of traffic, but there are also a lot of people still using public transportation, which is not really an option in most places in the US, especially outside the cities, mostly because of how far everything is spread out. So I think Germany has less need for being being able to do everything from your car, because cars overall have a different value. I for example had a drivers license ever since I was able to get one, but I never had a car in Germany, because I was able to get everywhere by train, bus or on foot. I considered a car a waste of space and money, because I was able to do without one just fine and I lived in a small town as well as a city in germany. Since I moved to the US I can't really do without a car anymore, I wouldn't be able to get anywhere really. Just my 2 cents on the matter...
I completely agree with your reasoning. I’m just thinking of the insanity that would ensue at US gas stations if everyone had to go inside and pay. The lines would be insanely long haha

There are some gas stations were you can pay at the pump. But they are rare. And in Germany the people at the gas station make the most money with the shop, not with the fuel, so they want you to come in and buy some other stuff too. The money from the gas goes to the big company behind the station like Shell or Aral, or what ever and in form of taxes to the government.
@@DropkickNation Es ist nunmal so, dass Samsung weniger kostet, und genau soviel leistet wie ein Iphone. Wenn du ein Iphone kaufst, bezahlst du eigentlich nicht für Leistung, sondern für den Namen.
Actually, I think not paying at the pump has nothing to do with customers' needs but rather with the shop operators. Gas stations usually don't make much money by selling gas (their prices are dictated by the oil companies), but rather with the shop attached to the gas station. So they require drivers to come inside in the hope of them buying something in the store.
#3: The popularity of the iPhone in the USA is probably also because it's seen as a more American phone than Android which is often associated with Samsung. Also, Apple invests huge amounts of money into advertising and marketing which is way more prominent in the USA. Also, Germans seem to be more interested in open software platforms and against the closed system of Apple's iOS and its iTunes store. I can't really see an iPhone as more of a luxury item than a similarly capable Android phone, even though the iPhones are typically much more expensive. Probably that was true seven or more years ago, but not in recent years.
Agreed. Of course, low price can be an advantage, but I usually do an extensive research before buying a new phone as I want to get 1. the biggest bang for the buck and 2. the best feature set with regard to my requirements and usage profile. Never in my research the iPhone offered any USP I really wanted. (+ No adapters needed. :D)
Why the heck should iPhones be so popular in Germany as they are in the US? I don’t see any reasonable reason for that. Apple is obviously an American brand, Americans buy American phones and cars, like Germans buy German washing machines and cars, French buy French cars, Italians buy Italian cars.. why should this be that surprising?
@@GlenDevan1970 well, android is made by Google. So, it's American. If we are talking about hardware, iPhones are pretty Asian, too. They are build by Foxconn, which is as non-American as a company can be.
Number 3 is true, actually. All of my friends prefer Android, because Apple simply is going insane with their pricing. In Germany, nearly everyone goes for the value per Euro "rating". Not simply because "it's cool"

The gas station thing is the same in a lot of countries; It's the business model; the people who run the gas stations dont make much or any money from fuel sales and just use them to get potential customers into what is essentially a convenience store. I think the fuel companies pay the capital costs or lease the floor space or something. If you go to a supermarket which sells fuel this doesn't apply, so you can pay at the pump.

#7 We Germans are like "I don't care what you do if you don't hurt or disturb somebody, if you want to go to a brothel then go, if you want to work in a brothel do it I don't care" this is my opinion on this topic.
I'd go a step further and say that the legalisation of prostitution has nothing but benefits. First is that this gives the prostitutes legal protection, improving their work conditions drastically. Second it helps to weed out human trafficking. Third it makes prostitution a regular occupation which means incometax for the state. And last but not least, regulations on prostitution also protect the prostitutes customers.
It's simply lying to say legalization has benefits only it actually made Germany the brothel of Europe and its no coincidence that most prostitutes are foreign women and a lot of prostitutes have addiction and psychological health issues. Pimps exploit vulnerable women from abroad who don't have the ressources to get help. Human trafficking and forced prostitution is a big problem in Germany. While pimping is still technically illegal the legalization of prostitution makes is way easier for pimps to exploit women. As long as the woman who is usually too afraid to speak up doesn't admit she has a pimp it is not possible to stop sex trafficking and of course the johns don't care at all. There are plenty of studies where johns admit the prostitutes they are visiting might be forced but they still decide to go on exploiting them. I'm positive that Germany will adapt the Nordic model (buying sex is outlawed while offering it is not) somewhere in the future to help protect victims of sex trafficking.
@@AnimalEmancipation "germany is the brothel of europe" Is that supposed to be an argument? Most prostitutes being foreign women, so what? As in "Prostitutes have a higher chance of getting health or addiction problems"? As for the women being too afraid to speak up, yes that is a problem. It's the same problem with domestic or child abuse and it's a problem you have regardless of wether prostitution is legal or illegal. If it's legal the prostitute speaking up at the very least doesn't risk legal consequences for being a prostitute. And the model of "buying sex is illegal but offering is not" is a bullshit concept. Imagine it being legal to offer any other servic but it's illegal to buy said service.
@Monokuma- I like that attitude, and it was the original concept of "American freedom" but we've long lost the strength to simply let others live as they wish to. Stay strong!

