I just finished that this weekend. I thought his explanation of Kaijus as ecosystems was clever as it extrapolates from our internal microbiota (without which we’d not grow properly) and presents it at a large scale.
I enjoyed the book. Quick easy read. Left me with a smile.
I think I may have read Wild Side long ago. It stuck in my head for decades so I wanted to reread it but didn’t know the title or author. I recall the portal in the alternate earth first opened inside a giant cedar tree. And a passenger pigeon they brought back to sell to raise funds also had extinct lice on it. I’ll go find the book and reread (or read) it.
Incidentally, I think Jamie’s gender is never specified. Could be him, her, or them. Maybe it is noted somewhere though and I missed it.

That’s actually an interesting detail, easy to miss. You’re right that there doesn’t seem to be an explicit declaration about Jamie’s gender, meaning, with the character’s androgynous name, the reader is free to envision the character as male, female, enby, or otherwise nonconforming. (Looks like I have some edits to make, at least in the written version of this review.)

I really liked the addition of a bonus recommendation, If you liked this you might like this. As a librarian I'm always happy to see older books get attention. But this feature would really allow you to showcase your your expertise, the knowledge you have accumulated over decades of reading SFF. I do hope we see more bonus recommendations in the future!

Sometimes you really do just need something predictable and fun! I felt the same about Project Hail Mary.

I really liked that you don’t see much of what’s coming in PHM though! But your point is taken. We’re all in need of some non-challenging entertainment in these times.

Project Hail Mary was such a disappointment.

Thanks for the review! I've been slightly interested in this book from the Kaiju angle, and it sounds like it could be a fun and quick read.

I'm in the middle of this on audiobook... which is narrated by Wil Wheaton who I believes narrates all of Scalzi's books. It is very much a sci-fi comedy in the vein of his earlier "Redshirts". It does have good ideas on how the Kaiju live and evolve. Not sure if it's plausible scientifically but it sounds cool. Besides Wildside, you have Dennis E. Taylor's Outland and even Pratchett and Baxter's Long Earth series which are also similar themed (though definitely not as light as Scalzi).

Also I'm thinking Michael Swanwick's Bones of the Earth would be another one.

Yeah, what’s up with the twenties already? And we’re only two years in!!
Finding it really difficult to even start reading this year so I’m going to try this i think. Scalzi is always reliable for a nice easy escape from reality.

I think Scalzi nailed it for me with this one. He is the master of feel good sci-fi and I always go for him when I need that. Kaiju made me smile the whole way, but I do agree that this was nothing surprising. My favorite thing was the microbiota - “parasites” gimmick. It was such good fun. I for some reason pictured Jamie as female, but idk why I had thought that haha. Oops
Again this was a great review! Thank you again!

Well, I erred in not mentioning that Jamie’s gender actually is never specified, which Scalzi did on purpose so that we’d have the freedom to visualize the character however we please.

    • @aneweliseonlife
      @aneweliseonlife 2 года назад

@@SFF180 I don’t think you erred! I assumed a gender as well without even noticing haha. Rather clever actually

My only 'nit' to pick with this book is that he used 'parasites' when 'symbionts' would have been more accurate.

I have wondering when we would get an explicitly post Covid story. I know Paul Tremblay released Survivor Song June or July of 2020 but it was an unfortunately timed coincidence to be a zombie plague novel predicting things like runs on the supermarket but it was done being edited late 2019. I am looking forward to this one. It sounds like a fun read.

I really like John Scalzi and this seems like another story right in his sweet spot…I agree with you 100% that this author is the best recommendation for getting those first started in the genre…
though as those people move on in their SciFi reading experience they will find his style is going to be noticeably different from most others in SciFi…But Scalzi is definitely a good jumping off point for those getting into the genre…I also liked the fact you added if you liked this book try this book dimension to your reviews and I hope that it’s something you will employ more in the future…
I think your viewers and subscribers will enjoy it and take to it quickly…Good Luck and keep up the good works 👍🏻

I loved this, especially the audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton. But one thing… why do you call Jamie “he”? Like Locked In, the gender is never even *once* specified.

Right, that was an error in the original script. It’s corrected in the written version of the review.
