Example of One-sided Journalism 1. Why are you interviewing someone living in Athens, Greece, instead of someone living in Cyprus or a Cypriot? 2. Why are you not explaining the primary purpose of Turkey's Peace Operation in Cyprus? 3. Is your preference to hear the Cypriot perspective from a Greek person due to your affinity with or fear of Greece? 4. Why are you not addressing the political structure of Cyprus or the issues caused by the coup in 1974? 5. Why are you not discussing the Annan Plan and the last negotiations in 2017? 6. Even though you are a public institution affiliated with Germany and funded by German taxpayers, do you use German discipline and ethics in your videos solely for your own interests? DW > ethical values and self-interested discourses
I agree with posing those questions. This report especially on the mark of the 50 years should have been done more thoroughly and with much greater respect to the events. It does not represent any side, except superficially the position of the Cypriot and Greek leader, and it is paired with correspondence from a person who clearly possesses minimum knowledge about the issue. On the other hand, there has been a mention of the coup by Greece, which of course is not nearly enough to grasp the context of the situation, but the perspective is rightfully primarily from the side of the victim, which is the Republic of Cyprus side. I believe that a more extensive dive in the issue would be more representative, including the realities on the ground right now, both from the GreekCypriot and the TurkishCypriot perspective.

This is a great example of one-sided journalism. The issue is a conflict; therefore, both sides should be given the opportunity to deliver their messages. This is not about Erdogan or his policies; using his negative image to convey the issues about the topic is not helpful at all. I cannot see any coverage of the Annan Plan, referendum, or crimes against Turks before and during the coup in Cyprus. As a taxpayer I am just diasappointed.
Annan plan was a plan that was about to give disproportionate priviledges to Turk Cypriots. It would be a suicide for Greeks to support it. Its ridiculous hhow Turks present it like "it was a time when Greece prooved that reunification was not what they wanted". Face reality. Annan plan was totally in favor of Turks. Its excpectable for Greeks to say no.
Intercommunal violence means that both Turkish and Greeks were killed in them. The equivalent of Turkey occupying 36% of the island because the 19% of the population was "in danger" is equally fair as Greece saying that they would claim half of Turkey to save Greeks from Turks that are massacring them inside the Ottoman Empire (before 1918). And actually, the Greeks being killed were much more in the 2nd case. And this is an argument that Greece used to support the Conquest on Anatolia (That Turks consider as an absolutely agreesive strategy). Not to mention that Greeks were living on these lands (both Cyprus and Anatolia) wasy before Turks come, but thats an other topic.
Hypocrisy at its extreme. Armenians in Karabakh do not have the right to a state. The Turks in Cyprus should get a state Also you can ask old Armenians in autonomous karabakh what they suffered from azeris before 1992.

Let's not forget that in 2004, the Greeks said no to the reunification of the island and were rewarded with EU membership. The Turks said yes, they are not members of the EU.
Because it was a bad plan made by the British amd turks and it was a death sentence to Cyprus. Do you think Cypriots would had rejected it if it was a good plan? Also, we will do what we want, its our country and we will vote for whatever works for our nation. You know how democracy works rights?
@@sefagundogan1595 Anan Plan was a resurrection of Apartheid in the Republic of Cyprus. @@georgioso.4203 pretty fair, through lenses of Greek community of the island of course. Another question then. Is there any critic in Greek community about the fact that an attempt to reunificate Cyprus with Greece in 1974 led to 'illegal occupation'. So thanks to today's status quo, no one is dying and Greek side of the island is in EU. As of today, Turkey has nothing to lose. No state has recognized the state in the North, no one will I guess. After 50 years, it would be very hard for both Greek- and Turk- Cypriots to unite in one-state. @@universalspaceexpeditioner8259 Than here more information for you and for everyone.I am writing for those who read here; The first secret negotiations for Eoka, a terrorist organization established to destroy the Turkish people in Cyprus and bind the island to Greece, were held in Athens on July 2, 1952, under the chairmanship of Makarios. Following these meetings, a "revolutionary council" was established on March 7, 1953, and the founders of this council took the following secret oath for enosis: "I swear before God to keep what I know and will know about the Enosis case a secret, even under torture and at the cost of my life. I will obey all orders given to me without question." In the first months of 1954, secret arms shipments to Cyprus began with the knowledge of the Greek government, and the terrorist named Grivas secretly landed on the island on 9 November 1954. Eoka upon the directive of Greek Foreign Minister Stefanoplus; It officially went into action by detonating its first bombs on April 1, 1951. The purpose of eoka; His aim was first to expel the British from the island, and then to destroy the Turkish people with a total destruction move and to connect the island to Greece. However, without waiting for the British to leave the island, attacks against the Turks began on June 21, 1955. Grivas, who writes in his memoirs that he decided to train and arm the youth organization called Peon, founded by Makarios on 22 November 1954, thus emphasizes that Makarios was behind Eoka. It is known that Makarios resolved the issue with Greek officials during his various visits to Athens. In his letter dated June 4, 1959, Grivas states that Makarios invited him to Cyprus to manage Eoka, and explains that the church provided financial aid to purchase weapons for the terrorist organization. Makarios, who summoned Grivas on March 27, 1955, personally gave the order to take action. Learning that Makarios was the political leader of Eoka, the British arrested him on March 9, 1956 and exiled him to the Seychelles. Eoka militants, who massacred hundreds of Turks, 100 British and hundreds of Greeks during their action, destroyed 30 Turkish villages and caused the Turks living there to migrate. Eoka started attacking again in 1963 and destroyed 103 Turkish villages and killed more than 500 Turks; It forced tens of thousands of Turks to migrate. Eoka, who appeared under the name Eoka-B during the Sampson coup on July 15, 1974, this time turned his weapons against his own people and massacred 2,000 Greeks. That's why the Republic of Türkiye named the operation it carried out on the island as "Cyprus Peace Operation". Türkiye saved not only the Turkish Cypriots, but also the innocent peaceful Greeks!