Censorship isn't lax here… it officially doesn't exist (that doesn't mean that stuff you may *call* censorship doesn't happen). Article 5 of our Constitution: "There shall be no censorship." (official wording)
Jürgen Erhard I don’t say this as an insult or in confrontation, but as an American that just sounds weird that your constitution is taken so literal that vulgar words can’t be censored. Because just because we bleep it, we still know from context what’s being said.
@@MateoJFR It isn't. The censorship rule in the constitution doesn't mean individual words, or songs can't be omitted for being obscene, that happens occasionally (see my other post). The article in the constitution means that the government must not tell the media what to publish or not to publish. You can argue if they always adhere to this vow, I personally think they don't.
@@MateoJFR Everyone knows exactly that "beep" actually means "fuck". So why beep it in the first place? Kelly even knew the exact amount of fucks in that song (22). So you know a song with 22 fucks but are shocked when you actually hear 'em? That doesn't make any sense at all.
@@MateoJFR then why do you beep it in the first place? If everyone knows anyway what it stands for... also what's so bad about slur words? Everybody uses them and educating children isn't accomplished by hiding stuff from children and creating an artificial safety bubble, but by explaining to them what they mean, what the consequences of using them are and in what situations it might be acceptable to use them. We rather deal with a subject and create rules for it, than pretending like it doesn't exist and letting it grow wild in the shadows. It's a stereotype here about anglophone people, that every second word they utter is a slur (an actual one in case of brits, a weird rhyme on a slur in case of us-americans). I think it's the same as with drinking alcohol, if you start slowly and learn the limit and restrictions at a relatively young age, then it turns out less problematic than if you just deny its existence until suddenly at 21 you are thrown into the cold water without having learned how to swim first. E.g. as a child i would always repeat swears i picked up to my mother and ask her what they mean and she would just calmly explain them to me and tell me their gravity, so at age 5 i already had a vague idea of what a "whore" is and that it's one of the worst ones to call a woman. Hence i didn't need to try it out to get feedback via a reaction and knew that it was too hurtful to actually call someone that.
@@xaverlustig3581 You also cannot forget the BPjM. If a medium is considered to be "Jugendgefährdend" by them, it will not be banned but put on a list, you are still allowed to own it and even sell it, but any kind of advertise is forbidden. There are people who consider this to be a form of censorship.
#5 Is probably a linguistic issue. Swear words in a foreign language just don't seem as offensive as in your mother tongue, and part of the audience don't understand them at all. There has been censorship of songs on German radio for political or rudeness reasons. Especially Bayerischer Rundfunk (the public broadcaster of Bavaria) is notorious for this, they've censored several songs over the years - mostly German ones where the audience actually understands what's being said. The same station also has switched its network of transmitters off of the national channel ARD during a satirical programme about Bavarian politics, and on another occasion during a gay movie. That was decades ago, but it did happen. Example: A chart-topping song of 1985 announced, but not played on Bavarian radio: ruclips.net/video/gRN-uxTZ1O4/видео.html
Yeah, BR sucks that way. They already do play the censored version of many English songs. I'm not sure though if that's just the only version they are provided with by the publishing company or they genuinely want to censor explicit lyrics.
I'd argue that censorship in Germany has changed a *lot* over the last couple of years. Can't speak for Bavaria, since I don't live there, but I think this becomes especially obvious when looking at how videogame-ratings have changed recently. Barely any games are landing on the index nowadays, while only half a decade back, there was a very good chance that an M-rated game would be banned in the German market. Hell, the very first Castle Wolfenstein game, you know, the one with only black and yellow colors, was banned for being "too realistic" and a "killing-simulator". Even now tho, Bavaria definitely is more conservative than most of the rest of Germany, and I could see them switching off gay movies for sure.
@@Depriety I should mention it was the first ever gay movie on (then West) German television, and it happened in 1973. And the movie isn't very good. That wasn't BR's reason for opting out though. :)
2) You just went to restaurants with peculiar guests. 3) You have a peculiar group of friends. My friends would ask you for your number and would just look if you used e.g. Threema. 4) Paying at the pump exists, especially for remote stations. Your guess is right: forcing people to pay inside increases revenue. Funny video. Stay some more years, you'll find even weirder things ;)
You drink at age 16 in Germany and in Bavaria, where the Oktoberfest takes place, beer is taxed as basic nutrition, not as alcohol. Being introduced so early to it, makes people a bit more civilized, except for the Ballermann.
Also in a small Restaurant when Parents are there you can drink Beer with 14 years. That came from the Time when Beer (back then with about 1-3% alc) was better than that dirty water for your health.
Don't know about Germany, but in Austria I have never witnessed a smoke break like you described it. :O Also, I'm very proud of our German neighbours to apparently have realized too that iphones are just overpriced junk with restrictive operating systems. *cough*
Gas in Germany is actually pretty overpriced. About any other country in the same region (Austria, Netherlands, Belgium, etc) all of them have significantly lower gas prices than Germany has. The reson why paying inside the store is required in germany is because not every person owns credit cards or EC cards to pay without actual cash. *In germany having an EC card is common, but not obligatory, so depending on your bank and/or your account limitations you will not have a card to pay electronically!* Hence there is a "law" for gas station owners to have at least one cashier for each station to take in cash. Also I believe Berlin is the city where presumably the most people are still smoking. It is falling widly out of fashion in most of German cities I know (NRW)
Prices are lower due to different taxes. Actually german gas stations have the lowest revenue in selling gas across europe. Petit Bistro, the cafeteria of Aral gas stations (belongs to BP) are ranked at number 10 among german system caterers. They aggressively offer you take away food if you pay your gas.
@@henningth.3704 Revenue yes, but prices the consumer needs to pay are still pretty high. E.g. Austria has 20% taxes opposed to Germany 19%, despite that gas still is cheaper in Austria (up to 20ct/l depending on which fuel). That is for the same gas stations in both countries!
@Intuition They surely prefer cash or the national Giro Card, but nearly every supermarket and many other stores and restaurants in Germany accept Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and V-Pay.
@Intuition It's not a question about knowing the better way, but about economy. Credit card ownership has been virtually zero in Germany. You pay cash. If you don't pay cash, you pay by debit card. To accept credit cards, you need contracts with all those credit card providers. And they actually charge you for those contracts, so you only want them if you have enough payments with those cards. Which you don't, unless you are in a tourist region. Like 15 years ago or so, many places would only let you pay with a debit card above a certain amount, like 10 or 15 bucks. Things have changed in the last couple of years though. You can now pay almost everywhere with debit cards and even quite some supermarket chains like Edeka will let you pay with Visa and Mastercard. You also can pay almost everywhere if your credit or debit card supports Maestro (look for the symbol).
1. lol Europe equals luxary? You know Europe has like 30 different countries, right? 2. Never seen a smoke break like that, not whole groups at least. 3. The prize is not that important, most people get their phone "for free" included in a contract, they just pay it then monthly. But its right though that we mostly dont care about luxary items. 4. Yup we're not too futuristic when it comes to EC or credit cards etc (credit cards e.g. are harder to get here!), but on the other side moving your body a few steps more can be healthy, you dont wanna end up like the people in Wall-E xD 5. There isnt really a rule to that. I've heard censored versions as well as original versions. The only difference in our language might be that "fuck" has different meanings in english while "fuck" in german only has the sexual meaning, any time we use it otherwise its just kinda imported from english - what we call anglicism. 6. Mmh you sure Irish Pub was the actual name? Cuz Irish Pub usually refers to the type of pub, meaning it has this british feeling to it. Cant really imagine Irish Pub was the real name. 7. Well if I had to choose to legalize either prostitution or private weapon ownership (if I literally had to choose!) I would be 100% against the guns. It's funny how America was ultimately built as the new Europe centuries ago but today its mindset is way more stuck in the past. This whole weapon, military pathos, patriot, god bless America and what not thing keeps me shaking my head sometimes. US are the least modern of all modern countries in the world when it comes to ideoligies, cultural thinking and global sympathizing. Interesting though how we react when we see new things that are normal to others xD

