People are writing here that they should just let her go. But I see she is not on a respirator. When someone stops breathing and their heart then begins to stop, we perform CPR. Then the part of the brain that regulates breathing and our heart will start again in most cases. But you do not know till later just how much brain damage has gone on with the rest of the brain. The involuntary functions like breathing, digesting food, heart and lungs all run under that part of the brain. The other voluntary functions like moving your hands, arms, legs are all regulated moves. So she can still be alive because the involuntary part of the brain recovered, but the voluntary part of the brain did not. So the people end up breathing, digesting food (from a feeding tube in this case) etc, but other than that, they are zoned out. No treatment will recover the dead part of the brain. So all they can give is supportive care to keep her comfortable. The optional part is the toughest ~ that being where you want them to live out the rest of their life. Home is best if all supports can be done at home, and in her case that can be done. After one year roughly what a person gets to level wise is as far as they will go ~ goes for other brain injuries ~ strokes, brain injures and so on. Some people can learn to make other parts of the brain do the job the injured part can not. But that is Dutch auction as they say ~ no standard treatment for recovery, so no understanding how far each individual person can achieve. I personally as a parent would learn how to do as much as possible to take control of her care and keep it at home. The parents took their daughter out of an institution after a brain injury due to being hit by a car (as a child). They took control and moved as far forward as they could. There is no recovery. This little girl will never improve, she will never play with dolls, run, go to school, go on a date, learn to drive............ I was a nurse for over 20 years and people on PVS do not improve. It is a horrible and hellish existence. How much money do we spend to prolong this child's suffering when there are other ill children who can improve and have a life?