Let's make one thing clear. Cyprus was not invaded for the sake of land grabbing. Cyprus was an artificially created country. The treaty that created Cyprus designated signatory countries TÜRKİYE, UK, and Greece as guarantors of the country's independence. Within a year the Greeks violated the constitution that provided specific rights to the Turkish population and thus began the road to the goal of unification with Greece by cleansing the Turks. Türkiye used her right as a guarantor and intervened after the other guarantors refused. The Greeks never intended to recognize and honor the treaty and the constitution that created CYPRUS. After 50 years they still don't.
The majority in the island was Greek and voted for Cyprus to be Greek. Greece doesn't have a right to protect it's population in a island very close to hostile(in that time) Turkey?
Turkiye is a guarantor country in Cyprus. The Greeks committed genocide against the Turks and the Turks carried out a peace operation to protect their compatriots from massacre. The Turkish Republic of Cyprus is an independent state and this is a concrete fact that will never change until eternity. You can accept it or not. Facing the truth will save you from sadness :)

UN peace since 1960 has done nothing. If they did, we would not be talking about the island being divided in 1974. Where were they to stop Greece from sending soldiers to the Island. If all those were stopped, none of these would have taken place. They turned a Blind eye to torcher and killings of Turkish villages. Mass burials, I can go on and on. WHAT PEACE.
So we have one Greek lady unilaterally discussing the issue at hand. This is true journalism.. Turkey had all rights to invade the island. After all the committed atrocities they can be glad that they have not taken the whole island or even parts of Greece
Türkiye did its best in 2004 to hold a referendum to unite the island. The Greek Cypriots refused to unite, the Turkish Cypriots overwhelmingly voted for a reunion. Even though I may understand the sentiments which led the Greek Cypriots to refuse the Annan Plan, this was a missed historic opportunity. Such opportunities are rare. Identity politics has consistently proven to stagnate progress. What we need in conflicts is realpolitik and I do believe that the Turkish government back in 2004 was involved with that. In light of the above, I believe it is hypocritical to blame Türkiye about its continued presence on the island. Many people forget (or the media deliberately does not inform the public) about the massacres Turkish Cypriots were subjected to before Türkiye's military intervention on the island. I have heard first-hand stories from my Turkish Cypriot family and friends about the atrocities they had to endure after the Brits put Turks and Greeks against each other. We can discuss Türkiye's mistakes in the course of its presence on the island, but this one-sided, anti Turkish discourse is sickening. Get off your high horses! On another note, what is UK still doing on Cyprus? Send the British occupiers away first. Then you can complain about Türkiye's presence. I hear you thinking: one is a "legal" occupation, the other is not. Then challenge that concept of legality. With the law in hand humans suffered and continue to suffer injustice. I am for a united Cyprus. But with Türkiye not being a member state of the EU (and I have lost all faith in this), it is highly unlikely that Cypriots will unite. The facts on the ground will not change without a good compromise. There's always a price to pay and something to gain. Realpolitik will lead the way to a good solution. Turkish and Greeks have fought since a thousand years with the fall of Constantinople and so on. What happened on Cyprus is not just about Greeks and Turkish and Cypriot, I see no one is mentioning the divisive influence of the British who were stoking behind the scenes conflict so they can keep the locals fighting each other while they still occupy the island with scattered opposition. Even though I am Greek my belief is that British helped the Greeks in the past because they wanted to put a dent in the Ottoman empire for many reasons such Iragi oil and more. The British stoked tensions that lead to violence and hate from both sides and finally war. I wouldn't be able to identify as a Greek person if my ancestors didn't fight a bloody war of independence. The answer to the Cyprus division depends very much on the perspective of whom you ask. A Greek Cypriot who was living in a majority Greek Cypriot state of course does not like it when Turkey invades to create an independent state for Turkish Cypriots, I guess this is what happens when we could not reconcile living together. Finally, I hear from older people there used to be constant fighting in the past before the split. Now there's none.