In some as aspects thats maybe true. Look how we handle the Corona Crisis so far. Definitly better than the US. But surely there are other things where the US is "superior" or has an advantage.
8:11 Here in Brazil we don't even leave the car to pay (yes, even with cash). We pay to the gas station employee (which also pumps) from the car window.
Dependent on when you buy, apple products are usually double or triple the price than the equivalent Android, Windows or linux device. There are 3 main reasons why people buy apple. 1. They know nothing about technology. 2. They own other apple devices and need the compatibility. 3. Because they think its trendy. Edit: 4. In order to have airpods in so they cant hear us.
Funny thing about those gas stations in the US: even with our credit cards we were most times forced to go into the gas station to pay for the gas. The reason for that is that your pump readers often ask for a postal code - an US (!) postal code - and won't accept our german postal code (big surprise ^^). So we could not pay at the pump and had to do it the 'german way'. :-D Btw. I've never seen a whole group of people leave their table for a smoke in germany. But I never was one of the cool kids and never did smoke so maybe I've got a blind side for that kind of strange behaviour. :-D
Matthias Kalupner Yes, I had same experience. I was so happy to find a 7eleven with gas station, finally. None of the gas stations allowed me to fuel up. Actually, in my mind I saw myself already sitting in front of a gas station with an empty car 🙈
I'm a German smoker and can confirm that those breaks are not a thing the way she described it. In my experience it's rare that everyone in a group smokes and interrupting a meal for smoking only to return to a now-cold meal when you just killed your appetite... that's just madness.

I have never seen someone leaving for a smoke during the dinner either. Afterwards yes or maybe before, when the dinner takes a lot of time to come.

Berlin hasnt the highest rents, Hamburg and Munich are way more expensive
3vr1m try cities in the Stuttgart area and Darmstadt
@@thisisgoddi4517 youre srsly comparing darmstadt with munich ?
@@thisisgoddi4517 alright then.
thisisgoddi I agree Darmstadt is one of the more expensive cities (according to the internet, the average rent is 11,77€/square meter), but I guess it also always depends on where you want to live in the city (which area).
LOL
A country, where a mixed sauna is automatically considered as a brothel or a swinger club? Where a commercial for a bra is not shown on TV, but is the biggest producer of porn movies world wide?
Where you can be arrested if you change your wet swim trunks under a wrapped around towel on a public beach? Regarding sex, the US is rely screwed up form a European point of view.
This deserves much more likes
2. We do this all the time between courses^^

You can't compare Berlin with other capitols. Because of the german history it's much cheaper than elsewhere. Compare Munich instead.

Ist es nicht sogar in Ost-Berlin billiger als im Westen wegen der DDR? So kommt es mir immer vor und ja, Berlin kann man für Mietpreise vergleichen schlecht nehmen
My thoghts about thse:
Have a look at this classic commercial form the Netherlands: ruclips.net/video/7nQ9lmriWOc/видео.html

About the first. Topic. Yes living cost are cheaper in Germany, but compare it to our taxes.
I use Android because it integrates better with all my other devices. I'm running Linux and Windows computers and I don't want to use iTunes or any other software by Apple just to connect my devices. I'll always opt for the open platform if I get to chose and don't lose any vital feature by doing so. To me Apple seems to have great stuff - but I don't want to exclusively marry into that brand just for the sake of compatibility.

Iphones are just old-tech compared to android ... and the walled garden mentality of apple is kind of not appreciated (just my opinion)
the wall-in provides a sane level of app quality and security. whereas Google has completely lost control of that. as a consequence Google has to do a restart of Android.
First Android is not a phone brand so stop acting like it is. Android is just an OS and iOS was always better. Faster, more polished and secure.

The only kind of prostitution being illegal was male to male, and that was legalised at the same time gay sex became legal in 1969.

smoking isnt really socially accepted in germany either

and point 3 is completely false
firstly whatsapp is avalible on all phones
secondly the reason everyone uses it is that it replaced the text message because using whatsapp is faster easier and free
Well not really free… YOU pay with all your personal data and literally let Facebook read and store EVERYTHING you send and receive (and that price is toooo high). Also… technically the message service is not free either. You pay for the data service instead of the price for every single message like with SMS or MMS.
"dickhead"

Well, I'm a german who moved to the US and paying right at the gas pump for your gas was sort of a reverse culture shock for me XD
Ok, more like it was part of the culture shock.

Us Germans prefer Android because we are a practical people.

Yes, that's why.
There are also a few self-serving gas-stations. Where you can pay directly at the pump.

About the Health and additcion issues, i don't know the statistics for this but that might be correct. But is that problem related to the act of prostitution?
@@KingQwertzlbrmpf Many of these prostituts are victims of human trafficking and they de facto income is way below the minimal.
Example: A chart-topping song of 1985 announced, but not played on Bavarian radio:
ruclips.net/video/gRN-uxTZ1O4/видео.html
Volltreffer!
Yeah, BR sucks that way. They already do play the censored version of many English songs. I'm not sure though if that's just the only version they are provided with by the publishing company or they genuinely want to censor explicit lyrics.
Switchingoff gay movies is a brave sort of cultural respect for non-gays

And the rent lmao... The rent in Austria... Ahahha... *cries in German*
*In germany having an EC card is common, but not obligatory, so depending on your bank and/or your account limitations you will not have a card to pay electronically!*
Hence there is a "law" for gas station owners to have at least one cashier for each station to take in cash.
@Intuition yes, germans are conservative and Businesses offen avoid the extra costs... Be prepared and always have cash with you🤔
@Intuition They surely prefer cash or the national Giro Card, but nearly every supermarket and many other stores and restaurants in Germany accept Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and V-Pay.