Same can be said of the Greek approach. In fact it is historically manifested (Enosis, coup d'etat, contiguous defensive space" etc) and current comments on Cyprus as a "bulwark of Hellenism" in East Med, attempts to unify EEZs (with no precedent - quite the contrary - in judicial rulings), as well as attempts to block/fence off Turkey and allying with a proper dictatorship, an apartheid state and the most anti-democratic forces int the Arab world, as well as with a bloody warlord, demonstrate the goal clearly.

@@georgeskndrs8241 Why did you reject the Annan Plan in 2004? Back then Erdogan was the good guy for you people and he was even willing to give away some part of land.
The legitimate reason for the Turkish Peace Operation in Cyprus was the increasing oppression and malicious actions against the Turkish community living there. In 1974, the coup carried out by the Greek National Guard in Cyprus, supported by Greece, endangered the lives of the Turkish community on the island and created the risk of massacre. Turkey, based on the 1960 Guarantee Agreements, acted on July 20, 1974, to ensure the security of the Turkish Cypriots and to restore constitutional order.

Don't fool yourself. Let me tell you the real deal. In 1960, the Turkish-Greek joint Republic of Cyprus was established. According to the agreement, a Greek named Makarios was elected as president. His deputy was chosen as Turk. Five years later, the president would be Turkish and his vice president would be Greek. But armed Greek gangs called Eoka raided Turkish villages, killed hundreds of civilians, and seized the government by making a coup against President Makarios. With the Akritas plan they announced, they declared that the Turks would be expelled from the island and connect Cyprus to Greece. Thereupon, Türkiye, which is the guarantor state under the terms of the agreement, carried out a military operation on the island. In this way, both sides have been living in peace for 50 years.

Also you can ask the old Turkish people living in the island, what they have witnessed before Turkish operation?
Intercommunal violence means that both Turkish and Greeks were killed in them. The equivalent of Turkey occupying 36% of the island because the 19% of the population was "in danger" is equally fair as Greece saying that they would claim half of Turkey to save Greeks from Turks that are massacring them inside the Ottoman Empire (before 1918). And actually, the Greeks being killed were much more in the 2nd case. And this is an argument that Greece used to support the Conquest on Anatolia (That Turks consider as an absolutely agreesive strategy). The first secret negotiations for Eoka, a terrorist organization established to destroy the Turkish people in Cyprus and bind the island to Greece, were held in Athens on July 2, 1952, under the chairmanship of Makarios.
Following these meetings, a "revolutionary council" was established on March 7, 1953, and the founders of this council took the following secret oath for enosis:
"I swear before God to keep what I know and will know about the Enosis case a secret, even under torture and at the cost of my life. I will obey all orders given to me without question."
In the first months of 1954, secret arms shipments to Cyprus began with the knowledge of the Greek government, and the terrorist named Grivas secretly landed on the island on 9 November 1954.

I am Greek and Cypriot. There was EOKA A who fought for independence from the British colonial occupation of the island. EOKA B wanted to unite Cyprus with Greece. 👏👏👏 Exactly. They were fighting and killing each other too- those supporting EOKA B and those against ENOSIS. They blamed Turks for their deaths too. They're still not on the same page today, some are racists who call us 'Mongols' while others say we are Turkified Greek Cypriots. Make up your minds first among yourselves. If Turkey didn't intervene there would be no Cypriot Turks left. Unlike Palestinians, Cypriot Turks were lucky to have Ecevit to come to the rescue. The West would sit by and watch the slaughter like they are doing now with Palestinians for 8 months. There was intercommunal fighting in 1963, 1967 and 1974 when Turkey came and there has been peace ever since. Why can't we live side by side like the Dominican Republic and Haiti? What's the big deal if there is lasting peace?
@@georgeskndrs8241 Why did you reject the Annan Plan in 2004? Back then Erdogan was the good guy for you people and he was even willing to give away some part of land.
Greece refused the unification 2004...please be silent
Why should they have accepted a plan which allowed the Turkish invading forces to stay ?

No Cyprus choose to be fully independent NATION STATE,,,What is EU about?,,,when can we see Cyprus restored???
When they will finally realize that Turkey is an enemy of the West!
we have to hear both sides not only one cause it is what it is now
The legitimate reason for the Turkish Peace Operation in Cyprus was the increasing oppression and malicious actions against the Turkish community living there.

@@Giannis-zm5no I know you didnt google it but for other people Google "Maratha, Santalaris and Aloda massacre" that is just one example in many.
error number one. Coup was by Greece dictators at the time not Cypriot National Guard
error number two : it's Cypriot National Guard not Greek National Guard there was no such thing
error number three: The Junta collapsed because of the coup.
The only thing you got right was to restore the constitution so why you still there it was restored.
Same Kremlin logic

why only talking with a greek side of represantive? why not a turkish one aswell?
Eoka was genociding turkish cypriots so Turkiye had to intervene what did they expect?
And turkey 🦃 didn't have any right to commit ethnic cleansing, create a pseudo state and bring Turkish settlers to change the demographics.
